Unified paradigm for interface dynamics

In this paper we develop a common theoretical framework for the dynamics of thin featureless interfaces. We explicitly demonstrate that the same phase field and velocity dependent one-scale models characterizing the dynamics of relativistic domain walls, in a cosmological context, can also successfully describe, in a friction dominated regime, the dynamics of nonrelativistic interfaces in a wide variety of material systems. We further show that a statistical version of von Neumann's law applies in the case of scaling relativistic interface networks, implying that, although relativistic and nonrelativistic interfaces have very different dynamics, a single simulation snapshot is not able to clearly distinguish the two regimes. We highlight that crucial information is contained in the probability distribution function for the number of edges of domains bounded by the interface network and explain why laboratory tests with nonrelativistic interfaces can be used to rule out cosmological domain walls as a significant dark energy source.

Generalized self-dual Chern-Simons vortices

We search for vortices in a generalized Abelian Chern-Simons model with a nonstandard kinetic term. We illustrate our results, plotting and comparing several features of the vortex solution of the generalized model with those of the vortex solution found in the standard Chern-Simons model.

Compactlike kinks and vortices in generalized models

This work deals with the presence of topological defects in k-field models, where the dynamics is generalized to include higher order power in the kinetic term. We investigate kinks in (1,1) dimensions and vortices in (2,1) dimensions, focusing on some specific features of the solutions. In particular, we show how the kinks and vortices change to compactlike solutions, controlled by the parameter used to introduce the generalized models.

Supersymmetric extensions of k-field models

We investigate the supersymmetric extension of k-field models, in which the scalar field is described by generalized dynamics. We illustrate some results with models that support static solutions with the standard kink or the compact profile.

Lorentz-violating effects on topological defects generated by two real scalar fields

The influence of a Lorentz-violation on soliton solutions generated by a system of two coupled scalar fields is investigated. Lorentz violation is induced by a fixed tensor coefficient that couples the two fields. The Bogomol'nyi method is applied and first-order differential equations are obtained whose solutions minimize energy and are also solutions of the equations of motion. The analysis of the solutions in phase space shows how the stability is modified with the Lorentz violation. It is shown explicitly that the solutions preserve linear stability despite the presence of Lorentz violation. Considering Lorentz violation as a small perturbation, an analytical method is employed to yield analytical solutions.

The role of domain wall junctions in Carter's pentahedral model

The role of domain wall junctions in Carter's pentahedral model is investigated both analytically and numerically. We perform, for the first time, field theory simulations of such model with various initial conditions. We confirm that there are very specific realizations of Carter's model corresponding to square lattice configurations with X-type junctions which could be stable. However, we show that more realistic realizations, consistent with causality constraints, do lead to a scaling domain wall network with Y-type junctions. We determine the network properties and discuss the corresponding cosmological implications, in particular for dark energy.

New family of sine-Gordon models

This work deals with a new family of models, which includes the sine-Gordon model and the double-sine-Gordon, triple-sine-Gordon and so on. The investigation is based on a deformation procedure, which is used to deform a well-known model, to get to the family of sine-Gordon models. Due to properties of the procedure, we get to the models and find the corresponding solutions explicitly, together with all the important features they engender.

Bifurcation and pattern changing with two real scalar fields

This work deals with bifurcation and pattern changing in models described by two real scalar fields. We consider generic models with quartic potentials and show that the number of independent polynomial coefficients affecting the ratios between the various domain wall tensions can be reduced to 4 if the model has a superpotential. We then study specific one-parameter families of models and compute the wall tensions associated with both BPS and non-BPS sectors. We show how bifurcation can be associated to modification of the patterns of domain wall networks and illustrate this with some examples which may be relevant to describe realistic situations of current interest in high energy physics. In particular, we discuss a simple solution to the cosmological domain wall problem.

Impact of Lorentz violation on the dynamics of inflation

This work deals with the dynamics of inflation in the context of a scalar-vector-tensor theory of gravity exhibiting spontaneous Lorentz violation at early times. We describe a first-order formalism which we use to obtain new exact Lorentz violating inflationary solutions for a broad family of models, some in the absence of a potential for the inflaton field. Our results show that different conditions are required to solve the horizon and flatness problems. In particular, we find a necessary condition for inflation to provide a solution to both problems and we show that in inflationary models with no inflaton potential a period of superinflation might be necessary to solve the flatness problem.

Braneworld Models of Scalar Fields with Generalized Dynamics

This work deals with braneworld models driven by real scalar fields with nonstandard dynamics. We develop the first-order formalism for models with standard gravity but with the scalar fields having generalized dynamics. We illustrate the results with examples of current interest, and we find analytical and numerical solutions for warp factors and scalar fields. The results indicate that the generalized braneworld scenario is classically stable, and capable of localizing gravity

p-brane dynamics in N+1-dimensional FRW universes

We study the evolution of maximally symmetric $p$-branes with a $S_{p-i}\otimes \mathbbm{R}^i$ topology in flat expanding or collapsing homogeneous and isotropic universes with $N+1$ dimensions (with $N \ge 3$, $p < N$, $0 \le i < p$). We find the corresponding equations of motion and compute new analytical solutions for the trajectories in phase space. For a constant Hubble parameter, $H$, and $i=0$ we show that all initially static solutions with a physical radius below a certain critical value, $r_c^0$, are periodic while those with a larger initial radius become frozen in comoving coordinates at late times. We find a stationary solution with constant velocity and physical radius, $r_c$, and compute the root mean square velocity of the periodic $p$-brane solutions and the corresponding (average) equation of state of the $p$-brane gas. We also investigate the $p$-brane dynamics for $H \neq {\rm constant}$ in models where the evolution of the universe is driven by a perfect fluid with constant equation of state parameter, $w={\cal P}_p/ρ_p$, and show that a critical radius, $r_c$, can still be defined for $ -1 \le w < w_c$ with $w_c=(2-N)/N$. We further show that for $w \sim w_c$ the critical radius is given approximately by $r_c H \propto (w_c-w)^{γ_c}$ with $γ_c=-1/2$ ($r_c H \to \infty$ when $w \to w_c$). Finally, we discuss the impact that the large scale dynamics of the universe can have on the macroscopic evolution of very small loops.

First-order framework and generalized global defect solutions

This work deals with defect structures in models described by scalar fields. The investigations focus on generalized models, with the kinetic term modified to allow for a diversity of possibilities. We develop a new framework, in which we search for first-order differential equations which solve the equations of motion. The main issue concerns the introduction of a new function, which works like the superpotential usually considered in the standard situation. We investigate the problem in the general case, with an arbitrary number of fields, and we present several explicit examples in the case of a single real scalar field.

Dynamics of domain wall networks with junctions

We use a combination of analytic tools and an extensive set of the largest and most accurate three-dimensional field theory numerical simulations to study the dynamics of domain wall networks with junctions. We build upon our previous work and consider a class of models which, in the limit of large number $N$ of coupled scalar fields, approaches the so-called `ideal' model (in terms of its potential to lead to network frustration). We consider values of $N$ between N=2 and N=20, and a range of cosmological epochs, and we also compare this class of models with other toy models used in the past. In all cases we find compelling evidence for a gradual approach to scaling, strongly supporting our no-frustration conjecture. We also discuss the various possible types of junctions (including cases where there is a hierarchy of them) and their roles in the dynamics of the network. Finally, we revise the Zel'dovich bound and provide an updated cosmological bound on the energy scale of this type of defect network: it must be lower than $10 {\rm keV}$.

New Lump-like Structures in Scalar-field Models

In this work we investigate lump-like solutions in models described by a single real scalar field. We start considering non-topological solutions with the usual lump-like form, and then we study other models, where the bell-shape profile may have varying amplitude and width, or develop a flat plateau at its top, or even induce a lump on top of another lump. We suggest possible applications where these exotic solutions might be used in several distinct branches of physics.

Classical behavior of deformed sine-Gordon models

In this work we deform the phi^4 model with distinct deformation functions, to propose a diversity of sine-Gordon-like models. We investigate the proposed models and we obtain all the topological solutions they engender. In particular, we introduce non-polynomial potentials which support some exotic two-kink solutions.

f(R)-Brane

We investigate the existence of brane solutions in braneworld scenarios described by real scalar field in the presence of modified $f(R)$ gravity with a single extra dimension. In the case of constant curvature, we obtain first-order differential equations which solve the equations of motion and ease the search for explicit analytical solutions. Several examples of current interest are investigated to illustrate the results of the present work.

Generalized Global Defect Solutions

We investigate the presence of defect structures in generalized models described by real scalar field in $(1,1)$ space-time dimensions. We work with two distinct generalizations, one in the form of a product of functions of the field and its derivative, and the other as a sum. We search for static solutions and study the corresponding linear stability on general grounds. We illustrate the results with several examples, where we find stable defect structures of modified profile. In particular, we show how the new defect solutions may give rise to evolutions not present in the standard scenario in higher spatial dimensions.
