Microscopic description of quadrupole-octupole coupling in actinides with the Gogny-D1M energy density functional

The interplay between quadrupole and octupole degrees of freedom is discussed in a series of U, Pu, Cm and Cf isotopes both at the mean-field level and beyond. In addition to the static Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach, dynamical beyond-mean-field correlations are taken into account via both parity restoration and symmetry-conserving Generator Coordinate Method calculations based on the parametrization D1M of the Gogny energy density functional. Physical properties such as correlation energies, negative-parity excitation energies as well as reduced transition probabilities $B(E1)$ and $B(E3)$ are discussed in detail and compared with the available experimental data. It is shown that, for the studied nuclei, the quadrupole-octupole coupling is weak and to a large extent the properties of negative parity states can be reasonably well described in terms of the octupole degree of freedom alone.

Microscopic description of fission in neutron-rich Radium isotopes with the Gogny energy density functional

Mean field calculations, based on the D1S, D1N and D1M parametrizations of the Gogny energy density functional, have been carried out to obtain the potential energy surfaces relevant to fission in several Ra isotopes with the neutron number 144 $\le$ N $\le$ 176. Inner and outer barrier heights as well as first and second isomer excitation energies are given. The existence of a well developed third minimum along the fission paths of Ra nuclei, is analyzed in terms of the energetics of the "fragments" defining such elongated configuration. The masses and charges of the fission fragments are studied as functions of the neutron number in the parent Ra isotope. The comparison between fission and $α$-decay half-lives, reveals that the former becomes faster for increasing neutron numbers. Though there exists a strong variance of the results with respect to the parameters used in the computation of the spontaneous fission rate, a change in tendency is observed at N=164 with a steady increase that makes heavier neutron-rich Ra isotopes stable against fission, diminishing the importance of fission recycling in the r-process.

Octupole deformation properties of actinide isotopes within a mean field approach

We discuss the octupole deformation properties of many even-even actinide isotopes. The analysis is carried out in the mean field framework (Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation) by using the axially symmetric octupole moment as a constraint. A one-dimensional octupole collective Hamiltonian is used to obtain properties like excitation energies or $E1$ and $E3$ transition probabilities of the negative parity band-heads associated to the lowest lying $1^{-}$ and $3^{-}$ states. The evolution of these values with neutron number is discussed and a comparison with available experimental data is made. In order to minimize the uncertainties associated to the energy density functional used, the calculations have been carried out for an assorted set ranging from the BCP1 functional to the finite range Gogny interaction with the D1S, D1N and D1M parametrization.

Linear response strength functions with iterative Arnoldi diagonalization

We report on an implementation of a new method to calculate RPA strength functions with iterative non-hermitian Arnoldi diagonalization method, which does not explicitly calculate and store the RPA matrix. We discuss the treatment of spurious modes, numerical stability, and how the method scales as the used model space is enlarged. We perform the particle-hole RPA benchmark calculations for double magic nucleus 132Sn and compare the resulting electromagnetic strength functions against those obtained within the standard RPA.

Unveiling the origin of shape coexistence in lead isotopes

The shape coexistence in the nuclei $^{182-192}$Pb is analyzed within the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach with the effective Gogny force. A good agreement with the experimental energies is found for the coexisting spherical, oblate and prolate states. Contrary to the established interpretation, it is found that the low-lying prolate and oblate $0^+$ states observed in this mass region are predominantly characterized by neutron correlations whereas the protons behave as spectators rather than playing an active role.

Description of the superdeformed band of $^{36}$Ar with the Gogny force

The superdeformed band of $^{36}$Ar is studied with the Gogny force D1S and the angular momentum projected generator coordinate method for the quadrupole moment. The band head excitation energy, moments of inertia, $B(E2)$ transition probabilities and stability against quadrupole fluctuations at low spin are studied. The Self Consistent Cranking method is also used to describe the superdeformed rotational band. In addition, properties of some normal deformed states are discussed.

Quadrupole collectivity of neutron-rich Neon isotopes

The angular momentum projected Generator Coordinate Method, with the quadrupole moment as collective coordinate and the Gogny force (D1S) as the effective interaction, is used to describe the properties of the ground state and low-lying excited states of the even-even Neon isotopes $^{20-34}$Ne, that is, from the stability valley up to the drip-line. It is found that the ground state of the N=20 nucleus $^{30}$Ne is deformed but to a lesser extent than the N=20 isotope of the Magnesium. In the calculations, the isotope $^{32}$Ne is at the drip-line in good agreement with other theoretical predictions. On the other hand, rather good agreement with experimental data for many observables is obtained.

Quadrupole collectivity in Si isotopes around N=20

The angular momentum projected Generator Coordinate Method using the quadrupole moment as collective coordinate and the Gogny force as the effective interaction is used to describe the properties of the ground state and low-lying excited states of the neutron rich light nuclei 32,34,36Si. It is found that the ground state of the nucleus 34Si is spherical. However, this is not only due to the N=20 shell closure as the ground state of 34Si contains a significant amount of the intruder f7/2 neutron orbital. On the other hand, rather good agreement with experimental data for many observables is obtained.

Properties of the predicted super-deformed band in ^{32}S

Properties like the excitation energy with respect to the ground state, moments of inertia, B(E2) transition probabilities and stability against quadrupole fluctuations at low spin of the predicted superdeformed band of ^{32}S are studied with the Gogny force D1S using the angular momentum projected generator coordinate method for the axially symmetric quadrupole moment. The Self Consistent Cranking method is also used to describe the superdeformed rotational band. In addition, properties of some collective normal deformed states are discussed.

Description of quadrupole collectivity in N ~ 20 nuclei with techniques beyond the mean field

Properties of the ground and several collective excited states of the light nuclei ^{30,32,34}Mg are described in the framework of the angular momentum projected Generator Coordinate Method using the quadrupole moment as collective coordinate and the Gogny force as the effective interaction. The calculated excitation energies and B(E2) transition probabilities agree reasonably well with experiment. The results clearly indicate that both the restoration of the rotational symmetry and the quadrupole dynamics are key ingredients for the description of the properties of the above mentioned nuclei.
