Hilbert schemes and stable pairs: GIT and derived category wall crossings

We show that the Hilbert scheme of curves and Le Potier's moduli space of stable pairs with one dimensional support have a common GIT construction. The two spaces correspond to chambers on either side of a wall in the space of GIT linearisations. We explain why this is not enough to prove the "DT/PT wall crossing" conjecture relating the invariants derived from these moduli spaces when the underlying variety is a 3-fold. We then give a gentle introduction to a small part of Joyce's theory for such wall crossings, and use it to give a short proof of an identity relating the Euler characteristics of these moduli spaces. When the 3-fold is Calabi-Yau the identity is the Euler-characteristic analogue of the DT/PT wall crossing conjecture, but for general 3-folds it is something different, as we discuss.

Weighted projective embeddings, stability of orbifolds and constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics

We embed polarised orbifolds with cyclic stabiliser groups into weighted projective space via a weighted form of Kodaira embedding. Dividing by the (non-reductive) automorphisms of weighted projective space then formally gives a moduli space of orbifolds. We show how to express this as a reductive quotient and so a GIT problem, thus defining a notion of stability for orbifolds. We then prove an orbifold version of Donaldson's theorem: the existence of an orbifold Kahler metric of constant scalar curvature implies K-semistability. By extending the notion of slope stability to orbifolds we therefore get an explicit obstruction to the existence of constant scalar curvature orbifold Kahler metrics. We describe the manifold applications of this orbifold result, and show how many previously known results (Troyanov, Ghigi-Kollar, Rollin-Singer, the AdS/CFT Sasaki-Einstein obstructions of Gauntlett-Martelli-Sparks-Yau) fit into this framework.

The 3-fold vertex via stable pairs

The theory of stable pairs in the derived category yields an enumerative geometry of curves in 3-folds. We evaluate the equivariant vertex for stable pairs on toric 3-folds in terms of weighted box counting. In the toric Calabi-Yau case, the result simplifies to a new form of pure box counting. The conjectural equivalence with the DT vertex predicts remarkable identities. The equivariant vertex governs primary insertions in the theory of stable pairs for toric varieties. We consider also the descendent vertex and conjecture the complete rationality of the descendent theory for stable pairs.

Notes on GIT and symplectic reduction for bundles and varieties

These notes give an introduction to Geometric Invariant Theory and symplectic reduction, with lots of pictures and simple examples. We describe their applications to moduli of bundles and varieties, and their infinite dimensional analogues in gauge theory and the theory of special metrics on algebraic varieties. Donaldson's "quantisation" link between the infinite and finite dimensional situations is described, as are surprisingly strong connections between the bundle and variety cases.

Stability conditions and the braid group

We find stability conditions ([Do], [Br]) on some derived categories of differential graded modules over a graded algebra studied in [RZ], [KS]. This category arises in both derived Fukaya categories and derived categories of coherent sheaves. This gives the first examples of stability conditions on the A-model side of mirror symmetry, where the triangulated category is not naturally the derived category of an abelian category. The existence of stability conditions, however, gives many such abelian categories, as predicted by mirror symmetry. In our examples in 2 dimensions we completely describe a connected component of the space of stability conditions as the universal cover of the configuration space of $(k+1)$ distinct points with centre of mass zero in $\C$, with deck transformations the braid group action of [KS], [ST]. This gives a geometric origin for these braid group actions and their faithfulness, and axiomatises the proposal for stability of Lagrangians in [Th] and the example proved by mean curvature flow in [TY].

$\mathbb P$-objects and autoequivalences of derived categories

We describe new autoequivalences of derived categories of coherent sheaves arising from what we call $\mathbb P^n$-objects of the category. Standard examples arise from holomorphic symplectic manifolds. Under mirror symmetry these autoequivalences should be mirror to Seidel's Dehn twists about lagrangian $\mathbb P^n$ submanifolds. We give various connections to spherical objects and spherical twists, and include a simple description of Atiyah and Kodaira-Spencer classes in an appendix.

The geometry of mirror symmetry

We give a brief survey of some of the geometry of mirror symmetry, written in 2004 for the "Encyclopaedia of Mathematical Physics". Probably a little bit out of date now in a few places, but hey.

An obstruction to the existence of constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics

We prove that polarised manifolds that admit a constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metric satisfy a condition we call slope semistability. That is, we define the slope $μ$ for a projective manifold and for each of its subschemes, and show that if $X$ is cscK then $μ(Z)\leμ(X)$ for all subschemes $Z$. This gives many examples of manifolds with Kähler classes which do not admit cscK metrics, such as del Pezzo surfaces and projective bundles. If $\PP(E)\to B$ is a projective bundle which admits a cscK metric in a rational Kähler class with sufficiently small fibres, then $E$ is a slope semistable bundle (and $B$ is a slope semistable polarised manifold). The same is true for \emph{all} rational Kähler classes if the base $B$ is a curve. We also show that the slope inequality holds automatically for smooth curves, canonically polarised and Calabi Yau manifolds, and manifolds with $c_1(X)<0$ and $L$ close to the canonical polarisation.

Nodes and the Hodge conjecture

The Hodge conjecture is shown to be equivalent to a question about the homology of very ample divisors with ordinary double point singularities. The infinitesimal version of the result is also discussed.

A study of the Hilbert-Mumford criterion for the stability of projective varieties

We make a systematic study of the Hilbert-Mumford criterion for different notions of stability for polarised algebraic varieties $(X,L)$; in particular for K- and Chow stability. For each type of stability this leads to a concept of slope $μ$ for varieties and their subschemes; if $(X,L)$ is semistable then $μ(Z)\leμ(X)$ for all $Z\subset X$. We give examples such as curves, canonical models and Calabi-Yaus. We prove various foundational technical results towards understanding the converse, leading to partial results; in particular this gives a geometric (rather than combinatorial) proof of the stability of smooth curves.

A Polar de Rham Theorem

We prove an analogue of the de Rham theorem for polar homology; that the polar homology $HP_q(X)$ of a smooth projective variety $X$ is isomorphic to its $H^{n,n-q}$ Dolbeault cohomology group. This analogue can be regarded as a geometric complexification where arbitrary (sub)manifolds are replaced by complex (sub)manifolds and de Rham's operator $d$ is replaced by Dolbeault's $\bar\partial$.

Symplectic conifold transitions

We introduce a symplectic surgery in six dimensions which collapses Lagrangian three-spheres and replaces them by symplectic two-spheres. Under mirror symmetry it corresponds to an operation on complex 3-folds studied by Clemens, Friedman and Tian. We describe several examples which show that there are either many more Calabi-Yau manifolds (e.g. rigid ones) than previously thought or there exist ``symplectic Calabi-Yaus'' -- non-Kaehler symplectic 6-folds with c_1=0. The analogous surgery in four dimensions, with a generalisation to ADE-trees of Lagrangians, implies that the canonical class of a minimal complex surface contains symplectic forms if and only if it has positive square.

Symplectic surgeries from singularities

We describe a variety of symplectic surgeries (not a priori compatible with Kahler structures) which are obtained by combining local Kahler degenerations and resolutions of singularities. The effect of the surgeries is to replace configurations of Lagrangian spheres with symplectic submanifolds. We discuss several examples in detail, relating them to existence questions for symplectic manifolds with $c_1>0, c_1=0, c_1<0$ in four and six dimensions.

Special Lagrangians, stable bundles and mean curvature flow

We make a conjecture about mean curvature flow of Lagrangian submanifolds of Calabi-Yau manifolds, expanding on \cite{Th}. We give new results about the stability condition, and propose a Jordan-Hölder-type decomposition of (special) Lagrangians. The main results are the uniqueness of special Lagrangians in hamiltonian deformation classes of Lagrangians, under mild conditions, and a proof of the conjecture in some cases with symmetry: mean curvature flow converging to Shapere-Vafa's examples of SLags.

Derived categories for the working mathematician

It is becoming increasingly difficult for geometers and even physicists to avoid papers containing phrases like `triangulated category', not to mention derived functors. I will give some motivation for such things from algebraic geometry, and show how the concepts are already familiar from topology. This gives a natural and simple way to look at cohomology and other scary concepts in homological algebra like Ext, Tor, hypercohomology and spectral sequences.

A holomorphic Casson invariant for Calabi-Yau 3-folds, and bundles on K3 fibrations

We briefly review the formal picture in which a Calabi-Yau $n$-fold is the complex analogue of an oriented real $n$-manifold, and a Fano with a fixed smooth anticanonical divisor is the analogue of a manifold with boundary, motivating a holomorphic Casson invariant counting bundles on a Calabi-Yau 3-fold. We develop the deformation theory necessary to obtain the virtual moduli cycles of \cite{LT}, \cite{BF} in moduli spaces of stable sheaves whose higher obstruction groups vanish. This gives, for instance, virtual moduli cycles in Hilbert schemes of curves in $\Pee^3$, and Donaldson-- and Gromov-Witten-- like invariants of Fano 3-folds. It also allows us to define the holomorphic Casson invariant of a Calabi-Yau 3-fold $X$, prove it is deformation invariant, and compute it explicitly in some examples. Then we calculate moduli spaces of sheaves on a general $K3$ fibration $X$, enabling us to compute the invariant for some ranks and Chern classes, and equate it to Gromov-Witten invariants of the ``Mukai-dual'' 3-fold for others. As an example the invariant is shown to distinguish Gross' diffeomorphic 3-folds. Finally the Mukai-dual 3-fold is shown to be Calabi-Yau and its cohomology is related to that of $X$.

Moment maps, monodromy and mirror manifolds

Via considerations of symplectic reduction, monodromy, mirror symmetry and Chern-Simons functionals, a conjecture is proposed on the existence of special Lagrangians in the hamiltonian deformation class of a given Lagrangian submanifold of a Calabi-Yau manifold. It involves a stability condition for graded Lagrangians, and can be proved for the simple case of $T^2$.
