Identifying the multiferroic phase of doped CuFeO_2 using inelastic neutron scattering

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements that provide a distinct dynamical "fingerprint" for the multiferroic ground state of 3.5% Ga-doped CuFeO_2. The complex ground state is stabilized by the displacement of the oxygen atoms, which are also responsible for the multiferroic coupling predicted by Arima. By comparing the observed and calculated spectrum of spin excitations, we conclude that the magnetic ground state is a distorted screw-type spin configuration that requires a mechanism for magnetoelectric coupling different from the generally accepted spin-current model.

Spin Rotation Technique for Non-Collinear Magnetic Systems: Application to the Generalized Villain Model

This work develops a new generalized technique for determining the static and dynamic properties of any non-collinear magnetic system. By rotating the spin operators into the local spin reference frame, we evaluate the zeroth, first, and second order terms in a Holstein-Primakoff expansion, and through a Green's functions approach, we determine the structure factor intensities for the spin-wave frequencies. To demonstrate this technique, we examine the spin-wave dynamics of the generalized Villain model with a varying interchain interaction. The new interchain coupling expands the overall phase diagram with the realization of two non-equivalent canted spin configurations. The rotational Holstein-Primakoff expansion provides both analytical and numerical results for the spin dynamics and intensities of these phases.

Critical Anisotropies of a Geometrically-Frustrated Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnet

This work examines the critical anisotropy required for the local stability of the collinear ground states of a geometrically-frustrated triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TLA). Using a Holstein-Primakoff expansion, we calculate the spin-wave frequencies for the 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8-sublattice (SL) ground states of a TLA with up to third neighbor interactions. Local stability requires that all spin-wave frequencies are real and positive. The 2, 4, and 8-SL phases break up into several regions where the critical anisotropy is a different function of the exchange parameters. We find that the critical anisotropy is a continuous function everywhere except across the 2-SL/3-SL and 3-SL/4-SL phase boundaries, where the 3-SL phase has the higher critical anisotropy.

Spin-Wave Instabilities and Non-Collinear Magnetic Phases of a Geometrically-Frustrated Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnet

This paper examines the relation between the spin-wave instabilities of collinear magnetic phases and the resulting non-collinear phases for a geometrically-frustrated triangular-lattice antiferromagnet in the high spin limit. Using a combination of phenomenological and Monte-Carlo techniques, we demonstrate that the instability wave-vector with the strongest intensity in the collinear phase determines the wave-vector of a cycloid or the dominant elastic peak of a more complex non-collinear phase. Our results are related to the observed multi-ferroic phase of Al-doped CuFeO$_2$.

Hybrid Quantum-Classical Monte-Carlo Study of a Molecule-Based Magnet

Using a Monte Carlo (MC) method, we study an effective model for the Fe(II)Fe(III) bimetallic oxalates. Within a hybrid quantum-classical MC algorithm, the Heisenberg S=2 and $S'=5/2$ spins on the Fe(II) and Fe(III) sites are updated using a quantum MC loop while the Ising-like orbital angular momenta on the Fe(II) sites are updated using a single-spin classical MC flip. The effective field acting on the orbital angular momenta depends on the quantum state of the system. We find that the mean-field phase diagram for the model is surprisingly robust with respect to fluctuations. In particular, the region displaying two compensation points shifts and shrinks but remains finite.

The Collinear Magnetic Phases of the Geometrically-Frustrated Antiferromagnet CuFeO$_2$: The Importance of Stacking

The correct stacking of hexagonal layers is used to obtain accurate estimates for the exchange and anisotropy parameters of the geometrically-frustrated antiferromagnet CuFeO$_2$. Those parameters are highly constrained by the stability of a collinear metamagnetic phase between fields of 13.5 and 20 T. Constrained fits of the spin-wave frequencies of the collinear $\uudd $ phase below 7 T are used to identify the magnetic unit cell of the metamagnetic $\uuudd $ phase, which contains two hexagonal layers and 10 Fe$^{3+}$ spins.

Magnetic Interaction in the Geometrically Frustrated Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet $\rm CuFeO_2$

The spin wave excitations of the geometrically frustrated triangular lattice antiferromagnet (TLA) $\rm CuFeO_2$ have been measured using high resolution inelastic neutron scattering. Antiferromagnetic interactions up to third nearest neighbors in the ab plane (J_1, J_2, J_3, with $J_2/J_1 \approx 0.44$ and $J_3/J_1 \approx 0.57$), as well as out-of-plane coupling (J_z, with $J_z/J_1 \approx 0.29$) are required to describe the spin wave dispersion relations, indicating a three dimensional character of the magnetic interactions. Two energy dips in the spin wave dispersion occur at the incommensurate wavevectors associated with multiferroic phase, and can be interpreted as dynamic precursors to the magnetoelectric behavior in this system.

Short-Range Ordered Phase of the Double-Exchange Model in Infinite Dimensions

Using dynamical mean-field theory, we have evaluated the magnetic instabilities and T=0 phase diagram of the double-exchange model on a Bethe lattice in infinite dimensions. In addition to ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AF) phases, we also study a class of disordered phases with magnetic short-range order (SRO). In the weak-coupling limit, a SRO phase has a higher transition temperature than the AF phase for all fillings p below 1 and can even have a higher transition temperature than the FM phase. At T=0 and for small Hund's coupling J_H, a SRO state has lower energy than either the FM or AF phases for 0.26\le p < 1. Phase separation is absent in the J_H --> 0 limit but appears for any non-zero value of J_H.

Magnetic Instabilities and Phase Diagram of the Double-Exchange Model in Infinite Dimensions

Dynamical mean-field theory is used to study the magnetic instabilities and phase diagram of the double-exchange (DE) model with Hund's coupling J_H >0 in infinite dimensions. In addition to ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AF) phases, the DE model supports a broad class of short-range ordered (SRO) states with extensive entropy and short-range magnetic order. For any site on the Bethe lattice, the correlation parameter q of a SRO state is given by the average q= , where theta_i is the angle between any spin and its neighbors. Unlike the FM (q=0) and AF (q=1) transitions, the transition temperature of a SRO state (T_{SRO}) with 0 0 but appears for J_H\neq 0. For p near 1, PS occurs between an AF with p=1 and either a SRO or a FM phase. The stability of a SRO state at T=0 can be understood by examining the interacting DOS,which is gapped for any nonzero J_H in an AF but only when J_H exceeds a critical value in a SRO state.

Dynamics of Impurity and Valence Bands in GaMnAs within the Dynamical Mean Field Approximation

We calculate the density-of-states and the spectral function of GaMnAs within the dynamical mean-field approximation. Our model includes the competing effects of the strong spin-orbit coupling on the J=3/2 GaAs hole bands and the exchange interaction between the magnetic ions and the itinerant holes. We study the quasi-particle and impurity bands in the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases for different values of impurity-hole coupling at the Mn doping of x=0.05. By analyzing the anisotropic angular distribution of the impurity band carriers at T=0, we conclude that the carrier polarization is optimal when the carriers move along the direction parallel to the average magnetization.

Spin Dynamics of a Canted Antiferromagnet in a Magnetic Field

The spin dynamics of a canted antiferromagnet with a quadratic spin-wave dispersion near $\vq =0$ is shown to possess a unique signature. When the anisotropy gap is negligible, the spin-wave stiffness $\dsw (\vq, B) = (ω_{\vq}-B)/q^2$ depends on whether the limit of zero field or zero wavevector is taken first. Consequently, $\dsw $ is a strong function of magnetic field at a fixed wavevector. Even in the presence of a sizeable anisotropy gap, the field dependence of both $\dsw $ and the gap energy distinguishes a canted antiferromagnet from a phase-separated mixture containing both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic regions.

Spin Dynamics of Double-Exchange Manganites with Magnetic Frustration

This work examines the effects of magnetic frustration due to competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions on the spin dynamics of the double-exchange model. When the local moments are non-colinear, a charge-density wave forms because the electrons prefer to sit on lines of sites that are coupled ferromagnetically. With increasing hopping energy, the local spins become aligned and the average spin-wave stiffness increases. Phase separation is found only within a narrow range of hopping energies. Results of this work are applied to the field-induced jump in the spin-wave stiffness observed in the manganite Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ with $0.3 \le x \le 0.4$.

Magnetism in semiconductors: A dynamical mean field study of ferromagnetism in Ga_{1-x}Mn_xAs

We employ the dynamical mean field approximation to perform a systematic study of magnetism in Ga_{1-x}Mn_xAs. Our model incorporates the effects of the strong spin-orbit coupling on the J=3/2 GaAs valence bands and of the exchange interaction between the randomly distributed magnetic ions and the itinerant holes. The ferromagnetic phase transition temperature T_c is obtained for different values of the impurity-hole coupling J_c and of the hole concentration n_h at the Mn doping of x=0.05. We also investigate the temperature dependence of the local magnetization and spin polarization of the holes. By comparing our results with those for a single band Hamiltonian in which the spin-orbit coupling is switched off, we conclude that the spin-orbit coupling in Ga_{1-x}Mn_xAs gives rise to frustration in the ferromagnetic order, strengthening recent findings by Zarand and Janko (Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 047201 (2002)).

Spin Diffusion in Double-Exchange Manganites

The theoretical study of spin diffusion in double-exchange magnets by means of dynamical mean-field theory is presented. We demonstrate that the spin-diffusion coefficient becomes independent of the Hund's coupling JH in the range of parameters JH*S >> W >> T, W being the bandwidth, relevant to colossal magnetoresistive manganites in the metallic part of their phase diagram. Our study reveals a close correspondence as well as some counterintuitive differences between the results on Bethe and hypercubic lattices. Our results are in accord with neutron scattering data and with previous theoretical work for high temperatures.

Slater Transition in the Pyrochlore Cd2Os2O7

Cd2Os2O7 crystallizes in the pyrochlore structure and undergoes a metal-insulator transition (MIT) near 226 K. We have characterized the MIT in Cd2Os2O7 using X-ray diffraction, resistivity at ambient and high pressure, specific heat, magnetization, thermopower, Hall coefficient, and thermal conductivity. Both single crystals and polycrystalline material were examined. The MIT is accompanied by no change in crystal symmetry and a change in unit cell volume of less than 0.05%. The resistivity shows little temperature dependence above 226 K, but increases by 3 orders of magnitude as the sample is cooled to 4 K. The specific heat anomaly resembles a mean-field transition and shows no hysteresis or latent heat. Cd2Os2O7 orders magnetically at the MIT. The magnetization data is consistent with antiferromagnetic order, with a small parasitic ferromagnetic component. The Hall and Seebeck coefficients are consistent with a semiconducting gap opening at the Fermi energy at the MIT. We have also performed electronic structure calculations on Cd2Os2O7. These calculations indicate that Cd2Os2O7 is metallic, with a sharp peak in the density of states at the Fermi energy. We intepret the data in terms of a Slater transition. In this scenario, the MIT is produced by a doubling of the unit cell due to the establishment of antiferromagnetic order. A Slater transition-unlike a Mott transition-is predicted to be continuous, with a semiconducting energy gap opening much like a BCS gap as the material is cooled below $T_{MIT}$.
