Equipartition of several measures

We prove several results of the following type: any $d$ measures in $\mathbb R^d$ can be partitioned simultaneously into $k$ equal parts by a convex partition (this particular result is proved independently by Pablo Soberón). Another example is: Any convex body in the plane can be partitioned into $q$ parts of equal areas and perimeters provided $q$ is a prime power. The above results give a partial answer to several questions posed by A. Kaneko, M. Kano, R. Nandakumar, N. Ramana Rao, and I. Bárány. The proofs in this paper are inspired by the generalization of the Borsuk--Ulam theorem by M. Gromov and Y. Memarian. The main tolopogical tool in proving these facts is the lemma about the cohomology of configuration spaces originated in the work of V.A. Vasil'ev. A newer version of this paper, merged with the similar paper of A. Hubard and B. Aronov is {arXiv:1306.2741}.

A topological central point theorem

In this paper a generalized topological central point theorem is proved for maps of a simplex to finite-dimensional metric spaces. Similar generalizations of the Tverberg theorem are considered.

Geometric coincidence results from multiplicity of continuous maps

In this paper we study geometric coincidence problems in the spirit of the following problems by B. Grünbaum: How many affine diameters of a convex body in $\mathbb R^n$ must have a common point? How many centers (in some sense) of hyperplane sections of a convex body in $\mathbb R^n$ must coincide? One possible approach to such problems is to find topological reasons for multiple coincidences for a continuous map between manifolds of equal dimension. In other words, we need topological estimates for the multiplicity of a map. In this work examples of such estimates and their geometric consequences are presented.

Regular embeddings of manifolds and topology of configuration spaces

For a topological space $X$ we study continuous maps $f : X\to \mathbb R^m$ such that images of every pairwise distinct $k$ points are affinely (linearly) independent. Such maps are called affinely (linearly) $k$-regular embeddings. We investigate the cohomology obstructions to existence of regular embeddings and give some new lower bounds on the dimension $m$ as function of $X$ and $k$, for the cases $X$ is $\mathbb R^n$ or $X$ is an $n$-dimensional manifold. In the latter case, some nonzero Stiefel--Whitney classes of $X$ help to improve the bound.

Multiplicity of continuous maps between manifolds

We consider a continuous map $f :M\to N$ between two manifolds and try to estimate its multiplicity from below, i.e. find a $q$-tuple of pairwise distinct points $x_1,..., x_q\in M$ such that $f(x_1) = f(x_2) = ... = f(x_q)$. We show that there are certain characteristic classes of vector bundle $f^*TN-TM$ that guarantee a bound on the multiplicity of $f$. In particular, we prove some non-trivial bound on the multiplicity for a continuous map of a real projective space of certain dimension into a Euclidean space.

Partitions of nonzero elements of a finite field into pairs

In this paper we prove that the nonzero elements of a finite field with odd characteristic can be partitioned into pairs with prescribed difference (maybe, with some alternatives) in each pair. The algebraic and topological approaches to such problems are considered. We also give some generalizations of these results to packing translates in a finite or infinite field, and give a short proof of a particular case of the Eliahou--Kervaire--Plaigne theorem about sum-sets.

Dvoretzky type theorems for multivariate polynomials and sections of convex bodies

In this paper we prove the Gromov--Milman conjecture (the Dvoretzky type theorem) for homogeneous polynomials on $\mathbb R^n$, and improve bounds on the number $n(d,k)$ in the analogous conjecture for odd degrees $d$ (this case is known as the Birch theorem) and complex polynomials. We also consider a stronger conjecture on the homogeneous polynomial fields in the canonical bundle over real and complex Grassmannians. This conjecture is much stronger and false in general, but it is proved in the cases of $d=2$ (for $k$'s of certain type), odd $d$, and the complex Grassmannian (for odd and even $d$ and any $k$). Corollaries for the John ellipsoid of projections or sections of a convex body are deduced from the case $d=2$ of the polynomial field conjecture.

Equipartition of a measure by $(Z_p)^k$-invariant fans

We prove a result about partitioning an absolute continuous measure in $\mathbb R^d$ into 2d equal parts by a system of cones with common vertex, where $d$ is an odd prime power. The proof is topological and based on the calculation of the equivariant Euler class of a certain vector bundle.

A note on Makeev's conjectures

A counterexample is given for the Knaster-like conjecture of Makeev for functions on $S^2$. Some particular cases of another conjecture of Makeev, on inscribing a quadrangle into a smooth simple closed curve, are solved positively.

Configuration-like spaces and coincidences of maps on orbits

In this paper we study the spaces of $q$-tuples of points in a Euclidean space, without $k$-wise coincidences (configuration-like spaces). A transitive group action by permuting these points is considered, and some new upper bounds on the genus (in the sense of Krasnosel'skii--Schwarz and Clapp--Puppe) for this action are given. Some theorems of Cohen--Lusk type for coincidence points of continuous maps to Euclidean spaces are deduced.

Topological transversals to a family of convex sets

Let $\mathcal F$ be a family of compact convex sets in $\mathbb R^d$. We say that $\mathcal F $ has a \emph{topological $ρ$-transversal of index $(m,k)$} ($ρ<m$, $0<k\leq d-m$) if there are, homologically, as many transversal $m$-planes to $\mathcal F$ as $m$-planes containing a fixed $ρ$-plane in $\mathbb R^{m+k}$. Clearly, if $\mathcal F$ has a $ρ$-transversal plane, then $\mathcal F$ has a topological $ρ$-transversal of index $(m,k),$ for $ρ<m$ and $k\leq d-m$. The converse is not true in general. We prove that for a family $\mathcal F$ of $ρ+k+1$ compact convex sets in $\mathbb R^d$ a topological $ρ$-transversal of index $(m,k)$ implies an ordinary $ρ$-transversal. We use this result, together with the multiplication formulas for Schubert cocycles, the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of the Grassmannian, and different versions of the colorful Helly theorem by Bárány and Lovász, to obtain some geometric consequences.

Tverberg-type theorems for intersecting by rays

In this paper we consider some results on intersection between rays and a given family of convex, compact sets. These results are similar to the center point theorem, and Tverberg's theorem on partitions of a point set.

The genus and the Lyusternik-Schnirelmann category of preimages

In this paper some axiomatic generalization (function of open subsets) of the relative Lyusternik-Schnirelmann category is considered, incorporating the sectional category and the Schwarz genus as well. For this function and a given continuous map of the underlying space to a finite-dimensional metric space some lower bounds on the value of this function on the (neighborhood of) preimage of some point are given.

$Z_2$-index of the grassmanian $G_{2n}^n$

We study the real Grassmann manifold $G_{2n}^n$ (of $n$-subspaces in $\mathbb R^{2n}$), and the action of $Z_2$ on it by taking the orthogonal complement. The homological index of this action is estimated from above and from below. In case $n$ is a power of two it is shown that $\hind G_{2n}^n=2n-1$.

A measure of non-convexity in the plane and the Minkowski sum

In this paper a measure of non-convexity for a simple polygonal region in the plane is introduced. It is proved that for "not far from convex" regions this measure does not decrease under the Minkowski sum operation, and guarantees that the Minkowski sum has no "holes".
