An indirect dark matter search with diffuse gamma rays from the Galactic Centre with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer

The detection of non-baryonic dark matter through its gamma-ray annihilation in the centre of our galaxy has been studied. The gamma fluxes according to different models have been simulated and compared to those expected to be observed with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS), during a long-term mission on board of the International Space Station. Under the assumption that the dark matter halo is composed of the lightest, stable supersymmetric particle, the neutralino, the results of the simulations in the framework of mSUGRA models, show that with a cuspy dark matter halo or a clumpy halo, the annihilation gamma-ray signal would be detected by AMS. More optimistic perspectives are obtained with the Anomaly Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking (AMSB) model. The latter leads also to a cosmologically important 6Li abundance. Finally, the discovery potential for the massive Kaluza-Klein dark matter candidates has been evaluated and their detection looks feasible.

A 3-d simulation of the atmospheric neutrinos

The first AMS flight in June 1998 on board of the space shuttle Discovery at an altitude of approximately 380 km unveiled unexpected features of the cosmic rays spectra below the Earth geomagnetic cut-off. In addition to a secondary flux of particles at all latitude, a ring of high energy particles (up to 6 GeV) and an anomalous ratio e+/e- as high as 4 was observed near the geomagnetic equator. This paper describes a simulation of the interaction of primary cosmic rays with atmosphere in which the effect of the Earth magnetic field is included . Using the GEANT3 package for the tracking of particles with the GFLUKA associated package for the physics of interactions, this simulation reproduces quite well the AMS experimental results and the CAPRICE muon data at ground level. The predictions of this model for the flux of atmospheric neutrino are compared with the Super-Kamiokande results and with the results of other atmospheric neutrino models.

The AMS-01 Aerogel Threshold Cherenkov counter

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer in a precursor version (AMS-01), was flown in June 1998 on a 51.6 degrees orbit and at altitudes ranging between 320 and 390 km, on board of the space shuttle Discovery (flight STS-91). AMS-01 included an Aerogel Threshold Cherenkov counter (ATC) to separate antiprotons from electrons and positrons from protons, for momenta below 3.5 GeV/c. This paper presents a description of the ATC counter and reports on its performances during the flight STS-91.
