Revisiting the pulsational characteristics of the exoplanet host star $β$ Pictoris

Exoplanet properties crucially depend on their host stars' parameters. In case the exoplanet host star shows pulsations, asteroseismology can be used for an improved description of the stellar parameters. We aim to revisit the pulsational properties of beta Pic and identify its pulsation modes from normalised amplitudes in five different passbands. We also investigate the potential presence of a magnetic field. We conduct a frequency analysis using three seasons of BRITE-Constellation observations in the BRITE blue and red filters, the ~620-day long bRing light curve and the nearly 8-year long SMEI photometric time series. We calculate normalised amplitudes using all passbands including previously published values obtained from ASTEP observations. We investigate the magnetic properties of beta Pic using spectropolarimetric observations conducted with the HARPSpol instrument. Using 2D rotating models, we fit the normalised amplitudes and frequencies through Monte Carlo Markov Chains. We identify 15 pulsation frequencies in the range from 34 to 55c/d, where two display clear amplitude variability. We use the normalised amplitudes in up to five passbands to identify the modes as three l = 1, six l = 2 and six l = 3 modes. beta Pic is shown to be non-magnetic with an upper limit of the possible undetected dipolar field of 300G. Multiple fits to the frequencies and normalised amplitudes are obtained including one with a near equator-on inclination for beta Pic, which corresponds to our expectations based on the orbital inclination of beta Pic b and the orientation of the circumstellar disk. This solution leads to a rotation rate of 27% of the Keplerian break-up velocity, a radius of 1.497+-0.025Rsun, and a mass of 1.797+-0.035Msun. The ~2% errors in radius and mass do not account for uncertainties in the models and a potentially erroneous mode-identification.

MASCARA-4 b/bRing-1b - A retrograde hot Jupiter around the bright A3V star HD 85628

In this paper, we aim to characterize a transiting planetary candidate in the southern skies found in the combined MASCARA and bRing data sets of HD 85628, an A3V star of V = 8.2 mag at a distance 172 pc, to confirm its planetary nature. The candidate was originally detected in data obtained jointly with the MASCARA and bRing instruments using a BLS search for transit events. Further photometry was taken by the 0.7 m CHAT, and radial velocity measurements with FIDEOS on the ESO 1.0 m Telescope. High resolution spectra during a transit were taken with CHIRON on the SMARTS 1.5 m telescope to target the Doppler shadow of the candidate. We confirm the existence of a hot Jupiter transiting the bright A3V star HD 85628, which we co-designate as MASCARA-4b and bRing-1b. It is in a 2.824 day orbit, with an estimated planet radius of $1.53 ^{0.07}_{0.04}$ $R_{\rm{Jup}}$ and an estimated planet mass of $3.1 \pm 0.9$ $M_{\rm{Jup}}$, putting it well within the planet mass regime.. The CHAT observations show a partial transit, reducing the probability that the transit was around a faint background star. The CHIRON observations show a clear Doppler shadow, implying that the transiting object is in a retrograde orbit with $|λ| = 247.5 \pm 1.6 $\textdegree. The planet orbits at at a distance of 0.047 $\pm$ 0.004 AU from the star and has a zero-albedo equilibrium temperature of 2100 $\pm$ 100 K. In addition, we find that HD 85628 has a previously unreported stellar companion star in the Gaia DR2 data demonstrating common proper motion and parallax at 4.3 arcsecond separation (projected separation $\sim$740 AU), and with absolute magnitude consistent with being a K/M dwarf.

Doubly Charmed Baryons in COMPASS

The search for doubly charmed baryons has been a topic for COMPASS from the beginning. Requiring however a complete spectrometer and highest possible trigger rates this measurement has been postponed. The scenario for such a measurement in the second phase of COMPASS is outlined here. First studies of triggering and simulation of the setup have been performed. New rate estimates based on recent measurements from SELEX at FNAL are presented.

QCD Matrix Elements + Parton Showers

We propose a method for combining QCD matrix elements and parton showers in Monte Carlo simulations of hadronic final states in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. The matrix element and parton shower domains are separated at some value $y_{ini}$ of the jet resolution, defined according to the $k_T$-clustering algorithm. The matrix elements are modified by Sudakov form factors and the parton showers are subjected to a veto procedure to cancel dependence on $y_{ini}$ to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. The method provides a leading-order description of hard multi-jet configurations together with jet fragmentation, while avoiding the most serious problems of double counting. We present first results of an approximate implementation using the event generator APACIC++.

AMEGIC++ 1.0, A Matrix Element Generator In C++

The new matrix element generator AMEGIC++ is introduced, dedicated to describe multi-particle production in high energy particle collisions. It automatically generates helicity amplitudes for the processes under consideration and constructs suitable, efficient integration channels for the multi-channel phase space integration. The corresponding expressions for the amplitudes and the integrators are stored in library files to be linked to the main program.

Parton showers and multijet events

A Monte-Carlo event-generator has been developed which is dedicated to simulate electron-positron annihilations. Especially a new approach for the combination of matrix elements and parton showers ensures the independence of the hadronization parameters from the CMS energy. This enables for the first time the description of multijet-topologies, e.g. four jet angles, over a wide range of energy, without changing any parameter of the model. Covering all processes of the standard model our simulator is capable to describe experiments at present and future accelerators, i.e. the LEP collider and a possible Next Linear Collider(NLC).

Report of the QCD Working Group

The activities of the QCD working group concentrated on improving the understanding and Monte Carlo simulation of multi-jet final states due to hard QCD processes at LEP, i.e. quark-antiquark plus multi-gluon and/or secondary quark production, with particular emphasis on four-jet final states and b-quark mass effects. Specific topics covered are: relevant developments in the main event generators PYTHIA, HERWIG and ARIADNE; the new multi-jet generator APACIC++; description and tuning of inclusive (all-flavour) jet rates; quark mass effects in the three- and four-jet rates; mass, higher-order and hadronization effects in four-jet angular and shape distributions; b-quark fragmentation and gluon splitting into b-quarks.

APACIC++, A PArton Cascade In C++, version 1.0

APACIC++ is a Monte-Carlo event-generator dedicated for the simulation of electron-positron annihilations into jets. Within the framework of APACIC++, the emergence of jets is identified with the perturbative production of partons as governed by corresponding matrix elements. In addition to the build-in matrix elements describing the production of two and three jets, further programs can be linked allowing for the simultaneous treatment of higher numbers of jets. APACIC++ hosts a new approach for the combination of arbitrary matrix elements for the production of jets with the parton shower, which in turn models the evolution of these jets. For the evolution, different ordering schemes are available, namely ordering by virtualities or by angles. At the present state, the subsequent hadronization of the partons is accomplished by means of the Lund-string model as provided within Pythia. An appropriate interface is provieded. The program takes full advantage of the object-oriented features provided by C++ allowing for an equally abstract and transparent programming style.

APACIC++, A Parton Cascade in C++

In this talk the newly developped Monte-Carlo event generator {\tt APACIC++} suitable to describe multijet-events in high-energetic electron-positron annihilations is presented. A new ansatz to match the corresponding matrix elements for the production of jets via the strong and electroweak interactions to the subsequent parton shower modelling the inner-jet evolution is discussed in some detail. Results obtained with {\tt APACIC++} are compared to other QCD event generators and to some representative experimental data.

Multijet events and parton showers

We propose a general approach for the description of multijet events in the framework of QCD event generators. We introduce a new algorithm to match parton showers and arbitrary matrix elements for the production of any number of jets via the strong or electroweak interaction. We developped a new parton cascade code capable to deal with multijet events at LEP energies and beyond.
