NuSTEC White Paper: Status and Challenges of Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering

The precise measurement of neutrino properties is among the highest priorities in fundamental particle physics, involving many experiments worldwide. Since the experiments rely on the interactions of neutrinos with bound nucleons inside atomic nuclei, the planned advances in the scope and precision of these experiments requires a commensurate effort in the understanding and modeling of the hadronic and nuclear physics of these interactions, which is incorporated as a nuclear model in neutrino event generators. This model is essential to every phase of experimental analyses and its theoretical uncertainties play an important role in interpreting every result. In this White Paper we discuss in detail the impact of neutrino-nucleus interactions, especially the nuclear effects, on the measurement of neutrino properties using the determination of oscillation parameters as a central example. After an Executive Summary and a concise Overview of the issues, we explain how the neutrino event generators work, what can be learned from electron-nucleus interactions and how each underlying physics process - from quasi-elastic to deep inelastic scattering - is understood today. We then emphasize how our understanding must improve to meet the demands of future experiments. With every topic we find that the challenges can be met only with the active support and collaboration among specialists in strong interactions and electroweak physics that include theorists and experimentalists from both the nuclear and high energy physics communities.

Study of W and Z Boson Production in Proton-Lead Collisions at the LHC with KP Nuclear Parton Distributions

We present a detailed study of the (pseudo)rapidity distributions of massive vector bosons produced in p+p and p+Pb collisions at the LHC within the next-to-leading order approximation in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. In particular, we discuss the impact of different cold nuclear matter effects on this process using the nuclear parton distributions calculated from the microscopic model developed by Kulagin and Petti (KP). This model was successfully applied to study nuclear effects in the deep-inelastic scattering and the Drell-Yan reactions off various (fixed) target nuclei. Results are compared with the recent CMS and ATLAS p+Pb data with \sqrt{s}=5.02 TeV per two colliding nucleons. We found an excellent agreement between the predictions of the KP model and the recent LHC data on W+- and Z0 production in p+Pb collisions, including the differential cross sections, the forward-backward asymmetries, and W charge asymmetry. We also discuss the sensitivity of the current and future LHC data to the underlying mechanisms responsible for the nuclear modifications of parton density functions.

Nuclear Effects in the Deuteron and Global PDF Fits

We present a detailed study of nuclear corrections in the deuteron (D) from an analysis of data from charged-lepton deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) off proton and D, as well as from dimuon pair production in pp and pD collisions and $W^\pm$ and the $Z$ boson production at pp (p$\rm \bar p$) colliders. In particular, we discuss the determination of the off-shell function describing the modification of parton distributions (PDF) in bound nucleons in the context of global PDF fits. Our results are consistent with the ones obtained earlier from the study of the ratios of DIS structure functions $F_2^A/F_2^D$ in nuclei with $A\geq4$, confirming the universality of the off-shell function. We also discuss the sensitivity to various models of the deuteron wave function and the impact of nuclear corrections on the determination of the $d$ quark distribution.

Nuclear Parton Distributions and the Drell-Yan Reaction

We discuss the nuclear parton distribution functions on the basis of our recently developed semi-microscopic model, which takes into account a number of nuclear effects including Fermi motion and nuclear binding, nuclear meson-exchange currents and off-shell corrections to bound nucleon distributions as well as nuclear shadowing effect. We also discuss application to the nuclear Drell-Yan process and compare our predictions with data from the E772 and E866 experiments.

Nucleon PDF separation with the collider and fixed-target data

We consider the impact of the recent data obtained by the LHC, Tevatron, and fixed-target experiments on the nucleon quark distributions with a particular focus on disentangling different quark species. An improved determination of the poorly known strange sea distribution is obtained due to including data from the neutrino-induced deep-inelastic scattering experiments NOMAD and CHORUS. The impact of the associated (W + c) production data by CMS and ATLAS on the strange sea determination is also studied and a comparison with earlier results based on the collider data is discussed. Finally, the recent LHC and Tevatron data on the charged lepton asymmetry are compared to the NNLO ABM predictions and the potential of this input in improving the non-strange sea distributions is evaluated.

eRHIC Design Study: An Electron-Ion Collider at BNL

This document presents BNL's plan for an electron-ion collider, eRHIC, a major new research tool that builds on the existing RHIC facility to advance the long-term vision for Nuclear Physics to discover and understand the emergent phenomena of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the fundamental theory of the strong interaction that binds the atomic nucleus. We describe the scientific requirements for such a facility, following up on the community-wide 2012 white paper, 'Electron-Ion Collider: the Next QCD Frontier', and present a design concept that incorporates new, innovative accelerator techniques to provide a cost-effective upgrade of RHIC with polarized electron beams colliding with the full array of RHIC hadron beams. The new facility will deliver electron-nucleon luminosity of 10^33-10^34 cm-1sec-1 for collisions of 15.9 GeV polarized electrons on either 250 GeV polarized protons or 100 GeV/u heavy ion beams. The facility will also be capable of providing an electron beam energy of 21.2 GeV, at reduced luminosity. We discuss the on-going R&D effort to realize the project, and present key detector requirements and design ideas for an experimental program capable of making the 'golden measurements' called for in the EIC White Paper.

Nuclear parton distributions and the Drell-Yan process

We study the nuclear parton distribution functions on the basis of our recently developed semi-microscopic model, which takes into account a number of nuclear effects including nuclear shadowing, Fermi motion and nuclear binding, nuclear meson-exchange currents, and off-shell corrections to bound nucleon distributions. We discuss in detail the dependencies of nuclear effects on the type of parton distribution (nuclear sea vs valence), as well as on the parton flavor (isospin). We apply the resulting nuclear parton distributions to calculate ratios of cross sections for proton-induced Drell-Yan production off different nuclear targets. We obtain a good agreement on the magnitude, target and projectile $x$, and the dimuon mass dependence of proton-nucleus Drell-Yan process data from the E772 and E866 experiments at Fermilab. We also provide nuclear corrections for the Drell-Yan data from the E605 experiment.

Determination of Strange Sea Quark Distributions from Fixed-target and Collider Data

We present an improved determination of the strange sea distribution in the nucleon with constraints coming from the recent charm production data in neutrino-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering by the NOMAD and CHORUS experiments and from charged current inclusive deep-inelastic scattering at HERA. We demonstrate that the results are consistent with the data from the ATLAS and the CMS experiments on the associated production of $W^\pm$-bosons with $c$-quarks. We also discuss issues related to the recent strange sea determination by the ATLAS experiment using LHC collider data.

Structure functions for light nuclei

We discuss the nuclear EMC effect with particular emphasis on recent data for light nuclei including 2H, 3He, 4He, 9Be, 12C and 14N. In order to verify the consistency of available data, we calculate the χ^2 deviation between different data sets. We find a good agreement between the results from the NMC, SLAC E139, and HERMES experiments. However, our analysis indicates an overall normalization offset of about 2% in the data from the recent JLab E03-103 experiment with respect to previous data for nuclei heavier than 3He. We also discuss the extraction of the neutron/proton structure function ratio F2n/F2p from the nuclear ratios 3He/2H and 2H/1H. Our analysis shows that the E03-103 data on 3He/2H require a renormalization of about 3% in order to be consistent with the F2n/F2p ratio obtained from the NMC experiment. After such a renormalization, the 3He data from the E03-103 data and HERMES experiments are in a good agreement. Finally, we present a detailed comparison between data and model calculations, which include a description of the nuclear binding, Fermi motion and off-shell corrections to the structure functions of bound proton and neutron, as well as the nuclear pion and shadowing corrections. Overall, a good agreement with the available data for all nuclei is obtained.

Strange and Anti-strange Sea Distributions from Neutrino-Nucleon Deep Inelastic Scattering

We perform QCD fit of the nucleon strange and anti-strange sea distributions to the neutrino and anti-neutrino dimuon data by the CCFR and NuTeV collaborations, supplemented by the inclusive charged lepton-nucleon Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) and Drell-Yan data. The effective semi-leptonic charmed-hadron branching ratio is constrained from the inclusive charmed hadron measurements performed by the FNAL-E531 and CHORUS neutrino emulsion experiments as $B_μ=(8.8\pm0.5)%$. We obtain a strange sea suppression factor {$κ(20 {\rm GeV}^2)=0.62\pm0.04({\rm exp.})\pm0.03({\rm QCD})$}. An $x$-distribution of total strange sea obtained in the fit is slightly softer than the non-strange sea, and an asymmetry between strange and anti-strange quark distributions is consistent with zero (integrated over $x$ it is equal to {$0.0013\pm 0.0009({\rm exp.}) \pm 0.0002({\rm QCD})$ at the scale of $20 {\rm GeV^2}$}).

A High Resolution Neutrino Experiment in a Magnetic Field for Project-X at Fermilab

We propose a new high-resolution neutrino experiment within a dipole magnetic field, HiResM$ν$. This experiment will run along with long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments (LBL$ν$) such as NO$ν$A, a large-cavity detector at DUSEL, or a Liquid-Argon detector in the Medium-Energy (ME) configuration of the NuMI-beam. Assuming the 120 GeV Main Injector proton intensities we anticipate 140(50) million $ν_μ$ ($\overlineν_μ$) Charged-Current (CC) events in the fiducial volume, for 3(4)-year run with the ME (anti)neutrino beam. Alternatively, the same statistics could be collected in just 1(1.5) year with the High Energy (HE) beam configuration. The goals of HiResM$ν$ are twofold. It will measure the relative abundance and the energy spectrum of $ν_μ$, $\overlineν_μ$, $ν_e$ and $\overlineν_e$ CC-interactions, which are directly relevant to LBL$ν$. It will serve as an `Event-Generator' of real neutrino interactions to estimate backgrounds and efficiencies in LBL$ν$. As such, it will provide a quantitative determination of the overall energy-scale of neutrino CC interactions and of hadronic multiplicities for all CC and Neutral-Current (NC) event topologies. In addition, it will perform precise measurements of electroweak parameters, of (semi)exclusive processes such as quasi-elastic, resonance, $π^0$ / $K^0_S$ / $Λ$/charm-hadron production, as well as of the hadronic structure of nucleons and nuclei. We expect to reach a sensitivity of about 0.2% on the weak mixing angle by combining different channels. The new experiment will also perform searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model.

Determination of Strange Sea Distributions from Neutrino-Nucleon Deep Inelastic Scattering

We present an analysis of the nucleon strange sea extracted from a global Parton Distribution Function fit including the neutrino and anti-neutrino dimuon data by the CCFR and NuTeV collaborations, the inclusive charged lepton-nucleon Deep Inelastic Scattering and Drell-Yan data. The (anti-)neutrino induced dimuon analysis is constrained by the semi-leptonic charmed-hadron branching ratio $B_μ=(8.8\pm0.5)%$, determined from the inclusive charmed hadron measurements performed by the FNAL-E531 and CHORUS neutrino emulsion experiments. Our analysis yields a strange sea suppression factor $κ(Q^2=20{\rm GeV}^2)=0.62\pm 0.04$, the most precise value available, an $x$-distribution of total strange sea that is slightly softer than the non-strange sea, and an asymmetry between strange and anti-strange quark distributions consistent with zero (integrated over $x$ it is equal to $0.0013 \pm 0.0009$ at $Q^2=20{\rm GeV}^2$).

Update of the global fit of PDFs including the low-Q DIS data

We perform the next-to-next-leading-order (NNLO) QCD global fit of PDFs using inclusive charged-lepton and neutrino DIS data down to Q = 1 GeV. We also consider the data on neutrino-nucleon dimuon production, that allows us to disentangle the strange sea distribution. The fit results in χ^2/NDP = 5150/4338 = 1.2 that demonstrates a good consistency of the data sets used in analysis. The resulting value of α_s(M_Z) = 0.1136+- 0.0007(exp.) is in a good agreement with the previous version of the fit with a more stringent cut on Q. This analysis allows us to improve the accuracy of PDFs. The HT terms of the neutrino-nucleon structure functions F_2 and xF_3 are determined, the former is found to be consistent with one for the charged-leptons if the charge factor is taken into account.

Alignment of the Pixel and SCT Modules for the 2004 ATLAS Combined Test Beam

A small set of final prototypes of the ATLAS Inner Detector silicon tracker (Pixel and SCT) were used to take data during the 2004 Combined Test Beam. Data were collected from runs with beams of different flavour (electrons, pions, muons and photons) with a momentum range of 2 to 180 GeV/c. Four independent methods were used to align the silicon modules. The corrections obtained were validated using the known momenta of the beam particles and were shown to yield consistent results among the different alignment approaches. From the residual distributions, it is concluded that the precision attained in the alignment of the silicon modules is of the order of 5 micrometers in their most precise coordinate.

Nuclear Effects in Neutrino Structure Functions

We discuss calculation of nuclear corrections to the structure functions for the deep-inelastic scattering of muon and (anti)neutrino. Our approach includes a QCD description of the nucleon structure functions as well as the treatment of Fermi motion and nuclear binding, off-shell correction to bound nucleon structure functions, nuclear pion excess and nuclear shadowing. We emphasize the dependence of nuclear effects on the type and C-parity of (anti)neutrino structure functions. We also examine the interplay between different nuclear effects in the Adler and the Gross-Llewellyn-Smith sum rules for nuclei.

Neutrino inclusive inelastic scattering off nuclei

We present a detailed description of high-energy neutrino and antineutrino inelastic inclusive scattering off nuclei in terms of nuclear structure functions. In our approach we take into account a QCD description of the nucleon structure functions as well as a number of basic nuclear effects including nuclear shadowing, Fermi motion and binding, nuclear pion excess and off-shell correction to bound nucleon structure functions. These effects prove to be important in the studies of charged-lepton deep-inelastic scattering. We discuss similarities and dissimilarities in the calculation of nuclear effects for charged-lepton and neutrino scattering caused by nonconserved axial current in neutrino scattering. We examine the Adler and the Gross-Llewellyn-Smith sum rules for nuclear structure functions and find a remarkable cancellation between nuclear shadowing and off-shell corrections in these sum rules. We present calculations of differential cross sections for inclusive neutrino and antineutrino scattering in comparison with recent data on different target materials.

Modeling Lepton-Nucleon Inelastic Scattering from High to Low Momentum Transfer

We present a model for inclusive charged lepton-nucleon and (anti)neutrino-nucleon cross sections at momentum transfer squared, $Q^2$, $\sim1 {\rm GeV}^2$. We quantify the impact of existing low-Q charged-lepton deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) data on effects due to high-twist operators and on the extraction of parton distribution functions (PDFs). No evidence is found for twist-6 contributions to structure functions (SF), and for a twist-4 term in the logitudinal SF at $x\gtrsim0.1$. We find that DIS data are consistent with the NNLO QCD approximation with the target mass and phenomenological high twist corrections. For $Q^2<1 {\rm GeV}^2$, we extend extrapolation of the operator product expansion, preserving the low-$Q$ current-conservation theorems. The procedure yields a good description of data down to $Q^2\sim 0.5 {\rm GeV}^2$. An updated set of PDFs with reduced uncertainty and applicable down to small momentum transfers in the lepton-nucleon scattering is obtained.
