Magnetism and exchange bias properties in Ba$_{2}$ScRuO$_{6}$

This paper presents structural, detailed magnetic, and exchange bias studies in polycrystalline Ba$_{2}$ScRuO$_{6}$ synthesized at ambient pressure. In contrast to its strontium analogue, this material crystallizes in a 6L hexagonal structure with the space group P$\overline{3}$m1. The Rietveld refinement using the room-temperature powder X-ray diffraction pattern suggests a Ru-Sc disorder in the structure. The temperature variation of the dc-electrical resistivity highlights a semiconducting behaviour with the electron conduction corresponding to the Mott 3D-VRH model. Detailed magnetization measurements show that Ba$_{2}$ScRuO$_{6}$ develops antiferromagnetic ordering at T$_{N}$ $\approx$ 9 K. Interestingly, below 9 K (T$_{N}$), the field cooled (FC) magnetic field variation of the magnetization curves highlights exchange bias effect in the sample. The exchange bias field reaches a maximum value of 1.24 kOe at 2 K. The exchange bias effect below the magnetic ordering temperature can be attributed to inhomogeneous magnetic correlations owing to the disorder in the structure.

Room Temperature Ferrimagnetism, Magnetodielectric and Exchange Bias Effect in CoFeRhO$_4$

Geometrically frustrated structures combined with competing exchange interactions that have different magnitudes are known ingredients for achieving exotic properties. Herein, we studied detailed structural, magnetic, thermal (specific heat), magneto-dielectric, and magnetic exchange bias properties of a mixed 3d - 4d spinel oxide with composition CoFeRhO$_4$. Detailed magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron powder diffraction studies (NPD) highlight long-range ferrimagnetic ordering with an onset at 355 K. The magnetic structure is established using a ferrimagnetic model (collinear-type) that has a propagation vector k = 0, 0, 0. The magneto-dielectric effect appears below the magnetic ordering temperature, and the exchange bias (EB) effect is observed in field cooled (FC) conditions below 355 K. The magneto-dielectric coupling in CoFeRhO$_4$ originates due to the frustration in the structure, collinear ferrimagnetic ordering, and uncompensated magnetic moments. The unidirectional anisotropy resulting from the uncompensated magnetic moments causes the room-temperature exchange bias effect. Remarkably, the appearance of technologically important properties (ferromagnetism, magnetodielectric effect, and EB) at room temperature in CoFeRhO$_4$ indicates its potential use in sensors or spintronics.

Planar Hall effect and quasi-2D anisotropic superconductivity in topological candidate 1$T$-NbSeTe

Superconducting topological materials have generated considerable interest in condensed matter research due to their unusual gap structures and topological properties. In this study, we have investigated the normal and superconducting characteristics of a potential topological semimetal 1$T$-NbSeTe through comprehensive transport and magnetization measurements on bulk single crystals. The results suggest the topological semimetallic nature of NbSeTe, evidenced by the observation of the planar Hall effect. Moreover, it displays quasi-2D anisotropic superconductivity, which breaks the Pauli limit. The coexistence of the topological semimetallic nature and superconductivity in NbSeTe makes it a potential contender for topological superconductivity.

Coexisting single-particle excitations and octupole correlations in transitional nucleus $\mathbf{^{217}Ra}$

The level structure of the transitional nucleus $\mathrm{^{217}Ra}$ has been extended with the addition of around 20 new transitions. The discrepancies between the placements of several transitions reported in the earlier studies are resolved. The newly-established negative-parity sequence at low excitation energies hints at the expected parity-doublet structures in this nucleus. The properties of the observed simplex bands are compared with that of similar bands in neighboring nuclei. Since the presence of parity-doublet structures reflect octupole correlations, theoretical calculations using reflection-asymmetric triaxial particle rotor model (RAT-PRM) have been performed. A comparison of the observed features of the simplex bands with the predictions of the RAT-PRM calculations suggests that $\mathrm{^{217}Ra}$ exhibits an intermediate the behavior between the extremes of spherical and octupole-deformed nuclei. The termination of the simplex bands at intermediate energies and the structures lying above reflect the dominance of the single-particle excitations at higher excitation energies.

Quasi-two-dimensional anisotropic superconductivity in Li intercalated 2H-TaS$_2$

Two-dimensional (2D) superconductivity in artificial interfaces and atomic-thin layers has gained attention for its exotic quantum phenomena and practical applications. Although bulk van der Waals layered materials have been explored for 2D superconductivity, most of these compounds do not exhibit remarkable properties despite exhibiting 2D characteristics. Here we report a comprehensive analysis of single crystals of Li intercalated 2H-TaS$_2$ superconductor, suggesting weakly coupled anisotropic superconductivity. Angle-dependent magnetotransport and the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition confirm quasi-2D superconductivity in 2H-Li$_x$TaS$_2$.

Superconducting properties of van der Waals metal-rich subsulfide Nb$_{1.7}$Ta$_{3.3}$S$_2$

Layered metal-rich subsulfides have become a promising area for exploring intriguing properties such as superconductivity, nontrivial topology, and charge density waves; however, despite their extraordinary potential, they have remained largely unexplored. We report a comprehensive analysis of a van der Waals layered metal-rich subsulfide, Nb$_{1.7}$Ta$_{3.3}$S$_2$, using a range of measuring techniques, including AC transport, magnetization, and specific heat. Our measurements confirm the occurrence of a type-II superconducting transition at a temperature of approximately $T_c$ = 3.64(1) K. Furthermore, specific heat measurements suggest weakly coupled, nodeless superconductivity.

Superconducting ground state study of valence skip compound AgSnSe$_2$

The valence-skipped superconductors are natural candidates for unconventional superconductivity, as they can exhibit a negative effective, attractive interaction for electron-pairing. This work reports comprehensive XRD, magnetization, specific heat and muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements ($μ$SR) on a valence-skipped compound: AgSnSe$_2$. The temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat ($C_{el}(T)$) and of the upper critical field ($H_{c2}(T)$) provide evidence of two-gap superconductivity, which is also confirmed by our transverse-field $μ$SR measurements. Our zero-field $μ$SR measurements suggest preserved time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting ground state of AgSnSe$_2$.

Time-reversal symmetry breaking in superconducting low-carrier-density quasi-skutterudite Lu3Os4Ge13

The complex structure of the Remeika phases, the intriguing quantum states they display, and their low carrier concentrations are a strong motivation to study the nature of their superconducting phases. In this work, the microscopic properties of the superconducting phase of single-crystalline Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$ are investigated by muon-spin relaxation and rotation ($μ$SR) measurements. The zero-field $μ$SR data reveal the presence of spontaneous static or quasi-static magnetic fields in the superconducting state, breaking time-reversal symmetry; the associated internal magnetic field scale is found to be exceptionally large ($\approx$ 0.18~mT). Furthermore, transverse-field $μ$SR measurements in the vortex state of Lu$_3$Os$_4$Ge$_{13}$ imply a complex gap function with significantly different strengths on different parts of the Fermi surface. While our measurements do not completely determine the order parameter, they strongly indicate that electron-electron interactions are essential to stabilizing pairing in the system, thus, demonstrating its unconventional nature.

Diffracting and Non-diffracting random fields

We have generated and propagated both diffracting and non-diffracting speckles using the scattering of perfect optical vortices. The diffracting speckles have been realized in the near field and non-diffracting speckles have been realized in the far field, that is after taking the Fourier transform of near-field speckles using a simple convex lens. The exact analytical expressions have been provided for the size of both diffracting as well as non-diffracting speckles and compared with our experimental results. We found that the experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical results. These results may find applications in classical cryptography and communication as we have both varying and non-varying random field patterns with propagation distance.

Two Dimensional Multigap Superconductivity in Bulk 2H-TaSSe

Superconducting transition metal dichalcogenides emerged as a prime candidate for topological superconductivity. This work presents a detailed investigation of superconducting and transport properties on 2H-TaSeS single crystals using magnetization, transport, and specific heat measurements. These measurements suggest multigap anisotropic superconductivity with the upper critical field, breaking Pauli limiting field in both in-plane and out-of-plane directions. The angle dependence of the upper critical field suggests 2-dimensional superconducting nature in bulk 2H- TaSeS.

Anisotropic Spatial Entanglement

The photon-pairs generated through spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) possess strong correlations in their transverse position and momentum degrees of freedom. For such photon pairs, the transverse position correlation length depends on the crystal thickness and the pump wavelength, whereas the transverse momentum correlation length depends on the beam waist and spatial coherence length of the pump. By controlling these parameters, it is possible to engineer the spatial entanglement. Here, we utilize the circular asymmetry of the pump by using an elliptical-Gaussian beam to change the degree of entanglement in transverse directions, which we call anisotropic entanglement. We show the interrelation between the degree of anisotropic entanglement and the asymmetry in the beam width. In addition, we also show that for a highly asymmetric pump beam, the entanglement along the y-direction completely vanishes, whereas the entanglement in the x-direction remains intact.

Single Particle Configurations of the Excited States of $^{203}$Po

Excited states of the $^{203}$Po ($Z = 84, N = 119$) have been investigated after populating them through $^{194}$Pt($^{13}$C,4n) fusion-evaporation reaction at E$_{beam}$ = 74 MeV and using a large array of Compton suppressed HPGe clover detectors as the detection setup for the emitted $γ$-rays. Standard techniques of $γ$-ray spectroscopy have been applied towards establishing the level structure of the nucleus. Twenty new $γ$-ray transitions have been identified therein, through $γ-γ$ coincidence measurements, and spin-parity assignments of several states have been determined or confirmed, following the angular correlation and linear polarization measurements on the observed $γ$-rays. The excited states have been interpreted in the framework of large basis shell model calculations, while comparing their calculated and experimental energies. They have been principally ascribed to proton population in the $h_{9/2}$ and $i_{13/2}$ orbitals outside the $Z = 82$ closure and neutron occupation of the $f_{5/2}$, $p_{3/2}$ and $i_{13/2}$ orbitals in the $N = 126$ shell.

Intensity correlations in perturbed optical vortices: Diagnosis of the topological charge

We propose and experimentally verify a novel scheme for diagnosing the order of a perturbed optical vortex using its 2-D spatial autocorrelation function. The order of a vortex was found to be equal to the number of dark rings or zero points present in the correlation function. We have provided a compact analytical expression for the correlation function in the form of Laguerre polynomials. Further, we have utilized the divergence of the first zero point of Laguerre polynomials upon propagation to obtain information about higher-order spatial modes, and compared it with our experimental results. It has been shown that the accuracy of obtained information can further be enhanced by increasing the collection area of scattered vortex beams. These results find applications in free-space optical and satellite communication as the proposed technique is alignment-free, and information can be obtained even with a small portion of the scattered beam.

Superconducting properties of pseudobinary telluride Chevrel Phase Mo$_4$Re$_2$Te$_8$

Unconventional superconductivity in the Chevrel phase offers a wide structural aspect to understand the superconducting ground state. A detailed investigation on the superconducting properties of Re based pseudobinary telluride Chevrel phase Mo$_4$Re$_2$Te$_8$ is reported. It crystallizes in a trigonal structure with the space group $R\bar{3}H$ having superconducting transition temperature at $T_C$ = 3.26(3) K. Specific heat measurements suggests a fully gapped superconducting state; however, the proximity of upper critical field value from the Pauli limiting field can be attributed to unconventional nature.

Superconducting and structural properties of non-centrosymmetric Re6Hf superconductor under high pressure

We report the effect of high pressure on the superconducting, vortex pinning, and structural properties of a polycrystalline non-centrosymmetric superconductor Re6Hf. The superconducting transition temperature, Tc, reveals a modest decrease as pressure P increases with a slope -0.046 K/GPa (-0.065 K/GPa) estimated from resistivity measurements up to 8 GPa (magnetization measurement ~ 1.1 GPa). Structural analysis up to ~18 GPa reveals monotonic decreases of lattice constant without undergoing any structural transition and a high value of bulk modulus B0= 333.63 GPa, indicating the stability of the structure. Furthermore, the upper critical field and lower critical field at absolute temperature (Hc2(0) & Hc1(0)) decreases slightly from the ambient pressure value as pressure increases up to 2.5 GPa. In addition, up to P ~ 2.5 GPa using thermally activated flux flow of vortices revealed a double linearity field dependence of activation energy of vortices, confirming the coexistence of single and collective pinning vortex states. Moreover, analysis of critical current density using the collective pinning theory showed the transformation of δTc to δl pinning as pressure increases, possibly due to migration of grain boundaries. Besides, the band structure calculations using density functional theory show that density of states decreases modestly with pressure, which may be a possible reason for such a small decrease in Tc by pressure.

Time-reversal-symmetry Breaking in the Superconducting State of ScS

We have studied the electronic properties of ScS, a transition-metal monochalcogenide with rocksalt crystal structure, using magnetization, specific heat, transport, and muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. All measurements confirm the bulk superconducting in ScS with a transition temperature of $T_{C}$ = 5.1(5) K. Specific heat together with transverse-field $μ$SR measurements indicate a full gap, while our zero-field $μ$SR study reveals the presence of spontaneous static or quasi-static magnetic fields emerging when entering the superconducting state. We discuss various possible microscopic origins of the observed time-reversal-symmetry breaking. As none of them can be readily reconciled with a conventional pairing mechanism, this introduces ScS as a novel candidate material for unconventional superconductivity.

Time-reversal symmetry breaking in frustrated superconductor Re$_2$Hf

Geometrical frustration leads to novel quantum phenomena such as the spin-liquid phase in triangular and Kagomé lattices. Intra-band and inter-band Fermi surface (FS) nesting can drive unique superconducting (SC) ground states with $d$-wave and $s^{\pm}$ pairing symmetries, respectively, according to the criterion that the SC gap changes sign across the nesting wavevector. For an odd number of FSs, when multiple inter-band nesting is of comparable strength, the sign-reversal criterion between different FS sheets can leads to frustration, which promotes novel SC order parameters. Here we report the experimental observation of a time-reversal symmetry breaking pairing state in Re$_2$Hf resulting from FS nesting frustration. Furthermore, our electronic specific heat and transverse-field $μ$SR experiments suggest a fully gaped pairing symmetry. The first-principle electronic structure calculation reveals multiple Fermi surface sheets with comparable inter-band nesting strength. Implementing the {\it ab-initio} band structure, we compute spin-fluctuation mediated SC pairing symmetry which reveals a $s+is'$-pairing state - consistent with experimental observations. Our investigation demonstrates a novel SC state which provides a putative setting for both applied and fundamental study.
