Quantum Critical Point in Electron-Doped Cuprates

We analyze doping dependent spectral intensities and Fermi surface maps obtained recently in Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$ (NCCO) via high resolution ARPES measurements, and show that the behavior of this electron-doped compound can be understood as the closing of a Mott (pseudo) gap, leading to a quantum critical point just above optimal doping. The doping dependence of the effective Hubbard $U$ adduced by comparing theoretical and experimental spectra is in resonable accord with various estimates and a simple screening calculation.

How different Fermi surface maps emerge in photoemission from Bi2212

We report angle-resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) from the Fermi energy ($E_F$) over a large area of the ($k_x,k_y$) plane using 21.2 eV and 32 eV photons in two distinct polarizations from an optimally doped single crystal of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212), together with extensive first-principles simulations of the ARPES intensities. The results display a wide-ranging level of accord between theory and experiment and clarify how myriad Fermi surface (FS) maps emerge in ARPES under various experimental conditions. The energy and polarization dependences of the ARPES matrix element help disentangle primary contributions to the spectrum due to the pristine lattice from those arising from modulations of the underlying tetragonal symmetry and provide a route for separating closely placed FS sheets in low dimensional materials.

Phase Separation Models for Cuprate Stripe Arrays

An electronic phase separation model provides a natural explanation for a large variety of experimental results in the cuprates, including evidence for both stripes and larger domains, and a termination of the phase separation in the slightly overdoped regime, when the average hole density equals that on the charged stripes. Several models are presented for charged stripes, showing how density waves, superconductivity, and strong correlations compete with quantum size effects (QSEs) in narrow stripes. The energy bands associated with the charged stripes develop in the middle of the Mott gap, and the splitting of these bands can be understood by considering the QSE on a single ladder.

Flux Phase as a Dynamic Jahn-Teller Phase: Berryonic Matter in the Cuprates?

There is considerable evidence for some form of charge ordering on the hole-doped stripes in the cuprates, mainly associated with the low-temperature tetragonal phase, but with some evidence for either charge density waves or a flux phase, which is a form of dynamic charge-density wave. These three states form a pseudospin triplet, demonstrating a close connection with the E X e dynamic Jahn-Teller effect, suggesting that the cuprates constitute a form of Berryonic matter. This in turn suggests a new model for the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect as a form of flux phase. A simple model of the Cu-O bond stretching phonons allows an estimate of electron-phonon coupling for these modes, explaining why the half breathing mode softens so much more than the full oxygen breathing mode. The anomalous properties of $O^{2-}$ provide a coupling (correlated hopping) which acts to stabilize density wave phases.

Two Pseudogaps in the Cuprates

Meingast, et al. suggest that in YBCO the pseudogap is associated with preformed pairs. It is shown that in underdoped cuprates there is evidence for two pseudogaps, and superconducting fluctions terminate at the smaller pseudogap.

Chaos in a Jahn-Teller Molecule

The Jahn-Teller system E x b_1 + b_2 has a particular degeneracy, where the vibronic potential has an elliptical minimum. In the general case where the ellipse does not reduce to a circle, the classical motion in the potential is chaotic, tending to trapping near one of the extrema of the ellipse. In the quantum problem, the motion consists of correlated tunneling from one extremum to the opposite, leading to an average angular momentum reminiscent of that of the better known E x e dynamic Jahn-Teller system.

Berryonic Matter in the Cuprates

A novel form of Jahn-Teller (JT) effect in the cuprates can be reinterpreted as a conventional JT effect on a lattice with a larger unit cell. There is a triplet of instabilities, parametrized by a pseudospin, consisting of a form of the low-temperature tetragonal phase, a charge density wave phase, and a flux phase (orbital antiferromagnet). On a single 4-Cu plaquette, the problem is of E x (b_1+b_2) form. For a special choice of parameters, the model supports a dynamic JT effect, but is classically chaotic. The connection of this phase with Berryonic matter is discussed.

Photoemission from Ordered Stripe Phases

A phase separation model for stripes has found good agreement with photoemission experiments and with other studies which suggest a termination of the striped phase in the slightly overdoped regime. Here the model is extended in a number of respects. In particular, a discussion of the nature of the charged stripes is presented, suggesting how density waves, superconductivity, and strong correlations can compete with the quantum size effects inherent in narrow stripes. The anomalous doping dependence of the chemical potential is explained.

White-Scalapino-like Stripes in a Mean-Field Hubbard Model

A mean field calculation of the Hubbard model finds a rich phase diagram. The antiferromagnetic phase is generally unstable away from half filling, and there are several regions of phase separation. One solution in particular closely resembles the stripe phase of White and Scalapino. By comparison to unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations (for which this phase is metastable), it is demonstrated that this phase arises from phase separation. The interface surface tension is found to change sign below a particular stripe width, at which point the stripes begin to meander, gradually crossing over to diagonal.

Anomalous scattering rate and microwave absorption in $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}$ and $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ}$

We determine the scattering rate from microwave measurements for an optimally doped Bi-2212 single crystal, using a simple two fluid model with a d-wave symmetry order parameter. In the superconducting state, the calculated scattering rate is three orders of magnitude smaller than that determined from ARPES experiments. A similar anomalously large decrease in the scattering rate is also required to explain the data within a gap-quasiparticle scenario for other HTS, such as $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ}$. The results suggest that the assumption of normal excitations vanishing at low $T$ is invalid and an additional charge mode is responsible for the microwave absorption.

Cluster Spin Glass Distribution Functions in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$

Signatures of the cluster spin glass have been found in a variety of experiments, with an effective onset temperature $T_{on}$ that is frequency dependent. We reanalyze the experimental results and find that they are characterized by a distribution of activation energies, with a nonzero glass transition temperature $T_g(x)<T_{on}$. While the distribution of activation energies is the same, the distribution of weights depends on the process. Remarkably, the weights are essentially doping independent.

A Fermi Surface study of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$BiO$_{3}$

We present all electron computations of the 3D Fermi surfaces (FS's) in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$BiO$_{3}$ for a number of different compositions based on the selfconsistent Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker coherent-potential-approximation (KKR-CPA) approach for incorporating the effects of Ba/K substitution. By assuming a simple cubic structure throughout the composition range, the evolution of the nesting and other features of the FS of the underlying pristine phase is correlated with the onset of various structural transitions with K doping. A parameterized scheme for obtaining an accurate 3D map of the FS in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$BiO$_{3}$ for an arbitrary doping level is developed. We remark on the puzzling differences between the phase diagrams of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$BiO$_{3}$ and BaPb$_{x}$Bi$_{1-x}$O$_{3}$ by comparing aspects of their electronic structures and those of the end compounds BaBiO$_{3}$, KBiO$_3$ and BaPbO$_3$. Our theoretically predicted FS's in the cubic phase are relevant for analyzing high-resolution Compton scattering and positron-annihilation experiments sensitive to the electron momentum density, and are thus amenable to substantial experimental verification.

Dispersion of Ordered Stripe Phases in the Cuprates

A phase separation model is presented for the stripe phase of the cuprates, which allows the doping dependence of the photoemission spectra to be calculated. The idealized limit of a well-ordered array of magnetic and charged stripes is analyzed, including effects of long-range Coulomb repulsion. Remarkably, down to the limit of two-cell wide stripes, the dispersion can be interpreted as essentially a superposition of the two end-phase dispersions, with superposed minigaps associated with the lattice periodicity. The largest minigap falls near the Fermi level; it can be enhanced by proximity to a (bulk) Van Hove singularity. The calculated spectra are dominated by two features -- this charge stripe minigap plus the magnetic stripe Hubbard gap. There is a strong correlation between these two features and the experimental photoemission results of a two-peak dispersion in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, and the peak-dip-hump spectra in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$. The differences are suggestive of the role of increasing stripe fluctuations. The 1/8 anomaly is associated with a quantum critical point, here expressed as a percolation-like crossover. A model is proposed for the limiting minority magnetic phase as an isolated two-leg ladder.

SO(6)-Generalized Pseudogap Model of the Cuprates

The smooth evolution of the tunneling gap of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 with doping from a pseudogap state in the underdoped cuprates to a superconducting state at optimal and overdoping reflects an underlying SO(6) instability structure of the (pi,0) saddle points. The pseudogap is probably not associated with superconductivity, but is related to competing nesting instabilities, which are responsible for the stripe phases. We earlier introduced a simple Ansatz of this competition in terms of a pinned Balseiro-Falicov (pBF) model of competing charge density wave and (s-wave) superconductivity. This model gives a good description of the phase diagram and the tunneling and photoemission spectra. Here, we briefly review these results, and discuss some recent developments: experimental evidence for a non-superconducting component to the pseudogap; and SO(6) generalizations of the pBF model, including flux phase and d-wave superconductivity.

Stripe Disordering Transition

We have recently begun Monte Carlo simulations of the dynamics of stripe phases in the cuprates. A simple model of spinodal decomposition of the holes allows us to incorporate Coulomb repulsion and coherency strains. We find evidence for a possible stripe disordering transition, at a temperature below the pseudogap onset. Experimental searches for such a transition can provide constraints for models of stripe formation.

Remnant Fermi Surfaces in Photoemission

Recent experiments have introduced a new concept for analyzing the photoemission spectra of correlated electrons -- the remnant Fermi surface (rFs), which can be measured even in systems which lack a conventional Fermi surface. Here, we analyze the rFs in a number of interacting electron models, and find that the results fall into two classes. For systems with pairing instabilities, the rFs is an accurate replica of the true Fermi surface. In the presence of nesting instabilities, the rFs is a map of the resulting superlattice Brillouin zone. The results suggest that the gap in Ca_2CuO_2Cl_2 is of nesting origin.

Higher Symmetries in Condensed Matter Physics

We discuss some applications of higher symmetry groups to condensed matter systems. We give special attention to the groups SO(n) (n = 4, 5, 6, 8) in the two-dimensional Hubbard model and its generalizations, which model the high T_c cuprate superconductors.
