What statistics can tell us about strategy in tennis

In this paper we analyse tiebreak results from some tennis players in order to investigate whether we are able to identify some strategy in this crucial moment of the game. We compared the observed results with a binomial distribution considering that the probabilities of winning or losing a point are equal. Using a $χ^2$ test we found that, excepting some players, the greatest part of the results agrees with our hypothesis that there is no hidden strategy and the points in tiebreaks are merely aleatory.

Constraints on two-neutron separation energy in the Borromean $^{22}$C nucleus

The recently extracted matter radius of carbon isotope $^{22}$C allows us to estimate the mean-square distance of a halo neutron with respect to the center-of-mass of this nucleus. By considering this information, we suggest an energy region for an experimental investigation of the unbound $^{21}$C virtual state. Our analysis, in a renormalized zero-ranged three-body model, also indicates that the two-neutron separation energy in $^{22}$C is expected to be found below $\sim$0.4~MeV, where the $^{22}$C is approximated by a Borromean configuration with a pointlike $^{20}$C and two $s$-wave halo neutrons. A virtual-state energy of $^{21}$C close to zero, would make the $^{22}$C, within Borromean nuclei configurations, the most promising candidate to present an excited bound Efimov state or a continuum three-body resonance.

The $ωDD$ vertex in a Sum Rule approach

The study of charmonium dissociation in heavy ion collisions is generally performed in the framework of effective Lagrangians with meson exchange. Some studies are also developed with the intention of calculate form factors and coupling constants related with charmed and light mesons. These quantities are important in the evaluation of charmonium cross sections. In this paper we present a calculation of the $ωDD$ vertex that is a possible interaction vertex in some meson-exchange models spread in the literature. We used the standard method of QCD Sum Rules in order to obtain the vertex form factor as a function of the transferred momentum. Our results are compatible with the value of this vertex form factor (at zero momentum transfer) obtained in the vector-meson dominance model.

Studying nonlinear effects on the early stage of phase ordering using a decomposition method

Nonlinear effects on the early stage of phase ordering are studied using Adomian's decomposition method for the Ginzburg-Landau equation for a nonconserved order parameter. While the long-time regime and the linear behavior at short times of the theory are well understood, the onset of nonlinearities at short times and the breaking of the linear theory at different length scales are less understood. In the Adomian's decomposition method, the solution is systematically calculated in the form of a polynomial expansion for the order parameter, with a time dependence given as a series expansion. The method is very accurate for short times, which allows to incorporate the short-time dynamics of the nonlinear terms in a analytical and controllable way.

Radii of weakly bound three-body systems: halo nuclei and molecules

A renormalized three-body model with zero-range potential is used to estimate the mean-square radii of three-body halo nuclei and molecular systems. The halo nuclei ($^6$He, $^{11}$Li, $^{14}$Be and $^{20}$C) are described as point-like inert cores and two neutrons. The molecular systems, with two helium atoms, are of the type $^4$He$_2-$X, where X$=^4$He, $^6$Li, $^7$Li, or $^{23}$Na. The estimations are compared with experimental data and realistic results.

Scaling predictions for radii of weakly bound triatomic molecules

The mean-square radii of the molecules $^4$He$_3$, $^4$He$_2-^6$Li, $^4$He$_2-^7$Li and $^4$He$_2-^{23}$Na are calculated using a three-body model with contact interactions. They are obtained from a universal scaling function calculated within a renormalized scheme for three particles interacting through pairwise Dirac-delta interaction. The root-mean-square distance between two atoms of mass $m_A$ in a triatomic molecule are estimated to be of de order of ${\cal C}\sqrt{\hbar^2/[m_A(E_3-E_2)]}$, where $E_2$ is the dimer and $E_3$ the trimer binding energies, and ${\cal C}$ is a constant (varying from $\sim 0.6$ to $\sim 1$) that depends on the ratio between $E_2$ and $E_3$. Considering previous estimates for the trimer energies, we also predict the sizes of Rubidium and Sodium trimers in atomic traps.

Charmonium - Pion Cross Section from QCD Sum Rules

The $J/ψπ\to \bar{D} D^*, \bar{D} D$, ${\bar D}^* D^*$ and ${\bar D} D^*$ cross sections as a function of $\sqrt{s}$ are evaluated in a QCD sum rule calculation. We study the Borel sum rule for the four point function involving pseudoscalar and vector meson currents, up to dimension four in the operator product expansion. We find that our results are smaller than the $J/ψπ\to {charmed mesons}$ cross sections obtained with models based on meson exchange, but are close to those obtained with quark exchange models.

Form Factors and Decay Rates for Heavy $Λ$ Semileptonic Decays from QCD Sum Rules

QCD sum rules for the determination of form factors of $Λ_b$ and $Λ_c$ semileptonic decays are investigated. With a form for the baryonic current appropriate for the limits of the heavy quark symmetries, the different tensor structures occurring in the two- and three-point functions are separately studied, and in each case general relations are written for the form factors. Particular attention is given to the treatment of the kinematical region ascribed to the continuum. The $t$-dependence of the form factors and the decay rates are numerically evaluated and compared to experimental information.

Optimized delta expansion for relativistic nuclear models

The optimized $δ$-expansion is a nonperturbative approach for field theoretic models which combines the techniques of perturbation theory and the variational principle. This technique is discussed in the $λϕ^4$ model and then implemented in the Walecka model for the equation of state of nuclear matter. The results obtained with the $δ$ expansion are compared with those obtained with the traditional mean field, relativistic Hartree and Hartree-Fock approximations.
