Observation of a $γ$-band based on two-quasiparticle configuration in $^{70}$Ge

The structure of $^{70}$Ge has been studied through in-beam gamma ray spectroscopy. A new band structure is identified that leads to forking of the ground-state band into two excited bands. Band structures have been investigated using the microscopic triaxial projected shell model approach. The observed forking is demonstrated to result from almost simultaneous band crossing of the two neutron aligned and the γ-band built on this two-quasiparticle configuration with the ground-state band.

Selecting the pre-detection characteristics for effective fiber coupling of entangled photon sources

Photon modes have an important role in characterizing the quantum sources of light. Proper coupling of various photon modes obtained in spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) process in optical fibers is essential to generate an effective source of entangled photons. The two main pre-detection factors affecting the biphoton mode coupling in SPDC are the pump beam focusing parameter and the crystal thickness. We present the numerical and experimental results on the effect of pump focusing on conditional down-converted photon modes for a Type-I BBO crystal. We experimentally verify that biphoton coupling efficiency decreases asymptotically with pump beam focusing parameter. We attribute this behaviour to (a) the asymmetry in the spatial distribution of down-converted photons with the pump beam focusing parameter and (b) the ellipticity of biphoton modes introduced due to the focusing of the pump beam. We also show experimentally the ellipticity as well as quantify the asymmetry with the pump focusing parameter. These results may be useful in selecting optimum conditions in the down-conversion process for generating efficient sources of entangled photons for quantum information applications.

Violation of Bell's inequality for phase singular beams

We have considered optical beams with phase singularity and experimentally verified that these beams, although being classical, have properties of two mode entanglement in quantum states. We have observed the violation of Bell's inequality for continuous variables using the Wigner distribution function (WDF) proposed by Chowdhury et al. [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{88}, 013830 (2013)]. Our experiment establishes a new form of Bell's inequality in terms of the WDF which can be used for classical as well as quantum systems.

Scattering of non-separable states of light

We experimentally show that the non-separability of polarization and orbital angular momentum present in a light beam remains preserved under scattering through a random medium like rotating ground glass. We verify this by measuring the degree of polarization and observing the intensity distribution of the beam when projected to different polarization states, before as well as after the scattering. We extend our study to the non-maximally non-separable states also.

Three particle Hyper Entanglement: Teleportation and Quantum Key Distribution

We present a scheme to generate three particle hyper-entanglement utilizing polarization and orbital angular momentum (OAM) of a photon. We show that the generated state can be used to teleport a two-qubit state described by the polarization and the OAM. The proposed quantum system has also been used to describe a new efficient quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol. We give a sketch of the experimental arrangement to realize the proposed teleportation and the QKD.

Divergence of optical vortex beams

We show, both theoretically and experimentally, that the propagation of optical vortices in free space can be analysed by using the width ($w(z)$) of the host Gaussian beam and the inner and outer radii of the vortex beam at the source plane ($z=0$) as defined in \textit{Optics Letters \textbf{39,} 4364-4367 (2014)}. We also studied the divergence of vortex beams, considered as the rate of change of inner or outer radius with the propagation distance, and found that it varies with the order in the same way as that of the inner and outer radii at zero propagation distance. These results may be useful in designing optical fibers for orbital angular momentum modes that play a crucial role in quantum communication.

Enhanced electron correlations at the SrxCa1-xVO3 surface

We report hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements of the electronic structure of the prototypical correlated oxide SrxCa1-xVO3. By comparing spectra recorded at different excitation energies, we show that 2.2 keV photoelectrons contain a substantial surface component, whereas 4.2 keV photoelectrons originate essentially from the bulk of the sample. Bulk-sensitive measurements of the O 2p valence band are found to be in good agreement with ab initio calculations of the electronic structure, with some modest adjustments to the orbital-dependent photoionization cross sections. The evolution of the O 2p electronic structure as a function of the Sr content is dominated by A-site hybridization. Near the Fermi level, the correlated V 3d Hubbard bands are found to evolve in both binding energy and spectral weight as a function of distance from the vacuum interface, revealing higher correlation at the surface than in the bulk.

High Spin Spectroscopy and Shape Evolution in 105Cd

High spin states in 105Cd were studied using 16O beam on 92Mo reaction at an incident beam energy of 75 MeV. The level scheme of 105Cd has been observed up to an excitation energy of 10.8 MeV with the addition of 30 new gamma transitions to the previous work. Spin and parity for most of the reported levels are assigned from the DCO ratios and linear polarization measurements. The microscopic origin of the investigated band structures is discussed in the context of triaxial projected shell model. The energies of observed positive and negative parity bands agree with the predictions of the TPSM by considering triaxial deformation for the observed excited band structures. The shape evolution with increasing angular momentum is explained in the framework of Cranked Shell Model and the Total Routhian Surface calculations.

A polarization gadget with two quarter wave plates: Application to Mueller Polarimetry

We show that there are number of ways to transform an arbitrary polarization state to another with just two quarter wave plates (QWP). We have verified this geometrically using the trajectories of the initial and final polarization states corresponding to all the fast axis orientations of a QWP on the Poincare sphere. The exact analytical expression for the locus of polarization states has also been given that describes the trajectory. An analytical treatment of the equations obtained through matrix operations corresponding to the transformation supports the geometrical representation. This knowledge can be used to obtain the Mueller matrix by just using quarter wave plates which has been shown experimentally by exploiting projections of the output states on the input states.

Crossing of large multiquasiparticle magnetic-rotation bands in $^{198}$Bi

High-spin states in the doubly-odd $^{198}$Bi nucleus have been studied by using the $^{185,187}$Re($^{16}$O, xn) reactions at the beam energy of 112.5 MeV. $γ-γ$ coincidence were measured by using the INGA array with 15 Compton suppressed clover HPGe detectors. The observed levels have been assigned definite spin-parity. The high spin structure is grouped into three bands (B1, B2 and B3), of which two (B1 and B2) exhibit the properties of magnetic rotation (MR). Tilted axis cranking calculations were carried out to explain the MR bands having large multi-quasiparticle configurations. The calculated results explain the bands B1 and B2 very nicely, confirming the shears mechanism and suggest a crossing of two MR bands in both the cases. The crossing is from 6-qp to 8-qp in band B1 and from 4-qp to 6-qp in band B2, a very rare finding. A semiclassical model has also been used to obtain the particle-hole interaction strengths for the bands B1 and B2, below the band crossing.

Multipixel sub-shot noise phase measurement with classical light interferometry

We demonstrate accurate phase measurement from low photon level interference data using a constrained optimization method that takes into account the expected redundancy in the unknown phase function. This approach is shown to have significant noise advantage over traditional methods such as balanced homodyning or phase shifting that treat individual pixels in the interference data as independent of each other. Our interference experiments comparing the optimization method with the traditional phase shifting method show that when the same photon resources are used, the optimization method provides phase recoveries with tighter error bars. In particular, RMS phase error performance of the optimization method for low photon number data (10 photons per pixel) shows $>$ 5X noise gain over the phase shifting method. In our experiments where a laser light source is used for illumination, the results imply phase measurement with accuracy better than the conventional single pixel based shot noise limit (SNL) that assumes independent phases at individual pixels. The constrained optimization approach presented here is independent of the nature of light source and may further enhance the accuracy of phase detection when a nonclassical light source is used.

Probing the superconducting ground state of the noncentrosymmetric superconductors CaTSi3 (T = Ir, Pt) using muon-spin relaxation and rotation

The superconducting properties of CaTSi3 (where T = Pt and Ir) have been investigated using muon spectroscopy. Our muon-spin relaxation results suggest that in both these superconductors time-reversal symmetry is preserved, while muon-spin rotation data show that the temperature dependence of the superfluid density is consistent with an isotropic s-wave gap. The magnetic penetration depths and upper critical fields determined from our transverse-field muon-spin rotation spectra are found to be 448(6) and 170(6) nm, and 3800(500) and 1700(300) G, for CaPtSi3 and CaIrSi3 respectively. The superconducting coherence lengths of the two materials have also been determined and are 29(2) nm for CaPtSi3 and 44(4) nm for CaIrSi3.

Higher order optical vortices and formation of speckles

We have experimentally generated higher order optical vortices and scattered them through a ground glass plate that results in speckle formation. Intensity autocorrelation measurements of speckles show that their size decreases with increase in the order of the vortex. It implies increase in angular diameter of the vortices with their order. The characterization of vortices in terms of their annular bright ring also helps us to understand these observations. The results may find applications in stellar intensity interferometry and thermal ghost imaging.

Spatial distribution of Spontaneous Parametric Down-Converted Photons for higher order Optical Vortices

We make a source of entangled photons (SEP) using spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in a non-linear crystal and study the spatial distribution of photon pairs obtained through the down-conversion of different modes of light including higher order vortices. We observe that for the Gaussian pump, the thickness of the SPDC ring varies linearly with the radius of pump beam. However, in case of vortex carrying beams, two concentric SPDC rings are formed for beams above a critical radius. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of SPDC rings increase with increase in the order of optical vortex beams. The presence of a critical beam width for the vortices as well as the observed FWHM of the SPDC rings are supported with our numerical results.

Observation of Time-Reversal Symmetry Breaking in the Non-Centrosymmetric Superconductor Re6Zr

We have investigated the superconducting state of the non-centrosymmetric compound Re6Zr using magnetization, heat capacity, and muon-spin relaxation/rotation (muSR) measurements. Re6Zr has a superconducting transition temperature, Tc = 6.75 K. Transverse-field muSR experiments, used to probe the superfluid density, suggest an s-wave character for the superconducting gap. However, zero and longitudinal-field muSR data reveal the presence of spontaneous static magnetic fields below Tc indicating that time-reversal symmetry is broken in the superconducting state and an unconventional pairing mechanism. An analysis of the pairing symmetries identifies the ground states compatible with time-reversal symmetry breaking.

Investigations of the superconducting states of noncentrosymmetric LaPdSi3 and LaPtSi3

The noncentrosymmetric superconductors LaPdSi3 and LaPtSi3 have been studied with magnetization, specific heat, resistivity and muon spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) measurements. These crystallize in the tetragonal BaNiSn3 structure and superconductivity is observed at Tc = 2.65 K for LaPdSi3 and Tc = 1.52(6) K for LaPtSi3. The results are consistent with both compounds being weakly coupled, fully gapped superconductors but muSR measurements reveal that LaPdSi3 is a bulk type-I superconductor while LaPtSi3 is a type-II material with a Ginzburg-Landau parameter of kappa = 2.49(4). This is further supported by specific heat measurements, where the transition in an applied field is first-order in LaPdSi3 but second-order in LaPtSi3. The electronic specific heat in the superconducting state was analyzed using an isotropic s-wave model that gave Delta/kTc = 1.757(4) for LaPdSi3 and 1.735(5) for LaPtSi3. The temperature dependence of the effective penetration depth of LaPtSi3 was extracted from muSR measurements and was fitted giving Delta/kTc = 1.60(8) and lambda(0) = 239(3) nm. A critical field of Bc(0) = 182.7 G was obtained for LaPdSi3 from muSR measurements, which is in good agreement with the calculated thermodynamic critical field.

Measuring Mueller matrix of an arbitrary optical element with a fixed set of polarization optics

We have described a novel way to determine the Mueller matrix of any optical element by using projection method. For this purpose, we have used two universal SU(2) gadgets for polarization optics to obtain projection matrix directly from the experiment. Mueller matrix has been determined using the experimentally obtained projection matrix for three known optical elements namely free space, half wave plate and quarter wave plate. Experimental matrices are in good agreement with the corresponding theoretical matrices. The error is minimized as the experimental conditions remains same for all measurements since we have used a fixed set of polarization optics i.e. there is no removal or insertion of an optical component during the experiment.

Neutron scattering and muon spin relaxation measurements of the non-centrosymmetric antiferromagnet CeCoGe3

The magnetic states of the non-centrosymmetric, pressure induced superconductor CeCoGe3 have been studied with magnetic susceptibility, muon spin relaxation(muSR), single crystal neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering (INS). CeCoGe3 exhibits three magnetic phase transitions at T_N1 = 21 K, T_N2 = 12 K and T_N3 = 8 K. The presence of long range magnetic order below T_N1 is revealed by the observation of oscillations of the asymmetry in the muSR spectra between 13 K and 20 K and a sharp increase in the muon depolarization rate. Single crystal neutron diffraction measurements reveal magnetic Bragg peaks consistent with propagation vectors of k = 2/3 between T_N1 and T_N2, k = 5/8between T_N2 and T_N3 and k = 1/2 below T_N3. An increase in intensity of the (1 1 0) reflection between T_N1 and T_N3 also indicates a ferromagnetic component in these phases. These measurements are consistent with an equal moment, two-up, two-down magnetic structure below T_N3, with a magnetic moment of 0.405(5) mu_B/Ce. Above T_N2, the results are consistent with an equal moment, two-up, one-down structure with a moment of 0.360(6) mu_B/Ce. INS studies reveal two crystal-field (CEF) excitations at 19 and 27 meV. From an analysis with a CEF model, the wave-functions of the J = 5/2 multiplet are evaluated along with a prediction for the magnitude and direction of the ground state magnetic moment. Our model correctly predicts that the moments order along the c axis but the observed magnetic moment of 0.405(5) mu_B is reduced compared to the predicted moment of 1.01 mu_B. This is ascribed to hybridization between the localized Ce^3+ f-electrons and the conduction band. This suggests that CeCoGe3 has a degree of hybridization between that of CeRhGe3 and the non-centrosymmetric superconductor CeRhSi3.
