Chiral phonons driven by chiral cavities

Lattice vibrations carrying angular momentum give rise to fundamental phenomena such as the phonon Hall effect and the Einstein-de Haas effect, offering new opportunities for manipulating angular momentum in condensed-matter systems. Generating such circularly polarized phonons requires either the use of an external magnetic field, or of polarized light pulses. The latter approach does not require the use of any magnetic response of the material, but it has limitations, in particular regarding the duration of the pulse. Consequently, any effect stemming from phonons generated by light pulses is transient. In this paper, we propose the use of a driven electromagnetic cavity as a route to generate a steady-state population of chiral phonons. We derive a general description of cavity-chiral phonon interaction, with a particular focus on modes of chiral cavities. We show that, under optimized conditions, a significant effective phonon-induced magnetic field can be generated by means of an external drive with realistic power. Our approach is specially tailored for Gamma point phonons with THz frequencies, and opens a new route for investigating chiral phonons with electromagnetic cavities.

Dynamic electron-phonon and spin-phonon interactions due to inertia

THz radiation allows for the controlled excitation of vibrational modes in molecules and crystals. We show that the circular motion of ions introduces inertial effects on electrons. In analogy to the classical Coriolis and centrifugal forces, these effects are the spin-rotation coupling, the centrifugal field coupling, the centrifugal spin-orbit coupling, and the centrifugal redshift. Depending on the phonon decay, these effects persist for various picoseconds after excitation. Potential boosting of the effects would make it a promising platform for vibration-based control of localized quantum states or chemical reaction barriers.

Multi hole bands and quasi 2-dimensionality in Cr2Ge2Te6 studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

In the present work, we investigate the electronic structure of the two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnet Cr2Ge2Te6 by photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. Our results demonstrate the presence of multiple hole-type bands in the vicinity of the Fermi level indicating that the material can support high electrical conductivity by manipulating the chemical potential. Also, our photon energy dependent angle resolved photoemission experiment revealed that several of the hole bands exhibit weak dispersion with varied incident photon energy providing experimental signature for its two dimensionality. These findings can pave the way for further studies towards the application of Cr2Ge2Te6 in electronic devices.

GTPack: A Mathematica group theory package for application in solid-state physics and photonics

We present the Mathematica group theory package GTPack providing about 200 additional modules to the standard Mathematica language. The content ranges from basic group theory and representation theory to more applied methods like crystal field theory, tight-binding and plane-wave approaches capable for symmetry based studies in the fields of solid-state physics and photonics. GTPack is freely available via http://GTPack.org. The package is designed to be easily accessible by providing a complete Mathematica-style documentation, an optional input validation and an error strategy. We illustrate the basic framework of the package and show basic examples to present the functionality. Furthermore, we give a complete list of the implemented commands including references for algorithms within the supplementary material.
