Quasiparticles and charge transfer at the two surfaces of the honeycomb iridate Na$_2$IrO$_3$

Direct experimental investigations of the low-energy electronic structure of the Na$_2$IrO$_3$ iridate insulator are sparse and draw two conflicting pictures. One relies on flat bands and a clear gap, the other involves dispersive states approaching the Fermi level, pointing to surface metallicity. Here, by a combination of angle-resolved photoemission, photoemission electron microscopy, and x-ray absorption, we show that the correct picture is more complex and involves an anomalous band, arising from charge transfer from Na atoms to Ir-derived states. Bulk quasiparticles do exist, but in one of the two possible surface terminations the charge transfer is smaller and they remain elusive.

Spectropolarimetric Survey of Hydrogen-rich White Dwarf Stars

We have conducted a survey of 61 southern white dwarfs searching for magnetic fields using Zeeman spectropolarimetry. Our objective is to obtain a magnetic field distribution for these objects and, in particular, to find white dwarfs with weak fields. We found one possible candidate (WD 0310-688) that may have a weak magnetic field of -6.1+/-2.2 kG. Next, we determine the fraction and distribution of magnetic white dwarfs in the Solar neighborhood, and investigate the probability of finding more of these objects based on the current incidence of magnetism in white dwarfs within 20 pc of the Sun. We have also analyzed the spectra of the white dwarfs to obtain effective temperatures and surface gravities.

Evidence for an Excited Hyperon State in pp -> p K^+ Y^{0*}

Indications for the production of a neutral excited hyperon in the reaction pp -> p K^+ Y^{0*} are observed in an experiment performed with the ANKE spectrometer at COSY-Jülich at a beam momentum of 3.65 GeV/c. Two final states were investigated simultaneously, viz. Y^{0*} -> pi^+X^- and pi^-X^+, and consistent results were obtained in spite of the quite different experimental conditions. The parameters of the hyperon state are M(Y^{0*})= (1480 +/- 15) MeV/c^2 and Gamma(Y^{0*})= (60 +/- 15) MeV/c^2. The production cross section is of the order of few hundred nanobarns. Since the isospin of the Y^{0*} has not been determined here, it could either be an observation of the Sigma(1480), a one-star resonance of the PDG tables, or alternatively a Lambda hyperon. Relativistic quark models for the baryon spectrum do not predict any excited hyperon in this mass range and so the Y^{0*} may be of exotic nature.

Quantum-magneto oscillations in a supramolecular Mn(II)-[3 x 3] grid

The magnetic grid molecule Mn(II)-[3 x 3] has been studied by high-field torque magnetometry at 3He temperatures. At fields above 5 T, the torque vs. field curves exhibit an unprecedented oscillatory behavior. A model is proposed which describes these magneto oscillations well.

Ferromagnetic coupling and magnetic anisotropy in molecular Ni(II) squares

We investigated the magnetic properties of two isostructural Ni(II) metal complexes [Ni4Lb8] and [Ni4Lc8]. In each molecule the four Ni(II) centers form almost perfect regular squares. Magnetic coupling and anisotropy of single crystals were examined by magnetization measurements and in particular by high-field torque magnetometry at low temperatures. The data were analyzed in terms of an effective spin Hamiltonian appropriate for Ni(II) centers. For both compounds, we found a weak intramolecular ferromagnetic coupling of the four Ni(II) spins and sizable single-ion anisotropies of the easy-axis type. The coupling strengths are roughly identical for both compounds, whereas the zero-field-splitting parameters are significantly different. Possible reasons for this observation are discussed.

Proton--induced deuteron breakup at GeV energies with forward emission of a fast proton pair

A study of the deuteron breakup reaction $pd \to (pp)n$ with forward emission of a fast proton pair with small excitation energy $E_{pp}<$ 3 MeV has been performed at the ANKE spectrometer at COSY--Jülich. An exclusive measurement was carried out at six proton--beam energies $T_p=$~0.6,~0.7,~0.8,~0.95,~1.35, and 1.9 GeV by reconstructing the momenta of the two protons. The differential cross section of the breakup reaction, averaged up to $8^{\circ}$ over the cm polar angle of the total momentum of the $pp$ pairs, has been obtained. Since the kinematics of this process is quite similar to that of backward elastic $pd \to dp$ scattering, the results are compared to calculations based on a theoretical model previously applied to the $pd \to dp$ process.

Butterfly hysteresis loop at non-zero bias field in antiferromagnetic molecular rings: cooling by adiabatic magnetization

At low temperatures, the magnetization of the molecular ferric wheel NaFe$_6$ exhibits a step at a critical field $B_c$ due to a field-induced level-crossing. By means of high-field torque magnetometry we observed a hysteretic behavior at the level-crossing with a characteristic butterfly shape which is analyzed in terms of a dissipative two-level model. Several unusual features were found. The non-zero bias field of the level-crossing suggests the possibility of cooling by adiabatic magnetization.

Intrinsic Tunneling in Cuprates and Manganites

The most anisotropic high temperature superconductors like Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8, as well as the recently discovered layered manganite La1.4Sr1.6Mn2O7 are layered metallic systems where the interlayer current transport occurs via sequential tunneling of charge carriers. As a consequence, in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 adjacent CuO2 double layers form an intrinsic Josephson tunnel junction while in in La1.4Sr1.6Mn2O7 tunneling of spin polarized charge carriers between adjacent MnO2 layers leads to an intrinsic spin valve effect. We present and discuss interlayer transport experiments for both systems. To perform the experiments small sized mesa structures were patterned on top of single crystals of the above materials defining stacks of a small number of intrinsic Josephson junctions and intrinsic spin valves, respectively.
