Herschel photometry of brightest cluster galaxies in cooling flow clusters

The dust destruction timescales in the cores of clusters of galaxies are relatively short given their high central gas densities. However, substantial mid-infrared and sub-mm emission has been detected in many brightest cluster galaxies. In this letter we present Herschel PACS and SPIRE photometry of the brightest cluster galaxy in three strong cooling flow clusters, A1068, A2597 and Zw3146. This photometry indicates that a substantial mass of cold dust is present (>3 x 10^7 Mo) at temperatures significantly lower (20-28K) than previously thought based on limited MIR and/or sub-mm results. The mass and temperature of the dust appear to match those of the cold gas traced by CO with a gas-to-dust ratio of 80-120.

Field induced spin reorientation and giant spin-lattice coupling in EuFe2As2

We have studied a EuFe2As2 single crystal by neutron diffraction under magnetic fields up to 3.5 T and temperatures down to 2 K. A field induced spin reorientation is observed in the presence of a magnetic field along both the a and c axes, respectively. Above critical field, the ground state antiferromagnetic configuration of Eu$^{2+}$ moments transforms into a ferromagnetic structure with moments along the applied field direction. The magnetic phase diagram for Eu magnetic sublattice in EuFe2As2 is presented. A considerable strain ($\sim$0.9%) is induced by the magnetic field, caused by the realignment of the twinning structure. Furthermore, the realignment of the twinning structure is found to be reversible with the rebound of magnetic field, which suggested the existence of magnetic shape-memory effect. The Eu moment ordering exhibits close relationship with the twinning structure. We argue that the Zeeman energy in combined with magnetic anisotropy energy is responsible for the observed spin-lattice coupling.

Diffuse Neutron Scattering Study of Magnetic Correlations in half-doped La0.5Ca0.5-xSrxMnO3 (x = 0.1, 0.3 and 0.4) Manganites

The short range ordered magnetic correlations have been studied in half doped La0.5Ca0.5-xSrxMnO3 (x = 0.1, 0.3 and 0.4) compounds by polarized neutron scattering technique. On doping Sr2+ for Ca2+ ion, these compounds with x = 0.1, 0.3, and 0.4 exhibit CE-type, mixture of CE-type and A-type, and A-type antiferromagnetic ordering, respectively. Magnetic diffuse scattering is observed in all the compounds above and below their respective magnetic ordering temperatures and is attributed to magnetic polarons. The correlations are primarily ferromagnetic in nature above T\_N, although a small antiferromagnetic contribution is also evident. Additionally, in samples x = 0.1 and 0.3 with CE-type antiferromagnetic ordering, superlattice diffuse reflections are observed indicating correlations between magnetic polarons. On lowering temperature below T\_N the diffuse scattering corresponding to ferromagnetic correlations is suppressed and the long range ordered antiferromagnetic state is established. However, the short range ordered correlations indicated by enhanced spin flip scattering at low Q coexist with long range ordered state down to 3K. In x = 0.4 sample with A-type antiferromagnetic ordering, superlattice diffuse reflections are absent. Additionally, in comparison to x = 0.1 and 0.3 sample, the enhanced spin flip scattering at low Q is reduced at 310K, and as temperature is reduced below 200K, it becomes negligibly low. The variation of radial correlation function, g(r) with temperature indicates rapid suppression of ferromagnetic correlations at the first nearest neighbor on approaching TN. Sample x = 0.4 exhibits growth of ferromagnetic phase at intermediate temperatures (~ 200K). This has been further explored using SANS and neutron depolarization techniques.

Inelastic X-ray Scattering Study of superconducting SmFeAs(O$_{1-x}$F$_{y}$) Single Crystals: Evidence for Strong Momentum-Dependent Doping-Induced Renormalizations of Optical Phonons

We report inelastic x-ray scattering experiments on the lattice dynamics in SmFeAsO and superconducting SmFeAsO$_{0.6}$F$_{0.35}$ single crystals. Particular attention was paid to the dispersions along the [100] direction of three optical modes close to 23 meV, polarized out of the FeAs planes. Remarkably, two of these modes are strongly renormalized upon fluorine doping. These results provide significant insight into the energy and momentum dependence of the coupling of the lattice to the electron system and underline the importance of spin-phonon coupling in the superconducting iron-pnictides.

Neutron diffraction study on phase transition and thermal expansion of SrFeAsF

The magnetic ordering and crystal structure of iron pnictide SrFeAsF was investigated by using neutron powder diffraction method. With decreasing temperature, the tetragonal to orthorhombic phase transition is found at 180 K, while the paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic phase transition set in at 133 K. Similar to the parent compound of other iron pnictide system, the striped Fe magnetism is confirmed in antiferromagnetic phase and the Fe moment of 0.58(6) uB aligned along long a axis. The thermal expansion of orthorhombic phase of SrFeAsF is also investigated. Based on the Grueneisen approximation and Debye approximation for internal energy, the volume of SrFeAsF can be well fitted with Debye temperature of 347(5) K. The experimental atomic displacement parameters for different crystallographic sites in SrFeAsF are analyzed with Debye model. The results suggested that the expansion of FeAs layers plays an important role in determining the thermal expansion coefficient.

Measurement of anharmonicity of phonons in negative thermal expansion compound Zn(CN)2 by high pressure inelastic neutron scattering

Zn(CN)2 is known to have an isotropic negative thermal expansion (NTE) coefficient (about -51 x 10-6 K-1) over 10-370 K that is twice as large as that of ZrW2O8. We have measured the pressure dependence of the phonon spectra up to 30 meV from a polycrystalline sample of Zn(CN)2 at pressures of 0, 0.3, 1.9 and 2.8 kbar at temperatures of 165 and 225 K. The measurements enabled us to estimate the energy dependence of the ratios Gamma/B (Gamma are Gruneisen parameters as a function of phonon energy Ei at ambient pressure and B is the bulk modulus), which reflect the anharmonicity of phonons. We conclude that the phonon modes of low energy below 15 meV play an important role in the understanding of the NTE behavior in Zn(CN)2 and the measured anharmonicity can quantitatively explain the NTE.

Pressure dependence of phonon modes across the tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal phase transition in CaFe2As2

The pressure dependence of a large number of phonon modes in CaFe2As2 with energies covering the full range of the phonon spectrum has been studied using inelastic x-ray and neutron scattering. The observed phonon frequency changes are in general rather small despite the sizable changes of the lattice parameters at the phase transition. This indicates that the bonding properties are not profoundly altered by the phase transition. The transverse acoustic phonons propagating along the c-direction are an exception because they stiffen very significantly in response to the large contraction of the c-axis. The lattice parameters are found to change significantly as a function of pressure before, during and after the first-order phase transition. However, the frequencies change nearly uniformly with the change in the lattice parameters due to pressure, with no regard specifically to the first-order phase transition. Density functional theory describes the frequencies in both the zero pressure and in the collapsed phase in a satisfactory way if based on the respective crystal structures.

Magnetic structure of EuFe2As2 determined by single crystal neutron diffraction

Among various parent compounds of iron pnictide superconductors, EuFe2As2 stands out due to the presence of both spin density wave of Fe and antiferromagnetic ordering (AFM) of the localized Eu2+ moment. Single crystal neutron diffraction studies have been carried out to determine the magnetic structure of this compound and to investigate the coupling of two magnetic sublattices. Long range AFM ordering of Fe and Eu spins was observed below 190 K and 19 K, respectively. The ordering of Fe2+ moments is associated with the wave vector k = (1,0,1) and it takes place at the same temperature as the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural phase transition, which indicates the strong coupling between structural and magnetic components. The ordering of Eu moment is associated with the wave vector k = (0,0,1). While both Fe and Eu spins are aligned along the long a axis as experimentally determined, our studies suggest a weak coupling between the Fe and Eu magnetism.

Dynamic Disorder in Negative Thermal Expansion Compound Zn(CN)2

Dynamical disorder in negative thermal expansion compound Zn(CN)2 is investigated by quasielastic neutron scattering technique in the temperature range 170-320 K. Significant quasielastic broadening is observed above the phase transition temperature of about 250 K, however no broadening is observed at 220 K and below. Data at high temperatures are analyzed assuming the CN reorientation. Characteristic time associated with the CN orientation is estimated as 16 ps and 11 ps at 270 and 320 K respectively.

Anomalous Phonons in CaFe2As2

Extensive inelastic neutron scattering measurements of phonons on a single crystal of CaFe2As2 allowed us to establish a fairly complete picture of phonon dispersions in the main symmetry directions. The phonon spectra were also calculated by density functional theory (DFT) in the local density approximation (LDA). There are serious discrepancies between calculations done for the optimized structure and experiment, because the optimised structure is not the ambient pressure structure but is very close to the collapsed structure reached at p = 3.5 kbar. However, if the experimental crystal structure is used the calculation gives correct frequencies of most phonons. The most important new result is that linewidths/frequencies of certain modes are larger/softer than predicted by DFT-LDA. We also observed strong temperature dependence of some phonons near the structural phase transition near 173K. This behavior may indicate anomalously strong electron phonon coupling and/or anharmonicity, which may be important to the mechanism of superconductivity.

Effects of magnetic doping and temperature dependence on phonon dynamics in CaFe\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF compounds (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12)

We report detailed measurements of composition as well as temperature dependence of the phonon density-of-states in a new series of FeAs compounds with composition CaFe1\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12). The composition as well as temperature dependence of phonon spectra for CaFe\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12) compounds have been measured using time of flight IN4C and IN6 spectrometers at ILL, France. The comparison of phonon spectra at 300 K in these compounds shows that acoustic phonon modes up to 12 meV harden in the doped compounds in comparison to the parent CaFeAsF. While intermediate energy phonon modes from 15 meV to 25 meV are also found to shift towards high energies only in the 12 % Co doped CaFeAsF compound. The experimental results for CaFe\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12) are quite different from our previous phonon studies on parent and superconducting MFe2As2 (M=Ba, Ca, Sr) where low-energy acoustic phonon modes do not react with doping, while the phonon spectra in the intermediate range from 15 to 25 K are found to soften in these compounds. We argue that stronger spin phonon interaction play an important role for the emergence of superconductivity in these compounds. The lattice dynamics of CaFe\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12) compounds is also investigated using the ab-initio as well as shell model phonon calculations. We show that the nature of the interaction between the Ca and the Fe-As layers in CaFeAsF compounds is quite different compared with our previous studies on CaFe2As2.

Lattice Dynamics and High Pressure Phase Stability of Zircon Structured Natural Silicates

We report a lattice dynamics study of relative stability of various phases of natural silicates MSiO4 (M=Zr, Hf, Th, U) as a function of pressure (P) and temperature (T), which is important in the context of their use in nuclear waste storage media. Extending our previous work on ZrSiO4, the Gibbs free energy has been calculated using a transferable interatomic potential in various phases over a range of P and T. Due to an interesting interplay between the vibrational entropy and atomic packing, the zircon (body centered tetragonal, I41/amd), scheelite (body centered tetragonal, I41/a) and huttonite (monoclinic, P21/n) phases occur at different P and T. It is shown that for ThSiO4 at high P, the huttonite and scheelite phases are favored at high and low T respectively. However, for both USiO4 and HfSiO4 the huttonite phase is dynamically unstable and the scheelite phase is stable as the high pressure phase. In fact, the calculations reveal that the stability of the huttonite phase is determined by the ionic size of the M-atom; this phase is unstable for the silicate with the smaller Hf and U ions and stable with the larger Th ion. The calculated phase diagrams are in fair agreement with the reported experimental observations. The calculated structures, phonon spectra, and various thermodynamic properties also fairly well reproduce the available experimental data. The low-energy phonons in the huttonite phase that contribute to its large vibrational entropy are found to involve librational motion of the silicate tetrahedral units.

Phonon Softening and Pressure-Induced Phase Transitions in Quartz Structured Compound, FePO4

Nuclear resonant inelastic x-ray scattering on quartz structured 57FePO4 as a function of pressure, up to 8 GPa reveals hardening of the low-energy phonons under applied pressures up to 1.5 GPa, followed by a large softening at 1.8 GPa upon approaching the phase transition pressure of ~2 GPa. The pressure-induced phase transitions in quartz-structured compounds have been predicted to be related to a soft phonon mode at the Brillouin-zone boundary (1/3, 1/3, 0) and to the break-down of the Born-stability criteria. Our results provide the first experimental evidence of this predicted phonon softening.

Phonon spectra in CaFe2As2 and Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2: Measurement of the pressure and temperature dependence and comparison with ab-initio and shell model calculations

We report the pressure and temperature dependence of the phonon density-of-states in superconducting Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2 (Tc=21 K) and the parent compound CaFe2As2, using inelastic neutron scattering. We observe no significant change in the phonon spectrum for Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2 at 295 K up to pressures of 5 kbar. The phonon spectrum for CaFe2As2 shows softening of the low-energy modes by about 1 meV when decreasing the temperature from 300 K to 180 K. There is no appreciable change in the phonon density of states across the structural and anti-ferromagnetic phase transition at 172 K. These results, combined with our earlier temperature dependent phonon density of states measurements for Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2, indicate that the softening of low-energy phonon modes in these compounds may be due to the interaction of phonons with electron or short-range spin fluctuations in the normal state of the superconducting compound as well as in the parent compound. The phonon spectra are analyzed with ab-initio and empirical model calculations giving partial densities of states and dispersion relations.

Ab initio lattice dynamics simulations and inelastic neutron scattering spectra for studying phonons in BaFe2As2: Effect of structural phase transition, structural relaxation and magnetic ordering

We have performed extensive ab initio calculations to investigate phonon dynamics and their possible role in superconductivity in BaFe2As2 and related systems. The calculations are compared to inelastic neutron scattering data that offer improved resolution over published data [Mittal et al., PRB 78 104514 (2008)], in particular at low frequencies. Effects of structural phase transition and full/partial structural relaxation, with and without magnetic ordering, on the calculated vibrational density of states are reported. Phonons are best reproduced using either the relaxed magnetic structures or the experimental cell. Several phonon branches are affected by the subtle structural changes associated with the transition from the tetragonal to the orthorhombic phase. Effects of phonon induced distortions on the electronic and spin structure have been investigated. It is found that for some vibrational modes, there is a significant change of the electronic distribution and spin populations around the Fermi level. A peak at 20 meV in the experimental data falls into the pseudo-gap region of the calculation. This was also the case reported in our recent work combined with an empirical parametric calculation [Mittal et al., PRB 78 104514 (2008)]. The combined evidence for the coupling of electronic and spin degrees of freedom with phonons is relevant to the current interest in superconductivity in BaFe2As2 and related systems.

Neutron diffraction on antiferromagnetic ordering in single-crystal BaFe2As2

Neutron diffraction experiments have been carried out on a Sn-flux grown BaFe2As2 single crystal, the parent compound of the A-122 family of FeAs-based high-Tc superconductors. A tetragonal to orthorhombic structural phase transition and a three dimensional long-range antiferromagnetic ordering of the iron moment, with a unique magnetic propagation wavevector k = (1, 0, 1), have been found to take place at ~90 K. The magnetic moments of iron are aligned along the long a axis in the low temperature orthorhombic phase (Fmmm with b<a<c). Our results thus demonstrate that the magnetic structure of BaFe2As2 single crystal is the same as those in other A-122 iron pnictides compounds. We argue that the tin incorporation in the lattice is responsible for a smaller orthorhombic splitting and lower Neel temperature T_N observed in the experiment.

Magnetic order in CaFe1-xCoxAsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12) superconductor compounds

A Neutron Powder Diffraction (NPD) experiment has been performed to investigate the structural phase transition and magnetic order in CaFe1-xCoxAsF superconductor compounds (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12). The parent compound CaFeAsF undergoes a tetragonal to orthorhombic phase transition at 134(3) K, while the magnetic order in form of a spin-density wave (SDW) sets in at 114(3) K. The antiferromagnetic structure of the parent compound has been determined with a unique propagation vector k = (1,0,1) and the Fe saturation moment of 0.49(5)uB aligned along the long a-axis. With increasing Co doping, the long range antiferromagnetic order has been observed to coexist with superconductivity in the orthorhombic phase of the underdoped CaFe0.94Co0.06AsF with a reduced Fe moment (0.15(5)uB). Magnetic order is completely suppressed in optimally doped CaFe0.88Co0.12AsF. We argue that the coexistence of SDW and superconductivity might be related to mesoscopic phase separation.

Phonon dynamics in Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 and Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the phonon density-of-states in superconducting Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Tc=30 K) and Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2 (Tc=18 K). Compared with the parent compound BaFe2As2 doping affects mainly the lower and intermediate frequency part of the vibrations. Mass effects and lattice contraction cannot explain these changes. A lattice dynamical model has been used to identify the character of the various phonon bands. Softening of phonon modes below 10 meV has been observed in both samples on cooling from 300 K to 140 K. In the Ca doped compound the softening amounts to about 1 meV while for the Sr doped compound the softening is about 0.5 meV. There is no appreciable change in the phonon density of states when crossing Tc.
