Cosmic Shear and Clusters of Galaxies

The first detections of cosmic shear signal reported recently by 4 independent groups cover angular scales between one and 10 arcmin. On those scales, the cosmic shear is a signature of non-linear perturbations, like groups and clusters of galaxies. We present the results obtained by our team on CFHT and on the VLT and discuss its impact for the analysis of cluster abundances and cosmology

Cosmic Shear with the CFHT

We present results of our cosmic shear survey in progress at the Canada- France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). We analysed 1.7 sq. degrees of data, out of which we measured a significant correlation of galaxy shape-orientation over several arcmin scale. We present measurements of the variance of the shear $<γ^2>$ and of the correlation functions $ $, $ $. The signal is consistent with gravitational lensing by large scale structures predictions. The level of residual systematics after PSF correction is small compared to our measured signal. We outline several evolutions of our work by using additional data covering 9 sq. degrees.

Cosmic Shear with the VLT

We report on the detection of cosmic shear on angular scales of 1.3-6.5 arcmin using 45 independent empty fields observed with the Very Large Telescope (VLT). This result confirms previous measurements obtained with the CFH Telescope at the same angular scales. We present the data analysis and the first preliminary results.

Detection of correlated galaxy ellipticities on CFHT data: first evidence for gravitational lensing by large-scale structures

We report the detection of a significant (5.5 sigma) excess of correlations between galaxy ellipticities at scales ranging from 0.5 to 3.5 arc-minutes. This detection of a gravitational lensing signal by large-scale structure was made using a composite high quality imaging survey of 6300 arcmin^2 obtained at the Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) with the UH8K and CFH12K panoramic CCD cameras. The amplitude of the excess correlation is 2.2\pm 0.2 % at 1 arcmin scale, in agreement with theoretical predictions of the lensing effect induced by large-scale structure. We provide a quantitative analysis of systematics which could contribute to the signal and show that the net effect is small and can be corrected for. We show that the measured ellipticity correlations behave as expected for a gravitational shear signal. The relatively small size of our survey precludes tight constraints on cosmological models. However the data are in favor of cluster normalized cosmological models, and marginally reject Cold Dark Matter models with (Omega=0.3, sigma_8<0.6) or (Omega=1, sigma_8=1). The detection of cosmic shear demonstrates the technical feasibility of using weak lensing surveys to measure dark matter clustering and the potential for cosmological parameter measurements, in particular with upcoming wide field CCD cameras.

CO lines in high redshift galaxies: perspective for future mm instruments

Nearly 10 high redshift (z>2) starburst galaxies have recently been detected in the CO lines, revealing the early presence in the universe of objects with large amounts of already-enriched molecular gas. The latter has sufficient density to be excited in the high-level rotational CO lines, which yield more flux, making easier high-redshift detections; however the effect is not as strong as for the sub-millimeter and far-infrared dust continuum emission. With the help of simple galaxy models, based on these first detections, we estimate the flux in all CO lines expected for such starbursting objects at various redshifts. We discuss the detection perspectives with the future millimeter instruments.

Molecular signals from primordial clouds at high redshift

The possibility to detect cosmological signals from the post-recombination Universe is one of the main aims of modern cosmology. In a previous paper we emphasized the role that elastic resonant scattering through LiH molecules can have in dumping primary CBR anisotropies and raising secondary signals. Here we extend our analysis to all the evolutionary stages of a primordial cloud, starting with the linear phase, through the turn-around and to the non linear collapse. We have done calculations for proto-clouds in a CDM scenario and, more generally, for a set of clouds with various masses and various turn-around redshifts, in this case without referring to any particular structure formation scenario. We found that the first phase of collapse, for $t/t_{free-fall}=0.05÷0.2$ is the best one for simultaneous detection of the first two LiH rotational lines. The observational frequency falls between 30 and 250 GHz and the line width ${Δν\over ν}$ is between $10^{-5}$ and $10^{-4}$. As far as we know this is the most favourable process to detect primordial clouds before they start star formation processes.
