First observation of CP violation and improved measurement of the branching fraction and polarization of B0 -> D*+ D*- decays

We report the measurement of the branching fraction, the polarization, and the parameters of the time-dependent CP violation in B0 -> D*+ D*- decays using a data sample of 772 million BB pairs, collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We obtain a branching fraction of B = (7.82 +- 0.38 +- 0.63) x10^{-4}, a CP-odd fraction of R_\perp = 0.138 +- 0.024 +- 0.006 and, additionally, a fraction of the longitudinal component in the transversity base of R_0 = 0.624 +- 0.029 +- 0.011. The measured values of the parameters of the CP violation are S_{D*+ D*-} = -0.79 +- 0.13 +- 0.03 and A_{D*+ D*-} = 0.15 +- 0.08 +- 0.04.

First observation of exclusive $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays into light hadrons

Using samples of 102 million $Υ(1S)$ and 158 million $Υ(2S)$ events collected with the Belle detector, we study exclusive hadronic decays of these two bottomonium resonances to the three-body final states $ϕK^+ K^-$, $ωπ^+ π^-$ and $K^{\ast 0}(892) K^- π^+ $, and to the two-body Vector-Tensor ($ϕf_2'(1525)$, $ωf_2(1270)$, $ρa_2(1320)$ and $K^{\ast 0}(892) \bar{K}_2^{\ast 0}(1430) $) and Axial-vector-Pseudoscalar ($K_1(1270)^+ K^-$, $K_1(1400)^+ K^- $ and $b_1(1235)^+ π^- $) pairs. Signals are observed for the first time in the $Υ(1S) \to ϕK^+ K^-$, $ωπ^+ π^-$, $K^{\ast 0} K^- π^+$, $K^{\ast0} K_2^{\ast 0}$ and $Υ(2S) \to ϕK^+ K^-$, $K^{\ast 0} K^- π^+$ decay modes. Branching fractions are determined for all the processes, while 90% confidence level upper limits are established on the branching fractions for the modes with a statistical significance less than $3σ$. The ratios of the branching fractions of $Υ(2S)$ and $Υ(1S)$ decays into the same final state are used to test a perturbative QCD prediction for OZI suppressed bottomonium decays.

Dual-BRST symmetry: 6D Abelian 3-form gauge theory

Within the framework of Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism, we demonstrate the existence of the novel off-shell nilpotent (anti-)dual-BRST symmetries in the context of a six (5 + 1)-dimensional (6D) free Abelian 3-form gauge theory. Under these local and continuous symmetry transformations, the total gauge-fixing term of the Lagrangian density remains invariant. This observation should be contrasted with the off-shell nilpotent (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations, under which, the total kinetic term of the theory remains invariant. The anticommutator of the above nilpotent (anti-)BRST and (anti-)dual-BRST transformations leads to the derivation of a bosonic symmetry in the theory. There exists a discrete symmetry transformation in the theory which provides a thread of connection between the nilpotent (anti-)BRST and (anti-)dual-BRST transformations. This theory is endowed with a ghost-scale symmetry, too. We discuss the algebra of these symmetry transformations and show that the structure of the algebra is reminiscent of the algebra of de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry.

Measurement of $B^0 \to J/ψη^{(}{}'{}^{)}$ and Constraint on the $η-η'$ Mixing Angle

We measure the branching fractions of $B^{0} \to J/ψη^{(}{}'{}^{)}$ decays with the complete Belle data sample of $772 \times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ events collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The results for the branching fractions are: ${\cal B}(B^{0} \to J/ψη)=(12.3 \pm ^{1.8}_{1.7} \pm 0.7) \times 10^{-6}$ and ${\cal B}(B^{0} \to J/ψη') < 7.4 \times 10^{-6}$ at 90% confidence level. The $η-η'$ mixing angle is constrained to be less than $ 42.2^{\circ}$ at 90% confidence level.

Supersymmetric Oscillator: Novel Symmetries

We discuss various continuous and discrete symmetries of the supersymmetric simple harmonic oscillator (SHO) in one (0 + 1)-dimension of spacetime and show their relevance in the context of mathematics of differential geometry. We show the existence of a novel set of discrete symmetries in the theory which has, hitherto, not been discussed in the literature on theoretical aspects of SHO. We also point out the physical relevance of our present investigation.

Measurement of the CP-violation Parameter sin2$ϕ_1$ with a New Tagging Method at the $Υ(5S)$ Resonance

We report a measurement of the CP-violation parameter sin2$ϕ_1$ at the $Υ(5S)$ resonance using a new tagging method, called "$B$-$π$ tagging." In $Υ(5S)$ decays containing a neutral $B$ meson, a charged $B$, and a charged pion, the neutral $B$ is reconstructed in the $J/ψK_S^0$ CP-eigenstate decay channel. The initial flavor of the neutral $B$ meson at the moment of the $Υ(5S)$ decay is opposite to that of the charged $B$ and may thus be inferred from the charge of the pion without reconstructing the charged $B$. From the asymmetry between $B$-$π^+$ and $B$-$π^-$ tagged $J/ψK_S^0$ yields, we determine sin2$ϕ_1$ = 0.57 $\pm$ 0.58(stat) $\pm$ 0.06(syst). The results are based on 121 fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider.

Quantum Key Distribution with Qubits Encoded in Qutrit

We present a novel one-way quantum key distribution protocol based on 3-dimensional quantum state, a qutrit, that encodes two qubits in its 2-dimensional subspaces. The qubits hold the classical bit information that has to be shared between the legitimate users. Alice sends such a qutrit to Bob where he decodes one of the qubit and measures it along the random Pauli basis. This scheme has higher secure key rate at longer transmission distance than the standard BB84 protocol.

Experimental and theoretical study of structural properties and phase transitions in YAsO4 and YCrO4

We have performed experimental and theoretical studies of the structural stability of YAsO4 and YCrO4 at high pressures. X-ray diffraction experiments together with ab initio total-energy and lattice-dynamics calculations have allowed us to completely characterize a pressure-induced structural phase transition from the zircon to the scheelite structure in both compounds. Furthermore, total-energy calculations have been performed to check the relative stabilities of different candidate structures at different pressures and allow us to propose for YAsO4 the zircon \rightarrow scheelite \rightarrow SrUO4-type sequence of structures. In this sequence, sixfold arsenic coordination is attained for the SrUO4-type structure above 32 GPa. The whole sequence of transitions is discussed in comparison with YVO4, YPO4, YNbO4, YMoO4, and YTaO4. Also a comparative discussion of lattice-dynamics properties is presented. The band-gap for YAsO4 and YCrO4 and band structure for YAsO4 are also reported. Finally, the room-temperature equation of state of different compounds is also obtained.

Small Quadrupole Deformation for the Dipole Bands in 112In

High spin states in $^{112}$In were investigated using $^{100}$Mo($^{16}$O, p3n) reaction at 80 MeV. The excited level have been observed up to 5.6 MeV excitation energy and spin $\sim$ 20$\hbar$ with the level scheme showing three dipole bands. The polarization and lifetime measurements were carried out for the dipole bands. Tilted axis cranking model calculations were performed for different quasi-particle configurations of this doubly odd nucleus. Comparison of the calculations of the model with the B(M1) transition strengths of the positive and negative parity bands firmly established their configurations.

Study of B^{+-} -> K^{+-}(K_S K pi)^0 Decay and Determination of eta_c and eta_c(2S) Parameters

We report the results of a study of $B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}η_c$ and $B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}η_c(2S)$ decays followed by $η_c$ and $η_c(2S)$ decays to $(K_SKπ)^0$. The results are obtained from a data sample containing 535 million $B\bar{B}$-meson pairs collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. We measure the products of the branching fractions ${\mathcal B}(B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}η_c){\mathcal B}(η_c\to K_S K^{\pm}π^{\mp})=(26.7\pm 1.4(stat)^{+2.9}_{-2.6}(syst)\pm 4.9(model))\times 10^{-6}$ and ${\mathcal B}(B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}η_c(2S)){\mathcal B}(η_c(2S)\to K_S K^{\pm}π^{\mp})=(3.4^{+2.2}_{-1.5}(stat+model)^{+0.5}_{-0.4} syst))\times 10^{-6}$. Interference with the non-resonant component leads to significant model uncertainty in the measurement of these product branching fractions. Our analysis accounts for this interference and allows the model uncertainty to be reduced. We also obtain the following charmonia masses and widths: $M(η_c)=(2985.4\pm 1.5(stat)^{+0.5}_{-2.0}(syst))$ MeV/$c^2$, $Γ(η_c)=(35.1\pm 3.1(stat)^{+1.0}_{-1.6}(syst))$ MeV/$c^2$, $M(η_c(2S))=(3636.1^{+3.9}_{-4.2}(stat+model)^{+0.7}_{-2.0}(syst))$ MeV/$c^2$, $Γ(η_c(2S))=(6.6^{+8.4}_{-5.1}(stat+model)^{+2.6}_{-0.9}(syst))$ MeV/$c^2$.

BRST analysis of topologically massive gauge theory: novel observations

A dynamical non-Abelian 2-form gauge theory (with B \wedge F term) is endowed with the "scalar" and "vector" gauge symmetry transformations. In our present endeavor, we exploit the latter gauge symmetry transformations and perform the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) analysis of the four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) topologically massive non-Abelian 2-form gauge theory. We demonstrate the existence of some novel features that have, hitherto, not been observed in the context of BRST approach to 4D (non-)Abelian 1-form as well as Abelian 2-form and 3-form gauge theories. We comment on the differences between the novel features that emerge in the BRST analysis of the "scalar" and "vector" gauge symmetries of the theory.

Evidence for the Suppressed Decay B- -> DK-, D -> K+pi-

The suppressed decay chain B- -> DK-, D -> K+pi-, where D indicates a anti-D0 or D0 state, provides important information on the CP-violating angle phi_3. We measure the ratio R_{DK} of the decay rates to the favored mode B- -> DK-, D -> K-pi+ to be R_{DK} = [1.63^{+0.44}_{-0.41}(stat)^{+0.07}_{-0.13}(syst)] x 10^{-2}, which indicates the first evidence of the signal with a significance of 4.1sigma. We also measure the asymmetry A_{DK} between the charge-conjugate decays to be A_{DK} = -0.39^{+0.26}_{-0.28}(stat)^{+0.04}_{-0.03}(syst). The results are based on the full 772 x 10^6 B anti-B pair data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector.

Canonical brackets from continuous symmetries: Abelian 2-form gauge theory

We derive the canonical (anti-)commutation relations amongst the creation and annihilation operators of the various basic fields, present in the four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) free Abelian 2-from gauge theory, with the help of continuous symmetry transformations within the framework of Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism. We show that all the six continuous symmetries of the theory lead to the exactly the same non-vanishing (anti-)commutator amongst the creation and annihilation operators of the normal mode expansion of the basic fields of the theory.

New observations in the BRST analysis of dynamical non-Abelian 2-form gauge theory

We generalize the usual gauge transformations connected with the 1-form gauge potential to the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for the four (3+1)-dimensional (4D) topologically massive non-Abelian gauge theory that incorporates the famous (B\wedge F) term where there is an explicit topological coupling between 1-form and 2-form gauge fields. A novel feature of our present investigation is the observation that the (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations for the auxiliary 1-form field (K_μ) and 2-form gauge potential (B_{0i}) are not generated by the (anti-)BRST charges that are derived by exploiting all the relevant (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations corresponding to all the fields of the present theory. This observation is a new result because it is drastically different from the application of the BRST formalism to (non-)Abelian 1-form and Abelian 2-form as well as 3-form gauge theories.

Systematics of Anti magnetic rotation in even-even Cd isotopes

The lifetimes for the high spin levels of the yrast band of $^{110}$Cd has been measured. The estimated B(E2) values decrease with increase in angular momentum. This is the characteristic of Anti magnetic rotation as reported in $^{106,108}$Cd. However, alignment behavior of $^{110}$Cd is completely different from its even-even neighbors. A model based on classical particle plus rotor has been used to explore the underlying systematics and develop a self consistent picture for the observed behavior of these isotopes.

Absolutely anticommuting (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations for topologically massive Abelian gauge theory

We demonstrate the existence of the nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for the four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) topologically massive Abelian U(1) gauge theory that is described by the coupled Lagrangian densities (which incorporate the celebrated (B \wedge F) term). The absolute anticommutativity of the (anti-) BRST symmetry transformations is ensured by the existence of a Curci-Ferrari type restriction that emerges from the superfield formalism as well as from the equations of motion that are derived from the above coupled Lagrangian densities. We show the invariance of the action from the point of view of the symmetry considerations as well as superfield formulation. We discuss, furthermore, the topological term within the framework of superfield formalism and provide the geometrical meaning of its invariance under the (anti-) BRST symmetry transformations.

QoS Based Capacity Enhancement for WCDMA Network with Coding Scheme

The wide-band code division multiple access (WCDMA) based 3G and beyond cellular mobile wireless networks are expected to provide a diverse range of multimedia services to mobile users with guaranteed quality of service (QoS). To serve diverse quality of service requirements of these networks it necessitates new radio resource management strategies for effective utilization of network resources with coding schemes. Call admission control (CAC) is a significant component in wireless networks to guarantee quality of service requirements and also to enhance the network resilience. In this paper capacity enhancement for WCDMA network with convolutional coding scheme is discussed and compared with block code and without coding scheme to achieve a better balance between resource utilization and quality of service provisioning. The model of this network is valid for the real-time (RT) and non-real-time (NRT) services having different data rate. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the network using convolutional code in terms of capacity enhancement and QoS of the voice and video services.

Band crossing in Shears band of $^{108}$Cd

The level lifetimes have been measured for a Shears band of $^{108}$Cd which exhibits bandcrossing. The observed level energies and B(M1) rates have been successfully described by a semi-classical geometric model based on shear mechanism. In this geometric model, the bandcrossing in Shears band has been described as the reopening of the angle between the blades of a shear.
