Chemical composition and kinematics of ionised gas in low-mass star-forming galaxies with extremely high [OIII]/[OII] ratios

We present Very Large Telescope/Xshooter spectrophotometric observations of eleven low-redshift (z<0.085) compact star-forming galaxies (`high O32 sample'). These galaxies are characterised by extremely high emission-line ratios [OIII]$λ$5007/[OII]3727, ranging from 11 to 42. Galaxies with such high ratios are thought to be promising candidates for leaking large amounts of Lyman continuum radiation. They are characterized by low oxygen abundances 12+log(O/H)\,=7.5-8.0 and low stellar masses M*~10^6-10^8 Msun. Strong emission lines of various ions in all spectra are used to derive helium and oxygen abundances, and N/O, Ne/O, S/O, Cl/O, Ar/O and Fe/O abundance ratios. We also derived macroscopic velocity dispersions sigma(lambda) from various emission lines of different ions. We find that sigma(4861) of the Hbeta emission line is increased with increasing stellar mass and decreasing O32 ratio. On the other hand, sigma(lambda)/sigma(4861) ratios for various lines are close to 1. Exceptions are sigma(lambda)/sigma(4861) of two lines, HeII 4686 and HeI 10830, which are considerably higher than unity and of four lines, [OII] 3726,3729, [SII] 6717,6731, with sigma(lambda)/sigma(4861) lower than unity. The two former lines are likely produced in the inner parts of HII regions and are broadened by dynamical processes generated by massive stars, and by radiative scattering in the case of the HeI 10830 emission line. Emission in the four latter lines is produced mainly in the outer and likely more quiet parts of HII regions.

Pushing JWST to the extremes: search and scrutiny of bright galaxy candidates at z$\simeq$15-30

We designed customized Lyman-break color selection techniques to identify galaxy candidates in the redshift ranges $15 \leq z \leq 20$ and $20 \leq z \leq 28$. The selection was performed on the ASTRODEEP-JWST multi-band catalogs of the CEERS, Abell-2744, JADES, NGDEEP, and PRIMER survey fields, covering a total area of $\sim0.2$ sq. deg. We identify five candidates at $15 \leq z \leq 20$, while no objects are found based on the $z\gtrsim20$ color selection criteria. Despite exhibiting a $>$1.5 mag break, all the objects display multimodal redshift probability distributions across different SED-fitting codes and methodologies. The alternative solutions correspond to poorly understood populations of low-mass quiescent or dusty galaxies at z$\sim$3-7. This conclusion is supported by the analysis of five F200W-dropout objects that we find to be interlopers on the basis of NIRSpec PRISM spectra: four dusty star-forming galaxies at z$\sim$2.2-6.6, and a passive galaxy at z=4.91 with log$(M_{\rm star}/{\rm M}_{\odot}) \lesssim$ 9. We measured the UV luminosity function under different assumptions on the contamination level within our sample. We find that if even a fraction of the candidates is indeed at $z\gtrsim15$, the resulting UV LF points to a very mild evolution compared to estimates at $z<15$, implying a significant tension with existing theoretical models. In particular, confirming our bright ($M_{\text{UV}}<-21$) candidates would require substantial revisions to the theoretical framework. In turn, if all these candidates will be confirmed to be interlopers, we conclude that future surveys may need ten times wider areas to select $M_{\text{UV}}\lesssim-20$ galaxies at $z>15$. Observations in the F150W and F200W filters at depths comparable to those in the NIRCam LW bands are also required to mitigate contamination from rare red objects at z$\lesssim$8.

The ALMA-ALPINE [CII] survey: Kennicutt-Schmidt relation in four massive main-sequence galaxies at z~4.5

The Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation between the gas and the star formation rate (SFR) surface density ($Σ_{\rm gas}$-$Σ_{\rm SFR}$) is essential to understand star formation processes in galaxies. So far, it has been measured up to z~2.5 in main-sequence galaxies. In this letter, we aim to put constraints at z~4.5 using a sample of four massive main-sequence galaxies observed by ALMA at high resolution. We obtained ~0.3"-resolution [CII] and continuum maps of our objects, which we then converted into gas and obscured SFR surface density maps. In addition, we produced unobscured SFR surface density maps by convolving Hubble ancillary data in the rest-frame UV. We then derived the average $Σ_{\rm SFR}$ in various $Σ_{\rm gas}$ bins, and estimated the uncertainties using a Monte Carlo sampling. Our galaxy sample follows the KS relation measured in main-sequence galaxies at lower redshift and is slightly lower than predictions from simulations. Our data points probe the high end both in terms of $Σ_{\rm gas}$ and $Σ_{\rm gas}$, and gas depletion timescales (285-843 Myr) remain similar to z~2 objects. However, three of our objects are clearly morphologically disturbed, and we could have expected shorter gas depletion timescales (~100 Myr) similar to merger-driven starbursts at lower redshifts. This suggests that the mechanisms triggering starbursts at high redshift may be different than in the low- and intermediate-z Universe.
