Statistical analysis of Ni nanowires breaking processes: a numerical simulation study

A statistical analysis of the breaking behavior of Ni nanowires is presented. Using molecular dynamic simulations, we have determined the time evolution of both the nanowire atomic structure and its minimum cross section (Sm(t)). Accumulating thousands of independent breaking events, Sm histograms are built and used to study the influence of the temperature, the crystalline stretching direction and the initial nanowire size. The proportion of monomers, dimers and more complex structures at the latest stages of the breaking process are calculated, finding important differences among results obtained for different nanowire orientations and sizes. Three main cases have been observed. (A) [111] stretching direction and large nanowire sizes: the wire evolves from more complex structures to monomers and dimers prior its rupture; well ordered structures is presented during the breaking process. (B) Large nanowires stretched along the [100] and [110] directions: the system mainly breaks from complex structures (low probability of finding monomers and dimers), having disordered regions during their breakage; at room temperature, a huge histogram peak around Sm=5 appears, showing the presence of long staggered pentagonal Ni wires with ...-5-1-5-... structure. (C) Initial wire size is small: strong size effects independently on the temperature and stretching direction. Finally, the local structure around monomers and dimmers do not depend on the stretching direction. These configurations differ from those usually chosen in static studies of conductance.

BEC-BCS crossover of a trapped Fermi gas without using the local density approximation

We perform a variational quantum Monte Carlo simulation of an interacting Fermi gas confined in a three dimensional harmonic potential. This gas is considered as the precursor system from which a molecular bosonic gas is formed. Based on the results of two-body calculations for trapped atoms, we propose a family of variational many-body wave functions that takes into account the qualitative different nature of the BCS and BEC regimes as a function of the scattering length. Energies, densities and correlation functions are calculated and compared with previous results for homogeneous gases. Universality tests at the unitarity limit are performed including the verification of the virial relation and the evaluation of the $β$ parameter.

Granular instability in a vibrated U tube

We study experimentally the collective motion of grains inside a U shaped tube undergoing vertical oscillations, and we develop a very simple quantitative model that captures relevant features of the observed behaviour. The height difference between the granular columns grows with time when the system is shaken at sufficiently low frequencies. The system exhibits two types of growth: exponentially divergent (type I) and exponentially saturating (type II), depending on the size of the grains. The type I growth can be quenched by removing the air whereas the type II behavior can occur in the absence of air. There is a good agreement between the model proposed and our experimental results.

A simple variational approach for an interacting Fermi trapped gas

Quantum states of a two-component Fermi trapped gas are described by introducing an effective trap frequency, determined via variational techniques. Closed expressions for the contribution of a contact interaction potential to the total energy and the pairing interaction are derived. They are valid for both few and large number of particles, given the discrete nature of the formulation, and therefore richer than the continuous expressions, which are perfectly matched. Pairing energies within a shell are explicitly evaluated and its allowed values at a given energy level delimited. We show the importance of the interaction over the trap energy as the number of particles ($N$) grows and the temperature decreases. At zero temperature we find a polynomial dependence of the interaction energy on the Fermi energy, whose dominant term at large $N$ corresponds with the mean field approximation result. In addition, the role of the strength of an attractive potential on the total energy is exhibited.

Influence of quenched dilution on the quasi-long-range ordered phase of the 2d XY model

The influence of non magnetic impurities in the 2d XY model is investigated through Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. The general picture of the transition is fully understood from the Harris criterion which predicts that the universality class is unchanged, and the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless description of the topological transition remains valid. We nevertheless address here the question about the influence of dilution on the quasi-long-range order at low temperatures. In particular, we study the asymptotic of the pair correlation function and report the MC estimates for the critical exponent $η$ at different dilutions. In the weak dilution region, our MC calculations are further supported by simple spin-wave-like calculations.

Correlations in the low-temperature phase of the two-dimensional XY model

Monte Carlo simulations of the two-dimensional XY model are performed in a square geometry with fixed boundary conditions. Using a conformal mapping it is very easy to deduce the exponent eta_sigma(T) of the order parameter correlation function at any temperature in the critical phase of the model. The temperature behaviour of eta_sigma(T) is obtained numerically with a good accuracy up to the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature. At very low temperatures, a good agreement is found with Berezinskii's harmonic approximation. Surprisingly, we show some evidence that there are no logarithmic corrections to the behaviour of the order parameter density profile (with symmetry breaking surface fields) at the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature.
