Non-linear effects on radiation propagation around a charged compact object

The propagation of non-linear electromagnetic waves is carefully analyzed on a curved spacetime created by static spherically symmetric mass and charge distribution. We compute how non-linear electrodynamics affects the geodesic deviation and the redshift of photons propagating near this massive charged object. In the first order approximation, the effects of electromagnetic self-interaction can be distinguished from the usual Reissner-Nordström terms. In the particular case of Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian, we find that these self-interaction effects might be important near extremal compact charged objects.

Observational constraints to a unified cosmological model

We propose a phenomenological unified model for dark matter and dark energy based on an equation of state parameter $w$ that scales with the $\arctan$ of the redshift. The free parameters of the model are three constants: $Ω_{b0}$, $α$ and $β$. Parameter $α$ dictates the transition rate between the matter dominated era and the accelerated expansion period. The ratio $β/ α$ gives the redshift of the equivalence between both regimes. Cosmological parameters are fixed by observational data from Primordial Nucleosynthesis (PN), Supernovae of the type Ia (SNIa), Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB) and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO). The calibration of the 138 GRBs events is performed using the 580 SNIa of the Union2.1 data set and a new set of 79 high-redshift GRBs is obtained. The various sets of data are used in different combinations to constraint the parameters through statistical analysis. The unified model is compared to the $Λ$CDM model and their differences are emphasized.

Schwarzschild-type solution in an effective gravitational theory with local Galilean invariance

We construct a Schwarzschild-type exact external solution for a theory of gravity admitting local Galilean invariance. In order to realize the Galilean invariance we need to adopt a five-dimensional manifold. The solution for the gravitational field equations obeys a Birkhoff-like theorem. Three classic tests of general relativity are analyzed in detail: the perihelion shift of the planet Mercury, the deflection of light by the Sun, and the gravitational redshift of atomic spectral lines. The Galilean version of these tests exhibits an additional parameter $b$ related to the fifth-coordinate. This constant $b$ can be estimated by a comparison with observational data. We observe that the Galilean theory is able to reproduce the results traditionally predicted by general relativity in the limit of negligible $b$. This shows that the tests are not specifically Lorentz invariant.

Classic tests of General Relativity described by brane-based spherically symmetric solutions

We discuss a way to obtain information about higher dimensions from observations by studying a brane-based spherically symmetric solution. The three classic tests of General Relativity are analyzed in details: the perihelion shift of the planet Mercury, the deflection of light by the Sun, and the gravitational redshift of atomic spectral lines. The braneworld version of these tests exhibits an additional parameter $b$ related to the fifth-coordinate. This constant $b$ can be constrained by comparison with observational data for massive and massless particles.

Observational constraints to a phenomenological $f\left( R,\nabla R\right) $-model

This paper analyses the cosmological consequences of a modified theory of gravity whose action integral is built from a linear combination of the Ricci scalar $R$ and a quadratic term in the covariant derivative of $R$. The resulting Friedmann equations are of the fifth-order in the Hubble function. These equations are solved numerically for a flat space section geometry and pressureless matter. The cosmological parameters of the higher-order model are fit using SN Ia data and X-ray gas mass fraction in galaxy clusters. The best-fit present-day $t_{0}$ values for the deceleration parameter, jerk and snap are given. The coupling constant $β$\ of the model is not univocally determined by the data fit, but partially constrained by it. Density parameter $Ω_{m0}$ is also determined and shows weak correlation with the other parameters. The model allows for two possible future scenarios: there may be either a premature Big Rip or a Rebouncing event depending on the set of values in the space of parameters. The analysis towards the past performed with the best-fit parameters shows that the model is not able to accommodate a matter-dominated stage required to the formation of structure.

Cosmic acceleration from second order gauge gravity

We construct a phenomenological theory of gravitation based on a second order gauge formulation for the Lorentz group. The model presents a long-range modification for the gravitational field leading to a cosmological model provided with an accelerated expansion at recent times. We estimate the model parameters using observational data and verify that our estimative for the age of the Universe is of the same magnitude than the one predicted by the standard model. The transition from the decelerated expansion regime to the accelerated one occurs recently (at $\sim9.3\;Gyr$).

Weak-field approximation of effective gravitational theory with local Galilean invariance

We examine the weak-field approximation of locally Galilean invariant gravitational theories with general covariance in a $(4+1)$-dimensional Galilean framework. The additional degrees of freedom allow us to obtain Poisson, diffusion, and Schrödinger equations for the fluctuation field. An advantage of this approach over the usual $(3+1)$-dimensional General Relativity is that it allows us to choose an ansatz for the fluctuation field that can accommodate the field equations of the Lagrangian approach to MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) known as AQUAdratic Lagrangian (AQUAL). We investigate a wave solution for the Schrödinger equations.

How can one probe Podolsky Electrodynamics?

We investigate the possibility of detecting the Podolsky generalized electrodynamics constant $a$. First we analyze an ion interferometry apparatus proposed by B. Neyenhuis, et al (Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, (2007) 200401) who looked for deviations from Coulomb's inverse-square law in the context of Proca model. Our results show that this experiment has not enough precision for measurements of $a$. In order to set up bounds for $a$ we investigate the influence of Podolsky's electrostatic potential on the ground state of the Hydrogen atom. The value of the ground state energy of the Hydrogen atom requires Podolsky's constant to be smaller than 5.6 fm, or in energy scales larger than 35.51 MeV.

Realistic Equations of State for the Primeval Universe

Early universe equations of state including realistic interactions between constituents are built up. Under certain reasonable assumptions, these equations are able to generate an inflationary regime prior to the nucleosynthesis period. The resulting accelerated expansion is intense enough to solve the flatness and horizon problems. In the cases of curvature parameter κequal to 0 or +1, the model is able to avoid the initial singularity and offers a natural explanation for why the universe is in expansion.

Gauge Formulation for Higher Order Gravity

This work is an application of the second order gauge theory for the Lorentz group, where a description of the gravitational interaction is obtained which includes derivatives of the curvature. We analyze the form of the second field strenght, $G=\partial F +fAF$, in terms of geometrical variables. All possible independent Lagrangians constructed with quadratic contractions of $F$ and quadratic contractions of $G$ are analyzed. The equations of motion for a particular Lagrangian, which is analogous to Podolsky's term of his Generalized Electrodynamics, are calculated. The static isotropic solution in the linear approximation was found, exhibiting the regular Newtonian behaviour at short distances as well as a meso-large distance modification.

Analytic solutions for the $Λ$-FRW Model

The high precision attained by cosmological data in the last few years has increased the interest in exact solutions. Analytic expressions for solutions in the Standard Model are presented here for all combinations of $Λ= 0$, $Λ\ne 0$, $κ= 0$ and $κ\ne 0$, in the presence and absence of radiation and nonrelativistic matter. The most complete case (here called the $ΛγCDM$ Model) has $Λ\ne 0, κ\ne 0$, and supposes the presence of radiation and dust. It exhibits clearly the recent onset of acceleration. The treatment includes particular models of interest such as the $Λ$CDM Model (which includes the cosmological constant plus cold dark matter as source constituents).

Primeval symmetries

A detailed examination of the Killing equations in Robertson-Walker coordinates shows how the addition of matter and/or radiation to a de Sitter Universe breaks the symmetry generated by four of its Killing fields. The product U = (a^2)(dH/dt) of the squared scale parameter by the time-derivative of the Hubble function encapsulates the relationship between the two cases: the symmetry is maximal when U is a constant, and reduces to the six-parameter symmetry of a generic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker model when it is not. As the fields physical interpretation is not clear in these coordinates, comparison is made with the Killing fields in static coordinates, whose interpretation is made clearer by their direct relationship to the Poincare group generators via Wigner-Inonu contractions.

Second Order Gauge Theory

A gauge theory of second order in the derivatives of the auxiliary field is constructed following Utiyama's program. A novel field strength $G=\partial F+fAF$ arises besides the one of the first order treatment, $F=\partial A-\partial A+fAA$. The associated conserved current is obtained. It has a new feature: topological terms are determined from local invariance requirements. Podolsky Generalized Eletrodynamics is derived as a particular case in which the Lagrangian of the gauge field is $L_{P}\propto G^{2}$. In this application the photon mass is estimated. The SU(N) infrared regime is analysed by means of Alekseev-Arbuzov-Baikov's Lagrangian.

Interacting Constituents in Cosmology

Universe evolution, as described by Friedmann's equations, is determined by source terms fixed by the choice of pressure $\times$ energy-density equations of state $p(ρ)$. The usual approach in Cosmology considers equations of state accounting only for kinematic terms, ignoring the contribution from the interactions between the particles constituting the source fluid. In this work the importance of these neglected terms is emphasized. A systematic method, based on the Statistical Mechanics of real fluids, is proposed to include them. A toy-model is presented which shows how such interaction terms can engender significant cosmological effects.

Cosmic Acceleration from Elementary Interactions

It is possible to generate an accelerated period of expansion from reasonable potentials acting between the universe particle constituents. The pressure of primordial nucleons interacting via a simple nuclear potential is obtained via Mayer's cluster expansion technique. The attractive part of the potential engenders a negative pressure and may therefore be responsible for the cosmic acceleration.
