$ν$-GMSB with Type III Seesaw and Phenomenology

We show that when the supersymmetric SU(5) model is extended to explain small neutrino masses by the type III seesaw mechanism, the new {\bf 24}-dimensional fields needed for the purpose can act as messengers for transmitting SUSY breaking from a hidden sector to the visible sector. For the three {\bf 24} case, the constraints of grand unification and suppressed lepton flavor violation restrict the seesaw scale in this case to be in the narrow range of $10^{12}-10^{13}$ GeV. The model predicts (i) a stable LSP gravitino with mass in the range of 1-10 MeV which can be a cold dark matter of the universe; (ii) a stau NLSP which is detectable at LHC; (iii) a lower bound on the branching ratio $BR(μ\to e γ)$ larger than $10^{-14}$ testable by the ongoing MEG experiment as well as characteristic particle spectrum different from other SUSY breaking scenarios. We also discuss the case with two {\bf 24} fields, which is the minimal case that can explain neutrino oscillation data.

Flavor Physics in SO(10) GUTs with Suppressed Proton decay Due to Gauged Discrete Symmetry

Generic SO(10) GUT models suffer from the problem that Planck scale induced non-renormalizable proton decay operators require extreme suppression of their couplings to be compatible with present experimental upper limits. One way to resolve this problem is to supplement SO(10) by simple gauged discrete symmetries which can also simultaneously suppress the renormalizable R-parity violating ones when they occur and make the theory "more natural". Here we discuss the phenomenological viability of such models. We first show that for both classes of models, e.g the ones that use ${\bf 16}_H$ or ${\bf 126}_H$ to break B-L symmetry, the minimal Higgs content which is sufficient for proton decay suppression is inadequate for explaining fermion masses despite the presence of all apparently needed couplings. We then present an extended ${\bf 16}_H$ model, with three {\bf 10} and three {\bf 45}-Higgs, where is free of this problem. We propose this as a realistic and "natural" model for fermion unification and discuss the phenomenology of this model e.g. its predictions for neutrino mixings and lepton flavor violation.

Supersymmetry Breaking by Type II Seesaw Assisted Anomaly Mediation

Anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB), when implemented in MSSM is known to suffer from the problem of negative slepton mass squared leading to breakdown of electric charge conservation. We show however that when MSSM is extended to explain small neutrino masses by including a pair of superheavy Higgs triplet superfields (the type II seesaw mechanism), the slepton masses can be deflected from the pure AMSB trajectory and become positive. In a simple model we present in this paper, the seesaw scale is about $10^{13}-10^{14}{\rm GeV}$. Gauge coupling unification can be maintained by embedding the triplet to SU(5) {\bf 15}-multiplet. In this scenario, bino is the LSP and its mass is nearly degenerate with NLSP slepton when the triplet mass is right around the seesaw scale.

Diquark Higgs at LHC

Existence of color sextet diquark Higgs fields with TeV masses will indicate a fundamentally different direction for unification than conventional grand unified theories. There is a class of partial unification models based on the gauge group $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times SU(4)_c$ that implement the seesaw mechanism for neutrino mass with seesaw scale around $10^{11}$ GeV, where indeed such light fields appear naturally despite the high gauge symmetry breaking scale. They couple only to up-type quarks in this model. We discuss phenomenological constraints on these fields and show that they could be detected at LHC via their decay to either $tt$ or single top + jet. We also find that existing Tevatron data gives a lower bound on its mass somewhere in the 400-500 GeV, for reasonable values of its coupling.

Inverted Mass Hierarchy from Scaling in the Neutrino Mass Matrix: Low and High Energy Phenomenology

Best-fit values of recent global analyzes of neutrino data imply large solar neutrino mixing, vanishing U_{e3} and a non-maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing angle theta_{23}. We show that these values emerge naturally by the hypothesis of "scaling" in the Majorana neutrino mass matrix, which states that the ratios of its elements are equal. It also predicts an inverted hierarchy for the neutrino masses. We point out several advantages and distinguishing tests of the scaling hypothesis compared to the L_e - L_mu - L_tau flavor symmetry, which is usually assumed to provide an understanding of the inverted hierarchy. Scenarios which have initially vanishing U_{e3} and maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing are shown to be unlikely to lead to non-maximal theta_{23} while keeping simultaneously U_{e3} zero. We find a peculiar ratio of the branching ratios mu -> e gamma and tau -> e gamma in supersymmetric seesaw frameworks, which only depends on atmospheric neutrino mixing and results in tau -> e gamma being unobservable. The consequences of the scaling hypothesis for high energy astrophysical neutrinos at neutrino telescopes are also investigated. Then we analyze a seesaw model based on the discrete symmetry D_4 times Z_2 leading to scaling in the low energy mass matrix and being capable of generating the baryon asymmetry of the Universe via leptogenesis. The relevant CP phase is identical to the low energy Majorana phase and successful leptogenesis requires an effective mass for neutrinoless double beta decay larger than 0.045 eV.

Minimal Seesaw as an Ultraviolet Insensitive Cure for the Problems of Anomaly Mediation

We show that an intermediate scale supersymmetric left-right seesaw scenario with automatic R-parity conservation can cure the problem of tachyonic slepton masses that arises when supersymmetry is broken by anomaly mediation, while preserving ultraviolet insensitivity. The reason for this is the existence of light B - L = 2 higgses with yukawa couplings to the charged leptons. We find these theories to have distinct predictions compared to the usual mSUGRA and gauge mediated models as well as the minimal AMSB models. Such predictions include a condensed gaugino mass spectrum and possibly a correspondingly condensed sfermion spectrum.

Natural Realizations of Seesaw in Mini-Warped Minimal SO(10)

The minimal SUSY SO(10) GUT models with {\bf 10}, {\bf 126} and {\bf 210} Higgs and only renormalizable couplings has been shown to provide a simple way to understand the neutrino mixings as well as the ratio $Δm^2_\odot/Δm^2_A$ in terms of quark mixing parameter $θ_{Cabibbo}$, provided neutrino masses are described by type II seesaw formula. However, in this minimal picture, it is impossible to realize type II dominance with renormalizable couplings in 4-dimensions. We show that this problem can be cured by embedding this model into a warped 5-dimensional space time with warping between the Planck and the GUT scale, where both type II as well as mixed seesaw formulae can be realized in a natural manner without expanding the Higgs sector. These models also avoid the possible problem of threshold effects associated with large Higgs representations since the theory above the GUT scale is now strongly coupled.

Right-Handed Quark Mixings in Minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model with General CP Violation

We present a systematic approach to solve analytically for the right-handed quark mixings in the minimal left-right symmetric model which generally has both explicit and spontaneous CP violations. The leading-order result has the same hierarchical structure as the left-handed CKM mixing, but with additional CP phases originating from a spontaneous CP-violating phase in the Higgs vev. We explore the phenomenology entailed by the new right-handed mixing matrix, particularly the bounds on the mass of $W_R$ and the CP phase of the Higgs vev.

Neutrino Mixings and Leptonic CP Violation from CKM Matrix and Majorana Phases

The high scale mixing unification hypothesis recently proposed by three of us (R. N. M., M. K. P. and G. R.) states that if at the seesaw scale, the quark and lepton mixing matrices are equal then for quasi-degenerate neutrinos, radiative corrections can lead to large solar and atmospheric mixings and small reactor angle at the weak scale in agreement with data. Evidence for quasi-degenerate neutrinos could, within this framework, be interpreted as a sign of quark-lepton unification at high scale. In the current work, we extend this model to show that the hypothesis works quite successfully in the presence of CP violating phases (which were set to zero in the first paper). In the case where the PMNS matrix is identical to the CKM matrix at the seesaw scale, with a Dirac phase but no Majorana phase, the low energy Dirac phase is predicted to be ($\simeq 0.3^{\circ}$) and leptonic CP-violation parameter $J_{CP} \simeq (4 - 8)\times 10^{-5}$ and $θ_{13} = 3.5^{\circ}$. If on the other hand, the PMNS matrix is assumed to also have Majorana phases initially, the resulting theory damps radiative magnification phenomenon for a large range of parameters but nevertheless has enough parameter space to give the two necessary large neutrino mixing angles. In this case, one has $θ_{13} = 3.5^{\circ} - 10^{\circ}$ and $|J_{CP}|$ as large as $0.02-0.04$ which are accessible to long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments.

Unified TeV Scale Picture of Baryogenesis and Dark Matter

We present a simple extension of MSSM which provides a unified picture of cosmological baryon asymmetry and dark matter. Our model introduces a gauge singlet field $N$ and a color triplet field $X$ which couple to the right--handed quark fields. The out--of equilibrium decay of the Majorana fermion $N$ mediated by the exchange of the scalar field $X$ generates adequate baryon asymmetry for $M_N \sim 100$ GeV and $M_X \sim$ TeV. The scalar partner of $N$ (denoted $\tilde{N}_1$) is naturally the lightest SUSY particle as it has no gauge interactions and plays the role of dark matter. $\tilde{N}_1$ annihilates into quarks efficiently in the early universe via the exchange of the fermionic $\tilde{X}$ field. The model is experimentally testable in (i) neutron--antineutron oscillations with a transition time estimated to be around $10^{10}$ sec, (ii) discovery of colored particles $X$ at LHC with mass of order TeV, and (iii) direct dark matter detection with a predicted cross section in the observable range.

Neutrino Mass and New Physics

We review the present state of and future outlook for our understanding of neutrino masses and mixings. We discuss what we think are the most important perspectives on the plausible and natural scenarios for neutrinos and what may have the most promise to throw light on the flavor problem of quarks and leptons. We focus on the seesaw mechanism which fits into the big picture of particle physics such as supersymmetry and grand unification providing a unified approach to flavor problem of quarks and leptons. We argue that in combination with family symmetries, this may be at the heart of a unified understanding of flavor puzzle. We also discuss other new physics ideas such as neutrinos in models with extra dimensions and possible theoretical implications of sterile neutrinos. We outline some tests for the various schemes.

Scaling in the Neutrino Mass Matrix

In an attempt to uncover any underlying structure in the neutrino mass matrix, we discuss the possibility that the ratios of elements of its Majorana mass matrix are equal. We call this "strong scaling Ansatz" for neutrino masses and study its phenomenological implications. Of three possible independent scale invariant possibilities, only one is allowed by current data, predicting in a novel way the vanishing of U_{e3} and an inverted hierarchy with the lightest neutrino having zero mass. The Ansatz has the additional virtue that it is not affected by renormalization running. We also discuss explicit models in which the scaling Ansatz is realized.

Connecting Leptogenesis to CP Violation in Neutrino Mixings in a Tri-bimaximal Mixing model

We show that in a recently proposed $S_3$ model for tri-bimaximal mixing pattern for neutrinos, CP violating phases in neutrino mixings are directly responsible for lepton asymmetry $ε_\ell$. In the exact tri-bimaximal limit, $ε_\ell$ is proportional to one of the Majorana phases whereas in the presence of small deviations from tri-bimaximal pattern, there are two contributions, one being proportional to the Dirac phase and the other to one of the two Majorana phases. In the second case, $θ_{13}$ is nonzero and correlated with the deviation from maximal atmospheric mixing.

Mixed Dark Matter in Universal Extra Dimension Models with TeV Scale $W_{R}$ and $Z'$

We show that in a class of universal extra dimension (UED) models that solves both the neutrino mass and proton decay problems using low scale left-right symmetry, the dark matter of the Universe consists of an admixture of KK photon and KK right-handed neutrinos. We present a full calculation of the dark matter density in these models taking into account the co-annihilation effects due to near by states such as the scalar partner of the KK photon as well as fermion states near the right-handed KK neutrino. Using the value of the relic CDM density, we obtain upper limits on $R^{-1}$ of about 400-650 GeV and $M_{Z'}\leq 1.5$ TeV, both being accessible to LHC. For a region in this parameter space where the KK right-handed neutrino contributes significantly to the total relic density of dark matter, we obtain a lower bound on the dark matter-nucleon scattering cross section of $10^{-44}$ cm$^2$, which can be probed by the next round of dark matter search experiments.

Reconciling the CAST and PVLAS Results

The PVLAS experiment has recently claimed evidence for an axion-like particle in the milli-electron-Volt mass range with a coupling to two photons that appears to be in contradiction with the negative results of the CAST experiment searching for solar axions. The simple axion interpretation of these two experimental results is therefore untenable and it has posed a challenge for theory. We propose a possible way to reconcile these two results by postulating the existence of an ultralight pseudo-scalar particle interacting with two photons and a scalar boson and the existence of a low scale phase transition in the theory.

Dark Matter in Universal Extra Dimension Models: $γ_{KK}$ vrs $ν_{R,KK}$

We show that in a class of universal extra dimension models (UED), which solves both the neutrino mass and proton decay problem, an admixture of KK photon and KK right handed neutrinos can provide the required amount of cold dark matter (CDM). This model has two parameters $R^{-1}$ and $M_{Z'}$ ($R$ is the radius of the extra space dimensions and $Z'$ the extra neutral gauge boson of the model). Using the value of the relic CDM density, combined with the results from the cryogenic searches for CDM, we obtain upper limits on $R^{-1}$ of about 400-650 GeV and $M_{Z'}\leq 1.5$ TeV, both being accessible to LHC. In some regions of the parameter space, the dark matter-nucleon scattering cross section can be as high as of $10^{-44}$ cm$^2$, which can be probed by the next round of dark matter search experiments.

Complex CKM from Spontaneous CP Violation Without Flavor Changing Neutral Current

We analyse the general constraints on unified gauge models with spontaneous CP breaking that satisfy the conditions that (i) CP violation in the quark sector is described by a realistic complex CKM matrix, and (ii) there is no significant flavor changing neutral current effects in the quark sector. We show that the crucial requirement in order to conform to the above conditions is that spontaneous CP breaking occurs at a very high scale by complex vevs of standard model singlet Higgs fields. Two classes of models are found, one consisting of pure Higgs extensions and the other one involving fermionic extensions of the standard model. We give examples of each class and discuss their possible embeddings into higher unified theories. One of the models has the interesting property that spontaneous CP violation is triggered by spontaneous P violation, thereby linking the scale of CP violation to the seesaw scale for neutrino masses.

Post--Sphaleron Baryogenesis

We present a new mechanism for generating the baryon asymmetry of the universe directly in the decay of a singlet scalar field $S_r$ with a weak scale mass and a high dimensional baryon number violating coupling. Unlike most currently popular models, this mechanism, which becomes effective after the electroweak phase transition, does not rely on the sphalerons for inducing a nonzero baryon number. CP asymmetry in $S_r$ decay arises through loop diagrams involving the exchange of $W^\pm$ gauge bosons, and is suppressed by light quark masses, leading naturally to a value of $η_B \sim 10^{-10}$. We show that the simplest realization of this mechanism, which uses a six quark $ΔB=2$ operator, predicts colored scalars accessible to the LHC, and neutron--antineutron oscillation within reach of the next generation experiments.
