Inverse Spin Hall Effect and Anomalous Hall Effect in a Two-Dimensional Electron Gas

We study the coupled dynamics of spin and charge currents in a two-dimensional electron gas in the transport diffusive regime. For systems with inversion symmetry there are established relations between the spin Hall effect, the anomalous Hall effect and the inverse spin Hall effect. However, in two-dimensional electron gases of semiconductors like GaAs, inversion symmetry is broken so that the standard arguments do not apply. We demonstrate that in the presence of a Rashba type of spin-orbit coupling (broken structural inversion symmetry) the anomalous Hall effect, the spin Hall and inverse spin Hall effect are substantially different effects. Furthermore we discuss the inverse spin Hall effect for a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling; our results agree with a recent experiment.

Tuning the Spin Hall Effect in a Two-Dimensional Electron Gas

We provide a theoretical framework for the electric field control of the electron spin in systems with diffusive electron motion. The approach is valid in the experimentally important case where both intrinsic and extrinsic spin-orbit interaction in a two-dimensional electron gas are present simultaneously. Surprisingly, even when the extrinsic mechanism is the dominant driving force for spin Hall currents, the amplitude of the spin Hall conductivity may be considerably tuned by varying the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling via a gate voltage. Furthermore we provide an explanation of the experimentally observed out-of-plane spin polarization in a (110) GaAs quantum well.

Spin polarizations and spin Hall currents in a two-dimensional electron gas with magnetic impurities

We consider a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling, and study the effects of magnetic s-wave impurities and long-range non-magnetic disorder on the spin-charge dynamics of the system. We focus on voltage induced spin polarizations and their relation to spin Hall currents. Our results are obtained using the quasiclassical Green function technique, and hold in the full range of the disorder parameter $αp_Fτ$.

Gutzwiller scheme for electrons and phonons: the half-filled Hubbard-Holstein model

We analyze the ground-state properties of strongly-correlated electrons coupled with phonons by means of a generalized Gutzwiller wavefunction which includes phononic degrees of freedom. We study in detail the paramagnetic half-filled Hubbard-Holstein model, where the electron-electron interaction can lead to a Mott transition, and the electron-phonon coupling to a bipolaronic transition. We critically discuss the quality of the proposed wavefunction in describing the various transitions and crossovers that occur as a function of the parameters. Previous variational attempts are recovered as particular choices of the wavefunction, while keeping all the variational freedom allows to access regions of the phase diagram otherwise inaccessible within previous variational approaches.

Spin Hall effect in a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a magnetic field

We study the spin Hall effect of a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a magnetic field and both the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions. We show that the value of the spin Hall conductivity, which is finite only if the Zeeman spin splitting is taken into account, may be tuned by varying the ratio of the in-plane and out-of-plane components of the applied magnetic field. We identify the origin of this behavior with the different role played by the interplay of spin-orbit and Zeeman couplings for in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic field components.

Magneto-spin Hall conductivity of a two-dimensional electron gas

It is shown that the interplay of long-range disorder and in-plane magnetic field gives rise to an out-of-plane spin polarization and a finite spin Hall conductivity of the two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling. A key aspect is provided by the electric-field induced in-plane spin polarization. Our results are obtained first in the \textit{clean} limit where the spin-orbit splitting is much larger than the disorder broadening of the energy levels via the diagrammatic evaluation of the Kubo-formula. Then the results are shown to hold in the full range of the disorder parameter $αp_F τ$ by means of the quasiclassical Green function technique.

Extended Gutzwiller wavefunction for the Hubbard-Holstein model

We introduce a new type of Gutzwiller variational wavefunction for correlated electrons coupled to phonons, able to treat on equal footing electronic and lattice degrees of freedom. We benchmark the wavefunction in the infinite-$U$ Hubbard-Holstein model away from half-filling on a Bethe lattice, where we can directly compare with exact results by Dynamical Mean-Field Theory. For this model, we find that variational results agree perfectly well with the exact ones. In particular the wavefunction correctly describes the crossover to a heavy polaron gas upon increasing the electron-phonon coupling.

Effective electron-phonon coupling and polaronic transition in the presence of strong correlation

We study the Hubbard-Holstein model using slave-boson mean-field and a variation al Lang-Firsov transformation. We identify weak and strong e-ph coupling solutions, whose stability depends both on the bare e-ph coupling and on the correlation strength. At mean field level the evolution from weak to strong electron-phonon coupling occurs via a first-order polaronic transition if the adiabatic parameter is below a critical value. In the strongly correlated regime and in the adiabatic limit, the region in which the weak-coupling solution is stable is sizeably enlarged with respect to the weakly correlated system and the Mott metal-insulator transition is found to be robust with respect to e-ph interaction.

Renormalization group and Ward identities in quantum liquid phases and in unconventional critical phenomena

By reviewing the application of the renormalization group to different theoretical problems, we emphasize the role played by the general symmetry properties in identifying the relevant running variables describing the behavior of a given physical system. In particular, we show how the constraints due to the Ward identities, which implement the conservation laws associated with the various symmetries, help to minimize the number of independent running variables. This use of the Ward identities is examined both in the case of a stable phase and of a critical phenomenon. In the first case we consider the problems of interacting fermions and bosons. In one dimension general and specific Ward identities are sufficient to show the non-Fermi-liquid character of the interacting fermion system, and also allow to describe the crossover to a Fermi liquid above one dimension. This crossover is examined both in the absence and presence of singular interaction. On the other hand, in the case of interacting bosons in the superfluid phase, the implementation of the Ward identities provides the asymptotically exact description of the acoustic low-energy excitation spectrum, and clarifies the subtle mechanism of how this is realized below and above three dimensions. As a critical phenomenon, we discuss the disorder-driven metal-insulator transition in a disordered interacting Fermi system. In this case, through the use of Ward identities, one is able to associate all the disorder effects to renormalizations of the Landau parameters. As a consequence, the occurrence of a metal-insulator transition is described as a critical breakdown of a Fermi liquid.

Quasiclassical theory of charge transport in disordered interacting electron systems

We consider the corrections to the Boltzmann theory of electrical transport arising from the Coulomb interaction in disordered conductors. In this article the theory is formulated in terms of quasiclassical Green's functions. We demonstrate that the formalism is equivalent to the conventional diagrammatic technique by deriving the well-known Altshuler-Aronov corrections to the conductivity. Compared to the conventional approach, the quasiclassical theory has the advantage of being closer to the Boltzmann theory, and also allows description of interaction effects in the transport across interfaces, as well as non-equilibrium phenomena in the same theoretical framework. As an example, by applying the Zaitsev boundary conditions which were originally developed for superconductors, we obtain the $P(E)$-theory of the Coulomb blockade in tunnel junctions. Furthermore we summarize recent results obtained for the non-equilibrium transport in thin films, wires and fully coherent conductors.

Coherent transport in disordered metals: zero dimensional limit

We consider non-equilibrium transport in disordered conductors. We calculate the interaction correction to the current for a short wire connected to electron reservoirs by resistive interfaces. In the absence of charging effects we find a universal current-voltage-characteristics. The relevance of our calculation for existing experiments is discussed as well as the connection with alternative theoretical approaches.

Electrostatic analogy for integrable pairing force Hamiltonians

For the exactly solved reduced BCS model an electrostatic analogy exists; in particular it served to obtain the exact thermodynamic limit of the model from the Richardson Bethe ansatz equations. We present an electrostatic analogy for a wider class of integrable Hamiltonians with pairing force interactions. We apply it to obtain the exact thermodynamic limit of this class of models. To verify the analytical results, we compare them with numerical solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations for finite systems at half-filling for the ground state.

Magnetoconductance of a two-dimensional metal in the presence of spin-orbit coupling

We show that in the metallic phase of a two dimensional electron gas the spin-orbit coupling due to structure inversion asymmetry leads to a characteristic anisotropy in the magnetoconductance. Within the assumption that the metallic phase can be described by a Fermi liquid, we compute the conductivity in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. Both the spin-orbit coupling and the Zeeman coupling with the magnetic field give rise to two spin subbands, in terms of which most of the transport properties can be discussed. The strongest conductivity anisotropy occurs for Zeeman energies of the order of the Fermi energy corresponding to the depopulation of the upper spin subband. The energy scale associated with the spin-orbit coupling controls the strength of the effect. More in particular, we find that the detailed behavior and the sign of the anisotropy depends on the underlying scattering mechanism. Assuming small angle scattering to be the dominant scattering mechanism our results agree with recent measurement on Si-MOSFET's in the vicinity of the metal-insulator transition.

Coherent transport in disordered metals out of equilibrium

We derive a formula for the quantum corrections to the electrical current for a metal out of equilibrium. In the limit of linear current-voltage characteristics our formula reproduces the well known Altshuler-Aronov correction to the conductivity of a disordered metal. The current formula is obtained by a direct diagrammatic approach, and is shown to agree with what is obtained within the Keldysh formulation of the non-linear sigma model. As an application we calculate the current of a mesoscopic wire. We find a current-voltage characteristics that scales with $eV/kT$, and calculate the different scaling curves for a wire in the hot-electron regime and in the regime of full non-equilibrium.

Non-linear conductivity and quantum interference in disordered metals

We report on a novel non-linear electric field effect in the conductivity of disordered conductors. We find that an electric field gives rise to dephasing in the particle-hole channel, which depresses the interference effects due to disorder and interaction and leads to a non-linear conductivity. This non-linear effect introduces a field dependent temperature scale $T_E$ and provides a microscopic mechanism for electric field scaling at the metal-insulator transition. We also study the magnetic field dependence of the non-linear conductivity and suggest possible ways to experimentally verify our predictions. These effects offer a new probe to test the role of quantum interference at the metal-insulator transition in disordered conductors.
