Semiclassical Wigner distribution for two-mode entangled state

We derive the steady state solution of the Fokker-Planck equation that describes the dynamics of the nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator in the truncated Wigner representation of the density operator. We assume that the pump mode is strongly damped, which permits its adiabatic elimination. When the elimination is correctly executed, the resulting stochastic equations contain multiplicative noise terms, and do not admit a potential solution. However, we develop an heuristic scheme leading to a satisfactory steady-state solution. This provides a clear view of the intracavity two-mode entangled state valid in all operating regimes of the OPO. A nongaussian distribution is obtained for the above threshold solution.

Lyapunov exponent of the random frequency oscillator: cumulant expansion approach

We consider a one-dimensional harmonic oscillator with a random frequency, focusing on both the standard and the generalized Lyapunov exponents, $λ$ and $λ^\star$ respectively. We discuss the numerical difficulties that arise in the numerical calculation of $λ^\star$ in the case of strong intermittency. When the frequency corresponds to a Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, we compute analytically $λ^\star$ by using a cumulant expansion including up to the fourth order. Connections with the problem of finding an analytical estimate for the largest Lyapunov exponent of a many-body system with smooth interactions are discussed.

Semiclassical Description of Wavepacket Revival

We test the ability of semiclassical theory to describe quantitatively the revival of quantum wavepackets --a long time phenomena-- in the one dimensional quartic oscillator (a Kerr type Hamiltonian). Two semiclassical theories are considered: time-dependent WKB and Van Vleck propagation. We show that both approaches describe with impressive accuracy the autocorrelation function and wavefunction up to times longer than the revival time. Moreover, in the Van Vleck approach, we can show analytically that the range of agreement extends to arbitrary long times.

Semiclassical Wigner distribution for two-mode entangled state generated by an optical parametric oscillator

We derive the steady state solution of the Fokker-Planck equation that describes the dynamics of the nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator in the truncated Wigner representation of the density operator. The adiabatic limit of strong pump damping is assumed. This phase space image provides a clear view of the intracavity two-mode entangled state valid in all operating regimes of the OPO. A nongaussian distribution is obtained for the above threshold solution.

Measuring the Lyapunov exponent using quantum mechanics

We study the time evolution of two wave packets prepared at the same initial state, but evolving under slightly different Hamiltonians. For chaotic systems, we determine the circumstances that lead to an exponential decay with time of the wave packet overlap function. We show that for sufficiently weak perturbations, the exponential decay follows a Fermi golden rule, while by making the difference between the two Hamiltonians larger, the characteristic exponential decay time becomes the Lyapunov exponent of the classical system. We illustrate our theoretical findings by investigating numerically the overlap decay function of a two-dimensional dynamical system.

Thermodynamical fingerprints of fractal spectra

We investigate the thermodynamics of model systems exhibiting two-scale fractal spectra. In particular, we present both analytical and numerical studies on the temperature dependence of the vibrational and electronic specific heats. For phonons, and for bosons in general, we show that the average specific heat can be associated to the average (power law) density of states. The corrections to this average behavior are log-periodic oscillations which can be traced back to the self-similarity of the spectral staircase. In the electronic case, even if the thermodynamical quantities exhibit a strong dependence on the particle number, regularities arise when special cases are considered. Applications to substitutional and hierarchical structures are discussed.

Connection between energy-spectrum self-similarity and specific heat log-periodicity

As a first step towards the understanding of the thermodynamical properties of quasiperiodic structures, we have performed both analytical and numerical calculations associated with succesive hierarchical approximations to multiscale fractal energy spectra. We show that, in a certain range of temperatures, the specific heat displays log-periodic oscillations as a function of the temperature. We exhibit scaling arguments that allow for relating the mean value as well as the amplitude and period of the oscillations to the characteristic scales of the spectrum.

Quantum time-delay in chaotic scattering: a semiclassical approach

We study the universal fluctuations of the Wigner-Smith time delay for systems which exhibit chaotic dynamics in their classical limit. We present a new derivation of the semiclassical relation of the quantum time delay to properties of the set of trapped periodic orbits in the repeller. As an application, we calculate the energy correlator in the crossover regime between preserved and fully broken time reversal symmetry. We discuss the range of validity of our results and compare them with the predictions of random matrix theories.

Boundary contributions to the semiclassical traces of the baker's map

We evaluate the leading asymptotic contributions to the traces of the quantum baker's map propagator. Besides the usual Gutzwiller periodic orbit contribution, we identify boundary paths giving rise to anomalous log(hbar) terms. Some examples of these anomalous terms are calculated both numerically and analytically.
