Thermalization of open quantum systems with pseudomodes

Pseudomode approaches allow for an exact and unapproximated description of a quantum system interacting arbitrarily strongly with a bath. In general, a system coupled to pseudomodes will not thermalize to the system's Gibbs state: This is to be expected when the system-bath coupling is non-perturbative, but conflicts with common thermodynamic intuition when the system-bath coupling is asymptotically weak. We explore under which circumstances pseudomode models satisfy detailed balance (and subsequently thermalize to the system Gibbs state) and how specific choices of parameters can force "weak" detailed balance that is restricted to a limited frequency range. A combination of Hermitian and non-Hermitian pseudomodes that yields a flat effective-temperature profile is also considered. The results and criteria established here are relevant for the construction of pseudomode models in contexts where thermodynamic consistency is required.

paces: Parallelized Application of Co-Evolving Subspaces, a method for computing quantum dynamics on GPUs

An efficient method of solving the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation for pure states is described: At each timestep, a restricted subspace of the total Hilbert space is systematically and naturally constructed via the image of repeated applications of the Hamiltonian operator, and the time evolution is computed exactly within said subspace. The subspace is dynamically recomputed such that it co-evolves with the state vector. The method is built from the ground up as a parallel algorithm for graphics processing units and suited to Hamiltonians that are sparse in a given basis. We benchmark the method by comparing its results for a 1D Holstein model to previously published multiset-MPS results, and then apply the method to compute optical spectra and non-equilibrium dynamics of one-, two- and three-dimensional model chromophore nanoaggregates.

Long-Range Non-Equilibrium Coherent Tunneling Induced by Fractional Vibronic Resonances

We study the influence of a linear energy bias on a non-equilibrium excitation on a chain of molecules coupled to local phonons (a tilted Holstein model) using both a random-walk rate kernel theory and a nonperturbative, massively parallelized adaptive-basis algorithm. We uncover structured and discrete vibronic resonance behavior fundamentally different from both linear response theory and homogeneous polaron dynamics. Remarkably, resonance between the phonon energy $\hbarω$ and the bias $δ_ε$ occurs not only at integer but also fractional ratios $δ_ε/(\hbarω) = \frac{m}{n}$, which effect long-range $n$-bond $m$-phonon tunneling. These observations are also reproduced in a model calculation of a recently demonstrated Cy3 system. Potential applications range from molecular electronics to optical lattices and artificial light harvesting via vibronic engineering of coherent quantum transport.

Interface-Induced Conservation of Momentum Leads to Chiral-Induced Spin Selectivity

We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of electron transmission from a straight waveguide to a helix with spin-orbit coupling. Transmission is found to be spin-selective and can lead to large spin polarizations of the itinerant electrons. The degree of spin selectivity depends on the width of the interface region, and no polarization is found for single-point couplings. We show that this is due to momentum conservation conditions arising from extended interfaces. We therefore identify interface structure and conservation of momentum as crucial ingredients for chiral-induced spin selectivity, and confirm that this mechanism is robust against static disorder.
