Magnetic excitations in stripe-ordered La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ studied using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

The charge and spin correlations in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ (LBCO 1/8) are studied using Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The static charge order (CO) is observed at a wavevector of $(0.24,0)$ and its charge nature confirmed by measuring the dependence of this peak on the incident x-ray polarization. The paramagnon excitation in LBCO 1/8 is then measured as it disperses through the CO wavevector. Within the experimental uncertainty no changes are observed in the paramagnon due to the static CO, and the paramagnon seems to be similar to that measured in other cuprates, which have no static CO. Given that the stripe correlation modulates both the charge and spin degrees of freedom, it is likely that subtle changes do occur in the paramagnon due to CO. Consequently, we propose that future RIXS measurements, realized with higher energy resolution and sensitivity, should be performed to test for these effects.

High-energy magnetic excitations in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$: Towards a unified description of the electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom in the cuprates

We investigate the high-energy magnetic excitation spectrum of the high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212) using Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Broad, dispersive magnetic excitations are observed, with a zone boundary energy of $\sim$300 meV and a weak dependence on doping. These excitations are strikingly similar to the bosons proposed to explain the high-energy `kink' observed in photoemission. A calculation of the spin-response based on the ARPES-derived electronic structure and YRZ-quasi-particles reproduces the key features of the observed magnetic dispersions with no adjustable parameters. These results show that it is possible to reconcile the magnetic and electronic properties of the cuprates within a unified framework.

Uniaxial linear resistivity of superconducting La(1.905)Ba(0.095)CuO(4) induced by an external magnetic field

We present an experimental study of the anisotropic resistivity of superconducting La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) with x=0.095 and transition temperature Tc=32 K. In a magnetic field perpendicular to the CuO(2) layers, H(perp), we observe that the resistivity perpendicular to the layers, ρ(perp), becomes finite at a temperature consistent with previous studies on very similar materials; however, the onset of finite parallel resistivity, ρ(par), occurs at a much higher temperature. This behavior contradicts conventional theory, which predicts that ρ(perp) and ρ(par) should become finite at the same temperature. Voltage vs. current measurements near the threshold of voltage detectability indicate linear behavior perpendicular to the layers, becoming nonlinear at higher currents, while the behavior is nonlinear from the onset parallel to the layers. These results, in the presence of moderate H(perp), appear consistent with superconducting order parallel to the layers with voltage fluctuations between the layers due to thermal noise. In search of uncommon effects that might help to explain this behavior, we have performed diffraction measurements that provide evidence for H(perp)-induced charge and spin stripe order. The field-induced decoupling of superconducting layers is similar to the decoupled phase observed previously in La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) with x=1/8 in zero field.

Magnetic Response in the Underdoped Cuprates

We examine the dynamical magnetic response of the underdoped cuprates by employing a phenomenological theory of a doped resonant valence bond state where the Fermi surface is truncated into four pockets. This theory predicts a resonant spin response which with increasing energy (0 to 100meV) appears as an hourglass. The very low energy spin response is found at (pi,pi +- delta) and (pi +- delta,pi) and is determined by scattering from the pockets' frontside to the tips of opposite pockets where a van Hove singularity resides. At energies beyond 100 meV, strong scattering is seen from (pi,0) to (pi,pi). This theory thus provides a semi-quantitative description of the spin response seen in both INS and RIXS experiments at all relevant energy scales.

The RKKY Interaction and the Nature of the Ground State of Double Dots in Parallel

We argue through a combination of slave boson mean field theory and the Bethe ansatz that the ground state of closely spaced double quantum dots in parallel coupled to a single effective channel are Fermi liquids. We do so by studying the dots' conductance, impurity entropy, and spin correlation. In particularly we find that the zero temperature conductance is characterized by the Friedel sum rule, a hallmark of Fermi liquid physics, and that the impurity entropy vanishes in the limit of zero temperature, indicating the ground state is a singlet. This conclusion is in opposition to a number of numerical renormalization group studies. We suggest a possible reason for the discrepancy.

Energy Level Distribution of Perturbed Conformal Field Theories

We study the energy level spacing of perturbed conformal minimal models in finite volume, considering perturbations of such models that are massive but not necessarily integrable. We compute their spectrum using a renormalization group improved truncated conformal spectrum approach. With this method we are able to study systems where more than 40000 states are kept and where we determine the energies of the lowest several thousand eigenstates with high accuracy. We find, as expected, that the level spacing statistics of integrable perturbed minimal models are Poissonian while the statistics of non-integrable perturbations are GOE-like. However by varying the system size (and so controlling the positioning of the theory between its IR and UV limits) one can induce crossovers between the two statistical distributions.

Superconductivity generated by coupling to a Cooperon in a 2-dimensional array of 4-leg Hubbard ladders

Starting from an array of four-leg Hubbard ladders weakly doped away from half-filling and weakly coupled by inter-ladder tunneling, we derive an effective low energy model which contains a partially truncated Fermi surface and a well defined Cooperon excitation formed by a bound pair of holes. An attractive interaction in the Cooper channel is generated on the Fermi surface through virtual scattering into the Cooperon state. Although the model is derived in the weak coupling limit of a four-leg ladder array, an examination of exact results on finite clusters for the strong coupling t-J model suggests the essential features are also present for a strong coupling Hubbard model on a square lattice near half-filling.

Finite Temperature Dynamical Correlations in Massive Integrable Quantum Field Theories

We consider the finite-temperature frequency and momentum dependent two-point functions of local operators in integrable quantum field theories. We focus on the case where the zero temperature correlation function is dominated by a delta-function line arising from the coherent propagation of single particle modes. Our specific examples are the two-point function of spin fields in the disordered phase of the quantum Ising and the O(3) nonlinear sigma models. We employ a Lehmann representation in terms of the known exact zero-temperature form factors to carry out a low-temperature expansion of two-point functions. We present two different but equivalent methods of regularizing the divergences present in the Lehmann expansion: one directly regulates the integral expressions of the squares of matrix elements in the infinite volume whereas the other operates through subtracting divergences in a large, finite volume. Our central results are that the temperature broadening of the line shape exhibits a pronounced asymmetry and a shift of the maximum upwards in energy ("temperature dependent gap"). The field theory results presented here describe the scaling limits of the dynamical structure factor in the quantum Ising and integer spin Heisenberg chains. We discuss the relevance of our results for the analysis of inelastic neutron scattering experiments on gapped spin chain systems such as CsNiCl3 and YBaNiO5.

Finite Temperature Dynamical Structure Factor of Alternating Heisenberg Chains

We develop a low-temperature expansion for the finite temperature dynamical structure factor of the spin half Heisenberg chain with alternating nearest neighbour exchange in the limit of strong alternation of the exchange constants. We determine both the broadening of the low lying triplet lines and the contribution of the thermally activated intraband scattering.

Modelling Magnetic Fluctuations in the Stripe Ordered State

The nature of the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism in the cuprates remains one of the fundamental unsolved problems in high temperature superconductivity. Whether and how these two phenomena are interdependent is perhaps most sharply seen in the stripe phases of various copper-oxide materials. These phases, involving a mixture of spin and charge density waves, do not yet admit a complete, overarching theoretical treatment. However aspects of this problem can be analyzed. In this work, we focus on the magnetic side of stripe physics. To this end, we study a simple model of a stripe-ordered phase consisting of an array of alternating coupled doped and undoped two-leg Hubbard-like ladders. To obtain the magnetic response, we employ already available dynamical susceptibilities of the individual two-leg ladders and treat the interladder coupling in a random phase approximation. Strikingly, we find two possible scenarios for the ordered state induced by the coupling between ladders: the spin modulation can occur either along or perpendicular to the direction of the stripes. These two scenarios are differentiated according to different microscopic realizations of the component doped ladders. However inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the two stripe ordered cuprates, La_{1.875}Ba_{0.125}CuO_4 and La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4, do not readily distinguish between these two scenarios due to manner in which stripes form in these materials.

Counting statistics for the Anderson impurity model: Bethe ansatz and Fermi liquid study

We study the counting statistics of charge transport in the Anderson impurity model (AIM) employing both Keldysh perturbation theory in a Fermi liquid picture and the Bethe ansatz. In the Fermi liquid approach, the object of our principal interest is the generating function for the cumulants of the charge current distribution. We derive an exact analytic formula relating the full counting statistic (FCS) generating function to the self-energy of the system in the presence of a measuring field. We first check that our approach reproduces correctly known results in simple limits, like the FCS of the resonant level system (AIM without Coulomb interaction). We then proceed to study the FCS for the AIM perturbatively in the Coulomb interaction. By comparing this perturbative analysis with a strong coupling expansion, we arrive at a conjecture for an expression for the FCS generating function at O(V^3) (V is the voltage across the impurity) valid at all orders in the interaction. In the second part of the article, we examine a Bethe ansatz analysis of the current noise for the AIM. Unlike the Fermi liquid approach, here the goal is to obtain qualitative, not quantitative, results for a wider range of voltages both in and out of a magnetic field. Particularly notable are finite field results showing a double peaked structure in the current noise for voltages satisfying eV ~ mu H$. This double peaked structure is the ``smoking gun'' of Kondo physics in the current noise and is directly analogous to the single peak structure predicted for the differential conductance of the AIM.

Kondo Physics and Exact Solvability of Double Dots Systems

We study two double dot systems, one with dots in parallel and one with dots in series, and argue they admit an exact solution via the Bethe ansatz. In the case of parallel dots we exploit the exact solution to extract the behavior of the linear response conductance. The linear response conductance of the parallel dot system possesses multiple Kondo effects, including a Kondo effect enhanced by a nonpertubative antiferromagnetic RKKY interaction, has conductance zeros in the mixed valence regime, and obeys a non-trivial form of the Friedel sum rule.

Orbital Dependence of Quasiparticle Lifetimes in Sr2RuO4

Using a phenomenological Hamiltonian, we investigate the quasiparticle lifetimes and dispersions in the three low energy bands, gamma, beta, and alpha of Sr2RuO4. Couplings in the Hamiltonian are fixed so as to produce the mass renormalization as measured in magneto-oscillation experiments. We thus find reasonable agreement in all bands between our computed lifetimes and those measured in ARPES experiments by Kidd et al. [1] and Ingle et al. [2]. In comparing computed to measured quasiparticle dispersions, we however find good agreement in the alpha-band alone.

Low temperature correlation functions in integrable models: Derivation of the large distance and time asymptotics from the form factor expansion

We propose an approach to the problem of low but finite temperature dynamical correlation functions in integrable one-dimensional models with a spectral gap. The approach is based on the analysis of the leading singularities of the operator matrix elements and is not model specific. We discuss only models with well defined asymptotic states. For such models the long time, large distance asymptotics of the correlation functions fall into two universality classes. These classes differ primarily by whether the behavior of the two-particle S matrix at low momenta is diagonal or corresponds to pure reflection. We discuss similarities and differences between our results and results obtained by the semi-classical method suggested by Sachdev and Young, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 78}, 2220 (1997).

Doped Spin Liquid: Luttinger Sum Rule and Low Temperature Order

We analyze a model of two-leg Hubbard ladders weakly coupled by interladder tunneling. At half filling a semimetallic state with small Fermi pockets is induced beyond a threshold tunneling strength. The sign changes in the single electron Green's function relevant for the Luttinger Sum Rule now take place at surfaces with both zeroes and infinities with important consequences for the interpretation of ARPES experiments. Residual interactions between electron and hole-like quasi-particles cause a transition to long range order at low temperatures. The theory can be extended to small doping leading to superconducting order.

Fano Lineshapes Revisited: Symmetric Photoionization Peaks from Pure Continuum Excitation

In a photoionization spectrum in which there is no excitation of the discrete states, but only the underlying continuum, we have observed resonances which appear as symmetric peaks, not the commonly expected window resonances. Furthermore, since the excitation to the unperturbed continuum vanishes, the cross section expected from Fano's configuration interaction theory is identically zero. This shortcoming is removed by the explicit introduction of the phase shifted continuum, which demonstrates that the shape of a resonance, by itself, provides no information about the relative excitation amplitudes to the discrete state and the continuum.
