Instability of solutions in a degenerate reaction diffusion equation

We study the spectral stability of travelling and stationary front and pulse solutions in a class of degenerate reaction-diffusion systems. We characterise the essential spectrum of the linearised operator in full generality and identify conditions under which it lies entirely in the left-half plane. For a number of special cases we obtain analytical results, including explicit Evans functions, and complete spectral descriptions for certain stationary waves. In regimes where analytical methods are not available, we compute the point spectrum numerically using a Riccati-Evans function approach. Our results show that stable travelling fronts can occur, while travelling pulses are typically unstable.

Stability of asymptotic waves in the Fisher-Stefan equation

We establish spectral, linear, and nonlinear stability of the vanishing and slow-moving travelling waves that arise as time asymptotic solutions to the Fisher-Stefan equation. Nonlinear stability is in terms of the limiting equations that the asymptotic waves satisfy.

Traveling wave solutions in a model for tumor invasion with the acid-mediation hypothesis

In this manuscript, we prove the existence of slow and fast traveling wave solutions in the original Gatenby--Gawlinski model. We prove the existence of a slow traveling wave solution with an interstitial gap. This interstitial gap has previously been observed experimentally, and here we derive its origin from a mathematical perspective. We give a geometric interpretation of the formal asymptotic analysis of the interstitial gap and show that it is determined by the distance between a layer transition of the tumor and a dynamical transcritical bifurcation of two components of the critical manifold. This distance depends, in a nonlinear fashion, on the destructive influence of the acid and the rate at which the acid is being pumped.

Rigorous justification of the Whitham modulation theory for equations of NLS type

We study the modulational stability of periodic travelling wave solutions to equations of nonlinear Schrödinger type. In particular, we prove that the characteristics of the quasi-linear system of equations resulting from a slow modulation approximation satisfy the same equation, up to a change in variables, as the normal form of the linearized spectrum crossing the origin. This normal form is taken from arXiv:1910.05392, where Leisman et al. compute the spectrum of the linearized operator near the origin via an analysis of Jordan chains. We derive the modulation equations using Whitham's formal modulation theory, in particular the variational principle applied to an averaged Lagrangian. We use the genericity conditions assumed in the rigorous theory of Leisman et al. to direct the homogenization of the modulation equations. As a result of the agreement between the equation for the characteristics and the normal form from the linear theory, we show that the hyperbolicity of the Whitham system is a necessary condition for modulational stability of the underlying wave.

(In)Stability of Travelling Waves in a Model of Haptotaxis

We examine the spectral stability of travelling waves of the haptotaxis model studied in Harley et al (2014a). In the process we apply Liénard coordinates to the linearised stability problem and use a Riccati-transform/Grassmanian spectral shooting method á la Harley et al (2015), Ledoux et al (2009) and Ledoux et al (2010) in order to numerically compute the Evans function and point spectrum of a linearised operator associated with a travelling wave. We numerically show the instability of non-monotone waves (type IV) and the stability of the monotone ones (types I-III) to perturbations in an appropriately weighted space.

Spectral Stability of Travelling Wave Solutions in a Keller-Segel Model

We investigate the point spectrum associated with travelling wave solutions in a Keller-Segel model for bacterial chemotaxis with small diffusivity of the chemoattractant, a logarithmic chemosensitivity function and a constant, sublinear or linear consumption rate. We show that, for constant or sublinear consumption, there is an eigenvalue at the origin of order two. This is associated with the translation invariance of the model and the existence of a continuous family of solutions with varying wave speed. These point spectrum results, in conjunction with previous results in the literature, imply that in these cases the travelling wave solutions are absolute unstable if the chemotactic coefficient is above a certain critical value, while they are transiently unstable otherwise.

Absolute instabilities of travelling wave solutions in a Keller-Segel model

We investigate the spectral stability of travelling wave solutions in a Keller-Segel model of bacterial chemotaxis with a logarithmic chemosensitivity function and a constant, sublinear, and linear consumption rate. Linearising around the travelling wave solutions, we locate the essential and absolute spectrum of the associated linear operators and find that all travelling wave solutions have essential spectrum in the right half plane. However, we show that in the case of constant or sublinear consumption there exists a range of parameters such that the absolute spectrum is contained in the open left half plane and the essential spectrum can thus be weighted into the open left half plane. For the constant and sublinear consumption rate models we also determine critical parameter values for which the absolute spectrum crosses into the right half plane, indicating the onset of an absolute instability of the travelling wave solution. We observe that this crossing always occurs off of the real axis.

Numerical computation of an Evans function for travelling waves

We demonstrate a geometrically inspired technique for computing Evans functions for the linearised operators about travelling waves. Using the examples of the F-KPP equation and a Keller-Segel model of bacterial chemotaxis, we produce an Evans function which is computable through several orders of magnitude in the spectral parameter and show how such a function can naturally be extended into the continuous spectrum. In both examples, we use this function to numerically verify the absence of eigenvalues in a large region of the right half of the spectral plane. We also include a new proof of spectral stability in the appropriate weighted space of travelling waves of speed $c \geq 2 \sqrtδ$ in the F-KPP equation.

An instability criterion for nonlinear standing waves on nonzero backgrounds

A nonlinear Schrödinger equation with repulsive (defocusing) nonlinearity is considered. As an example, a system with a spatially varying coefficient of the nonlinear term is studied. The nonlinearity is chosen to be repelling except on a finite interval. Localized standing wave solutions on a non-zero background, e.g., dark solitons trapped by the inhomogeneity, are identified and studied. A novel instability criterion for such states is established through a topological argument. This allows instability to be determined quickly in many cases by considering simple geometric properties of the standing waves as viewed in the composite phase plane. Numerical calculations accompany the analytical results.

Unstable gap solitons in inhomogeneous Schrodinger equations

A periodically inhomogeneous Schrodinger equation is considered. The inhomogeneity is reflected through a non-uniform coefficient of the linear and non-linear term in the equation. Due to the periodic inhomogeneity of the linear term, the system may admit spectral bands. When the oscillation frequency of a localized solution resides in one of the finite band gaps, the solution is a gap soliton, characterized by the presence of infinitely many zeros in the spatial profile of the soliton. Recently, how to construct such gap solitons through a composite phase portrait is shown. By exploiting the phase-space method and combining it with the application of a topological argument, it is shown that the instability of a gap soliton can be described by the phase portrait of the solution. Surface gap solitons at the interface between a periodic inhomogeneous and a homogeneous medium are also discussed. Numerical calculations are presented accompanying the analytical results.

Stability of Travelling Wave Solutions to the Sine-Gordon Equation

We give a geometric proof of spectral stability of travelling kink wave solutions to the sine-Gordon equation. For a travelling kink wave solution of speed $c \neq \pm 1$, the wave is spectrally stable. The proof uses the Maslov index as a means for determining the lack of real eigenvalues. Ricatti equations and further geometric considerations are also used in establishing stability.

Localized standing waves in inhomogeneous Schrodinger equations

A nonlinear Schrodinger equation arising from light propagation down an inhomogeneous medium is considered. The inhomogeneity is reflected through a non-uniform coefficient of the non-linear term in the equation. In particular, a combination of self-focusing and self-defocusing nonlinearity, with the self-defocusing region localized in a finite interval, is investigated. Using numerical computations, the extension of linear eigenmodes of the corresponding linearized system into nonlinear states is established, particularly nonlinear continuations of the fundamental state and the first excited state. The (in)stability of the states is also numerically calculated, from which it is obtained that symmetric nonlinear solutions become unstable beyond a critical threshold norm. Instability of the symmetric states is then investigated analytically through the application of a topological argument. Determination of instability of positive symmetric states is reduced to simple geometric properties of the composite phase plane orbit of the standing wave. Further the topological argument is applied to higher excited states and instability is again reduced to straightforward geometric calculations. For a relatively high norm, it is observed that asymmetric states bifurcate from the symmetric ones. The stability and instability of asymmetric states is also considered.

The general quadruple point formula

Maps between manifolds $M^m\to N^{m+\ell}$ ($\ell>0$) have multiple points, and more generally, multisingularities. The closure of the set of points where the map has a particular multisingularity is called the multisingularity locus. There are universal relations among the cohomology classes represented by multisingularity loci, and the characteristic classes of the manifolds. These relations include the celebrated Thom polynomials of monosingularities. For multisingularities, however, only the form of these relations is clear in general (due to Kazarian), the concrete polynomials occurring in the relations are much less known. In the present paper we prove the first general such relation outside the region of Morin-maps: the general quadruple point formula. We apply this formula in enumerative geometry by computing the number of 4-secant linear spaces to smooth projective varieties. Some other multisingularity formulas are also studied, namely 5, 6, 7 tuple point formulas, and one corresponding to $Σ^2Σ^0$ multisingularities.
