Formation of a quasicrystalline Pb monolayer on the ten-fold surface of the decagonal Al-Ni-Co quasicrystal

Lead has been deposited on the ten-fold surface of decagonal Al72Ni11Co17 to form an epitaxial quasicrystalline single-element monolayer. The overlayer grows through nucleation of nanometer-sized irregular islands and the coverage saturates at 1 ML. The overlayer is well-ordered quasiperiodically as evidenced by LEED and Fourier transforms of STM images. Annealing the film to 600 K improves the structural quality, but causes the evaporation of some material such that the film develops pores. Electronic structure measurements using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy indicate that the chemical interaction of the Pb atoms with the substrate is weak.

Nucleation and growth of a quasicrystalline monolayer: Bi adsorption on the five-fold surface of i-Al70Pd21Mn9

Scanning tunnelling microscopy has been used to study the formation of a Bi monolayer deposited on the five-fold surface of i-Al70Pd21Mn9. Upon deposition of low sub-monolayer coverages, the nucleation of pentagonal clusters of Bi adatoms of edge length 4.9 A is observed. The clusters have a common orientation leading to a film with five-fold symmetry. By inspection of images where both the underlying surface and the Bi atoms are resolved, the pentagonal clusters are found to nucleate on pseudo-Mackay clusters truncated such that a Mn atom lies centrally in the surface plane. The density of these sites is sufficient to form a quasiperiodic framework, and subsequent adsorption of Bi atoms ultimately leads to the formation of a quasicrystalline monolayer. The initial nucleation site is different to that proposed on the basis of recent density functional theory calculations.

Self-assembly, structure and electronic properties of a quasiperiodic lead monolayer

A quasiperiodic Pb monolayer has been formed on the five-fold surface of the Al-Pd-Mn quasicrystal. Growth of the monolayer proceeds via self-assembly of an interconnected network of pentagonal Pb stars, which are shown to be tau-inflated compared to similar structural elements of the quasiperiodic substrate. Measurements of the electronic structure of the system using scanning tunnelling spectroscopy and ultra-violet photoemission spectroscopy reveal that the Pb monolayer displays a pseudo-gap at the Fermi level which is directly related to its quasiperiodic structure.

Near-threshold production of the multi-strange $Ξ^-$ hyperon

The yield for the multi-strange $Ξ^{-}$ hyperon has been measured in 6 AGeV Au+Au collisions via reconstruction of its decay products $π^{-}$ and $Λ$, the latter also being reconstructed from its daughter tracks of $π^{-}$ and p. The measurement is rather close to the threshold for $Ξ^{-}$ production and therefore provides an important test of model predictions. The measured yield for $Ξ^{-}$ and $Λ$ are compared for several centralities. In central collisions the $Ξ^{-}$ yield is found to be in excellent agreement with statistical and transport model predictions, suggesting that multi-strange hadron production approaches chemical equilibrium in high baryon density nuclear matter.

Comparison of Source Images for protons, $π^-$'s and $Λ$'s in 6 AGeV Au+Au collisions

Source images are extracted from two-particle correlations constructed from strange and non-strange hadrons produced in 6 AGeV Au + Au collisions. Very different source images result from pp vs p$Λ$ vs $π^-π^-$ correlations. These observations suggest important differences in the space-time emission histories for protons, pions and neutral strange baryons produced in the same events.

Formation of a quasiperiodic copper thin film

We have synthesised a thin film of copper with a quasi-periodic structure by the adsorption of copper atoms on the five-fold surface of the icosahedral quasicrystal Al-Pd-Mn at room temperature. The quasi-periodicity of the thin film is manifested in low energy electronic diffraction (LEED) measurements and in the existence of Fibonacci relationships between rows of copper atoms imaged using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). These findings demonstrate the feasibility of single-element quasi-periodic thin film formation using quasicrystals as templates.

A maximum density rule for surfaces of quasicrystals

A rule due to Bravais of wide validity for crystals is that their surfaces correspond to the densest planes of atoms in the bulk of the material. Comparing a theoretical model of i-AlPdMn with experimental results, we find that this correspondence breaks down and that surfaces parallel to the densest planes in the bulk are not the most stable, i.e. they are not so-called bulk terminations. The correspondence can be restored by recognizing that there is a contribution to the surface not just from one geometrical plane but from a layer of stacked atoms, possibly containing more than one plane. We find that not only does the stability of high-symmetry surfaces match the density of the corresponding layer-like bulk terminations but the exact spacings between surface terraces and their degree of pittedness may be determined by a simple analysis of the density of layers predicted by the bulk geometric model.

Bulk Termination of the Quasicrystalline Five-Fold Surface of Al_{70}Pd_{21}Mn_{9}

The structure of the Al_{70}Pd_{21}Mn_{9} surface has been investigated using high resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). From two large five-fold terraces on the surface in a short decorated Fibonacci sequence, atomically resolved surface images have been obtained. One of these terraces carries a rare local configuration in a form of a ring. The location of the corresponding sequence of terminations in the bulk model M of icosahedral i-AlPdMn based on the three-dimensional tiling T*(2F) of an F-phase has been estimated using this ring configuration and the requirement from the LEED work of Gierer et al. that the average atomic density of the terminations is 0.136 atoms per A^2. A termination contains two atomic plane layers separated by a vertical distance of 0.48 A. The position of the bulk terminations is fixed within the layers of Bergman polytopes in the model M: they are 4.08 A in the direction of the bulk from a surface of the most dense Bergman layers. From the coding windows of the top planes in terminations in M we conclude that a Penrose (P1) tiling is possible on almost all five-fold terraces. The shortest edge of the tiling P1, is either 4.8 A or 7.8 A. The experimentally derived tiling of the surface with the ring configuration has an edge-length of 8.0 +- 0.3 A and hence matches the minimal edge-length expected from the model.

Longitudinal Flow of Protons from 2-8 AGeV Central Au+Au Collisions

Rapidity distributions of protons from central $^{197}$Au + $^{197}$Au collisions measured by the E895 Collaboration in the energy range from 2 to 8 AGeV at the Brookhaven AGS are presented. Longitudinal flow parameters derived using a thermal model including collective longitudinal expansion are extracted from these distributions. The results show an approximately linear increase in the longitudinal flow velocity, $<βγ>_{L}$, as a function of the logarithm of beam energy.

Tiling of the five-fold surface of Al(70)Pd(21)Mn(9)

The nature of the five-fold surface of Al(70)Pd(21)Mn(9) has been investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy. From high resolution images of the terraces, a tiling of the surface has been constructed using pentagonal prototiles. This tiling matches the bulk model of Boudard et. al. (J. Phys.: Cond. Matter 4, 10149, (1992)), which allows us to elucidate the atomic nature of the surface. Furthermore, it is consistent with a Penrose tiling T^*((P1)r) obtained from the geometric model based on the three-dimensional tiling T^*(2F). The results provide direct confirmation that the five-fold surface of i-Al-Pd-Mn is a termination of the bulk structure.

Laying the groundwork at the AGS: Recent results from experiment E895

The E895 Collaboration at the Brookhaven AGS has performed a systematic investigation of Au+Au collisions at 2-8 AGeV, using a large-acceptance Time Projection Chamber. In addition to extensive measurements of particle flow, spectra, two-particle interferometry, and strangeness production, we have performed novel hybrid analyses, including azimuthally-sensitive pion HBT, extraction of the six-dimensional pion phasespace density, and a first measurement of the Lambda-proton correlation function.

Anti-flow of K$^0_s$ Mesons in 6 AGeV Au + Au Collisions

We have measured the sideward flow of neutral strange ($K^0_s$) mesons in 6 AGeV Au + Au collisions. A prominent anti-flow signal is observed for an impact parameter range (b $\lesssim 7$ fm) which spans central and mid-central events. Since the $K^0_s$ scattering cross section is relatively small in nuclear matter, this observation suggests that the in-medium kaon vector potential plays an important role in high density nuclear matter.

Directed Flow of $Λ$-Hyperons in 2-6 AGeV Au+Au Collisions

Directed flow measurements for $Λ$-hyperons are presented and compared to those for protons produced in the same Au+Au collisions (2, 4, and 6 AGeV; $b < 5 - 6$ fm). The measurements indicate that $Λ$-hyperons flow consistently in the same direction and with smaller magnitudes than those of protons. Such a strong positive flow [for $Λ$s] has been predicted in calculations which include the influence of the $Λ$-nucleon potential. The experimental flow ratio $Λ$/p is in qualitative agreement with expectations ($\sim 2/3$) from the quark counting rule at 2 AGeV but is found to decrease with increasing beam energy.

Azimuthal Dependence of Pion Interferometry at the AGS

Two-pion correlation functions, measured as a function of azimuthal emission angle with respect to the reaction plane, provide novel information on the anisotropic shape and orientation of the pion-emitting zone formed in heavy ion collisions. We present the first experimental determination of this information, for semi-central Au+Au collisions at 2-6 AGeV. The source extension perpendicular to the reaction plane is greater than the extension in the plane, and tilt of the pion source in coordinate space is found to be opposite its tilt in momentum space.

Sideward Flow in Au + Au Collisions Between 2A GeV and 8A GeV

Using the large acceptance Time Projection Chamber of experiment E895 at Brookhaven, measurements of collective sideward flow in Au + Au collisions at beam energies of 2, 4, 6 and 8A GeV are presented in the form of in-plane transverse momentum and the first Fourier coefficient of azimuthal anisotropy v_1. These measurements indicate a smooth variation of sideward flow as a function of beam energy. The data are compared with four nuclear transport models which have an orientation towards this energy range. All four exhibit some qualitative trends similar to those found in the data, although none shows a consistent pattern of agreement within experimental uncertainties.

Lambda Hyperons in 2 A*GeV Ni + Cu Collisions

A sample of Lambda's produced in 2 A*GeV Ni + Cu collisions has been obtained with the EOS Time Projection Chamber at the Bevalac. Low background in the invariant mass distribution allows for the unambiguous demonstration of Lambda directed flow. The transverse mass spectrum at mid-rapidity has the characteristic shoulder-arm shape of particles undergoing radial transverse expansion. A linear dependence of Lambda multiplicity on impact parameter is observed, from which a total Lambda + Sigma^0 production cross section of $112 +/- 24 mb is deduced. Detailed comparisons with the ARC and RVUU models are made.
