Determination of the basic parameters of the dwarf nova EY Cygni

High-dispersion spectroscopy of EY Cyg obtained from data spanning twelve years show, for the first time, the radial velocity curves from both emission and absorption line systems, yielding semi-amplitudes K_{em}=24+/- 4 km s^-1 and K_{abs}=54+/- 2 km s^-1. The orbital period of this system is found to be 0.4593249(1)d. The masses of the stars, their mass ratio and their separation are found to be M_1 sin^3 i = 0.015+/-0.002 M_sun, M_2 sin^3 i = 0.007+/-0.002 M_sun, q = K_1/K_2 = M_2/M_1 = 0.44+/-0.02 and a sin i = 0.71+/-0.04 R_sun. We also found that the spectral type of the secondary star is around K0,consistent with an early determination by Kraft(1962). From the spectral type of the secondary star and simple comparisons with single main sequence stars, we conclude that the radius of the secondary star is about 30 per cent larger than a main sequence star of the same mass. We also present VRI CCD photometric observations, some of them simultaneous with the spectroscopic runs. The photometric data shows several light modulations, including a sinusoidal behaviour with twice the frequency of the orbital period, characteristic of the modulation coming from an elongated, irradiated secondary star. Low and high states during quiescence are also detected and discussed. From several constrains, we obtain tight limits for the inclination angle of the binary system between 13 and 15 degrees, with a best value of 14 degrees obtained from the sinusoidal light curve analysis. From the above results we derive masses M_1 = 1.10+/-0.09 M_sun, M_2 = 0.49+/-0.09 M_sun, and a binary separation a = 2.9+/- 0.1 R_sun.

Simultaneous photometry and echelle-spectroscopy of the dwarf nova BZ Ursae Majoris during the 2005 January Outburst

We report simultaneous photometric and echelle-spectroscopic observations of the dwarf nova BZ UMa during which we were lucky to catch the system at the onset of an outburst, the development of which we traced in detail from quiescence to early decline. The outburst had a precursor, and was of a short duration (~5 days) with a highly asymmetrical light curve. On the rise we observed a `jump' during which the brightness almost doubled over the course of half an hour. Power spectra analysis revealed well-defined oscillations with period of ~42 minutes. Using Doppler tomography we found that the unusual emission distribution detected in quiescence held during the outburst. After the maximum a new emission source arose, from the inner hemisphere of the secondary star, which became the brightest at that time. We analyse this outburst in terms of `inside-out' and `outside-in' types, in order to determine which of these types occured in BZ UMa.

Time-resolved observations of the short period CV SDSS J123813.73-033933.0

We observed a new and poorly studied cataclysmic variable (CV) SDSS J123813.73-033933.0 to determine its classification and binary parameters. Simultaneous time-resolved photometric and spectroscopic observations were carried out to conduct period analysis and Doppler tomography mapping. From radial velocity measurements of the Ha line we determined its orbital period to be 0.05592+/-0.00035$ days (80.53min). This period is longer than the first estimate of 76 min by Szkody et al. (2003), but still at the very edge of the period limit for hydrogen-rich CVs. The spectrum shows double-peaked Balmer emission lines flanked by strong broad Balmer absorption, indicating a dominant contribution by the white dwarf primary star, and is similar to the spectra of short-period low-mass transfer WZ Sge-like systems. The photometric light curve shows complex variability. The system undergoes cyclic brightening up to 0.4 mags, which are of semi-periodic nature with periods of the order of 8-12 hours. We also detect a 40.25 min variability of ~0.15 mag corresponding to half of the orbital period. Amplitude of the latter increases with the cyclic brightening of the system. We discuss the variable accretion rate and its impact on the hot spot as the most probable reason for both observed processes. SDSS J123813.73-033933.0 is preliminary classified as a WZ Sge-like short period system with low and unstable accretion rate.

Time-resolved observations of the short period CV SDSS J123813.73-033933

We present simultaneous spectral and photometric observations of SDSS J123813.73-033933.0. From Ha radial velocity measurements we determined the orbital period of the system to be 0.05592+/-0.00002 days (80.53 min). The spectrum shows double Balmer emission lines flanked by strong, broad absorption, indicating a dominant contribution from the white dwarf. The photometric light curve shows complex variability. The system undergoes cyclic brightening up to 0.4 mag which are semi-periodical on short time scales with periods of the order of 7-12 hours. We also detect 40.25 min variability (~0.15 mag) in the light curve, that corresponds to half the orbital period. Its amplitude increases with the cyclic brightening of the system.

uvby(-$β$) photometry of high-velocity and metal-poor stars X. Stars of very low metal abundance: observations, reddenings, metallicities, classifications, distances, and relative ages

uvby(--$β$) photometry has been obtained for an additional 411 very metal-poor stars selected from the HK survey, and used to derive basic parameters such as interstellar reddenings, metallicities, photometric classifications, distances, and relative ages... These very metal-poor stars are compared to M92 in the c_0,(b-y)_0 diagram, and evidence is seen for field stars 1-3 Gyrs younger than this globular cluster. The significance of these younger very metal-poor stars is discussed in the context of Galactic evolution, mentioning such possibilities as hierarchical star-formation/mass-infall of very metal-poor material and/or accretion events whereby this material has been acquired from other (dwarf) galaxies with different formation and chemical-enrichment histories

Long lasting instabilities in granular mixtures

We have performed experiments of axial segregation in the Oyama's drum. We have tested binary granular mixtures during very long times. The segregation patterns have been captured by a CCD camera and spatio-temporal graphs are created. We report the occurence of instabilities which can last several hours. We stress that those instabilities originate from the competition between axial and radial segregations. We put into evidence the occurence of giant fluctuations in the fraction of grain species along the surface during the unstable periods.

FS Aur - a new class of Cataclysmic Variables or the missing link between Intermediate Polars and SW Sex objects?

FS Aur is a known dwarf nova with an orbital period of about 85.7 minutes. It has been assumed to be a member of the SU UMa subclass of cataclysmic variables (CVs), but previous searches for superhumps and superoutburst have been unsuccessful. We conducted a series of photometric and spectroscopic observations of FS Aur during quiescence. We confirmed its short orbital period from radial velocity measurements. However, the long-term photometry revealed an unexpected result: the system also shows a distinct 0.24 mag modulation in the BVR photometric bands with a period of 205.5 min, which is 2.4 times longer than the orbital period. We discuss various possible causes for such a peculiar behavior.

Experimental and Computer Simulation Study of the Radionuclides Produced in Thin Bi-209 Targets by 130 MeV and 1.5 GeV Protons

The results of experimental and computer simulation studies of the yields of residual product nuclei in Bi-209 thin targets irradiated by 130 MeV and 1.5 GeV protons are presented. The yields were measured by direct high-precision gamma-spectrometry. The gamma-spectrometer resolution was 1.8 keV in the 1332 keV line. The gamma-spectra were processed by the ASPRO code. The gamma-lines were identified, and the cross sections defined, by the SIGMA code using the GDISP radioactive database. The process was monitored by the Al-27(p,x)Na-24 reaction. Results are presented for comparisons between the 209-Bi(p,x) reaction yields obtained experimentally and simulated by the HETC, GNASH, LAHET, INUCL, CEM95, CASCADE, and ALICE codes.
