Interface ferromagnetism and orbital reconstruction in BiFeO3- La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 heterostructures

We report the formation of a novel ferromagnetic state in the antiferromagnet BiFeO3 at the interface with La0.7Sr0.3MnO3. Using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at Mn and Fe L2,3-edges, we discovered that the development of this ferromagnetic spin structure is strongly associated with the onset of a significant exchange bias. Our results demonstrate that the magnetic state is directly related with an electronic orbital reconstruction at the interface, which is supported by the linearly polarized x-ray absorption measurement at oxygen K-edge.

Suppression of Octahedral Tilts and Associated Changes of Electronic Properties at Epitaxial Oxide Heterostructure Interfaces

Epitaxial oxide interfaces with broken translational symmetry have emerged as a central paradigm behind the novel behaviors of oxide superlattices. Here, we use scanning transmission electron microscopy to demonstrate a direct, quantitative unit-cell-by-unit-cell mapping of lattice parameters and oxygen octahedral rotations across the BiFeO3-La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 interface to elucidate how the change of crystal symmetry is accommodated. Combined with low-loss electron energy loss spectroscopy imaging, we demonstrate a mesoscopic antiferrodistortive phase transition and elucidate associated changes in electronic properties in a thin layer directly adjacent to the interface.

Evidence for effective thermal boundary resistance from magnon/phonon disequilibrium

We use the time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TRMOKE) to measure the local temperature and heat flow dynamics in ferromagnetic SrRuO3 thin films. After heating by a pump pulse, the film temperature decays exponentially, indicating that the heat flow out of the film is limited by the film/substrate interface. We show that this behavior is consistent with an effective boundary resistance resulting from disequilibrium between the spin and phonon temperatures in the film.

Understanding the nature of electronic effective mass in double-doped SrTiO$_{3}$

We present an approach to tune the effective mass in an oxide semiconductor by a double doping mechanism. We demonstrate this in a model oxide system Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$TiO$_{3-δ}$, where we can tune the effective mass ranging from 6--20$\mathrm{m_e}$ as a function of filling or carrier concentration and the scattering mechanism, which are dependent on the chosen lanthanum and oxygen vacancy concentrations. The effective mass values were calculated from the Boltzmann transport equation using the measured transport properties of thin films of Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$TiO$_{3-δ}$. Our method, which shows that the effective mass decreases with carrier concentration, provides a means for understanding the nature of transport processes in oxides, which typically have large effective mass and low electron mobility, contrary to the tradional high mobility semiconductors.

Spin-Charge-Lattice Coupling through Resonant Multi-Magnon Excitations in Multiferroic BiFeO3

Spin-charge-lattice coupling mediated by multi-magnon processes is demonstrated in multiferroic BiFeO3. Experimental evidence of two and three magnons excitations as well as multimagnon coupling at electronic energy scales and high temperatures are reported. Temperature dependent Raman experiments show up to five resonant enhancements of the 2-magnon excitation below the Neel temperature. These are shown to be collective interactions between on-site Fe d-d electronic resonance, phonons and multimagnons

Observation of ferromagnetic resonance in strontium ruthenate (SrRuO3)

We report the observation of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) in SrRuO3 using the time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. The FMR oscillations in the time-domain appear in response to a sudden, optically induced change in the direction of easy-axis anistropy. The high FMR frequency, 250 GHz, and large Gilbert damping parameter, alpha ~ 1, are consistent with strong spin-orbit coupling. We find that the parameters associated with the magnetization dynamics, including alpha, have a non-monotonic temperature dependence, suggestive of a link to the anomalous Hall effect.

Polarization dependent interface properties of ferroelectric Schottky barriers studied by soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy

We applied soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy to study the Ti L-edge in ferroelectric capacitors using a modified total electron yield method. The inner photo currents and the X-ray absorption spectra were polarization state dependent. The results are explained on the basis of photo electric effects and the inner potential in the ferroelectric capacitors as a result of back-to-back Schottky barriers superimposed by the potential due to the depolarization field. In general, the presented method offers the opportunity to investigate the electronic structure of buried metal-insulator and metal-semiconductor interfaces in thin film devices. Critical thickness and orbital ordering in ultrathin La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 films

Detailed analysis of transport, magnetism and x-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements on ultrathin La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 films with thicknesses from 3 to 70 unit cells resulted in the identification of a lower critical thickness for a non-metallic, non-ferromagnetic layer at the interface with the SrTiO3 (001) substrate of only 3 unit cells (~12 Angstrom). Furthermore, linear dichroism measurements demonstrate the presence of a preferred (x2-y2) in-plane orbital ordering for all layer thicknesses without any orbital reconstruction at the interface. A crucial requirement for the accurate study of these ultrathin films is a controlled growth process, offering the coexistence of layer-by-layer growth and bulk-like magnetic/transport properties.

Nanoscale control of exchange bias with BiFeO3 thin films

We demonstrate a direct correlation between the domain structure of multiferroic BiFeO3 thin films and exchange bias of Co0.9Fe0.1/BiFeO3 heterostructures. Two distinct types of interactions, an enhancement of the coercive field (exchange enhancement) and an enhancement of the coercive field combined with large shifts of the hysteresis loop (exchange bias), have been observed in these heterostructures, which depend directly on the type and crystallography of the nanoscale (2 nm) domain walls in the BiFeO3 film. We show that the magnitude of the exchange bias interaction scales with the length of 109 degree ferroelectric domain walls in the BiFeO3 thin films which have been probed via piezoresponse force microscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism.

Anomalously large measured thermoelectric power factor in Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$TiO$_3$ thin films due to SrTiO$_3$ substrate reduction

We report the observation that thermoelectric thin-films of La-doped SrTiO3 grown on SrTiO3 substrates yield anomalously high values of thermopower to give extraordinary values of power factor at 300K. Thin-films of Sr0.98La0.02TiO3, grown via pulsed laser deposition at low temperature and low pressure (450C, 10-7Torr), do not yield similarly high values when grown on other substrates. The thin-film growth induces oxygen reduction in the SrTiO3 crystals, doping the substrate n-type. It is found that the backside resistance of the SrTiO3 substrates is as low (~12ohm/square) as it is on the film-side after film growth.

Probing the role of single defects on the thermodynamics of electric-field induced phase transitions

The kinetics and thermodynamics of first order transitions is universally controlled by defects that act as nucleation sites and pinning centers. Here we demonstrate that defect-domain interactions during polarization reversal processes in ferroelectric materials result in a pronounced fine structure in electromechanical hysteresis loops. Spatially-resolved imaging of a single defect center in multiferroic BiFeO3 thin film is achieved, and the defect size and built-in field are determined self-consistently from the single-point spectroscopic measurements and spatially-resolved images. This methodology is universal and can be applied to other reversible bias-induced transitions including electrochemical reactions.

Linear and Nonlinear Optical constants of BiFeO_3

Using spectroscopic ellipsometry, the refractive index and absorption versus wavelength of the ferroelectric antiferromagnet Bismuth Ferrite, BiFeO_3 is reported. The material has a direct band-gap at 442 nm wavelength (2.81 eV). Using optical second harmonic generation, the nonlinear optical coefficients were determined to be d_15/d_22 = 0.20 +/- 0.01, d_31/d_22 = 0.35 +/- 0.02, d_33/d_22 = -11.4 +/- 0.20 and |d_22| = 298.4 +/- 6.1 pm/V at a fundamental wavelength of 800 nm.

Two-phonon coupling to the antiferromagnetic phase transition in multiferroic BiFeO3

A prominent band centered at around 1000-1300 cm-1 and associated with resonant enhancement of two-phonon Raman scattering is reported in multiferroic BiFeO3 thin films and single crystals. A strong anomaly in this band occurs at the antiferromagnetic Neel temperature. This band is composed of three peaks, assigned to 2A4, 2E8, and 2E9 Raman modes. While all three peaks were found to be sensitive to the antiferromagnetic phase transition, the 2E8 mode, in particular, nearly disappears at TN on heating, indicating a strong spin-two phonon coupling in BiFeO3.

Local Dielectric Measurements of BaTiO3-CoFe2O4 Nano-composites Through Microwave Microscopy

We report on linear and non-linear dielectric property measurements of BaTiO3 - CoFe2O4 (BTO-CFO) ferroelectro-magnetic nano-composites and pure BaTiO3 and CoFe2O4 samples with Scanning Near Field Microwave Microscopy. The permittivity scanning image with spatial resolution on the micro-meter scale shows that the nano-composites have very uniform quality with an effective dielectric constant ε_r = 140 +/- 6.4 at 3.8 GHz and room temperature. The temperature dependence of dielectric permittivity shows that the Curie temperature of pure BTO was shifted by the clamping effect of the MgO substrate, whereas the Curie temperature shift of the BTO ferroelectric phase in BTO-CFO composites is less pronounced, and if it exists at all, would be mainly caused by the CFO. Non-linear dielectric measurements of BTO-CFO show good ferroelectric properties from BTO.

Metal-Ferroelectric-Metal structures with Schottky contacts: II. Analysis of the experimental current-voltage and capacitance-voltage characteristics of Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 thin films

A modified model of metal-semiconductor contacts is applied to analyze the capacitance-voltage and current-voltage characteristics of metal-ferroelectric-metal structures. The ferroelectric polarization is considered as a sheet of surface charge situated at a fixed distance from the interface. The presumable high concentration of structural defects acting as active electric traps is taken into account by introducing a deep acceptor-like level. The model is applied on a set of metal-PZT--metal samples with different Zr/Ti ratios, deposited by different methods, and having different thickness, electrode materials, and electrode areas. The concentration of the free carriers, the fixed charge density in the depletion region, the distance between polarization charge and the physical interface, the potential barrier were estimated.

Percolative Ferromagnetism in Anatase Co:TiO2

We revisit the most widely investigated and controversial oxide diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS), Co:TiO2, with a new high temperature film growth, and show that the corresponding material is not only an intrinsic DMS ferromagnet, but also supports a percolative mechanism of ferromagnetism. We establish the uniformity of dopant distribution across the film cross section by Z-contrast imaging via scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) at spatial resolution of 0.4 nm and the oxidized 2+ valence state of cobalt by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The dependence of magnetic properties on cobalt concentration is consistent with the defect polaron percolation model. The peculiar increase in the transport activation energy above a specific cobalt concentration further emphasizes the polaron contribution to magnetic order.

Evidence for power-law frequency dependence of intrinsic dielectric response in the CaCu$_{3}$Ti$_{4}$O$_{12}$

We investigated the dielectric response of CaCu$_3$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$ (CCTO) thin films grown epitaxially on LaAlO$_3$ (001) substrates by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). The dielectric response of the films was found to be strongly dominated by a power-law in frequency, typical of materials with localized hopping charge carriers, in contrast to the Debye-like response of the bulk material. The film conductivity decreases with annealing in oxygen, and it suggests that oxygen deficit is a cause of the relatively high film conductivity. With increase of the oxygen content, the room temperature frequency response of the CCTO thin films changes from the response indicating the presence of some relatively low conducting capacitive layers to purely power law, and then towards frequency independent response with a relative dielectric constant $ε'\sim10^2$. The film conductance and dielectric response decrease upon decrease of the temperature with dielectric response being dominated by the power law frequency dependence. Below $\sim$80 K, the dielectric response of the films is frequency independent with $ε'$ close to $10^2$. The results provide another piece of evidence for an extrinsic, Maxwell-Wagner type, origin of the colossal dielectric response of the bulk CCTO material, connected with electrical inhomogeneity of the bulk material.

Electric Field Effect in Diluted Magnetic Insulator Anatase Co:TiO2

An external electric field induced reversible modulation of room temperature magnetic moment is achieved in an epitaxial and insulating thin film of dilutely cobalt-doped anatase TiO2. This first demonstration of electric field effect in any oxide based diluted ferromagnet is realized in a high quality epitaxial heterostructure of PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3/Co:TiO2/SrRuO3 grown on (001) LaAlO3. The observed effect, which is about 15% in strength in a given heterostructure, can be modulated over several cycles. Possible mechanisms for electric field induced modulation of insulating ferromagnetism are discussed.
