Measurements of $π^\pm$, K$^\pm$, p and $\bar{\textrm{p}}$ spectra in proton-proton interactions at 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 GeV/c with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS

Measurements of inclusive spectra and mean multiplicities of $π^\pm$, K$^\pm$, p and $\bar{\textrm{p}}$ produced in inelastic p+p interactions at incident projectile momenta of 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 GeV/c ($\sqrt{s} = $ 6.3, 7.7, 8.8, 12.3 and 17.3 GeV, respectively) were performed at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron using the large acceptance NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer. Spectra are presented as function of rapidity and transverse momentum and are compared to predictions of current models. The measurements serve as the baseline in the NA61/SHINE study of the properties of the onset of deconfinement and search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter.

Measurement of Meson Resonance Production in $π^{-} + $C Interactions at SPS energies

We present measurements of $ρ^0$, $ω$ and K$^{*0}$ spectra in $π^{-} + $C production interactions at 158 GeV/c and $ρ^0$ spectra at 350 GeV/c using the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. Spectra are presented as a function of the Feynman's variable $x_\text{F}$ in the range $0 < x_\text{F} < 1$ and $0 < x_\text{F} < 0.5$ for 158 GeV/c and 350 GeV/c respectively. Furthermore, we show comparisons with previous measurements and predictions of several hadronic interaction models. These measurements are essential for a better understanding of hadronic shower development and for improving the modeling of cosmic ray air showers.

Experiment Simulation Configurations Used in DUNE CDR

The LBNF/DUNE CDR describes the proposed physics program and experimental design at the conceptual design phase. Volume 2, entitled The Physics Program for DUNE at LBNF, outlines the scientific objectives and describes the physics studies that the DUNE collaboration will perform to address these objectives. The long-baseline physics sensitivity calculations presented in the DUNE CDR rely upon simulation of the neutrino beam line, simulation of neutrino interactions in the far detector, and a parameterized analysis of detector performance and systematic uncertainty. The purpose of this posting is to provide the results of these simulations to the community to facilitate phenomenological studies of long-baseline oscillation at LBNF/DUNE. Additionally, this posting includes GDML of the DUNE single-phase far detector for use in simulations. DUNE welcomes those interested in performing this work as members of the collaboration, but also recognizes the benefit of making these configurations readily available to the wider community.

Baseline optimization for the measurement of CP violation, mass hierarchy, and $θ_{23}$ octant in a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment

Next-generation long-baseline electron neutrino appearance experiments will seek to discover CP violation, determine the mass hierarchy and resolve the $θ_{23}$ octant. In light of the recent precision measurements of $θ_{13}$, we consider the sensitivity of these measurements in a study to determine the optimal baseline, including practical considerations regarding beam and detector performance. We conclude that a detector at a baseline of at least 1000 km in a wide-band muon neutrino beam is the optimal configuration.

Breakdown voltage of metal-oxide resistors in liquid argon

We characterized a sample of metal-oxide resistors and measured their breakdown voltage in liquid argon by applying high voltage (HV) pulses over a 3 second period. This test mimics the situation in a HV-divider chain when a breakdown occurs and the voltage across resistors rapidly rise from the static value to much higher values. All resistors had higher breakdown voltages in liquid argon than their vendor ratings in air at room temperature. Failure modes range from full destruction to coating damage. In cases where breakdown was not catastrophic, subsequent breakdown voltages were lower in subsequent measuring runs. One resistor type withstands 131\,kV pulses, the limit of the test setup.

Liquid Argon Dielectric Breakdown Studies with the MicroBooNE Purification System

The proliferation of liquid argon time projection chamber detectors makes the characterization of the dielectric properties of liquid argon a critical task. To improve understanding of these properties, a systematic study of the breakdown electric field in liquid argon was conducted using a dedicated cryostat connected to the MicroBooNE cryogenic system at Fermilab. An electrode sphere-plate geometry was implemented using spheres with diameters of 1.3 mm, 5.0 mm, and 76 mm. The MicroBooNE cryogenic system allowed measurements to be taken at a variety of electronegative contamination levels ranging from a few parts-per-million to tens of parts-per- trillion. The cathode-anode distance was varied from 0.1 mm to 2.5 cm. The results demonstrate a geometric dependence of the electric field strength at breakdown. This study is the first time that the dependence of the breakdown field on stressed cathode area has been shown for liquid argon.

LAr1-ND: Testing Neutrino Anomalies with Multiple LArTPC Detectors at Fermilab

This white paper describes LAr1-ND and the compelling physics it brings first in Phase 1 and next towards the full LAr1 program. In addition, LAr1-ND serves as a key step in the development toward large-scale LArTPC detectors. Its development goals will encompass testing existing and possibly innovative designs for LBNE while at the same time providing a training ground for teams working towards LBNE combining timely neutrino physics with experience in detector development.

Report of the US long baseline neutrino experiment study

This report provides the results of an extensive and important study of the potential for a U.S. scientific program that will extend our knowledge of neutrino oscillations well beyond what can be anticipated from ongoing and planned experiments worldwide. The program examined here has the potential to provide the U.S. particle physics community with world leading experimental capability in this intensely interesting and active field of fundamental research. Furthermore, this capability could be unique compared to anywhere else in the world because of the available beam intensity and baseline distances. The present study was initially commissioned in April 2006 by top research officers of Brookhaven National Laboratory and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and, as the study evolved, it also provided responses to questions formulated and addressed to the study group by the Neutrino Scientific Advisory Committee (NuSAG) of the U.S. DOE and NSF. The participants in the study, its Charge and history, plus the study results and conclusions are provided in this report and its appendices. A summary of the conclusions is provided in the Executive Summary.

Measurement of Decay Parameters for $Ξ^{-} \to Λπ^{-}$ Decay

Based on 1.35 million polarized $Ξ^{-}$ events, we measure the parameter $ϕ_Ξ$ to be $-1.61^{\circ} \pm 2.66^{\circ} \pm 0.37^{\circ}$ for $Ξ^{-} \to Λπ^{-}$ decay. New results for the parameters $β_Ξ$ and $γ_Ξ$ are also presented. Assuming that the CP-violating phase-shift difference is negligible, we deduce the strong phase-shift difference between the P-wave and S-wave amplitudes of the $Λπ$ final state to be $3.17^{\circ} \pm 5.28^{\circ} \pm 0.73^{\circ}$. This strong phase-shift difference reduces the theoretical uncertainty in estimating the level of CP violation in $Ξ$-hyperon decay.

Search for Direct CP Violation in Non-Leptonic Decays of Charged $Ξ$ and $Λ$ Hyperons

A search for direct CP violation in the non-leptonic decays of hyperons has been performed. In comparing the product of the decay parameters, $α_Ξα_Λ$, in terms of an asymmetry parameter, $A_{ΞΛ}$, between hyperons and anti-hyperons in the charged $Ξ\to Λπ$ and $Λ\to p π$ decay sequence, we found no evidence of direct CP violations. The parameter $A_{ΞΛ}$ was measured to be $0.012 \pm 0.014$.
