Logarithmic double ramification cycles

Let $A=(a_1,\ldots, a_n)$ be a vector of integers which sum to $k(2g-2+n)$. The double ramification cycle $\mathsf{DR}_{g,A}\in \mathsf{CH}^g(\mathcal{M}_{g,n})$ on the moduli space of curves is the virtual class of an Abel-Jacobi locus of pointed curves $(C,x_1,\ldots,x_n)$ satisfying $$\mathcal{O}_C\Big(\sum_{i=1}^n a_i x_i\Big) \, \simeq\, \big(ω^{\mathsf{log}}_{C}\big)^k\, .$$ The Abel-Jacobi construction requires log blow-ups of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ to resolve the indeterminacies of the Abel-Jacobi map. Holmes has shown that $\mathsf{DR}_{g,A}$ admits a canonical lift $\mathsf{logDR}_{g,A} \in \mathsf{logCH}^g(\mathcal{M}_{g,n})$ to the logarithmic Chow ring, which is the limit of the intersection theories of all such blow-ups. The main result of the paper is an explicit formula for $\mathsf{logDR}_{g,A}$ which lifts Pixton's formula for $\mathsf{DR}_{g,A}$. The central idea is to study the universal Jacobian over the moduli space of curves (following Caporaso, Kass-Pagani, and Abreu-Pacini) for certain stability conditions. Using the criterion of Holmes-Schwarz, the universal double ramification theory of Bae-Holmes-Pandharipande-Schmitt-Schwarz applied to the universal line bundle determines the logarithmic double ramification cycle. The resulting formula, written in the language of piecewise polynomials, depends upon the stability condition (and admits a wall-crossing study). Several examples of logarithmic and higher double ramification cycles are computed.

Relations in the tautological ring of the moduli space of curves

The virtual geometry of the moduli space of stable quotients is used to obtain Chow relations among the kappa classes on the moduli space of nonsingular genus g curves. In a series of steps, the stable quotient relations are rewritten in successively simpler forms. The final result is the proof of the Faber-Zagier relations (conjectured in 2000).

Double ramification cycles with target varieties

Let X be a nonsingular projective algebraic variety, and let S be a line bundle on X. Let A = (a_1,..., a_n) be a vector of integers. Consider a map f from a pointed curve (C,x_1,...,x_n) to X satisfying the following condition: the line bundle f*(S) has a meromorphic section with zeroes and poles exactly at the marked points x_i with orders prescribed by the integers a_i. A compactification of the space of maps based upon the above condition is given by the moduli space of stable maps to rubber over X. The main result of the paper is an explicit formula (in tautological classes) for the push-forward of the virtual fundamental class of the moduli space of stable maps to rubber over X via the forgetful morphism to the moduli space of stable maps to X. In case X is a point, the result here specializes to Pixton's formula for the double ramification cycle. Applications of the new formula, viewed as calculating double ramification cycles with target X, are given.

Virasoro constraints for stable pairs on toric 3-folds

Using new explicit formulas for the stationary GW/PT descendent correspondence for nonsingular projective toric 3-folds, we show that the correspondence intertwines the Virasoro constraints in Gromov-Witten theory for stable maps with the Virasoro constraints for stable pairs. Since the Virasoro constraints in Gromov-Witten theory are known to hold in the toric case, we establish the stationary Virasoro constraints for the theory of stable pairs on toric 3-folds. As a consequence, new Virasoro constraints for tautological integrals over Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces are also obtained.

Tautological relations via r-spin structures

Relations among tautological classes on the moduli space of stable curves are obtained via the study of Witten's r-spin theory for higher r. In order to calculate the quantum product, a new formula relating the r-spin correlators in genus 0 to the representation theory of sl2 is proven. The Givental-Teleman classification of CohFTs is used at two special semisimple points of the associated Frobenius manifold. At the first semisimple point, the R-matrix is exactly solved in terms of hypergeometric series. As a result, an explicit formula for Witten's r-spin class is obtained (along with tautological relations in higher degrees). As an application, the r=4 relations are used to bound the Betti numbers of the tautological ring of the moduli of nonsingular curves. At the second semisimple point, the form of the R-matrix implies a polynomiality property in r of Witten's r-spin class. In the Appendix (with F. Janda), a conjecture relating the r=0 limit of Witten's r-spin class to the class of the moduli space of holomorphic differentials is presented.

Cohomological field theories with non-tautological classes

A method of constructing Cohomological Field Theories (CohFTs) with unit using minimal classes on the moduli spaces of curves is developed. As a simple consequence, CohFTs with unit are found which take values outside of the tautological cohomology of the moduli spaces of curves. A study of minimal classes in low genus is presented in the Appendix by D. Petersen.

Curve counting via stable pairs in the derived category

For a nonsingular projective 3-fold $X$, we define integer invariants virtually enumerating pairs $(C,D)$ where $C\subset X$ is an embedded curve and $D\subset C$ is a divisor. A virtual class is constructed on the associated moduli space by viewing a pair as an object in the derived category of $X$. The resulting invariants are conjecturally equivalent, after universal transformations, to both the Gromov-Witten and DT theories of $X$. For Calabi-Yau 3-folds, the latter equivalence should be viewed as a wall-crossing formula in the derived category. Several calculations of the new invariants are carried out. In the Fano case, the local contributions of nonsingular embedded curves are found. In the local toric Calabi-Yau case, a completely new form of the topological vertex is described. The virtual enumeration of pairs is closely related to the geometry underlying the BPS state counts of Gopakumar and Vafa. We prove that our integrality predictions for Gromov-Witten invariants agree with the BPS integrality. Conversely, the BPS geometry imposes strong conditions on the enumeration of pairs.

On the motivic stable pairs invariants of K3 surfaces

For a K3 surface S, we study motivic invariants of stable pairs moduli spaces associated to 3-fold thickenings of S. We conjecture suitable deformation and divisibility invariances for the Betti realization. Our conjectures, together with earlier calculations of Kawai-Yoshioka, imply a full determination of the theory in terms of the Hodge numbers of the Hilbert schemes of points of S. The work may be viewed as the third in a sequence of formulas starting with Yau-Zaslow and Katz-Klemm-Vafa (each recovering the former). Numerical data suggest the motivic invariants are linked to the Mathieu M_24 moonshine phenomena. The KKV formula and the Pairs/Noether-Lefschetz correspondence together determine the BPS counts of K3-fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds in fiber classes in terms of modular forms. We propose a framework for a refined P/NL correspondence for the motivic invariants of K3-fibered CY 3-folds. For the STU model, a complete conjecture is presented.

The Katz-Klemm-Vafa conjecture for K3 surfaces

We prove the KKV conjecture expressing Gromov-Witten invariants of K3 surfaces in terms of modular forms. Our results apply in every genus and for every curve class. The proof uses the Gromov-Witten/Pairs correspondence for K3-fibered hypersurfaces of dimension 3 to reduce the KKV conjecture to statements about stable pairs on (thickenings of) K3 surfaces. Using degeneration arguments and new multiple cover results for stable pairs, we reduce the KKV conjecture further to the known primitive cases. Our results yield a new proof of the full Yau-Zaslow formula, establish new Gromov-Witten multiple cover formulas, and express the fiberwise Gromov-Witten partition functions of K3-fibered 3-folds in terms of explicit modular forms.

Stable pairs and BPS invariants

We define the BPS invariants of Gopakumar-Vafa in the case of irreducible curve classes on Calabi-Yau 3-folds. The main tools are the theory of stable pairs in the derived category and Behrend's constructible function approach to the virtual class. We prove that for irreducible classes the stable pairs generating function satisfies the strong BPS rationality conjectures. We define the contribution of each curve to the BPS invariants. A curve $C$ only contributes to the BPS invariants in genera lying between the geometric genus and arithmetic genus of $C$. Complete formulae are derived for nonsingular and nodal curves. A discussion of primitive classes on K3 surfaces from the point of view of stable pairs is given in the Appendix via calculations of Kawai-Yoshioka. A proof of the Yau-Zaslow formula for rational curve counts is obtained. A connection is made to the Katz-Klemm-Vafa formula for BPS counts in all genera.

The Chern character of the Verlinde bundle over the moduli space of stable curves

We prove an explicit formula for the total Chern character of the Verlinde bundle over the moduli space of pointed stable curves in terms of tautological classes. The Chern characters of the Verlinde bundles define a semisimple CohFT (the ranks, given by the Verlinde formula, determine a semisimple fusion algebra). According to Teleman's classification of semisimple CohFTs, there exists an element of Givental's group transforming the fusion algebra into the CohFT. We determine the element using the first Chern class of the Verlinde bundle on the moduli space of nonsingular curves and the projective flatness of the Hitchin connection.

13/2 ways of counting curves

In the past 20 years, compactifications of the families of curves in algebraic varieties X have been studied via stable maps, Hilbert schemes, stable pairs, unramified maps, and stable quotients. Each path leads to a different enumeration of curves. A common thread is the use of a 2-term deformation/obstruction theory to define a virtual fundamental class. The richest geometry occurs when X is a nonsingular projective variety of dimension 3. We survey here the 13/2 principal ways to count curves with special attention to the 3-fold case. The different theories are linked by a web of conjectural relationships which we highlight. Our goal is to provide a guide for graduate students looking for an elementary route into the subject.

Notes on the proof of the KKV conjecture

The Katz-Klemm-Vafa conjecture expresses the Gromov-Witten theory of K3 surfaces (and K3-fibred 3-folds in fibre classes) in terms of modular forms. Its recent proof gives the first non-toric geometry in dimension greater than 1 where Gromov-Witten theory is exactly solved in all genera. We survey the various steps in the proof. The MNOP correspondence and a new Pairs/Noether-Lefschetz correspondence for K3-fibred 3-folds transform the Gromov-Witten problem into a calculation of the full stable pairs theory of a local K3-fibred 3-fold. The stable pairs calculation is then carried out via degeneration, localisation, vanishing results, and new multiple cover formulae.

A calculus for the moduli space of curves

This article accompanies my lecture at the 2015 AMS summer institute in algebraic geometry in Salt Lake City. I survey the recent advances in the study of tautological classes on the moduli spaces of curves. After discussing the Faber-Zagier relations on the moduli spaces of nonsingular curves and the kappa rings of the moduli spaces of curves of compact type, I present Pixton's proposal for a complete calculus of tautological classes on the moduli spaces of stable curves. Several open questions are discussed. An effort has been made to condense a great deal of mathematics into as few pages as possible with the hope that the reader will follow through to the end.

Double ramification cycles on the moduli spaces of curves

Curves of genus g which admit a map to CP1 with specified ramification profile mu over 0 and nu over infinity define a double ramification cycle DR_g(mu,nu) on the moduli space of curves. The study of the restrictions of these cycles to the moduli of nonsingular curves is a classical topic. In 2003, Hain calculated the cycles for curves of compact type. We study here double ramification cycles on the moduli space of Deligne-Mumford stable curves. The cycle DR_g(mu,nu) for stable curves is defined via the virtual fundamental class of the moduli of stable maps to rubber. Our main result is the proof of an explicit formula for DR_g(mu,nu) in the tautological ring conjectured by Pixton in 2014. The formula expresses the double ramification cycle as a sum over stable graphs (corresponding to strata classes) with summand equal to a product over markings and edges. The result answers a question of Eliashberg from 2001 and specializes to Hain's formula in the compact type case. When mu and nu are both empty, the formula for double ramification cycles expresses the top Chern class lambda_g of the Hodge bundle of the moduli space of stable genus g curves as a push-forward of tautological classes supported on the divisor of nonseparating nodes. Applications to Hodge integral calculations are given.

Gromov-Witten/Pairs correspondence for the quintic 3-fold

We use the Gromov-Witten/Pairs descendent correspondence for toric 3-folds and degeneration arguments to establish the GW/P correspondence for several compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds (including all CY complete intersections in products of projective spaces). A crucial aspect of the proof is the study of the GW/P correspondence for descendents in relative geometries. Projective bundles over surfaces relative to a section play a special role. The GW/P correspondence for Calabi-Yau complete intersections provides a structure result for the Gromov-Witten invariants in a fixed curve class. After change of variables, the Gromov-Witten series is a rational function in the variable -q=exp(iu) invariant under q => 1/q.

Curve counting on K3 x E, the Igusa cusp form chi_{10}, and descendent integration

Let S be a nonsingular projective K3 surface. Motivated by the study of the Gromov-Witten theory of the Hilbert scheme of points of S, we conjecture a formula for the Gromov-Witten theory (in all curve classes) of the Calabi-Yau 3-fold S x E where E is an elliptic curve. In the primitive case, our conjecture is expressed in terms of the Igusa cusp form chi_{10} and matches a prediction via heterotic duality by Katz, Klemm, and Vafa. In imprimitive cases, our conjecture suggests a new structure for the complete theory of descendent integration for K3 surfaces. Via the Gromov-Witten/Pairs correspondence, a conjecture for the reduced stable pairs theory of S x E is also presented. Speculations about the motivic stable pairs theory of S x E are made. The reduced Gromov-Witten theory of the Hilbert scheme of points of S is much richer than S x E. The 2-point function of Hilb(S,d) determines a matrix with trace equal to the partition function of S x E. A conjectural form for the full matrix is given.

The hypergeometric functions of the Faber-Zagier and Pixton relations

The relations in the tautological ring of the moduli space M_g of nonsingular curves conjectured by Faber-Zagier in 2000 and extended to the moduli space of stable pointed curves by Pixton in 2012 are based upon two hypergeometric series A and B. The question of the geometric origins of these series has been solved in at least two ways (via the Frobenius structures associated to 3-spin curves and to CP1). The series A and B also appear in the study of descendent integration on the moduli spaces of open and closed curves. We survey here the various occurrences of A and B starting from their appearance in the asymptotic expansion of the Airy function (calculated by Stokes in the 19th century). Several open questions are proposed.
