Accessing Few-Layer CrI$_3$ Magnetoelasticity Through Bulk Single Crystals

The persistence of ferromagnetic long-range order in monolayers of the van der Waals semiconductor CrI$_3$ opens new routes for spintronic applications based on two-dimensional quantum magnets. In the fabrication of such devices, the constituent materials inevitably experience anisotropic strain, which modifies their intrinsic electronic properties. At the same time, strain can serve as a powerful tuning parameter, driving the material to desired regimes. While several theoretical studies have investigated the effect of biaxial in-plane strain on CrI$_3$ numerically, experiments are widely limited to the application of hydrostatic pressure. Here, we perform high-resolution magnetostriction experiments on bulk CrI$_3$ samples, and \textit{ab-initio}-based magnetoelastic calculations, to elucidate the role of uniaxial lattice strain on the magnetic properties. Our data show that magnetostriction in CrI$_3$ is unexpectedly sensitive to surface effects, which enables us to investigate the influence of in-plane and out-of-plane strain separately, in both the bulk ferromagnetic (BFM) phase emerging at $T_{\rm C}=61\,\mathrm{K}$ and the surface antiferromagnetic (SAFM) phase below $T^* \simeq 50\,\mathrm{K}$. In particular, we quantify the uniaxial strain dependence of the surface interlayer coupling $J^{\rm SAFM}_{\perp}$ and the surface spin-flip field $B^*$, which drastically exceed the strain effects in the BFM phase by a factor of $\sim 30$. The large magnetostrictive response allows us to study the magnetoelastic coupling in few-layer CrI$_3$ through experiments on bulk single crystals, without requiring exfoliation.

Nematicity in LaFeAsO single crystals studied by elastoresistance, high-resolution thermal expansion and shear-modulus measurements

Nematicity in LaFeAsO single crystals is studied by means of high-resolution thermal expansion, shear modulus, and elastoresistivity measurements. A softening of the shear modulus $C_{\rm 66}$ towards the structural phase transition at $T_{\rm S}$ is observed. In addition, a similar Curie-Weiss-like divergence of the nematic susceptibilities is found in the temperature dependence of both $\chi^{sh}$ and $\chi^{er}$, which are deduced from the shear modulus (sh) and the elastoresistivity (er) studies, respectively. These observations provide evidence for an electronic origin of nematicity in LaFeAsO. The characteristic energy of the coupling between the lattice and the electronic degrees of freedom is deduced to $\sim$30~K. The comparison to corresponding measurements on BaFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals reveals a very similar temperature dependence of the shear modulus but yields contrasting results for $\chi^{er}$ : In BaFe$_2$As$_2$, $\chi^{er}$ diverges similarly as the uncoupled nematicity deduced from the shear modulus data as it is expected from the underlying Landau theory. In contrast, the Weiss temperatures of $\chi^{er}$ and $\chi^{sh}$ are significantly different in LaFeAsO. This difference is at odds with the commonly anticipated theories of resistivity anisotropy and electronic nematicity in iron pnictides.

Low temperature Spin freezing and Diffuse Magnetic Correlations in Tb$_{2}$Zr$_{2-x}$Ti$_{x}$O$_{7}$ (x = 0, 0.5)

Structural disorder in the magnetically frustrated pyrochlore system leads to intriguing magnetic states. We present the thermodynamic behavior and short range magnetic correlations in Tb$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and Tb$_{2}$Zr$_{1.5}$Ti$_{0.5}$O$_{7}$ compounds. The parent compound Tb$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ has defect fluorite structure, which evolves toward the pyrochlore phase on Ti doping at Zr site. There is no long range magnetic order down to 0.4 K, and a magnetic field dependent spin freezing evolves below 1.25 K and 1.05 K for the parent and doped compounds, respectively. The ac susceptibility measurements indicate slow spin relaxation process below 20 K in these compounds. Inelastic neutron scattering reveals broad diffuse scattering, indicative of short range correlations at low temperature, owing to local structural distortions and persistent spin fluctuations. These results suggest a correlated, disorder influenced magnetic state in Tb$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$, Tb$_{2}$Zr$_{1.5}$Ti$_{0.5}$O$_{7}$ compounds.

Critical behavior and evidence of dimensional crossover in quasi-two-dimensional Li$_2$FeSiO$_4$

We report thermal expansion and heat capacity studies on Li$_2$FeSiO$_4$ single crystals which enable us to investigate the critical behavior in the magnetically quasi-two-dimensional (2D) material. Pronounced $\lambda$-shaped anomalies at the magnetic ordering temperature $T_{\rm N}$ imply significant magneto-elastic coupling. Our analysis of both the thermal expansion and the specific heat data implies the crossover from 2D Ising-like behavior for $|(T-T_{\rm N})/T_{\rm N}|>0.3$ to 3D Ising behavior \rev{below $\simeq 1.3\times T_{\rm N}$. The 2D-like behavior is further supported by density functional calculations which show minimal dispersion perpendicular to the crystallographic $ac$ planes of the layered structure, thereby indicating the 2D nature of magnetism at higher temperatures.} Our results extend the available model materials of quasi-2D magnetism to a high-spin $S=2$ system with tetrahedrally coordinated Fe$^{2+}$-ions, thereby illustrating how magnetic order evolves in a 2D Ising-like system with orbital degrees of freedom.

Towards Understanding Prolate 4$f$ Monomers: Numerical Predictions and Experimental Validation of Electronic Properties and Slow Relaxation in a Muffin-shaped Er$^\mathrm{III}$ Complex

We report the synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of the triply-capped, slightly distorted trigonal-prismatic complex [Er(PPTMP)$_2$(H$_2$O)][OTf]$_3$ (PPTMP = (4-(6-(1,10-phenanthrolin-2-yl)pyridin-2-yl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)methyl pivalate) ($\mathbf{1}$). Complex $\mathbf{1}$ is shown to exhibit field-induced slow relaxation of the magnetisation at $B = 0.1\,\mathrm{T}$ via two distinct relaxation paths. Using tunable high-frequency/high-field electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, we experimentally determine the effective $g$-factors and zero field splittings of the two energetically lowest Kramers doublets (KD). Our data reveal that the triply-capped, slightly distorted trigonal-prismatic ligand field favours an $m \simeq \pm 9/2$ magnetic ground state, while the main contribution to the first excited KD at $\Delta_{1 \rightarrow 2} = 780(5)\,\mathrm{GHz}$ is suggested to be $m \simeq \pm 5/2$. The ground state $g$-tensor has generally axial form but hosts significant transversal components, which we conclude to be the source of SMM-silent behaviour in zero field. Our findings are backed up by ab-initio spin-orbit configuration interaction calculations showing excellent agreement with the experimental data.

Competing Interactions and the Effects of Uniaxial Out-of-plane Perturbations in the Honeycomb Antiferromagnet Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$

Despite exhibiting magnetic long-range order below $T_\mathrm{N} = 26.7\,\mathrm{K}$, the honeycomb cobaltate Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ is predicted to enter a Kitaev spin liquid state when subjected to small external perturbations. While most of the reported literature investigates the effects of magnetic fields applied parallel to the honeycomb layers, we present high-resolution capacitance dilatometry studies for fields perpendicular to the Co-planes up to $15\,\mathrm{T}$. Gr\"uneisen analysis reveals the effect of uniaxial out-of-plane strain and shows that antiferromagnetic order in Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ is stabilized at a rate of $\partial T_\mathrm{N}/\partial p_\mathrm{c} = 0.28(5)\,\mathrm{K/GPa}$. Further, failure of the Gr\"uneisen scaling at low temperatures around $T_\mathrm{cr} \simeq 7.5\,\mathrm{K}$ demonstrates the presence of competing energy scales. In contrast to an only weak field dependence of the anomaly at $T_\mathrm{N}$, a broad hump at $T_\mathrm{cr}$ ($B=0\,\mathrm{T}$) evolves into a sharp peak at high fields applied $B \parallel c$. Our magnetostriction data show that a kink in the magnetisation at $B_\mathrm{C} \simeq 4.6\,\mathrm{T}$ is accompanied by an inflection point in the field-induced length changes, which is likely related to weak unequal spin canting. All observed phenomena leave their signatures in the magnetoelastic phase diagram as constructed by our experimental results.

The Relevance of Non-axiality and Low-lying Excited States for Slow Magnetic Relaxation in Pentagonal-bipyramidal Erbium(III) Complexes Probed by High-frequency EPR

High-frequency/high-field electron paramagnetic resonance studies on a series of seven-coordinate pentagonal-bipyramidal (PBP) erbium(III) complexes Er(DAPMBH/H$_2$DAPS)X (H$_2$DAPMBH = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis-4-methoxy benzoylhydrazone, H$_4$DAPS = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis-(salicylhydrazone)) demonstrate the effects of different apical ligands (X = (H$_2$O)Cl (1), (CH$_3$OH)N$_3$ (2), Cl$_2$ (3)) on the local magnetic anisotropy of the central Er(III) ions. In particular, we report direct experimental determination of the effective $g$-values and zero field splittings of the energetically low-lying Kramers doublets. Our quantitative determination of the magnetic anisotropy highlights the relevance of an axial $g$-tensor for SMM behaviour and suggests that fast magnetic relaxation is mainly driven by a thermally assisted quantum tunnelling process via low-lying excited states.

Magnetic order and Li-diffusion in the 1/3-filled Kagome layers of antiperovskite Lithium-ion battery materials (Li$_2$Fe)SO and (Li$_2$Fe)SeO

The recently discovered lithium-rich antiperovskites (Li$_2$Fe)SeO and (Li$_2$Fe)SO host lithium and iron ions on the same atomic position which octahedrally coordinates to central oxygens. In a cubic antiperovskite these sites form Kagome planes stacked along the <111> directions which triangular motifs induce high geometric frustration in the diluted magnetic sublattice for antiferromagnetic interactions. Despite their compelling properties as high-capacity Li-ion battery cathode materials, very little is known about the electronic and magnetic properties of lithium-rich antiperovskites. We report static magnetization, M\"ossbauer, and NMR studies on both compounds. Our data reveal a Pauli paramagnetic-like behaviour, a long-range antiferromagnetically ordered ground state below 50 K and a regime of short-range magnetic correlations up to 100 K. Our results are consistent with a random Li-Fe distribution on the shared lattice position. In addition, Li-hopping is observed above 200 K with an activation energy of E$_a$ = 0.47 eV. Overall, our data elucidate static magnetism in a disordered magnetically frustrated and presumably semimetallic system with thermally induced ion diffusion dynamics.

The Interplay of Single Ion Anisotropy and Magnetic 3d-4f Interactions in V$^{\rm III}_2$Ln$^{\rm III}_2$ Butterfly Complexes

Within the framework of 3d-4f molecular magnets, the most thoroughly investigated architecture is that of butterfly-shaped coordination clusters as it provides an ideal testbed to study fundamental magnetic interactions. Here, we report the synthesis and characterisation of a series of isostructural V$^{\rm III}_2$Ln$^{\rm III}_2$ butterfly complexes, where Ln = Y (1Y), Tb (2Tb), Dy (3Dy), Ho (4Ho), Er (5Er), Tm (6Tm), Yb (7Yb), which extends the previous study on isostructural butterflies with Cr$^{\rm III}$, Mn$^{\rm III}$ and Fe$^{\rm III}$. In zero external field, compounds 2Tb, 3Dy and 4Ho show clear maxima in the out-of-phase component of the ac susceptibility whereas small magnetic fields are needed to suppress quantum tunneling in 6Tm. Combined high-field electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and magnetisation measurements unambiguously reveal an easy-plane anisotropy of the V$^{\rm III}$ ion and antiferromagnetic Ising-like 3d-4f exchange couplings. The strength of $J_{\rm 3d-4f}$ is shown to decrease upon variation of the 4f ion from Tb to Ho, while increasing antiferromagnetic interaction can be observed from Ho to Tm. The exact inverse chemical trend is found for the relative angle between the 3d and 4f main anisotropy axes, which highlights the important role of the lanthanide 4f electron distribution anisotropy for 3d-4f exchange.

Uniaxial Pressure Effects, Phase Diagram, and Tricritical Point in the Centrosymmetric Skyrmion Lattice Magnet GdRu$_2$Si$_2$

The magnetic phase diagram, magnetoelastic coupling, and uniaxial pressure effects of centrosymmetric magnetic skyrmion-hosting GdRu$_2$Si$_2$ are investigated by means of high-resolution capacitance dilatometry in fields up to 15\,T supported by specific heat and magnetisation studies. In addition to the previously reported phases in the $H$-$T$ phase diagram, we observe a third antiferromagnetic phase in zero magnetic field. We present the magnetic phase diagram and find two unreported phases, one of which features a comparably giant uniaxial pressure dependence. Our dilatometric measurements show magnetoelastic effects associated with the various magnetic ordering phenomena. We determine the uniaxial pressure dependencies of the various phases, in particular of the skyrmion lattice phase which is enhanced at higher fields and temperatures and also widens at a rate of 0.07~T/GPa when uniaxial pressure is applied along the $c$ axis. The relevance of fluctuations is further highlighted by the presence of tricritical point indicated by our thermodynamic data at the phase boundary separating two double-\textit{Q} magnetic configurations between which the skyrmion pocket phase evolves upon further cooling.

Quasi-two-dimensional magnetism and antiferromagnetic ground state in Li$_2$FeSiO$_4$

Our experimental (neutron diffraction, M\"ossbauer spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat) and numerical studies on the evolution of short- and long-range magnetic order in $\gamma_{\rm II}$-Li\(_2\)FeSiO\(_4\) suggest a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) nature of magnetism. The experimental data obtained on single crystals imply long-range antiferromagnetic order below $T_{\rm N}= 17$~K. A broad maximum in magnetic susceptibility $\chi$ at $T_{\rm m}\simeq 28$~K, observation of magnetic entropy changes up to 100~K and anisotropy in $\chi$ are indicative of low-dimensional magnetism and suggest short-range magnetic correlations up to 200~K. Neutron diffraction shows that long-range antiferromagnetic order is characterised by the propagation vector k=(1/2,0,1/2). The ordered moment $\mu = 2.50(2) \mu_B$ /Fe, at $T = 1.5$~K, is along the crystallographic $a$-axis. This is consistent with the observed static hyperfine field of $B_{\rm hyp}=14.8(3)$\,T by M\"ossbauer spectroscopy which indicates significant orbital contributions. The temperature dependence of $B_{\rm hyp}$ yields the critical exponent $\beta=0.116(12)$ which is in the regime of the 2D Ising behaviour. LSDA+U studies exploiting the experimental spin structure suggest dominating magnetic exchange coupling within the $ac$-layers (i.e., $J_3\simeq -6$~K and $J_6\simeq-2$~K) while interlayer coupling is much smaller and partly frustrated. This confirms the 2D nature of magnetism and is in full agreement with the experimental findings.

Signatures of a Quantum Critical Endpoint in the Kitaev Candidate Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$

The putative Kitaev material Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ has recently been proposed to enter a quantum spin disordered state when magnetic fields are applied in parallel to the honeycomb layers. In this report we uncover signatures of a quantum critical endpoint (QCEP) associated with the assumed order-disorder transition by means of high-resolution capacitance dilatometry. At the critical field $B_\mathrm{C} \simeq 6$~T , a sign change of the out-of-plane thermal expansion coefficient $\alpha_c$ indicates accumulation of entropy upon crossing the phase boundary. The proportional relationship between isothermal magnetisation and magnetostriction signals that the QCEP can be tuned by magnetic field and pressure simultaneously. The presented results expand the material classes that exhibit metamagnetic quantum criticality to honeycomb antiferromagnets with possible Kitaev interactions.

Slow Spin Relaxation and Low-Temperature Spin Freezing in Disordered Fluorite Ho$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$

We report on the origin of spin freezing in the disordered fluorite Ho$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$. The system is investigated by low-temperature heat capacity as well as by DC and AC magnetization. While the system does not show a long-range magnetic order down to at least $T = 280$~mK, we observe signatures of slow spin dynamics, magnetic field induced relaxation processes at relatively high temperatures, and a spin-frozen state below $T = 0.6$~K. Our results suggest that similar to the canonical spin ice systems Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ [Ehlers 2004] and Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ [Snyder 2001], spin freezing in Ho$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ is preceded by two slow spin relaxation processes; the first forms a field-induced region extending to at least 18~K and the second is rather field-independent and appears at $T_{\mathrm g2} = 1$~K [Ramon 2020].

Magnetic properties and field-induced phenomena in the Jeff = 1/2 distorted kagome antiferromagnet

The intertwining between competing degrees of freedom, anisotropy, and frustration-induced quantum fluctuations offers an ideal ground to realize exotic quantum phenomena in the rare-earth-based kagome lattice. The magnetic susceptibility reveals the presence of two energy scales in agreement with the INS results. The higher energy state is dominated by CEF excitations, where the lowest Kramers ground-state doublet is well separated from the excited state suggesting that the compound realizes a low-energy state at low temperatures. The second energy scale is witnessed via thermodynamic results that reveal an anomaly at 0.3 K typical of a phase transition, which is attributed to the presence of complex magnetic ordering phenomena. The broad maximum in the specific heat well above 0.3 K indicates the presence of short-range spin correlations that is corroborated by muon spin relaxation rate results. The isothermal magnetization reveals a field-induced 1/3 magnetization plateau at low temperatures. muSR relaxation rate experiments, on the other hand, neither show the signature of a phase transition nor spin-freezing down to 34 mK. The ZF muSR relaxation is governed by the Orbach process and reveals the presence of a fluctuating state owing to the depopulation of crystal field levels reflected as a constant value of relaxation rate in the temperature range 0.4-10 K. NMR results indicate the presence of fluctuating Nd3+ moments down to 1.8 K consistent with muSR experiments. Our comprehensive results reveal that a field-induced quantum critical phenomenon is at play in this frustrated kagome magnet and enable us to construct a phase diagram exemplifying the proximity effect of competing magnetic states. This sets the stage to investigate the broad RE3BWO9 family of rare-earth kagome magnets promising to host exotic quantum states driven by spin-orbit coupling and geometrical frustration.

The role of magnetoelastic coupling and magnetic anisotropy in MnTiO$_3$

We report the thermodynamic properties studied by thermal expansion, magnetostriction, magnetisation, and specific heat measurements as well as the low-energy magnetic excitations of \mto\ and investigate how magneto-elastic coupling and magnetic anisotropy affect the evolution of long-range order and the magnetic phase diagram. Specifically, we utilise high-resolution capacitance dilatometry and antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) studies by means of high-frequency electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) spectroscopy. The role of anisotropy is reflected by spin-reorientation at $B_{\rm{SF}}$~$\simeq 6$~T and a corresponding sign change in $\partial T_{\rm N}/\partial B$. Analysis of the AFMR modes enables us to establish the zero-field excitation gap $Δ$ as well as its temperature dependence. We derive the effective anisotropy field $B_\mathrm{A} = 0.16(1)$~T which predominately originates from out-of-plane nearest-neighbour dipole-dipole interactions. Despite the nearly fully quenched orbital moment, our data show pronounced thermal expansion and magnetostriction anomalies at $T_{\rm N}$ and $B_{\rm{SF}}$ , respectively, which allows the experimental determination of sizable uniaxial pressure dependencies, i.e., $\partial B_{\rm SF}/\partial p_{\rm c} = -0.20(2)$~T/GPa, $\partial T_{\rm N}/ \partial p_b = 0.69(12)$~K/GPa, and $\partial T_{\rm N}/ \partial p_c = -2.0(4)$~K/GPa. Notably, short-range magnetic order appears up to at least 3$T_{\rm N}$ , as indicated by anisotropic lattice distortion, the violation of a constant Grüneisen behavior, and the presence of local magnetic fields detected by HF-ESR.

Strong uniaxial pressure dependencies evidencing spin-lattice coupling and spin fluctuations in Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$

Single crystals of Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ were studied by high-resolution capacitance dilatometry to obtain in-plane ($B\parallel ab$) and out-of-plane ($B\parallel c$) thermal expansion and magnetostriction at temperatures between 2 and 300 K and in magnetic fields up to 15 T. The anomalies in both response functions lead to the 'magnetoelastic' phase diagrams and separate the paramagnetic (PM), ferromagnetic low-temperature/low-field (LTF) and aligned ferromagnetic (FM) phases. The presence of two distinct thermal expansion anomalies at small fields $B\parallel ab$ of different magnetic field dependence clearly supports the scenario of an intermediate region separating PM and LTF phases and is indicative of a tricritical point. Simulations of the magnetostriction using the Stoner-Wohlfarth model for uniaxial anisotropy demonstrate that the observed quadratic-in-field behavior in the LTF phase is in line with a rotation of the spins from the preferred $c$ direction into the $ab$ plane. Both the LTF and the PM phase close to T$_{\rm C}$ exhibit very strong pressure dependencies of the magnetization, ${\partial}\ln{M_{\rm ab}}/{\partial}p_{\rm ab}$, of several hundred %/GPa and also the transition from the LTF to the FM phase strongly depends on $p_{\rm ab}$ ($\sim -$280%/GPa), indicating a strong decrease of the uniaxial anisotropy under applied in-plane pressure. Our data clearly demonstrate the relevance of critical fluctuations and magnetoelastic coupling in Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$.

Strong effects of uniaxial pressure and short-range correlations in Cr2Ge2Te6

Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ is a quasi-2D semiconducting van der Waals ferromagnet down to the bilayer with great potential for technological applications. Engineering the critical temperature to achieve room temperature applications is one of the critical next steps on this path. Here, we report high-resolution capacitance dilatometry studies on Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ single crystals which directly prove significant magnetoelastic coupling and provide quantitative values of the large uniaxial pressure effects on long-range magnetic order (${\partial}T_{\mathrm{C}}/{\partial}p_{\mathrm{c}}$ = 24.7 K/GPa and ${\partial}T_{\mathrm{C}}/{\partial}p_{\mathrm{ab}}$ = $-$15.6 K/GPa) derived from thermodynamic relations. Moderate in-plane strain is thus sufficient to strongly enhance ferromagnetism in Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ up to room temperature. Moreover, unambiguous signs for short-range magnetic order up to 200~K are found.

Linear magnetoelastic coupling and magnetic phase diagrams of the buckled-kagomé antiferromagnet Cu$_3$Bi(SeO$_3$)$_2$O$_2$Cl

Single crystals of Cu$_3$Bi(SeO$_3$)$_2$O$_2$Cl were investigated using high-resolution capacitance dilatometry in magnetic fields up to 15 T. Pronounced magnetoelastic coupling is found upon evolution of long-range antiferromagnetic order at T$_{\mathrm{N}} = 26.4(3)$ K. Grüneisen analysis reveals moderate effects of uniaxial pressure on T$_{\mathrm{N}}$, of $1.8(4)$ K/GPa, $-0.62(15)$ K/GPa and $0.33(10)$ K/GPa for $p \parallel a$, $b$, and $c$, respectively. Below 22 K, Grüneisen scaling fails which implies the presence of competing interactions. The structural phase transition at T$_{\mathrm{S}} = 120.7(5)$ K is much more sensitive to uniaxial pressure than T$_{\mathrm{N}}$, with strong effects of up to $27(3)$ K/GPa ($p \parallel c$). Magnetostriction and magnetization measurements reveal a linear magnetoelastic coupling for $B\parallel c$ below T$_{\mathrm{N}}$, as well as a mixed phase behavior above the tricritical point around 0.4 T. An analysis of the critical behavior in zero-field points to three-dimensional (3D) Ising-like magnetic ordering. In addition, the magnetic phase diagrams for fields along the main crystalline axes are reported.
