The Impact of an Innovative Education and Outreach Project by a Physics Experiment

When the education and outreach project of ATLAS, a leading experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, was initiated in 1995, we wanted to share the drama and excitement in the exploration and discovery of new science. The goal was to make these fascinating stories understandable and available to everybody and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. The education and outreach material included classroom activities, an extensive website, videos, a YouTube channel, social media, a planetarium show, and materials related to search for and discovery of the Higgs Boson.

Education and Outreach in Particle Physics

There are many varied programs of education and outreach in particle physics. This report for the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society 2001 meeting reviews the impact of these programs in general, and also gives several examples of ongoing programs with a primary focus on those in the US.

Squarks in Tevatron Dilepton Events ?

We consider unusual events in the CDF and D0 dilepton+jets sample with very high ET(lepton) and ET(missing). It is possible, but very unlikely, that these events originate from top quark pair production; however, they have characteristics that are better accounted for by decays of supersymmetric quarks with mass in the region of 300 GeV.

A Multilepton signal for supersymmetric particles in Tevatron data?

The CDF and D0 collaborations have both reported unusual events in the dilepton+jets sample with very high lepton and missing transverse energies. It is possible, but very unlikely, that these events originate from top quark pair production; however, they have characteristics that are better accounted for by decays of supersymmetric quarks with mass in the region of 300 GeV: $\widetilde q \to q \widetilde χ$, $\widetildeχ\to ν\widetilde\ell$, $\widetilde\ell\rightarrow \ell \widetilde χ_1^0$. Such a supersymmetric origin also leads to events with large transverse missing energy and either 0, 1, 2 same-sign, or 3 isolated leptons.

Discovering Supersymmetry with Like-sign Dileptons

Supersymmetry may be discovered at hadron colliders by searching for events similar to the top quark signal of two isolated leptons. In the case of gluino production, the most distinguishing feature is that in half the events the two leading leptons have the same sign. We demonstrate the remarkable sensitivity of this gluino signature at both the Fermilab Tevatron Collider and at the Superconducting Super Collider. Techniques for approximately determining the gluino mass are discussed.
