Connecting bimaximal neutrino mixing to a light sterile neutrino

It is shown that if small neutrino masses owe their origin to the conventional seesaw mechanism and the MNS mixing matrix is in the exact bimaximal form, then there exist symmetries in the theory that allow one of the righthanded neutrinos to become naturally massless, making it a candidate for the sterile neutrino discussed in the literature. Departures from the exact bimaximal limit leads to tiny mass for the sterile neutrino as well as its mixing to the active neutrinos. This provides a minimal theoretical framework where a simultaneous explanation of the solar, atmospheric and LSND observations within the so-called 3+1 scenario may be possible.

Observable Neutron-Antineutron Oscillations in Seesaw Models of Neutrino Mass

We show that in a large class of supersymmetric models with spontaneously broken B-L symmetry, neutron--antineutron oscillations occur at an observable level even though the scale of B-L breaking is very high, v_{B-L} ~ 2 x 10^{16} GeV, as suggested by gauge coupling unification and neutrino masses. We illustrate this phenomenon in the context of a recently proposed class of seesaw models that solves the strong CP problem and the SUSY phase problem using parity symmetry. We obtain an upper limit on N-\bar{N} oscillation time in these models, τ_{N-\bar{N}} < 10^{9} -10^{10} sec. This suggests that a modest improvement in the current limit on τ_{N-\bar{N}} of 0.86 x 10^8 sec will either lead to the discovery of N-\bar{N} oscillations, or will considerably restrict the allowed parameter space of an interesting class of neutrino mass models.

Solving the Strong CP and the SUSY Phase Problems with Parity Symmetry

We propose a simultaneous solution to the strong CP problem and the SUSY phase problem based on parity symmetry realized when the supersymmetric standard model is embedded into a left-right symmetric framework at a scale near 2 x 10^{16} GeV, as suggested by neutrino masses and gauge coupling unification. In this class of models, owing to parity, SUSY contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment can be naturally large without conflicting with the EDM of the electron and the neutron. The strong CP violation parameter θis zero at the tree level, also due to parity (P), but is induced due to P-violating effects below the unification scale. We estimate the induced θto be < 10^{-16}, if we adopt a constrained supersymmetric spectrum with universal scalar masses. In the more general SUSY breaking scenario, after imposing flavor changing constraints, we find theta ~ (10^{-8}-10^{-10}), which is compatible with, but not much below the present limit on neutron EDM. We also argue that potential non-perturbative corrections to θfrom quantum gravitational effects are not excessive in these models.

A new fit to solar neutrino data in models with large extra dimensions

String inspired models with millimeter scale extra dimensions provide a natural way to understand an ultralight sterile neutrino needed for a simultaneous explanation of the solar, atmospheric and LSND neutrino oscillation results. The sterile neutrino is the bulk neutrino ($ν_B$) postulated to exist in these models, and it becomes ultralight in theories that prevent the appearance of its direct mass terms. Its Kaluza-Klein (KK) states then add new oscillation channels for the electron neutrino emitted from the solar core. We show that successive MSW transitions of solar $ν_e$ to the lower lying KK modes of $ν_B$ in conjunction with vacuum oscillations between the $ν_e$ and the zero mode of $ν_B$ provide a new way to fit the solar neutrino data. Using just the average rates from the three types of solar experiments, we predict the Super-Kamiokande spectrum with 73\% probability, but dips characteristic of the 0.06 mm extra dimension should be seen in the SNO spectrum. We discuss both intermediate and low string scale models where the desired phenomenology can emerge naturally.

Large Extra Dimensions, Sterile neutrinos and Solar Neutrino Data

Solar, atmospheric and LSND neutrino oscillation results require a light sterile neutrino, $ν_B$, which can exist in the bulk of extra dimensions. Solar $ν_e$, confined to the brane, can oscillate in the vacuum to the zero mode of $ν_B$ and via successive MSW transitions to Kaluza-Klein states of $ν_B$. This new way to fit solar data is provided by both low and intermediate string scale models. From average rates seen in the three types of solar experiments, the Super-Kamiokande spectrum is predicted with 73% probability, but dips characteristic of the 0.06 mm extra dimension should be seen in the SNO spectrum.

Prediction of $\sin^2θ_W$ in a Conformal Approach to Coupling Unification

The possibility that non-supersymmetric conformal field theories softly broken below 100 TeV may provide an alternative to conventional grand unification is explored. We consider a low energy theory presumed to be of this type arising from the Type IIB superstring compactified on a $AdS_5 \times S_5/Γ$ space whose gauge group and the particle content are severely restricted by the compactification process. We present an example of a resulting $SU(4)_c\times SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ with three generations, which leads to coupling unification and a prediction for $sin^2θ_W\simeq .227$ and other phenomenology generally consistent with observations.

Geometric CP Violation with Extra Dimensions

We discuss how CP symmetry can be broken geometrically through orbifold projections in hidden extra dimensions in the context of D-brane models for particle unifications. We present a few toy models to illustrate the idea and suggest ways to incorporate this technique in the context of realistic models.

Neutrinos, Large Extra Dimensions and Solar Neutrino Puzzle

A desirable feature of models with large extra dimensions and a TeV range string scale is the possibility to understand an ultralight sterile neutrino needed for a simultaneous understanding of solar, atmospheric and LSND results as a Kaluza-Klein state of a bulk neutrino. How these oscillation data are understood in quantitative detail is still not clear. We have recently suggested a new way to understand the solar neutrino data in this framework by a combination of vacuum and small angle MSW transition of $ν_e$ to sterile KK modes of the bulk neutrino. This mechanism can be embedded into an economical extension of the standard model in the brane to understand the atmospheric and LSND data. After a brief discussion of how small neutrino masses arise naturally in extra dimensional models, we review this new suggestion.

Large Neutrino Mixing from Renormalization Group Evolution

The renormalization group evolution equation for two neutrino mixing is known to exhibit nontrivial fixed point structure corresponding to maximal mixing at the weak scale. The presence of the fixed point provides a natural explanation of the observed maximal mixing of $ν_μ-ν_τ$ if the $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$ are assumed to be quasi-degenerate at the seesaw scale without constraining on the mixing angles at that scale. In particular, it allows them to be similar to the quark mixings as in generic grand unified theories. We discuss implementation of this program in the case of MSSM and find that the predicted mixing remains stable and close to its maximal value, for all energies below the $O$(TeV) SUSY scale. We also discuss how a particular realization of this idea can be tested in neutrinoless double beta decay experiments.

Inflation in Models with Large Extra Dimensions Driven by a Bulk Scalar Field

We discuss inflation in models with large extra dimensions, driven by a bulk scalar field. The brane inflaton is then a single effective field, obtained from the bulk scalar field by scaling. The self interaction terms of the effective brane inflaton are then naturally suppressed. The picture is consistent with a fundamental string scale in the TeV range without the problem of a superlight inflaton. If hybrid inflation is considered, the right prediction for the density perturbations as observed by COBE can be obtained without any fine tunning. The bulk inflaton then decays preferentially into brane Higgses and reheating follows.

Origin of neutrino masses and mixings

A brief overview of the important theoretical issues in neutrino physics is presented and some of the current ideas for addressing them in the framework of the seesaw mechanism of neutrino masses are discussed. Among the topics discussed are ways to understand maximal mixing pattern among the three neutrino species, both uni-maximal and bimaximal kinds. Constraints from baryogenesis on mixing patterns are noted. In the last section, the question of understanding the small masses for sterile neutrinos, which seem to be needed for various reasons is addressed.

Neutrino mass, bulk majoron and neutrinoless double beta decay

A new economical model for neutrino masses is proposed in the context of brane bulk scenarios for particle physics, where global B-L symmetry of the standard model is broken spontaneously by a gauge singlet Higgs field in the bulk. This leads to a bulk majoron whose KK excitations may make it visible if neutrinoless double beta decay if the string scale is close to a TeV. It also leads to neutron-anti-neutron oscillation process with transition times which can be in the range accessible to proposed experiments.

Three flavour neutrino oscillations in models with large extra dimensions

The key challenges for models with large extra dimensions, posed by neutrino physics are: first to understand why neutrino masses are small and second, whether one can have a simultaneous explanation of all observed oscillation phenomena. There exist models that answer the first challenge by using singlet bulk neutrinos coupled to the standard model in the brane. Our goal in this paper is to see to what extent the simplest versions of these models can answer the second challenge. Our conclusion is that the minimal framework that has no new physics beyond the above simple picture cannot simultaneously explain solar, atmospheric and LSND data, whereas there are several ways that it can accommodate the first two. This would suggest that confirmation of LSND data would indicate the existence of new physics either in the brane or in extra dimensions or both, if indeed it turns out that there are large extra dimensions.

Enhanced electric dipole moment of the muon in the presence of large neutrino mixing

The electric dipole moment of the muon (d_mu) is evaluated in supersymmetric models with nonzero neutrino masses and large neutrino mixing arising from the seesaw mechanism. It is found that if the seesaw mechanism is embedded in the framework of a left-right symmetric gauge structure, the interactions responsible for the right-handed neutrino Majorana masses lead to an enhancement in d_mu. We find d_mu as large as 5. 10^{-23} ecm with a correlated value of (g-2) = 13. 10^{-10}, even for low values of tan beta. This should provide a strong motivation for improving the edm of the muon to the level of 10^{-24} ecm as has recently been proposed.

Report of the Beyond the MSSM Subgroup for the Tevatron Run II SUSY/Higgs Workshop

There are many low-energy models of supersymmetry breaking parameters which are motivated by theoretical and experimental considerations. Here, we discuss some of the lesser-known theories of low-energy supersymmetry, and outline their phenomenological consequences. In some cases, these theories have more gauge symmetry or particle content than the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. In other cases, the parameters of the Lagrangian are unusual compared to commonly accepted norms (e.g., Wino LSP, heavy gluino LSP, light gluino, etc.). The phenomenology of supersymmetry varies greatly between the different models. Correspondingly, particular aspects of the detectors assume greater or lesser importance. Detection of supersymmetry and the determination of all parameters may well depend upon having the widest possible view of supersymmetry phenomenology.

We study the cosmology of models with four space and one time dimension where our universe is a 3-brane and report a few results which extend existing work in several directions. Assuming a stable fifth dimension, we obtain a solution for the metric, which does not depend on any arbitrary parameters. We discuss some implications of this result.

Mirror Dark Matter

There appear to be three challenges that any theory of dark matter must face: (i) why is $Ω_{DM}$ of the same order as $Ω_{Baryons}$ ? (ii) what are the near solar mass objects ($\sim 0.5 M_{\odot}$) observed by the MACHO microlensing project ? and (iii) understanding the shallow core density profile of the halos of dwarf as well as low surface brightness galaxies. The popular cold dark matter candidates, the SUSY LSP and the axion fail to meet these challenges. We argue that in the mirror model suggested recently to explain the neutrino anomalies, the mirror baryons being 15-20 times heavier than familiar baryons, can play the role of the cold dark matter and provide reasonable explanation of all three above properties without extra assumptions.
