Low-dimensional magnetism of BaCuTe$_{2}$O$_{6}$

X-ray diffraction, thermodynamic measurements, and density-functional band-structure calculations are used to study the magnetic behavior of BaCuTe$_{2}$O$_{6}$, a member of the $A$CuTe$_2$O$_6$ structural family that hosts complex three-dimensional frustrated spin networks with possible spin-liquid physics. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity of the Ba compound are well described by the one-dimensional spin-$\frac12$ Heisenberg chain model reminiscent of the Sr analog SrCuTe$_2$O$_6$. While the intrachain coupling $J/k_{\rm B}\simeq 37$ K is reduced compared to 49 K in the Sr compound, the Néel temperature increases from 5.5 K (Sr) to 6.1 K (Ba). Unlike the Sr compound, BaCuTe$_2$O$_6$ undergoes only one magnetic transition as a function of temperature and shows signatures of weak spin canting. We elucidate the microscopic difference between the Sr and Ba compounds and suggest that one of the interchain couplings changes sign as a result of negative pressure caused by the Sr/Ba substitution. The Néel temperature of BaCuTe$_2$O$_6$ is remarkably insensitive to the magnetic dilution with Zn$^{2+}$ up to the highest reachable level of about 20%.

Quasi-one-dimensional magnetism in the spin-$\frac12$ antiferromagnet BaNa$_{2}$Cu(VO$_{4}$)$_{2}$

We report synthesis and magnetic properties of quasi-one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain compound BaNa$_2$Cu(VO$_4$)$_2$. This orthovanadate has a centrosymmetric crystal structure, $C2/c$, where the magnetic Cu$^{2+}$ ions form spin chains. These chains are arranged in layers, with the chain direction changing by 62$^0$ between the two successive layers. Alternatively, the spin lattice can be viewed as anisotropic triangular layers upon taking the inter-chain interactions into consideration. Despite this potential structural complexity, temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, ESR intensity, and NMR shift agree well with the uniform spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg chain model with an intrachain coupling of $J/k_{\rm B} \simeq 5.6$ K. The saturation field obtained from the magnetic isotherm measurement consistently reproduces the value of $J/k_{\rm B}$. Further, the $^{51}$V NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate mimics the 1D character in the intermediate temperature range, whereas magnetic long-range order sets in below $T_{\rm N} \simeq 0.25$ K. The effective interchain coupling is estimated to be $J_{\perp}/k_{\rm B} \simeq 0.1$ K. The theoretical estimation of exchange couplings using band-structure calculations reciprocate our experimental findings and unambiguously establish the 1D character of the compound. Finally, the spin lattice of BaNa$_2$Cu(VO$_4$)$_2$ is compared with the chemically similar but not isostructural compound BaAg$_2$Cu(VO$_4)_2$.

Tayloring Bose-Einstein condensate environments for a Rydberg impurity

Experiments have demonstrated that atoms excited to specific Rydberg states within Bose-Einstein condensates cause significant excitation of phonons. If the Rydberg atom is brought into an electronic superposition state, this coupling to phonons leads to decoherence. We provide the theoretical basis for the treatment of the latter. To this end, we evaluate Rydberg-phonon coupling coefficients using a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. From these coefficients, we calculate bath correlation functions, spectral densities and re-organisation energies. All these quantify the influence of the environment and form essential inputs for follow up open quantum system techniques. We find that the amplitude of bath correlations scales like the power law $ν^{-5}$ with the principal quantum number $ν$, while re-organisation energies scale like $ν^{-3}$, reflecting the extreme tunability of Rydberg atomic properties. Rydberg impurities in condensates thus constitute a non-trivial open-quantum system with exceptionally controlled system, coupling and environmental Hamiltonians.

Unconventional superparamagnetic behavior in the modified cubic spinel compound LiNi$_{0.5}$Mn$_{1.5}$O$_{4}$

Structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of modified cubic spinel compound LiNi$_{0.5}$Mn$_{1.5}$O$_{4}$ are studied via x-ray diffraction, resistivity, DC and AC magnetization, heat capacity, neutron diffraction, $^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance, magnetocaloric effect, magnetic relaxation, and magnetic memory effect experiments. We stabilized this compound in a cubic structure with space group $P4_{3}32$. It exhibits semiconducting character with an electronic band gap of $Δ/k_{\rm B} \simeq 0.4$ eV. The interaction within each Mn$^{4+}$ and Ni$^{2+}$ sub-lattice and between Mn$^{4+}$ and Ni$^{2+}$ sublattices is found to be ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM), respectively which leads to the onset of a ferrimagnetic transition at $T_{\rm C} \simeq 125$~K. The reduced values of frustration parameter ($f$) and ordered moments reflect magnetic frustration due to competing FM and AFM interactions. From the $^7$Li NMR shift vs susceptibility plot, the average hyperfine coupling between $^7$Li nuclei and Ni$^{2+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ spins is calculated to be $\sim 672.4$~Oe/$μ_{\rm B}$. A detailed critical behaviour study is done in the vicinity of $T_{\rm C}$ using modified-Arrott plot, Kouvel-Fisher plot, and universal scaling of magnetization isotherms. The estimated critical exponents correspond to the 3D XY universality class. A large magneto-caloric effect is observed with a maximum isothermal change in entropy $ΔS_m \simeq - 11.3$~J/Kg-K and a maximum relative cooling power $RCP \simeq 604$~J/Kg for 9~T magnetic field change. The imaginary part of the AC susceptibility depicts a strong frequency dependent hump at $T=T_{\rm f2}$ well below the blocking temperature $T_{\rm b}\simeq120$~K. The Arrhenius behaviour of frequency dependent $T_{\rm f2}$ and the absence of ZFC memory confirm the existence of superparamagnetism in the ferrimagnetically ordered state.

Quasi two-dimensional magnetism in spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ square lattice compound Cu[C$_6$H$_2$(COO)$_4$][H$_3$N-(CH$_2$)$_2$-NH$_3$]$\cdot$3H$_2$O

We report the crystal growth and structural and magnetic properties of quasi two-dimensional $S=1/2$ quantum magnet Cu[C$_6$H$_2$(COO)$_4$][H$_3$N-(CH$_2$)$_2$-NH$_3$]$\cdot$3H$_2$O. It is found to crystallize in a monoclinic structure with space group $C2/m$. The CuO$_4$ plaquettes are connected into a two-dimensional framework in the $ab$-plane through the anions of [C$_6$H$_2$(COO)$_4$]$^{4-}$ (pyromellitic acid). The [H$_3$N-(CH$_2$)$_2$-NH$_3$]$^{2+}$$\cdot$3H$_2$O groups are located between the layers and provide a weak interlayer connection via hydrogen (H...O) bonds. The temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility is well described by $S=1/2$ frustrated square lattice ($J_1-J_2$) model with nearest-neighbor interaction $J_1/k_{\rm B} \simeq 5.35$ K and next-nearest-neighbor interaction $J_2/k_{\rm B} \simeq -0.01$ K. Even, our analysis using frustrated rectangular lattice ($J_{1a,b}-J_2$) model confirms almost isotropic nearest-neighbour interactions ($J_{\rm 1a}/k_{\rm B} \simeq 5.31$ K and $J_{\rm 1b}/k_{\rm B} \simeq 5.38$ K) in the $ab$-plane and $J_2/k_{\rm B}\simeq-0.24$ K. Further, the isothermal magnetization at $T=1.9$ K is also well described by a non-frustrated square lattice model with $J_1/k_{\rm B} \simeq 5.2$ K. Based on the $J_2/J_1$ ratio, the compound can be placed in the Néel antiferromagnetic state of the $J_1 - J_2$ phase diagram. No signature of magnetic long-range-order was detected down to 2 K.

Two types of alternating spin-$\frac12$ chains and their field-induced transitions in $\varepsilon$-LiVOPO$_4$

Thermodynamic properties, $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements, and density-functional band-structure calculations for $\varepsilon$-LiVOPO$_4$ are reported. This quantum magnet features a singlet ground state and comprises two types of alternating spin-$\frac12$ chains that manifest themselves by the double maxima in the susceptibility and magnetic specific heat, and by the two-step magnetization process with an intermediate $\frac12$-plateau. From thermodynamic data and band-structure calculations, we estimate the leading couplings of $J_1\simeq 20$ K and $J_2\simeq 60$ K and the alternation ratios of $α_1=J_1'/J_1\simeq 0.6$ and $α_2=J_2'/J_2\simeq 0.3$ within the two chains, respectively. The zero-field spin gap $Δ_0/k_{\rm B}\simeq 7.3$ K probed by thermodynamic and NMR measurements is caused by the $J_1$-$J_1'$ spin chains and can be closed in the applied field of $μ_{0}H_{\rm c1}\simeq 5.6$ T, giving rise to a field-induced long-range order. The NMR data reveal predominant three-dimensional spin-spin correlations at low temperatures. Field-induced magnetic ordering transition observed above $H_{c1}$ is attributed to the Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons in the sublattice formed by the $J_1$-$J_1'$ chains with weaker exchange couplings.

Critical behavior and magnetocaloric effect across the magnetic transition in Mn$_{1+x}$Fe$_{4-x}$Si$_{3}$

The nature of the magnetic transition, critical scaling of magnetization, and magnetocaloric effect in Mn$_{1+x}$Fe$_{4-x}$Si$_{3}$ ($ x =$ 0 to 1) are studied in detail. Our measurements show no thermal hysteresis across the magnetic transition for the parent compound which is in contrast with the previous report and corroborate the second order nature of the transition. The magnetic transition could be tuned continuously with Mn substitution at the Fe site. The Mn substitution leads to a linear increase in the unit cell volume and a slight reduction in the effective moment. A detailed critical analysis of the magnetization data for $x = 0.0$ and 0.2 is performed in the critical regime using the modified Arrott plots, Kouvel-Fisher plot, universal curve scaling, and scaling analysis of magnetocaloric effect. The magnetization isotherms follow modified Arrott plots with critical exponent ($β\simeq 0.308$, $γ\simeq 1.448$, and $δ\simeq 5.64$) for the parent compound ($x=0.0$) and ($β\simeq 0.304$, $γ\simeq 1.445$, and $δ\simeq 5.64$) for $x = 0.2$. The Kouvel-Fisher and universal scaling plots of the magnetization isotherms further confirm the reliability of our critical analysis and values of the exponents. These values of the critical exponents are found to be same for both the parent and doped samples which do not fall under any of the standard universality classes. A reasonable magnetocaloric effect $ΔS_{\rm m}\simeq-6.67$~J/Kg-K and -5.84~J/Kg-K for $x= 0.0$ and 0.2 compounds, respectively, with a huge relative cooling power ($RCP \sim 700$~J/Kg) for 9~T field change is observed. The universal scaling of magnetocaloric effect further mimics the second order character of the magnetic transition. The obtained critical exponents from the critical analysis of magnetocaloric effect agree with the values deduced from the magnetic isotherm analysis.

Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons close to the quantum critical point in the quasi-one-dimensional spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnet NaVOPO$_4$

Structural and magnetic properties of a quasi-one-dimensional spin-$1/2$ compound NaVOPO$_4$ are explored by x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, specific heat, electron spin resonance, and $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance measurements, as well as complementary \textit{ab initio} calculations. Whereas magnetic susceptibility of NaVOPO$_4$ may be compatible with the gapless uniform spin chain model, detailed examination of the crystal structure reveals a weak alternation of the exchange couplings with the alternation ratio $α\simeq 0.98$ and the ensuing zero-field spin gap $Δ_{0}/k_{\rm B} \simeq 2.4$~K directly probed by field-dependent magnetization measurements. No long-range order is observed down to 50\,mK in zero field. However, applied fields above the critical field $H_{c1}\simeq 1.6$\,T give rise to a magnetic ordering transition with the phase boundary $T_{\rm N} \propto {(H - H_{\rm c1})^{\frac{1}ϕ}}$, where $ϕ\simeq 1.8$ is close to the value expected for Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons. With its weak alternation of the exchange couplings and small spin gap, NaVOPO$_4$ lies close to the quantum critical point.

A case study of bilayered spin-$1/2$ square lattice compound [VO(HCOO)$_2\cdot$(H$_2$O)]

We present the synthesis and a detail investigation of structural and magnetic properties of polycrystalline [VO(HCOO)$_2\cdot$(H$_2$O)] by means of x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, heat capacity, and electron spin resonance measurements. It crystallizes in a orthorhombic structure with space group $Pcca$. It features distorted VO$_6$ octahedra connected via HCOO linker (formate anions) forming a two-dimensional square lattice network with a bilayered structure. Analysis of magnetic susceptibility, high field magnetization, and heat capacity data in terms of the frustrated square lattice model unambiguously establish quasi-two-dimensional nature of the compound with nearest neighbour interaction $J_1/k_{\rm B} \simeq 11.7$~K and next-nearest-neighbour interaction $J_2/k_{\rm B} \simeq 0.02$~K. It undergoes a Néel antiferromagnetic ordering at $T_{\rm N} \simeq 1.1$~K. The ratio $θ_{\rm CW}/T_{\rm N} \simeq 10.9$ reflects excellent two-dimensionality of the spin-lattice in the compound. A strong in-plane anisotropy is inferred from the linear increase of $T_{\rm N}$ with magnetic field, consistent with the structural data.

Singlet ground state in the alternating spin-$1/2$ chain compound NaVOAsO$_4$

We present the synthesis and a detailed investigation of structural and magnetic properties of polycrystalline NaVOAsO$_4$ by means of x-ray diffraction, magnetization, electron spin resonance (ESR), and $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements as well as density-functional band structure calculations. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, ESR intensity, and NMR line shift could be described well using an alternating spin-$1/2$ chain model with the exchange coupling $J/k_{\rm B}\simeq 52$ K and an alternation parameter $α\simeq 0.65$. From the high-field magnetic isotherm measured at $T=1.5 $ K, the critical field of the gap closing is found to be $ H_{\rm c}\simeq 16$ T, which corresponds to the zero-field spin gap of $Δ_0/k_{\rm B}\simeq 21.4$ K. Both NMR shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate show an activated behavior at low temperatures, further confirming the singlet ground state. The spin chains do not coincide with the structural chains, whereas the couplings between the spin chains are frustrated. Because of a relatively small spin gap, NaVOAsO$_4$ is a promising compound for further experimental studies under high magnetic fields.

Cluster spin-glass behaviour and memory effect in Cr$_{0.5}$Fe$_{0.5}$Ga

We report the structural, static, and dynamic properties of Cr$_{0.5}$Fe$_{0.5}$Ga by means of powder x-ray diffraction, magnetization, heat capacity, magnetic relaxation, and magnetic memory effect measurements. DC magnetization and AC susceptibility studies reveal a spin-glass transition at around $T_{\rm f} \simeq 22$~K. An intermediate value of the relative shift in freezing temperature $δT_{\rm f} \simeq 0.017$, obtained from the AC susceptibility data reflects the formation of cluster spin-glass states. The frequency dependence of $T_{\rm f}$ is also analyzed within the framework of dynamic scaling laws. The analysis using power law yields a time constant for a single spin flip $τ* \simeq 1.1\times10^{-10}$~s and critical exponent $zν^{\prime}=4.2\pm0.2$. On the other hand, the Vogel-Fulcher (VF) law yields the time constant for a single spin flip $τ_0 \simeq 6.6\times10^{-9}$~s, VF temperature $T_{\rm 0}=21.1\pm0.1$~K, and an activation energy $E_{\rm a}/k_{\rm B} \simeq 16$~K. The value of $τ*$ and $τ_0$ along with a non-zero value of $T_{\rm 0}$ provide further evidence for the cluster spin-glass behaviour. The magnetic field dependent $T_{\rm f}$ follows the de Almeida-Thouless line with a non-mean-field type instability, reflecting either a different universality class or strong anisotropy in the spin system. A detailed non-equilibrium dynamics study via relaxation and memory effect experiments demonstrates striking memory effects. All the above observations render a cluster spin-glass behaviour which is triggered by magnetic frustration due to competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions and magnetic site disorder. Moreover, the asymmetric response of magnetic relaxation with respect to the change in temperature, below $T_{\rm f}$ can be explained by the hierarchical model.

Frustration of square cupola in Sr(TiO)Cu$_{4}$(PO$_{4}$)$_{4}$

The structural and magnetic properties of the square-cupola antiferromagnet Sr(TiO)Cu$_{4}$(PO$_{4}$)$_{4}$ are investigated via x-ray diffraction, magnetization, heat capacity, and $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance experiments on polycrystalline samples, as well as density-functional band-structure calculations. The temperature-dependent unit cell volume could be described well using the Debye approximation with the Debye temperature of $θ_{\rm D} \simeq $ 550~K. Magnetic response reveals a pronounced two-dimensionality with a magnetic long-range-order below $T_{\rm N} \simeq 6.2$~K. High-field magnetization exhibits a kink at $1/3$ of the saturation magnetization. Asymmetric $^{31}$P NMR spectra clearly suggest strong in-plane anisotropy in the magnetic susceptibility, as anticipated from the crystal structure. From the $^{31}$P NMR shift vs bulk susceptibility plot, the isotropic and axial parts of the hyperfine coupling between $^{31}$P nuclei and the Cu$^{2+}$ spins are calculated to be $A_{\rm hf}^{\rm iso} \simeq 6539$ and $A_{\rm hf}^{\rm ax} \simeq 952$~Oe/$μ_{\rm B}$, respectively. The low-temperature and low-field $^{31}$P NMR spectra indicate a commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering. Frustrated nature of the compound is inferred from the temperature-dependent $^{31}$P NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate and confirmed by our microscopic analysis that reveals strong frustration of the square cupola by next-nearest-neighbor exchange couplings.

Coupled magnetic and ferroelectric states in the distorted honeycomb system Fe$_{4}$Ta$_{2}$O$_{9}$

We report on the magnetic, thermodynamic, dielectric, and pyroelectric measurements on the hitherto unreported Fe${_4}$Ta${_2}$O${_9}$. This system is seen to exhibit a series of magnetic transitions, many of which are coupled to the emergence of ferroelectric order, making Fe${_4}$Ta${_2}$O${_9}$ the only genuine multiferroic in its material class. We suggest that the observed properties arise as a consequence of an effective reduction in the dimensionality of the magnetic lattice, with the magnetically active Fe${^{2+}}$ ions preferentially occupying a quasi 2D buckled honeycomb structure. The low temperature $H$-$T$ phase diagram of Fe${_4}$Ta${_2}$O${_9}$ reveals a rich variety of coupled magnetic and ferroelectric phases, in similarity with that observed in the distorted Kagome systems.

First order magneto-structural transition and magnetocaloric effect in MnNiGe$_{0.9}$Ga$_{0.1}$

The first order magneto-structural transition ($T_t\simeq95$ K) and magnetocaloric effect in MnNiGe$_{0.9}$Ga$_{0.1}$ are studied via powder x-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements. Temperature dependent x-ray diffraction measurements reveal that the magneto-structural transition remains incomplete down to 23 K, resulting in a coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases at low temperatures. The fraction of the high temperature Ni$_2$In-type hexagonal ferromagnetic and low temperature TiNiSi-type orthorhombic antiferromagnetic phases is estimated to be $\sim 40\%$ and $\sim 60\%$, respectively at 23 K. The ferromagnetic phase fraction increases with increasing field which is found to be in non-equilibrium state and gives rise to a weak re-entrant transition while warming under field-cooled condition. It shows a large inverse magnetocaloric effect across the magneto-structural transition and a conventional magnetocaloric effect across the second order paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition. The relative cooling power which characterizes the performance of a magnetic refrigerant material is found to be reasonably high compared to the other reported magnetocaloric alloys.

Singlet ground state in the spin-$1/2$ weakly coupled dimer compound NH$_4$[(V$_2$O$_3$)$_2$(4,4$^\prime$-$bpy$)$_2$(H$_2$PO$_4$)(PO$_4$)$_2$]$\cdot$0.5H$_2$O

We present the synthesis and a detailed investigation of structural and magnetic properties of polycrystalline NH$_4$[(V$_2$O$_3$)$_2$(4,4$^\prime$-$bpy$)$_2$(H$_2$PO$_4$)(PO$_4$)$_2$]$\cdot$0.5H$_2$O by means of x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, electron spin resonance, and $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. Temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility could be described well using a weakly coupled spin-$1/2$ dimer model with an excitation gap $Δ/k_{\rm B}\simeq 26.1$ K between the singlet ground state and triplet excited states and a weak inter-dimer exchange coupling $J^\prime/k_{\rm B} \simeq 4.6$ K. A gapped chain model also describes the data well with a gap of about 20 K. The ESR intensity as a function of temperature traces the bulk susceptibility nicely. The isotropic Land$\acute{\rm e}$ $g$-factor is estimated to be about $g \simeq 1.97$, at room temperature. We are able to resolve the $^{31}$P NMR signal as coming from two inequivalent P-sites in the crystal structure. The hyperfine coupling constant between $^{31}$P nucleus and V$^{4+}$ spins is calculated to be $A_{\rm hf}(1) \simeq 2963$ Oe/$μ_{\rm B}$ and $A_{\rm hf}(2) \simeq 1466$ Oe/$μ_{\rm B}$ for the P(1) and P(2) sites, respectively. Our NMR shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate for both the $^{31}$P sites show an activated behaviour at low temperatures, further confirming the singlet ground state. The estimated value of the spin gap from the NMR data measured in an applied field of $H = 9.394$ T is consistent with the gap obtained from the magnetic susceptibility analysis using the dimer model. Because of a relatively small spin gap, NH$_4$[(V$_2$O$_3$)$_2$(4,4$^\prime$-$bpy$)$_2$(H$_2$PO$_4$)(PO$_4$)$_2$]$\cdot$0.5H$_2$O is a promising compound for further experimental studies under high magnetic fields.

Structural and magnetic properties of spin-$1/2$ dimer compound Cu$_2$(IPA)$_2$(DMF)(H$_2$O) with a large spin gap

We present the synthesis and a detailed investigation of structural and magnetic properties of metal-organic compound Cu$_2$(IPA)$_2$(DMF)(H$_2$O) by means of x-ray diffraction, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements. Single crystals of the title compound were synthesized by judicious selection of organic ligand and employing a selective hydrothermal reaction route. It crystallizes in an orthorhombic structure with space group $Cmca$. The structural analysis revealed that two Cu$^{2+}$ ions are held together by the organic component (-O-C-O-) in a square paddle-wheel to form spin dimers which are aligned perpendicular to each other and are further coupled through organic ligands (isophthalic acid) forming two-dimensional layers. Temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ could be described well using spin-$1/2$ dimer model. The spin susceptibility $χ_{\rm spin} (T)$ shows an exponential decrease in the low temperature region, below the broad maximum, confirming the singlet ground state with a large spin gap of $Δ/k_{\rm B} \simeq 409$~K. The heat capacity $C_{\rm p}$ measured as a function of temperature also confirms the absence of magnetic long-range-order down to 2~K.

Double phase transition in the triangular antiferromagnet Ba$_3$CoTa$_2$O$_9$

Here, we report the synthesis and magnetic properties of a new triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_3$CoTa$_2$O$_9$. The effective spin of Co$^{2+}$ is found to be $J=1/2$ at low temperatures due to the combined effect of crystal field and spin-orbit coupling. Ba$_3$CoTa$_2$O$_9$ undergoes two successive magnetic phase transitions at $T_{N1}\simeq0.70$~K and $T_{N2}\simeq0.57$~K in zero applied field, which is typical for triangular antiferromagnets with the easy-axis magnetic anisotropy. With increasing field, the transition anomalies are found to shift toward low temperatures, confirming the antiferromagnetic nature of the transitions. At higher fields, the transition peaks in the heat capacity data disappear and give way to a broad maximum, which can be ascribed to a Schottky anomaly due to the Zeeman splitting of spin levels. The $H-T$ phase diagram of the compound shows three distinct phases. The possible nature of these phases is discussed.

Commensurate and incommensurate magnetic order in spin-1 chains stacked on the triangular lattice in Li$_2$NiW$_2$O$_8$

We report thermodynamic properties, magnetic ground state, and microscopic magnetic model of the spin-1 frustrated antiferromaget Li$_{2}$NiW$_{2}$O$_{8}$ showing successive transitions at $T_{\rm N1}\simeq 18$ K and $T_{\rm N2}\simeq 12.5$ K in zero field. Nuclear magnetic resonance and neutron diffraction reveal collinear and commensurate magnetic order with the propagation vector $\mathbf k=(\frac12,0,\frac12)$ below $T_{\rm N2}$. The ordered moment of 1.8 $μ_B$ at 1.5 K is directed along $[0.89(9),-0.10(5),-0.49(6)]$ and matches the magnetic easy axis of spin-1 Ni$^{2+}$ ions, which is determined by the scissor-like distortion of the NiO$_6$ octahedra. Incommensurate magnetic order, presumably of spin-density-wave type, is observed in the region between $T_{\rm N2}$ and $T_{\rm N1}$. Density-functional band-structure calculations put forward a three-dimensional spin lattice with spin-1 chains running along the $[01\bar 1]$ direction and stacked on a spatially anisotropic triangular lattice in the $ab$ plane. We show that the collinear magnetic order in Li$_2$NiW$_2$O$_8$ is incompatible with the triangular lattice geometry and thus driven by a pronounced easy-axis single-ion anisotropy of Ni$^{2+}$.
