Systematic X-ray absorption study of hole doping in BSCCO - phases

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) on the O 1s threshold was applied to Bi-based, single crystalline high temperature superconductors (HTc's), whose hole densities in the CuO2 planes was varied by different methods. XAS gives the intensity of the so-called pre-peak of the O 1s line due to the unoccupied part of the Zhang-Rice (ZR) singlet state. The effects of variation of the number n of CuO2 - planes per unit cell (n = 1,2,3) and the effect of La-substitution for Sr for the n = 1 and n = 2 phase were studied systematically. Furthermore the symmetry of the states could be probed by the polarization of the impinging radiation.

Corrector Power Supplies with a DAC Resolution up to 24 Bits based on 16 Bit DAC Devices

At BESSY the standard 16 bit resolution of the corrector power supplies was insufficient for the continous orbit drift correction. A new sophisticated design of the analog/digital I/O board increases the resolution of the analog output up to 24 bits without suffering on losses in the long term stability or the dynamic range of the correctors. This is achieved by a cost-efficient boarddesign using standard 16 bit DAC devices in an range-overlapping fine/coarse architecture.

Unusual electronic ground state of a prototype cuprate: band splitting of single CuO_2-plane Bi_2 Sr_(2-x) La_x CuO_(6+delta)

By in-situ change of polarization a small splitting of the Zhang-Rice singlet state band near the Fermi level has been resolved for optimum doped (x=0.4) Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ at the (pi,0)-point (R.Manzke et al. PRB 63, R100504 (2001). Here we treat the momentum dependence and lineshape of the split band by photoemission in the EDC-mode with very high angular and energy resolution. The splitting into two destinct emissions could also be observed over a large portion of the major symmetry line $Γ$M, giving the dispersion for the individual contributions. Since bi-layer effects can not be present in this single-layer material the results have to be discussed in the context of one-particle removal spectral functions derived from current theoretical models. The most prominent are microscopic phase separation including striped phase formation, coexisting antiferromagnetic and incommensurate charge-density-wave critical fluctuations coupled to electrons (hot spots) or even spin charge separation within the Luttinger liquid picture, all leading to non-Fermi liquid like behavior in the normal state and having severe consequences on the way the superconducting state forms. Especially the possibilty of observing spinon and holon excitations is discussed.

Fermi surface and superconducting gap of triple-layered Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+d

We present a comprehensive study performed with high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on triple-layered Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+d single crystals. By measurements above TC the Fermi surface topology defined by the Fermi level crossings of the CuO2-derived band was determined. A hole-like Fermi surface as for single and double-CuO2 layered Bi-based cuprates is found, giving new input to the current debate of the general Fermi surface topology of the high Tc superconductors. Furthermore, we present measurements of the superconducting gap of Bi-2223 and show that there are clear indications for a strong anisotropy of the superconducting gap. The universal properties of this phase in comparison to the other Bi-based cuprates will be discussed.

Fermi surface map of the single-layer Bi-cuprate Bi_2Sr_(2-x)La_xCuO_(6+delta) at optimal doping

A first Fermi surface map of a single-layer high-Tc superconductor is presented. The experiments were carried out on optimally doped Bi_2Sr_(2-x)La_xCuO_(6+delta)(x=0.40) with synchrotron radiation which allow to discuss in detail the strong polarisation dependence of the emissions near the Fermi edge. For the cuprates only little is known about the impact of the electron-photon matrix element determining the photoelectron intensity. For the example of the model layered superconductor Bi_2Sr_(2-x)La_xCuO_(6+delta)it will be demonstrated that the polarization geometry has significant influence on the energy distribution curves at EF and consequently also for the determination of the topology and character of the Fermi surface (FS) by angle-resolved photoemission. For further clarification also a FS map of the n=2 material Bi-2212 has been measured applying a different polarisation geometry as previously used by Saini et al.. In the context of the current debate on the character of the Fermi surface of Bi-cuprates our results confirm a hole-like Fermi surface for n=1 as well as n=2 material, what might be the universal FS for high-Tc superconductors.

Novel Fine-Structure in the Low-Energy Excitation Spectrum of a High-Tc Superconductor by Polarization Dependent Photoemission

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy is performed on single crystals of the single-layer high-Tc superconductor Bi(2)Sr(2-x)La(x)CuO(6+d) at optimal doping (x=0.4) in order to study in great detail the Zhang-Rice (ZR) singlet band at the Fermi level. Besides the high crystal quality the advantages of a single-layer material are the absence of bilayer effects and the distinct reduction of thermal broadening. Due to the high energy and angle resolution and, most important, due to the controlled variation of the polarization vector of the synchrotron radiation the emission from the ZR singlet band reveals a distinct fine-structure. It consists of two maxima, the first showing only weak and the second at EF extremely strong polarization dependence. However, our observation has enormous consequences for line shape analyses and the determination of pseudo gaps by photoemission.

Natural linewidth analysis of d-band photoemission from Ag(110)

We report a high-resolution angle-resolved study of photoemission linewidths observed for Ag(110). A careful data analysis yields k$-resolved upper limits for the inverse inelastic lifetimes of $d$-holes at the X-point of the bulk band structure. At the upper $d$-band edge the hole-lifetime is $τ_h \geq 22 $fs, i.e. more than one order of magnitude larger than predicted for a free-electron gas. Following calculations for $d$-hole dynamics in Cu (I.\ Campillo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., in press) we interpret the lifetime enhancement by a small scattering cross-section of $d$- and $sp$-states below the Fermi level. With increasing distance to $E_F$ the $d$-hole lifetimes get shorter because of the rapidly increasing density of d-states and contributions of intra-$d$-band scattering processes, but remain clearly above free-electron-model predictions.

Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy of Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2 - a revisit

We have investigated the lowest binding-energy electronic structure of the model cuprate Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2 using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Our data from about 80 cleavages of Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2 single crystals give a comprehensive, self-consistent picture of the nature of the first electron-removal state in this model undoped CuO_2-plane cuprate. Firstly, we show a strong dependence on the polarization of the excitation light which is understandable in the context of the matrix element governing the photoemission process, which gives a state with the symmetry of a Zhang-Rice singlet. Secondly, the strong, oscillatory dependence of the intensity of the Zhang-Rice singlet on the exciting photon-energy is shown to be consistent with interference effects connected with the periodicity of the crystal structure in the crystallographic c-direction. Thirdly, we measured the dispersion of the first electron-removal states along G->(pi,pi) and G->(pi,0), the latter being controversial in the literature, and have shown that the data are best fitted using an extended t-J-model, and extract the relevant model parameters. An analysis of the spectral weight of the first ionization states for different excitation energies within the approach used by Leung et al. (Phys. Rev. B56, 6320 (1997)) results in a strongly photon-energy dependent ratio between the coherent and incoherent spectral weight. The possible reasons for this observation and its physical implications are discussed.

The normal state Fermi surface of pristine and Pb-doped Bi2212 from ARPES measurements and its photon energy independence

We address the question as to whether the topology of the normal state Fermi surface of Bi2212 - as seen in angle resolved photoemission - depends on the photon energy used to measure it. High resolution photoemission spectra and Fermi surface maps from pristine and Pb-doped Bi2212 are presented, recorded using both polarised and unpolarised radiation of differing energies. The data show clearly that no main band crosses the Fermi surface along the GMZ direction in reciprocal space, even for a photon energy of 32 eV, thus ruling out the existence of a G-centred, electron-like Fermi surface in this archetypal high Tc superconductor. The true topology of the normal state Fermi surface remains that of hole-like barrels centred at the X,Y points of the Brillouin zone.

The topology of the Fermi surface of Bi2212 from angle resolved photoemission

We present a study of the topology of the normal state Fermi surface (FS) of the high Tc superconductor Bi2212 using angle-resolved photoemission. We present FS mapping experiments, recorded using unpolarised radiation with high (E,k) resolution, and an extremely dense sampling of k-space. In addition, synchrotron radiation-based ARPES has been used to prove the energy independence of the FS as seen by photoemission. We resolve the current controversy regarding the normal state FS in Bi2212. The true picture is simple, self-consistent and robust: the FS is hole-like, with the form of rounded tubes centred on the corners of the Brillouin zone. Two further types of features are also clearly observed: shadow FSs, and diffraction replicas of the main FS caused by passage of the photoelectrons through the modulated Bi-O planes.

On the Fermi Liquid to Polaron Crossover II: Double Exchange and the Physics of "Colossal" Magnetoresistance

We use the dynamical mean field method to study a model of electrons Jahn-Teller coupled to localized classical oscillators and ferromagnetically coupled to ``core spins'', which, we argue, contains the essential physics of the ``colossal magnetoresistance'' manganites $Re_{1-x} A_x MnO_3$. We determine the different regimes of the model and present results for the temperature and frequency dependence of the conductivity, the electron spectral function and the root mean square lattice parameter fluctuations. We compare our results to data, and give a qualitative discussion of important physics not included in the calculation. Extensive use is made of results from a companion paper titled: ``On the Fermi Liquid to Polaron Crossover I: General Results''.

Dynamic Jahn-Teller Effect and Colossal Magnetoresistance in $La_{1-x}A_xMnO_3$

A model for $La_{1-x}Sr_xMnO_3$ which incorporates the physics of dynamic Jahn-Teller and double-exchange effects is presented and solved via a dynamical mean field approximation. In an intermediate coupling regime the interplay of these two effects is found to reproduce the behavior of the resistivity and magnetic transition temperature observed in $La_{1-x} Sr_x MnO_3$.

Recovery of information from black hole radiation by considering stimulated emission

We deal with the black hole information loss paradox by showing that the stimulated emission component of the black hole radiation contains information about the initial state of the system. The nonlocal behaviour that allows the recovery of information about the matter that falls behind the horizon appears in a natural way. We calculate the expectation value and probability distribution of particles at ${\cal J}^+$ for a non-vacuum initial state. The entropy of the final state is compared to that of a thermal state with the same energy per mode. We find that the information recovered about the initial state increases with the number $r$ of the initially incoming particles, reaching for example over 30\% for $r = 1000$. We point out that recovering information about the initial state, nevertheless, does not automatically imply the purity of the final state.
