Pair creation and axial anomaly in light-cone $QED_2$

The 1+1 dimensional massive Dirac equation is solved exactly in light-cone coordinates for $x^+ > 0$ and $x^- > -L$, in the presence of an arbitrary $x^+$ dependent electric field. Our solution resolves the ambiguity at $p^+ = 0$. We also obtain the one loop rate for pair production for a positive electric field, compute the expectation values of the vector and axial vector currents, and recover the well known anomaly $e^2 E/π$ in the divergence of the latter. A final intriguing result is that the theory seems to exhibit a phase transition in the limit of infinite $L$.

Light Cone QED in a Homogeneous Electric Background

I present an exact solution for the Heisenberg picture, Dirac electron in the presence of an electric field which depends arbitrarily upon the light cone time parameter $x^+ = (t+x)/\sqrt{2}$. This is the largest class of background fields for which the mode functions have ever been obtained. The solution applies to electrons of any mass and in any spacetime dimension. The traditional ampiguity at $p^+ = 0$ is explicitly resolved. It turns out that the initial value operators include not only $(I + γ^0 γ^1) ψ$ at $x^+ = 0$ but also $(I - γ^0 γ^1) ψ$ at $x^- = -L$. Pair creation is a discrete and instantaneous event on the light cone, so one can compute the particle production rate in real time. In $D=1+1$ dimensions one can also see the anomaly. Another novel feature of the solution is that the expectation value of the currents operators depends non-analytically upon the background field. This seems to suggest a new, strong phase of QED.

The One Loop Effective Action of QED for a General Class of Electric Fields

We compute the effective action of QED at one loop order for an electric field which points in the $\hat{z}$ direction and depends arbitrarily upon the light cone time coordinate, $x^+ = (x^0 + x^3)/\sqrt{2}$. This calculation generalizes Schwinger's formula for the vacuum persistence probability in the presence of a constant electric field.

A Scalar Measure Of The Local Expansion Rate

We define a scalar measure of the local expansion rate based on how astronomers determine the Hubble constant. Our observable is the inverse conformal d'Alembertian acting on a unit ``standard candle.'' Because this quantity is an integral over the past lightcone of the observation point it provides a manifestly causal and covariant technique for averaging over small fluctuations. For an exactly homogeneous and isotropic spacetime our scalar gives minus one half times the inverse square of the Hubble parameter. Our proposal is that it be assigned this meaning generally and that it be employed to decide the issue of whether or not there is a significant quantum gravitational back-reaction on inflation. Several techniques are discussed for promoting the scalar to a full invariant by giving a geometrical description for the point of observation. We work out an explicit formalism for evaluating the invariant in perturbation theory. The results for two simple models are presented in subsequent papers.

No One Loop Back_Reaction In Chaotic Inflation

We use an invariant operator to study the quantum gravitational back-reaction to scalar perturbations during chaotic inflation. Our operator is the inverse covariant d'Alembertian expressed as a function of the local value of the inflaton. In the slow roll approximation this observable gives $-1/(2 H^2)$ for an arbitrary homogeneous and isotropic geometry, hence it is a good candidate for measuring the local expansion rate even when the spacetime is not perfectly homogeneous and isotropic. Corrections quadratic in the scalar creation and annihilation operators of the initial value surface are included using the slow-roll and long wavelength approximations. The result is that all terms which could produce a significant secular back-reaction cancel from the operator, before one even takes its expectation value. Although it is not relevant to the current study, we also develop a formalism for using stochastic samples to study back-reaction.

Back-Reaction Is For Real

We demonstrate the existence of a secular back-reaction on inflation using a simple scalar model. The model consists of a massless, minimally coupled scalar with a quartic self-interaction which is a spectator to $Λ$-driven inflation. To avoid problems with coincident propagators, and to make the scalars interact more like gravitons, we impose a covariant normal ordering prescription which has the effect of removing tadpole graphs. This version of the theory exhibits a secular slowing at three loop order due to interactions between virtual infrared scalars which are ripped apart by the inflating background. The effect is quantified using an invariant observable and all orders bounds are given. We also argue that, although stochastic effects can have either sign, the slowing mechanism is superimposed upon them.

Homogeneous and Isotropic Charge Densities to Accelerate the Universe

Various theoretical obstacles are associated with a homogeneous and isotropic distribution of ``charge'' which is subject to a repulsive, long-range force. We show how these can be overcome, for all practical purposes, by the simple device of endowing the particle which carries the force with a small mass. The resulting situation may be relevant to a phase of cosmological acceleration which is triggered by the approach to masslessness of such a force carrier.

A Newtonian Model for the Quantum Gravitational Back-Reaction on Inflation

Quantum gravitational back-reaction offers a simultaneous explanation for why the cosmological constant is so small and a natural model of inflation in which scalars play no role. In this talk I review previous work and present a simple model of the mechanism in which the induced stress tensor behaves like negative vacuum energy with a density proportional to $-Λ/{8πG} \cdot (G Λ)^2 \cdot H t$. The model also highlights the essential role of causality in back-reaction.

Schwinger's Propagator Is Only A Green's Function

Schwinger used an analytic continuation of the effective action to correctly compute the particle production rate per unit volume for QED in a uniform electric field. However, if one simply evaluates the one loop expectation value of the current operator using his propagator, the result is zero! We analyze this curious fact from the context of a canonical formalism of operators and states. The explanation turns out to be that Schwinger's propagator is not actually the expectation value of the time-ordered product of field operators in the presence of a time-independent state, although it is of course a Green's function. We compute the true propagator in the presence of a state which is empty at $x_+ = 0$ where $x_+ \equiv (x^0+x^3)/\sqrt{2}$ is the lightcone evolution parameter. Our result can be generalized to electric fields which depend arbitrarily on $x_+$.

Back-Reaction In Lightcone QED

We consider the back-reaction of quantum electrodynamics upon an electric field E(x_+) = - A'_-(x_+) which is parallel to x^3 and depends only on the lightcone coordinate x_+ = (x^0 + x^3)/\sqrt{2}. Novel features are that the mode functions have simple expressions for arbitrary A_-(x_+), and that one cannot ignore the usual lightcone ambiguity at zero + momentum. Each mode of definite canonical momenta k_+ experiences pair creation at the instant when its kinetic momentum p_+=k_+ - e A_-(x_+) vanishes, at which point operators from the surface at x_- =-\infty play a crucial role. Our formalism permits a more explicit and complete derivation of the rate of particle production than is usually given. We show that the system can be understood as the infinite boost limit of the analogous problem of an electric field which is homogeneous on surfaces of constant x^0.

A Canonical Formalism For Lagrangians With Nonlocality Of Finite Extent

I consider Lagrangians which depend nonlocally in time but in such a way that there is no mixing between times differing by more than some finite value $Δt$. By considering these systems as the limits of ever higher derivative theories I obtain a canonical formalism in which the coordinates are the dynamical variable from $t$ to $t + {Δt}$. A simple formula for the conjugate momenta is derived in the same way. This formalism makes apparent the virulent instability of this entire class of nonlocal Lagrangians. As an example, the formalism is applied to a nonlocal analog of the harmonic oscillator.

One Loop Back Reaction On Chaotic Inflation

We extend, for the case of a general scalar potential, the inflaton-graviton Feynman rules recently developed by Iliopoulos {\it et al.} As an application we compute the leading term, for late co-moving times, of the one loop back reaction on the expansion rate for $V(ϕ) = \frac12 m^2 ϕ^2$. This is expressed as the logarithmic time derivative of the scale factor in the coordinate system for which the expectation value of the metric has the form: $<0 | g_{μν}({\bar t},{\vec x}) | 0 > dx^μ dx^ν = - d{\bar t}^2 + a^2({\bar t}) d{\vec x} \cdot d{\vec x}$. This quantity should be a gauge independent observable. Our result for it agrees exactly with that inferred from the effect previously computed by Mukhanov {\it et al.} using canonical quantization. It is significant that the two calculations were made with completely different schemes for fixing the gauge, and that our computation was done using the standard formalism of covariant quantization. This should settle some of the issues recently raised by Unruh.

One Loop Back Reaction On Power Law Inflation

We consider quantum mechanical corrections to a homogeneous, isotropic and spatially flat geometry whose scale factor expands classically as a general power of the co-moving time. The effects of both gravitons and the scalar inflaton are computed at one loop using the manifestly causal formalism of Schwinger with the Feynman rules recently developed by Iliopoulos {\it et al.} We find no significant effect, in marked contrast with the result obtained by Mukhanov {\it et al.} for chaotic inflation based on a quadratic potential. By applying the canonical technique of Mukhanov {\it et al.} to the exponential potentials of power law inflation, we show that the two methods produce the same results, within the approximations employed, for these backgrounds. We therefore conclude that the shape of the inflaton potential can have an enormous impact on the one loop back-reaction.

Particles As Bound States In Their Own Potentials

I consider the problem of computing the mass of a charged, gravitating particle in quantum field theory. It is shown how solving for the first quantized propagator of a particle in the presence of its own potentials reproduces the gauge and general coordinate invariant sum over an infinite class of diagrams. The distinguishing feature of this class of diagrams is that all closed loops contain part of the continuous matter line running from early to late times. The next order term would have one closed loop external to the continuous matter line, and so on. I argue that the gravitational potentials in the 0-th order term may permit the formation of bound states, which would then dominate the propagator. It is conceivable that this provides an tractable technique for computing the masses of fundamental particles from first principles. It is also conceivable that the expansion in external loops permits gravity to regulate certain ultraviolet divergences.

Cosmological Density Perturbations From A Quantum Gravitational Model Of Inflation

We derive the implications for anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background following from a model of inflation in which a bare cosmological constant is gradually screened by an infrared process in quantum gravity. The model predicts that the amplitude of scalar perturbations is $A_S = (2.0 \pm .2) \times 10^{-5}$, that the tensor-to-scalar ratio is $r \approx 1.7 \times 10^{-3}$, and that the scalar and tensor spectral indices are $n \approx .97$ and $n_T \approx -2.8 \times 10^{-4}$, respectively. By comparing the model's power spectrum with the COBE 4-year RMS quadrupole, the mass scale of inflation is determined to be $M = (.72 \pm .03) \times 10^{16}~{\rm GeV}$. At this scale the model produces about $10^8$ e-foldings of inflation, so another prediction is $Ω= 1$.

Perturbative Quantum Gravity And Newton's Law On A Flat Robertson-Walker Background

We derive the Feynman rules for the graviton in the presence of a flat Robertson-Walker background and give explicit expressions for the propagator in the physically interesting cases of inflation, radiation domination, and matter domination. The aforementioned background is generated by a scalar field source which should be taken to be dynamical. As an elementary application, we compute the corrections to the Newtonian gravitational force in the present matter dominated era and conclude -- as expected -- that they are negligible except for the largest scales.

Non-Perturbative Models For The Quantum Gravitational Back-Reaction On Inflation

We consider a universe in which inflation commences because of a positive cosmological constant, the effect of which is progressively screened by the interaction between virtual gravitons that become trapped in the expansion of spacetime. Perturbative calculations have shown that screening becomes non-perturbatively large at late times. In this paper we consider effective field equations which can be evolved numerically to provide a non-perturbative description of the process. The induced stress tensor is that of an effective scalar field which is a non-local functional of the metric. We use the known perturbative result, constrained by general principles and guided by a physical description of the screening mechanism, to formulate a class of ansatze for this functional. A scheme is given for numerically evolving the field equations which result from a simple ansatz, from the beginning of inflation past the time when it ends. We find that inflation comes to a sudden end, producing a system whose equation of state rapidly approaches that of radiation. Explicit numerical results are presented.

Matter Contributions to the Expansion Rate of the Universe

We consider the effect of various particles on the cosmic expansion rate relative to that of the graviton. Effectively massless fermions, gauge bosons and conformally coupled scalars make only minuscule contributions due to local conformal invariance. Minimally coupled scalars can give much stronger contributions, but they are still sub-dominant to those of gravitons on account of global conformal invariance. Unless effectively massless scalar particles with very particular couplings exist, the leading effect on the expansion rate is furnished solely by the graviton. An upper bound on the mass of such scalar particles is obtained.
