Hamiltonian Theory of the Composite Fermion Wigner Crystal

Experimental results indicating the existence of the high magnetic field Wigner Crystal have been available for a number of years. While variational wavefunctions have demonstrated the instability of the Laughlin liquid to a Wigner Crystal at sufficiently small filling, calculations of the excitation gaps have been hampered by the strong correlations. Recently a new Hamiltonian formulation of the fractional quantum Hall problem has been developed. In this work we extend the Hamiltonian approach to include states of nonuniform density, and use it to compute the excitation gaps of the Wigner Crystal states. We find that the Wigner Crystal states near $ν=1/5$ are quantitatively well described as crystals of Composite Fermions with four vortices attached. Predictions for gaps and the shear modulus of the crystal are presented, and found to be in reasonable agreement with experiments.

Quantum Spectra and Wave Functions in Terms of Periodic Orbits for Weakly Chaotic Systems

Special quantum states exist which are quasiclassical quantizations of regions of phase space that are weakly chaotic. In a weakly chaotic region, the orbits are quite regular and remain in the region for some time before escaping and manifesting possible chaotic behavior. Such phase space regions are characterized as being close to periodic orbits of an integrable reference system. The states are often rather striking, and can be concentrated in spatial regions. This leads to possible phenomena. We review some methods we have introduced to characterize such regions and find analytic formulas for the special states and their energies.

Quasiclassical Born-Oppenheimer approximations

We discuss several problems in quasiclassical physics for which approximate solutions were recently obtained by a new method, and which can also be solved by novel versions of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. These cases include the so-called bouncing ball modes, low angular momentum states in perturbed circular billiards, resonant states in perturbed rectangular billiards, and whispering gallery modes. Some rare, special eigenstates, concentrated close to the edge or along a diagonal of a nearly rectangular billiard are found. This kind of state has apparently previously escaped notice.

Square billiard with a magnetic flux

Eigenstates and energy levels of a square quantum billiard in a magnetic field, or with an Aharonov-Bohm flux line, are found in quasiclassical approximation, that is, for high enough energy. Explicit formulas for the energy levels and wavefunctions are found. A number of interesting states are shown, together with their wavefunctions. Some states are diamagnetic, others paramagnetic, still others both dia- and paramagnetic. Some states are strongly localized. Related systems and possible experiments are briefly mentioned.

Localization by interference: Square billiard with a magnetic flux

Eigenstates and energy levels of a square quantum billiard in a magnetic field, or with an Aharonov-Bohm flux line, are found in quasiclassical approximation, that is, for high enough energy. Explicit formulas for the energy levels and wavefunctions are found. There are localized states, never before noticed in this well studied problem, whose localization is due to phase interference, even though there is no or negligible classical effect of the magnetic field. These and related states account almost entirely for the magnetic response in certain temperature ranges, and thus have a bearing on the experiments of Levy et al.

Trace Formulas and Bogomolny's Transfer Operator

The trace formulas commonly used in discussing spectral properties of quantum or wave systems are derived simply and directly from the Bogomolny transfer operator. Special cases are the Gutzwiller formula, the Berry-Tabor formula, and the perturbed Berry-Tabor formula. A comment is made about interpolation formulas proposed in the latter case.

Topological Features of the Magnetic Response in Inhomogeneous Magnetic Fields

We present topological features of the magnetic response (orbital and spin) of a two-dimensional degenerate and non interacting electron gas due to inhomogeneous applied magnetic fields. These issues are analysed from the point of view of the Index theory with a special emphasis on the non perturbative aspects of this response. The limiting case of a Aharonov-Bohm magnetic flux line is studied in details and the results are extended to more general situations.

Quasiclassical Surface of Section Perturbation Theory

Perturbation theory, the quasiclassical approximation and the quantum surface of section method are combined for the first time. This gives a new solution of the the long standing problem of quantizing the resonances generically appearing in classical perturbation theory. Our method is restricted to two dimensions. In that case, however, the results are simpler, more explicit and more easily expressed visually than the results of earlier techniques. The method involves expanding the `phase' of the wavefunction in powers of the square root of the small parameter. It gives explicit WKB-like wavefunctions and energies even for certain systems which classically show hard chaos.

Quasiclassical Surface of Section Perturbation Theory

Perturbation theory, the quasiclassical approximation and the quantum surface of section method are combined for the first time. This solves the long standing problem of quantizing the resonances and chaotic regions generically appearing in classical perturbation theory. The result is achieved by expanding the `phase' of the wavefunction in powers of the square root of the small parameter. It gives explicit WKB-like wavefunctions even for systems which classically show hard chaos. We also find analytic solutions to some questions raised recently.

Chiral boundary conditions for Quantum Hall systems

A quantum mesoscopic billiard can be viewed as a bounded electronic system due to some external confining potential. Since, in general, we do not have access to the exact expression of this potential, it is usually replaced by a set of boundary conditions. We discuss, in addition to the standard Dirichlet choice, the other possibilities of boundary conditions which might correspond to more complicated physical situations including the effects of many body interactions or of a strong magnetic field. The latter case is examined more in details using a new kind of chiral boundary conditions for which it is shown that in the Quantum Hall regime, bulk and edge characteristics can be described in a unified way.

Heat kernel of integrable billiards in a magnetic field

We present analytical methods to calculate the magnetic response of non-interacting electrons constrained to a domain with boundaries and submitted to a uniform magnetic field. Two different methods of calculation are considered - one involving the large energy asymptotic expansion of the resolvent (Stewartson-Waechter method) is applicable to the case of separable systems, and another based on the small time asymptotic behaviour of the heat kernel (Balian-Bloch method). Both methods are in agreement with each other but differ from the result obtained previously by Robnik. Finally, the Balian-Bloch multiple scattering expansion is studied and the extension of our results to other geometries is discussed.

Semi-classical spectrum of integrable systems in a magnetic field

The quantum dynamics of an electron in a uniform magnetic field is studied for geometries corresponding to integrable cases. We obtain the uniform asymptotic approximation of the WKB energies and wavefunctions for the semi-infinite plane and the disc. These analytical solutions are shown to be in excellent agreement with the numerical results obtained from the Schrodinger equations even for the lowest energy states. The classically exact notions of bulk and edge states are followed to their semi-classical limit, when the uniform approximation provides the connection between bulk and edge.

Boundary Conditions for Bulk and Edge States in Quantum Hall Systems

For two dimensional Schroedinger Hamiltonians we formulate boundary conditions that split the Hilbert space according to the chirality of the eigenstates on the boundary. With magnetic fields, and in particular, for Quantum Hall Systems, this splitting corresponds to edge and bulk states. Applications to the integer and fractional Hall effect and some open problems are described.
