Deep SAURON Spectral-Imaging of the diffuse Lyman-alpha halo LAB1 in SSA22

We have used the SAURON panoramic integral field spectrograph to study the structure of the Ly-alpha emission-line halo, LAB1, surrounding the sub-millimeter galaxy SMM J221726+0013. This emission-line halo was discovered during a narrow-band imaging survey of the z=3.1 large-scale structure in the SSA22 region. Our observations trace the emission halo out to almost 100 kpc from the sub-millimeter source and identify two distinct Ly-alpha `mini-haloes' around the nearby Lyman-break galaxies. The main emission region has a broad line profile, with variations in the line profile seeming chaotic and lacking evidence for a coherent velocity structure. The data also suggests that Ly-alpha emission is suppressed around the sub-mm source. Interpretation of the line structure needs care because Ly-alpha may be resonantly scattered, leading to complex radiative transfer effects, and we suggest that the suppression in this region arises because of such effects. We compare the structure of the central emission-line halo with local counter-parts, and find that the emission line halo around NGC 1275 in the Perseus cluster may be a good local analogue, although the high redshift halo is factor of ~100 more luminous and appears to have higher velocity broadening. Around the Lyman-break galaxy C15, the emission line is narrower, and a clear shear in the emission wavelength is seen. A plausible explanation for the line profile is that the emission gas is expelled from C15 in a bipolar outflow, similar to that seen in M82.

Formation and evolution of S0 galaxies: a SAURON case study of NGC7332

We present SAURON integral-field observations of the S0 galaxy NGC7332. Existing broad-band ground-based and HST photometry reveals a double disk structure and a boxy bulge interpreted as a bar viewed close to edge-on. The SAURON two-dimensional stellar kinematic maps confirm the existence of the bar and inner disk but also uncover the presence of a cold counter-rotating stellar component within the central 250 pc. The Hbeta and [OIII] emission line maps show that the ionised gas has a complex morphology and kinematics, including both a component counter-rotating with respect to the stars and a fainter co-rotating one. Analysis of the absorption line-strength maps show that NGC7332 is young everywhere. The presence of a large-scale bar can explain most of those properties, but the fact that we see a significant amount of unsettled gas, together with a few peculiar features in the maps, suggest that NGC7332 is still evolving. Interactions as well as bar-driven processes must thus have played an important role in the formation and evolution of NGC7332, and presumably of S0 galaxies in general.

OASIS High-Resolution Integral Field Spectroscopy of the SAURON Ellipticals and Lenticulars

We present a summary of high-spatial resolution follow-up observations of the elliptical (E) and lenticular (S0) galaxies in the SAURON survey using the OASIS integral field spectrograph. The OASIS observations explore the central 8x10" regions of these galaxies using a spatial sampling four times higher than SAURON, often revealing previously undiscovered features. Around 75% (31/48) of the SAURON E/S0s with central velocity dispersion >= 120 km/s were observed with OASIS, covering well the original SAURON representative sample. We present here an overview of this follow-up survey, and some preliminary results on individual objects, including a previously unreported counter-rotating core in NGC 4382; the decoupled stellar and gas velocity fields of NGC 2768; and the strong age gradient towards the centre of NGC 3489.

A SAURON look at galaxy bulges

Kinematic and population studies show that bulges are generally rotationally flattened systems similar to low-luminosity ellipticals. However, observations with state-of-the-art integral field spectrographs, such as SAURON, indicate that the situation is much more complex, and allow us to investigate phenomena such as triaxiality, kinematic decoupling and population substructure, and to study their connection to current formation and evolution scenarios for bulges of early-type galaxies. We present the examples of two S0 bulges from galaxies in our sample of nearby galaxies: one that shows all the properties expected from classical bulges (NGC5866), and another case that presents kinematic features appropriate for barred disk galaxies (NGC7332).

Early-type Galaxies in the Cluster Abell 2390 at z=0.23

To examine the evolution of the early-type galaxy population in the rich cluster Abell 2390 at z=0.23 we have gained spectroscopic data of 51 elliptical and lenticular galaxies with MOSCA at the 3.5 m telescope on Calar Alto Observatory. This investigation spans both a broad range in luminosity (-19.3>M_B>-22.3) and uses a wide field of view of 10'x10', therefore the environmental dependence of different formation scenarios can be analysed in detail as a function of radius from the cluster centre. Here we present results on the surface brightness modelling of galaxies where morphological and structural information is available in the F814W filter aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and investigate for this subsample the evolution of the Fundamental Plane.

Dynamical Modeling of SAURON Galaxies

We describe our program for the dynamical modeling of early-type galaxies observed with the panoramic integral-field spectrograph SAURON. We are using Schwarzschild's numerical orbit superposition method to reproduce in detail all kinematical and photometric observables, and recover the intrinsic orbital structure of the galaxies. Since catastrophes are the most prominent features in the orbital observables, two-dimensional kinematical coverage is essential to constrain the dynamical models.

A SAURON view of galaxies

We have measured the two-dimensional kinematics and line-strength distributions of 72 representative nearby early-type galaxies, out to approximately one effective radius, with our panoramic integral-field spectrograph SAURON. The resulting maps reveal a rich variety in kinematical structures and linestrength distributions, indicating that early-type galaxies are more complex systems than often assumed. We are building detailed dynamical models for these galaxies, to derive their intrinsic shape and dynamical structure, and to determine the mass of the supermassive central black hole. Here we focus on two examples, the compact elliptical M32 and the E3 galaxy NGC4365. These objects represent two extreme cases: M32 has very regular kinematics which can be represented accurately by an axisymmetric model in which all stars rotate around the short axis, while NGC4365 is a triaxial galaxy with a prominent kinematically decoupled core, with an inner core that rotates about an axis that is nearly perpendicular to the rotation axis of the main body of the galaxy. Our dynamical models for these objects demonstrate that two-dimensional observations are essential for deriving the intrinsic orbital structure and dark matter content of galaxies.

Galaxy Properties in Low X-Ray Luminosity Clusters at z=0.25

We present the first spectroscopic survey of intrinsically low Lx clusters at z>>0, with HST WFPC2 imaging and ground-based spectroscopy. We study 172 confirmed cluster members in a sample of ten clusters at z=0.23-0.3, with Lx<4.E43 h^{-2} ergs/s. The core of each cluster is imaged with WFPC2 in the F702W filter, and the spectroscopic sample is statistically complete to Mr-19.0+5log(h), within an 11' field. The clusters are dynamically well-separated from the surrounding field and the velocity dispersions range from ~350-850 km/s. Emission line galaxies in these clusters are relatively rare, comprising only 22 +/- 4% of the sample. There is no evidence that these emission-line galaxies are dynamically distinct from the majority of the cluster population, though our sample is too small to rule out the ~30% difference that has been observed in more massive clusters. We find eleven galaxies, comprising 6% of the cluster members, which are disk-dominated but show no sign of emission in their spectrum. Most of these are relatively isolated, spiral galaxies with smooth disks. We find no cluster members with a starburst or post-starburst spectrum. The striking similarity between the spectral and morphological properties of galaxies in these clusters and those of galaxies in more massive systems at similar redshifts implies that the physical processes responsible for truncating star formation in galaxies are not restricted to the rare, rich cluster environment, but are viable in much more common environments. In particular, we conclude that ram pressure stripping or cluster-induced starbursts cannot be solely responsible for the low star formation rates in these systems.

SAURON: Observations of E/S0/Sa galaxies

We present results from a new and unique integral-field spectrograph, SAURON. It has a large field of view and high throughput and is primarily built for the study of stellar & gaseous kinematics and stellar populations in galaxies. Its aim is to carry out a systematic survey of the velocity fields, velocity dispersions, and line-strength distributions of nearby ellipticals, lenticular galaxies and spiral bulges. Its wide field is especially useful for the study of complicated velocity structures. Together with other spectroscopic data, images, and dynamical modelling, SAURON will help to constrain the intrinsic shapes, mass-to-light ratios, and stellar populations of early-type galaxies and spiral bulges.

A SAURON study of M32: measuring the intrinsic flattening and the central black hole mass

We present dynamical models of the nearby compact elliptical galaxy M32, using high quality kinematical measurements, obtained with the integral-field spectrograph SAURON mounted on the William Herschel Telescope on La Palma. We also include STIS data obtained by Joseph et al. We find a best-fit black hole mass of (2.5 +/- 0.5) million solar masses and a stellar I-band mass-to-light ratio of (1.85 +/- 0.15) in solar units. For the first time, we are also able to constrain the inclination along which M32 is observed to (70 +/- 5) degrees. Combined with an averaged observed flattening of 0.73, this corresponds to an intrinsic flattening of approximately 0.68 +/- 0.03. These tight constraints are mainly caused by the use of integral-field data. We show this quantitatively by comparing with models that are constrained by multiple slits only. We show the phase-space distribution and intrinsic velocity structure of the best-fit model and investigate the effect of regularisation on the orbit distribution.

SAURON Observations of Disks in Spheroids

The panoramic integral-field spectrograph SAURON is currently being used to map the stellar kinematics, gaseous kinematics, and stellar populations of a large number of early-type galaxies and bulges. Here, we describe SAURON observations of cold stellar disks embedded in spheroids (NGC3384, NGC4459, NGC4526), we illustrate the kinematics and ionization state of large-scale gaseous disks (NGC4278, NGC7742), and we show preliminary comparisons of SAURON data with barred galaxy N-body simulations (NGC3623).

The Fundamental Properties of Early-type Galaxies in the Coma Cluster

We report the results of a high quality spectral study of early-type galaxies within the Coma Cluster core. Stellar population analysis using Lick/IDS indices to break the age/metallicity degeneracy are presented, probing their formation history and properties. A clear metallicity trend and a dominant single age population are found.

The SAURON project. II. Sample and early results

Early results are reported from the SAURON survey of the kinematics and stellar populations of a representative sample of nearby E, S0 and Sa galaxies. The survey is aimed at determining the intrinsic shape of the galaxies, their orbital structure, the mass-to-light ratio as a function of radius, the age and metallicity of the stellar populations, and the frequency of kinematically decoupled cores and nuclear black holes. The construction of the representative sample is described, and its properties are illustrated. A comparison with long-slit spectroscopic data establishes that the SAURON measurements are comparable to, or better than, the highest-quality determinations. Comparisons are presented for NGC 3384 and NGC 4365 where stellar velocities and velocity dispersions are determined to a precision of 6 km/s, and the h3 and h4 parameters of the line-of-sight velocity distribution to a precision of better than 0.02. Extraction of accurate gas emission-line intensities, velocities and line widths from the datacubes is illustrated for NGC 5813. Comparisons with published line-strengths for NGC 3384 and NGC 5813 reveal uncertainties of < 0.1 A on the measurements of the Hbeta, Mgb and Fe5270 indices. Integral-field mapping uniquely connects measurements of the kinematics and stellar populations to the galaxy morphology. The maps presented here illustrate the rich stellar kinematics, gaseous kinematics, and line-strength distributions of early-type galaxies. The results include the discovery of a thin, edge-on, disk in NGC 3623, confirm the axisymmetric shape of the central region of M32, illustrate the LINER nucleus and surrounding counter-rotating star-forming ring in NGC 7742, and suggest a uniform stellar population in the decoupled core galaxy NGC 5813.

MIFS: A Mega Integral Field Spectrograph for the VLT

We describe MIFS, a second generation integral-field spectrograph for the VLT, operating in the visible wavelength range. It combines a 1'x1' field of view with the improved spatial resolution provided by multi-conjugate adaptive optics and covers a large simultaneous spectral range (0.6-1.0 microns). A separate mode exploits the highest spatial resolution provided by adaptive optics. With this unique combination of capabilities, MIFS has a wide domain of application and a large discovery potential. The MIFS low-spatial resolution mode (sampled at 0.2") combined with the initial MCAO capabilities planned for the VLT will provide ultra-deep fields with a limiting magnitude for spectroscopy of R~28. MIFS will improve the present day detection limit of Lyman alpha emitters by a factor of 100, and will detect low-mass star-forming galaxies to z~7. The MIFS high-spatial resolution mode (3"x3" field sampled at 0.01") is optimized for the next step in (MC)AO. It will probe, e.g., the relationship between supermassive central black holes and their host galaxy and the physics of winds from accretion disks in young stellar objects at unprecedented spatial resolution. MIFS will extend Europe's lead in integral-field spectroscopy. It capitalizes on new developments in adaptive optics, and is a key step towards instrumentation for OWL.

The early-type galaxy population in Abell 2218

(Abridged) We present morphological, photometric, kinematic and line-strength data of 48 early-type members of the rich cluster Abell 2218 at z=0.18. This sample is both larger and spans a wider galaxy luminosity range, down to M*_B+1, than previous studies. We compare A2218 with similar samples drawn from local clusters to identify evolutionary changes between the samples which have occured over the last 3Gyrs. The overall picture is one of little or no evolution in nearly all galaxy parameters. Zeropoint offsets in the Faber--Jackson, Mg_b-sigma and Fundamental Plane relations are all consistent with passively evolving stellar populations. The slopes of these relations have not changed significantly. We do however find a significant spread in the estimated luminosity-weighted ages of the stellar populations in the galaxies, based on line diagnostic diagrams. This age spread is seen in both the disky early-type galaxies (S0) and also the ellipticals. We observe both ellipticals with a strong contribution from a young stellar population and lenticulars dominated by old stellar populations. On average, we find no evidence for systematic differences between the populations of ellipticals and lenticulars. This points to a common formation epoch for the bulk of the stars in most of the early-type galaxies in A2218. This result can be reconciled with the claims of rapid morphological evolution in distant clusters if the suggested transformation from spirals to lenticulars does not involve significant new star formation.
