Higgs Physics at LEP2

In this report we review the prospects for Higgs physics at LEP2. The theoretical aspects and the phenomenology of Higgs particles are discussed within the Standard Model (SM) and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The experimental search techniques are described and the discovery limits for Higgs bosons in the LEP2 energy range are summarized. In addition, opportunities of detecting Higgs particles in non-minimal extensions of the SM and the MSSM are investigated.

Four fermion production in e+ e- annihilation

Four fermion processes at e+ e- colliders in a range of energy from 100 GeV to 1 TeV are discussed and examples of results obtained with an event generator presented. We also investigate the effects of the inclusion of initial state QED corrections and QCD contributions.

Initial-state QED corrections to four-fermion production in e+e- collisions at LEP200 and beyond

The implementation of QED initial-state radiative corrections in the process of four-fermion production at LEP200 and higher-energy e+e- colliders is discussed. Because of the presence of charged-current processes, this is a nontrivial problem, and we compare our approach with other existing treatments. We describe the Monte Carlo algorithm used for the generation of 4-fermion events with photon bremsstrahlung. Comparison between our event generator and semi-numerical calculations are presented, as well as predictions for W and Z pair related cross sections.

Weight optimization in multichannel Monte Carlo

We discuss the improvement in the accuracy of a Monte Carlo integration that can be obtained by optimization of the `a-priori weights' of the various channels. These channels may be either the strata in a stratified-sampling approach, or the several `approximate' distributions such as are used in event generators for particle phenomenology. The optimization algorithm does not require any initialization, and each Monte Carlo integration point can be used in the evaluation of the integral. We describe our experience with this method in a realistic problem, where an effective increase in program speed by almost an order of magnitude is observed.

All electroweak four fermion processes in electron-positron collisions

This paper studies the electroweak production of all possible four fermion states in e+ e- collisions. Since the methods employed to evaluate the complete matrix elements and phase space are very general, all four fermion final states in which the charged particles are detected can be considered. Also all kinds of experimental cuts can be imposed. With the help of the constructed event generator a large number of illustrative results is obtained, which show the relevance of backgrounds to a number of signals. For LEP 200 the W-pair signal and its background are discussed, for higher energies also Z-pair and single W and Z signals and backgrounds are presented.

BBBREM - Monte Carlo simulation of radiative Bhabha scattering in the very forward direction

A fast and simple Monte Carlo program is presented that simulates single Bremsstrahlung in Bhabha scattering, e+e- --> e+e-gamma, without constraints on scattering angles. This allows the study of this process at arbitrarily small, or even vanishing, scattering angles. Experimental cuts can be imposed on an event-by-event basis, allowing for detailed studies of the process as a limitation to beam lifetimes, or a luminosity-measuring device, in e+e- storage rings. As an application, we show that the easy introduction of a cutoff parameter, corresponding to the characteristic distance between particles in the bunches, gives a reduced cross section that is in good agreement with observation.

Nullification of multi-Higgs threshold amplitudes in the Standard Model

We show that nullification of all tree-order threshold amplitudes involving Higgs particles in the Standard Model occurs, provided that certain equations relating the masses of all existing elementary particles to the mass of the Higgs scalar are satisfied. The possible role of these relations in restoring the high-multiplicity unitarity and their phenomenological relevance are briefly discussed.

On amplitude zeros at threshold

The occurrence of zeros of 2 to n amplitudes at threshold in scalar theories is studied. We find a differential equation for the scalar potential, which incorporates all known cases where the 2 to n amplitudes at threshold vanish for all sufficiently large $n$, in all space-time dimensions, $d\ge 1$. This equation is related to the reflectionless potentials of Quantum Mechanics and to integrable theories in 1+1 dimensions. As an application, we find that the sine-Gordon potential and its hyperbolic version, the sinh-Gordon potential, also have amplitude zeros at threshold, ${\cal A}(2\to n)=0$, for $n\ge 4$ and $d\ge 2$, independently of the mass and the coupling constant.

Multiscalar production amplitudes beyond threshold

We present exact tree-order amplitudes for $H^* \to n~H$, for final states containing one or two particles with non-zero three-momentum, for various interaction potentials. We show that there are potentials leading to tree amplitudes that satisfy unitarity, not only at threshold but also in the above kinematical configurations and probably beyond. As a by-product, we also calculate $2\to n$ tree amplitudes at threshold and show that for the unbroken $ϕ^4$ theory they vanish for $n>4~$, for the Standard Model Higgs they vanish for $n\ge 3~$ and for a model potential, respecting tree-order unitarity, for $n$ even and $n>4~$. Finally, we calculate the imaginary part of the one-loop $1\to n$ amplitude in both symmetric and spontaneously broken $ϕ^4$ theory.
