Perturbative Wilson loops from unquenched Monte Carlo simulations at weak couplings

Perturbative expansions of several small Wilson loops are computed through next-to-next-to-leading order in unquenched lattice QCD, from Monte Carlo simulations at weak couplings. This approach provides a much simpler alternative to conventional diagrammatic perturbation theory, and is applied here for the first time to full QCD. Two different sets of lattice actions are considered: one set uses the unimproved plaquette gluon action together with the unimproved staggered-quark action; the other set uses the one-loop-improved Symanzik gauge-field action together with the so-called ``asqtad'' improved-staggered quark action. Simulations are also done with different numbers of dynamical fermions. An extensive study of the systematic uncertainties is presented, which demonstrates that the small third-order perturbative component of the observables can be reliably extracted from simulation data. We also investigate the use of the rational hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm for unquenched simulations with unimproved-staggered fermions. Our results are in excellent agreement with diagrammatic perturbation theory, and provide an important cross-check of the perturbation theory input to a recent determination of the strong coupling $α_{\bar{\rm MS}}(M_Z)$ by the HPQCD collaboration.

Maximal twist and the spectrum of quenched twisted mass lattice QCD

Results on the hadron masses for a degenerate doublet of up and down quarks from quenched twisted mass lattice QCD at maximal twist are presented. Two definitions of maximal twist are used and the hadron masses for these definitions are compared. Mass splittings within the Delta(1232) multiplet due to flavor breaking effects are discussed.

The hadron spectrum from twisted mass QCD with a strange quark

Various suggestions exist for incorporating the strange quark into twisted mass QCD. One option for quenched simulations is to employ two twisted doublets, (u,d) and (c,s), with separate twist angles. Working in the isospin limit, preliminary results for the quenched spectrum of strange hadrons are presented, with both twist angles tuned to pi/2. Splittings within the mass multiplets provide some insight into the symmetry breaking effects of twisted mass lattice QCD.

Systematics of Staggered Fermion Spectral Properties and Topology

The spectral properties of a variety of improved staggered operators are studied in quenched QCD. The systematic dependence of the infrared eigenvalue spectrum on i) improvement in the staggered operator, ii) improvement in the gauge field action, iii) lattice spacing and iv) lattice volume, is analyzed. It is observed that eigenmodes with small eigenvalues and large chirality appear as the level of improvement increases or as one approaches the continuum limit. These eigenmodes can be identified as the ``zero modes'' which contribute to the chirality associated, via the index theorem, with the topology of the background gauge field. This gives evidence that staggered fermions are sensitive to gauge field topology. After successfully identifying these would-be chiral zero modes, the distribution of the remaining non-chiral modes is compared with the predictions of Random Matrix Theory in different topological sectors. Satisfactory agreement is obtained.

Spectrum of quenched twisted mass lattice QCD at maximal twist

Hadron masses are computed from quenched twisted mass lattice QCD for a degenerate doublet of up and down quarks with the twist angle set to pi/2, since this maximally twisted theory is expected to be free of linear discretization errors. Two separate definitions of the twist angle are used, and the hadron masses for these two cases are compared. The flavor breaking, that can arise due to twisting, is discussed in the context of mass splittings within the Delta(1232) multiplet.

Topology and Staggered Fermion Action Improvement

It is conventional wisdom that staggered fermions do not feel gauge field topology. However, the response of staggered fermion eigenmodes to the topology of the gauge field can depend quite sensitively on the way in which the staggered fermion action is improved. We study this issue using a variety of improved staggered quark actions. We observe that the separation between the ``would be'' zero modes and the non-chiral modes increases with the level of improvement. This enables the ``zero modes'' to be identified unambiguously. The distribution of the remaining non-chiral modes is compared with the predictions of Random Matrix Theory. Satisfactory agreement is obtained.

An alternate smearing method for Wilson loops in lattice QCD

A gauge field link smearing method developed for calculations with staggered fermions, namely the use of unitarized fat7 links, is applied to mesonic and baryonic Wilson loop calculations. This method is found to be very effective for reducing statistical fluctuations for large Wilson loops. Examination of chromo-electric field distributions shows that self-interactions of the static sources are reduced when unitarized fat7 smearing is used but long-distance inter-quark effects are unchanged.

A study of colour field distributions in the baryon

The distributions of chromo-electric and chromo-magnetic field associated with flux tubes in the baryon are studied in SU(3) lattice QCD. Maximal Abelian projection is used to reduce the statistical fluctuations. For a fixed source geometry, many different string configurations are possible. We investigated whether the string configuration, that is the choice of operator, biases the observed flux distribution.

The nucleon's strange electromagnetic and scalar matrix elements

Quenched lattice QCD simulations and quenched chiral perturbation theory are used together for this study of strangeness in the nucleon. Dependences of the matrix elements on strange quark mass, valence quark mass and momentum transfer are discussed in both the lattice and chiral frameworks. The combined results of this study are in good agreement with existing experimental data and predictions are made for upcoming experiments. Possible future refinements of the theoretical method are suggested.

Strange matrix elements of the nucleon

Results for the disconnected contributions to matrix elements of the vector current and scalar density have been obtained for the nucleon from the Wilson action at beta=6 using a stochastic estimator technique and 2000 quenched configurations. Various methods for analysis are employed and chiral extrapolations are discussed.

Charmed and Bottom Baryons from Lattice NRQCD

The mass spectrum of charmed and bottom baryons has been computed on anisotropic lattices using quenched lattice nonrelativistic QCD. Masses are extracted by using mass splittings which are more accurate than masses obtained directly by using the nonrelativistic mass-energy relation. Of particular interest are the mass splittings between spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 heavy baryons, and we find that these color hyperfine effects are not suppressed in the baryon sector although they are known to be suppressed in the meson sector. Results are compared with those obtained in a previous NRQCD calculation and with those obtained from a Dirac-Wilson action of the D234 type.

Strange-quark Current in the Nucleon from Lattice QCD

The contribution of the strange-quark current to the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon is studied using lattice QCD. The strange current matrix elements from our lattice calculation are analyzed in two different ways, the differential method used in an earlier work by Wilcox and a cumulative method which sums over all current insertion times. The preliminary results of our simulation indicate the importance of high statistics, and that consistent results between the varying analysis methods can be achieved. Although this simulation does not yet yield a number that can be compared to experiment, several criteria useful in assessing the robustness of a signal extracted from a noisy background are presented.

Heavy Baryons from Lattice NRQCD

The mass spectrum of heavy quark baryons has been computed on anisotropic lattices using quenched lattice nonrelativistic QCD. The mass splittings between spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 baryons are also calculated. Results are compared to those obtained by using a Dirac-Wilson action of the D234 type. Color hyperfine effects in heavy baryons are also discussed.

Spin splittings among charmed hadrons

The mass differences between spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 baryons are compared to the mass differences between spin-0 and spin-1 mesons. Results of simulations for charmed hadrons in the quenched approximation from a tadpole-improved anisotropic action are discussed in the context of other lattice calculations, quark model predictions, heavy quark symmetry predictions and experimental data.

Charmed baryons in lattice QCD

Masses of singly and doubly charmed baryons are calculated in quenched lattice QCD using an improved action of the D234 type on an anisotropic lattice. The mass differences between spin 3/2 and spin 1/2 baryon states are calculated and compared to mass differences between vector and pseudoscalar mesons. The suppression of spin splittings in mesons containing heavy quarks, characteristic of quenched QCD simulations, is not observed in the baryon sector. The mass dependence of color hyperfine effects is discussed within the context of the quark model and heavy quark effective theory.

The charmed and bottom meson spectrum from lattice NRQCD

The mass spectrum of S and P-wave mesons containing a single heavy quark has been computed using quenched lattice nonrelativistic QCD. Numerical results have been obtained at first, second and third order in the heavy quark expansion, so convergence can be discussed. The computed spectrum of charmed and bottom mesons is compared to existing model calculations and experimental data.

Heavy-light meson spectrum with and without NRQCD

Results for the spectrum of S and P-wave charmed mesons are obtained in the quenched approximation from a tadpole-improved anisotropic gauge field action and a D234 quark action. This is compared to the spectrum obtained from an NRQCD charm quark and a D234 light antiquark. NRQCD results for bottom mesons are also discussed.

S and P-wave heavy-light mesons in lattice NRQCD

The mass spectrum of S and P-wave mesons containing a single heavy quark is computed in the quenched approximation, using NRQCD up to third order in the inverse heavy quark mass expansion. Previous results found third order contributions which are as large in magnitude as the total second order contribution for the charmed S-wave spin splitting. The present work considers variations such as anisotropic lattices, Landau link tadpole improvement, and a highly-improved light quark action, and finds that the second order correction to the charmed S-wave spin splitting is about 20% of the leading order contribution, while the third order correction is about 20%(10%) for D^*-D(D_s^*-D_s). Nonleading corrections are very small for the bottom meson spectrum, and are statistically insignificant for the P-wave charmed masses. The relative orderings among P-wave charmed and bottom mesons, and the sizes of the mass splittings, are discussed in light of experimental data and existing calculations.
