Interface effects in ferroelectric PbTiO$_3$ ultrathin films on a paraelectric substrate

Interface effects on the ferroelectric behavior of PbTiO$_3$ ultrathin films deposited on SrTiO$_3$ substrate are investigated using an interatomic potential approach with parameters fitted to first-principles calculations. We find that the correlation of atomic displacements across the film/substrate interface is crucial for the stabilization of the ferroelectric state in films a few unit-cells thick. We show that the minimum film thickness for the appearance of a spontaneous polarized domain state is not an intrinsic property of the ferroelectric film but depends on the polarizability of the paraelectric substrate. We also observe that the substrate displays an induced polarization with an unusual oscillatory behavior.

Surface reconstruction and ferroelectricity in PbTiO$_3$ thin films

Surface and ferroelectric properties of PbTiO$_3$ thin films are investigated using an interatomic potential approach with parameters computed from first-principles calculations. We show that a model developed for the bulk describes properly the surface properties of PbTiO$_3$. In particular, the antiferrodistortive surface reconstruction, recently observed from X-ray scattering, is correctly reproduced as a result of the change in the balance of long-range Coulombic and short-range interactions at the surface. The effects of the surface reconstruction on the ferroelectric properties of ultrathin films are investigated. Under the imposed open-circuit electrical boundary conditions, the model gives a critical thickness for ferroelectricity of 4 unit cells. The surface layer, which forms the antiferrodistortive reconstruction, participates in the ferroelectricity. A decrease in the tetragonality of the films leads to the stabilization of a phase with non-vanishing in-plane polarization. A peculiar effect of the surface reconstruction on the in-plane polarization profile is found.

Ferroelectricity and isotope effects in hydrogen-bonded KDP crystals

Based on an accurate first principles description of the energetics in H-bonded KDP, we conduct a first study of nuclear quantum effects and of the changes brought about by deuteration. Cluster tunneling involving also heavy ions is allowed, the main effect of deuteration being a depletion of the proton probability density at the O-H-O bridge center, which in turn weakens its proton-mediated covalent bonding. The ensuing lattice expansion couples selfconsistently with the proton off-centering, thus explaining both the giant isotope effect, and its close connection with geometrical effects.

Interplay between proton ordering and ferroelectric polarization in H-bonded KDP-type crystals

The origin of ferroelectricity in KH_2PO_4 (KDP) is studied by first-principles electronic structure calculations. In the low-temperature phase, the collective off-center ordering of the protons is accompanied by an electronic charge delocalization from the "near" and localization at the "far" oxygen within the O-H...O bonds. Electrostatic forces, then, push the K+ ions towards off-center positions, and induce a macroscopic polarization. The analysis of the correlation between different geometrical and electronic quantities, in connection with experimental data, supports the idea that the role of tunnelling in isotopic effects is irrelevant. Instead, geometrical quantum effects appear to play a central role.

LAPW frozen-phonon calculation, shell model lattice dynamics and specific-heat measurement of SnO

An ab-initio Linear Augmented Plane-Wave (LAPW) calculation of the zone-centered phonon frequencies of SnO has been performed. E$_g$ symmetry has been ascribed to the mode observed at 113 cm$^{-1}$ in Raman measurements, discarding a previous B$_{1g}$ assignement. The other phonon modes measured by Raman spectroscopy are also well reproduced. A new shell-model has also been developed, that gives good agreement of the zone-centered frequencies compared to the measured data and the LAPW results. Specific heat measurements have been performed between 5 K and 110 K. Computation of the specific heat and the Mössbauer recoilless fraction with the improved shell-model shows a good agreement with the experimental data as a function of temperature.

Dynamic mechanisms of the structural phase transitions in KNbO 3: Molecular dynamics simulations

The question on the dominant driving mechanism (displacive or order-disorder) at each structural phase transition of KNbO3 is investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulations. To this purpose, we first develop a shell model by determining its potential parameters in order to reproduce the ferroelectric instabilities obtained by first-principles total energy calculations. The phase diagram as a function of temperature is obtained through constant-pressure molecular dynamics simulations. The analysis of the dynamical structure factor and the microscopic dynamics of the particles in the different phases allows us to reveal the nature of the dynamics associated with each structural transition. Correlations between local polarizations forming chain-like precursor clusters in the paraelectric phase are examined.
