High-frequency radio observations of the Kuehr sample and the epoch-dependent luminosity function of the flat-spectrum quasars

We discuss our ATCA 18.5 and 22 GHz flux density measurements of the Southern extragalactic sources in the complete 5-GHz sample of Kuehr et al. (1981). The high-frequency (5-18.5 GHz) spectral indices of steep-spectrum sources for which we have 18.5-GHz data (66% of the complete sample) are systematically steeper than the low-frequency (2.7-5 GHz) ones, and there is evidence of an anti-correlation of high-frequency spectral index with luminosity. The completeness of the 18.5-GHz data is much higher (89%) for flat-spectrum sources (mostly quasars), which also exhibit a spectral steepening. Taking advantage of the almost complete redshift information on flat-spectrum quasars, we have estimated their 5-GHz luminosity function in several redshift bins. The results confirm that their radio luminosity density peaks at z_peak \simeq 2.5 but do not provide evidence for deviations from pure luminosity evolution as hinted at by other data sets. A comparison of our 22-GHz flux density with WMAP K-band data for flat-spectrum sources suggests that WMAP flux densities may be low by a median factor of \simeq 1.2. The extrapolations of 5-GHz counts and luminosity functions of flat-spectrum radio quasars using the observed distribution of the 5-18.5 GHz spectral indices match those derived directly from WMAP data, indicating that the high-frequency WMAP survey does not detect any large population of FSRQs with anomalous spectra.

Orbifolding the Twistor String

The D-instanton expansion of the topological B-model on the supermanifold CP(3|4) reproduces the perturbative expansion of N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory. In this paper we consider orbifolds in the fermionic directions of CP(3|4). This operation breaks the SU(4) R-symmetry group, reducing the amount of supersymmetry of the gauge theory. As specific examples we take N=1 and N=2 orbifolds and obtain the corresponding superconformal quiver theories. We discuss the D1 instanton expansion in this context and explicitly compute some amplitudes.

Design considerations for future DAFNE upgrade

The Frascati F-Factory DAFNE has been delivering luminosity to the KLOE, DEAR and FINUDA experiments since year 2000. Since April 2004 the KLOE run has been resumed and recently peak luminosity of 1.0x1032 cm-2s-1 and integrated luminosity of 6.2 pb-1/day have been achieved. The scientific program of the three high-energy experiments sharing DAFNE operation will be completed approximately by the end of year 2006. A scientific program for DAFNE beyond that date has not been defined yet and it is matter of discussion in the high-energy physics and accelerator physics communities. In this paper we present some future scenarios for DAFNE, discussing the expected ultimate performances of the machine as it is now and addressing the design for an energy and/or luminosity upgrade. The options presented in the following are not exhaustive and they are intended to give a glance of what is doable using the existing infrastructures.

Surveys of extragalactic sources with Planck

Although the primary goal of ESA's Planck mission is to produce high resolution maps of the temperature and polarization anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), its high-sensitivity all-sky surveys of extragalactic sources at 9 frequencies in the range 30--860 GHz will constitute a major aspect of its science products. In particular, Planck surveys will provide key information on several highly interesting radio source populations, such as Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars, BL Lac objects, and, especially, extreme GHz Peaked Spectrum sources, thought to correspond to the very earliest phases of the evolution of radio sources. Above 100 GHz, Planck will provide the first all-sky surveys, that are expected to supply rich samples of highly gravitationally amplified dusty proto-galaxies and large samples of candidate proto-clusters at z~2-3, thus shedding light on the evolution of large scale structure across the cosmic epoch when dark energy should start dominating the cosmic dynamics.

DAFNE operation with the FINUDA experiment

DAFNE operation restarted in September 2003, after a six month shut-down for the installation of FINUDA, a magnetic detector dedicated to the study of hypernuclear physics. FINUDA is the third experiment running on DAFNE and operates while keeping on place the other detector KLOE. During the shut-down both Interaction Regions have been equipped with remotely controlled quadrupoles in order to operate at different solenoid fields. Among many other hardware upgrades one of the most significant is the reshaping of the wiggler pole profile to improve the field quality and the machine dynamic aperture. Commissioning of the collider in the new configuration has been completed in short time. The peak luminosity delivered to FINUDA has reached 6 10^31 s-1cm-2, with a daily integrated value close to 4 pb-1.

First results from the ATCA 18 GHz pilot survey

As a pilot study for the first all-sky radio survey at short wavelengths, we have observed 1216 sq. deg. of the southern sky at 18GHz (16mm) using a novel wide-band (3.4GHz bandwidth) analogue correlator on one baseline of the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). We scanned a region of sky between declination -71 and -59 degrees with an rms noise level of 15mJy. Follow-up radio imaging of candidate sources above a 4 sigma detection limit of 60mJy resulted in 221 confirmed detections, for which we have measured accurate positions and flux densities. For extragalactic sources, the survey is roughly 70% complete at a flux density of 126mJy and 95% complete above 300mJy. Almost half the detected sources lie within a few degrees of the Galactic plane, but there are 123 sources with |b|>5 degrees which can be assumed to be extragalactic. The differential source counts for extragalactic sources in the range 0.1Jy < S_{18GHz} < 3Jy are well fitted by a relation of the form n(S)=57(S/{Jy})^{-2.2\pm0.2} [Jy^-1 sr^-1], in good agreement with the 15GHz counts published by Taylor et al. (2001) and Waldram et al. (2003). Over 70% of the extragalactic sources have a flat radio spectrum (α_{0.843}^{18}> -0.5, S_ν\proptoν^α), and 29% have inverted radio spectra (α_{0.843}^{18}> 0). The optical identification rate is high: 51% of the extragalactic sources are identified with stellar objects (candidate QSOs), 22% with galaxies and only 27% with faint optical objects or blank fields.

Impact of foregrounds on Cosmic Microwave Background maps

We discuss the possible impact of astrophysical foregrounds on three recent exciting results of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments: the WMAP measurements of the temperature-polarization (TE) correlation power spectrum, the detection of CMB polarization fluctuations on degree scales by the DASI experiment, and the excess power on arcminute scales reported by the CBI and BIMA groups. A big contribution from the Galactic synchrotron emission to the TE power spectrum on large angular scales is indeed expected, in the lower frequency WMAP channels, based on current, albeit very uncertain, models; at higher frequencies the rapid decrease of the synchrotron signal may be, to some extent, compensated by polarized dust emission. Recent measurements of polarization properties of extragalactic radio sources at high radio frequency indicate that their contamination of the CMB polarization on degree scales at 30 GHz is substantially below the expected CMB E-mode amplitude. Adding the synchrotron contribution, we estimate that the overall foreground contamination of the signal detected by DASI may be significant but not dominant. The excess power on arc-min scales detected by the BIMA experiment may be due to galactic-scale Sunyaev-Zeldovich effects, if the proto-galactic gas is heated to its virial temperature and its cooling time is comparable to the Hubble time at the epoch of galaxy formation. A substantial contamination by radio sources of the signal reported by the CBI group on scales somewhat larger than BIMA's cannot be easily ruled out.

Instanton Calculations for N=1/ 2 super Yang-Mills Theory

We study (anti-) instantons in super Yang-Mills theories defined on a non anticommutative superspace. The instanton solution that we consider is the same as in ordinary SU(2) N=1 super Yang-Mills, but the anti-instanton receives corrections to the U(1) part of the connection which depend quadratically on fermionic coordinates, and linearly on the deformation parameter C. By substituting the exact solution into the classical Lagrangian the topological charge density receives a new contribution which is quadratic in C and quartic in the fermionic zero-modes. The topological charge turns out to be zero. We perform an expansion around the exact classical solution in presence of a fermionic background and calculate the full superdeterminant contributing to the one-loop partition function. We find that the one-loop partition function is not modified with respect to the usual N=1 super Yang-Mills.

High-frequency polarization properties of southern Kuhr sources

We have carried out observations at 18.5 GHz with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) of 250 out of the 258 Southern extragalactic sources in the complete 5 GHz 1 Jy sample by Kühr et al. (1981). In this paper we focus on the polarization properties of this sample, while other properties will be addressed in a future paper. In our analysis we subdivide the sample into flat and steep spectrum sources following Stickel et al. (1994) classification, where spectral indices were measured between 2.7 and 5 GHz. The polarized flux has been measured with a S/N > 5 for 170 sources (114 flat-spectrum and 56 steep-spectrum) and upper limits have been set for additional 27 sources (12 flat-spectrum and 15 steep-spectrum). The median polarization degree at 18.5 GHz for the flat-spectrum sub-sample is Π_{18.5}\simeq 2.7%, about a factor of 2 higher than at 1.4 GHz (Π_{1.4}\simeq 1.4%, based on NVSS data). For flat-spectrum sources we find a weak correlation between Π_{18.5} and the high frequency (5--18.5 GHz) spectral index. No evidences of significant correlations of the polarization degree with other source properties are found. The median value of Π_{18.5} for the steep spectrum sources is \simeq 4.8%, but our sample might be biased against extended sources. We find indications of a correlation between Π_{18.5} and both the low frequency (1.4--5 GHz) and the high frequency (5--18.5 GHz) spectral indices. An important application of this work is the possibility to estimate the contamination of CMB polarization maps by extragalactic radio sources. Our results indicate that such contamination is within the range of estimates given by Mesa et al. (2002).

B1524-136: A CSS quasar with two-sided radio jets

We present MERLIN, global VLBI and VLBA observations of the high-luminosity, compact steep-spectrum quasar B1524$-$136 at cm wavelengths. These observations reveal well-defined radio jets on both sides of the active nucleus, a situation which is almost unique amongst high-luminosity radio quasars. However, the radio jets on opposite sides are very dissimilar, and the overall radio structure appears highly distorted. We discuss possible implications of these observations.

Milli-arcsecond scale Rotation Measure in the CSS Quasars 0548+165 and 1524-136

Two Compact Steep-spectrum Sources (CSSs), 0548+165 and 1524-136, chosen from a list of CSSs with polarization percentages that decrease with decreasing frequency and high rotation measure values (RM > 450 rad/m**2) on arcsecond scales, were observed with the VLBA at 4.9 and 8.4 GHz. RM values up to ~10**4 rad/m**2 were found in several regions along the jets in both sources. We suggest that a thin screen of magneto-ionic material with about 1 kpc thickness is responsible for these high RMs. The observed depolarization may be due to beam depolarization and/or inhomogeneities in the magnetic field.

The 0.1-100 keV spectral shape and variability of Mkn421 in high state

The results of a BeppoSAX TOO observation of the BL Lac object Mkn421 during a high intensity state are reported and compared with monitoring X-ray data collected with the BeppoSAX Wide Field Cameras (WFC) and the RXTE All Sky Monitor(ASM). The 0.1-100 keV spectrum of Mkn421 shows continuous convex curvature that can be interpreted as the high-energy end of the synchrotron emission. The source shows significant short-term temporal and spectral variability, which can be interpreted in terms of synchrotron cooling. The comparison of our results with those of previous observations when the source was a factor 3-5 fainter shows evidence for strong spectral variability, with the maximum of the synchrotron power shifting to higher energy during high states. This behaviour suggest an increase in the number of energetic electrons during high states.

Homogeneous Conformal String Backgrounds

We present exact solutions characterised by Bianchi-type I,II,III,V,VI four-dimensional metric, space-independent dilaton, and vanishing torsion background, for the low energy string effective action with zero central charge deficit. We show that, in such a context, curvature singularities cannot be avoided, except for the trivial case of flat spacetime and constant dilaton. We also provide a further example of the failure of the standard prescription for connecting conformal string backgrounds through duality transformations associated to non-semisimple, non-Abelian isometry group.
