Multiple first-order metamagnetic transitions and quantum oscillations in ultrapure

We present measurements on ultra clean single crystals of the bilayered ruthenate metal Sr3Ru2O7, which has a magnetic-field-tuned quantum critical point. Quantum oscillations of differing frequencies can be seen in the resistivity both below and above its metamagnetic transition. This frequency shift corresponds to a small change in the Fermi surface volume that is qualitatively consistent with the small moment change in the magnetisation across the metamagnetic transition. Very near the metamagnetic field, unusual behaviour is seen. There is a strong enhancement of the resistivity in a narrow field window, with a minimum in the resistivity as a function of temperature below 1 K that becomes more pronounced as the disorder level decreases. The region of anomalous behaviour is bounded at low temperatures by two first-order phase transitions. The implications of the results are discussed. PACS: 68.35.Rh, 71.27.+a, 72.15.-v, 74.70.Pq

Angular dependence of the magnetic susceptibility in the itinerant metamagnet Sr3Ru2O7

We report the results of a study of the di erential magnetic susceptibility of Sr3Ru2O7 as a function of temperature and magnetic elds applied at a series of angles to the ab plane. By analysing the real and imaginary parts of the susceptibility, we conclude that the eld angle acts as a continuous tuning parameter for the critical end-point to a line of rst order metamagnetic phase transitions. The end-point sits at approximately 1.25K for elds applied in the ab plane, and is depressed to below 50 mK when the eld is aligned within 10 of the c axis.

Critical end-point and metamagnetic quantum criticality in Sr3Ru2O7

We report a metamagnetic critical point at (B*,T*)=(5.1T,1.1K) for magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the (tetragonal) c-axis of Sr3Ru2O7. First-order behaviour well below T* indicates that (B*,T*) marks a critical end-point that terminates a line of first-order metamagnetic transitions. The absence of first-order behaviour in the metamagnetic transition with B||c confirms that the non-Fermi liquid behaviour for B||c is underpinned by a metamagnetic quantum critical end-point for which T*->0. Scaling behaviour of the resistivity under hydrostatic pressure yields the surprising result that although B* increases rapidly with pressure, T* has only a weak pressure dependence.

Observation of Two-dimensional Spin Fluctuations in the Bilayer Ruthenate Sr3Ru2O7 by Inelastic Neutron Scattering

We report the first observation of two-dimensional incommensurate magnetic fluctuations in the layered metallic perovskite Sr3Ru2O7. The wavevectors where the magnetic fluctuations are strongest are different from those observed in the superconducting single layer ruthenate Sr2RuO4 and appear to be determined by Fermi surface nesting. No antiferromagnetic ordering is observed for temperatures down to 1.5K. For temperatures T<20K, the fluctuations become predominately ferromagnetic. Our inelastic neutron scattering measurements provide concrete evidence of the coexistence of competing interactions in Sr3Ru2O7 and of the low energy scale of the fluctuations.

Metamagnetism and critical fluctuations in high quality single crystals of the bilayer ruthenate Sr3Ru2O7

We report the results of low temperature transport, specific heat and magnetisation measurements on high quality single crystals of the bilayer perovskite Sr3Ru2O7, which is a close relative of the unconventional superconductor Sr2RuO4. Metamagnetism is observed, and transport and thermodynamic evidence for associated critical fluctuations is presented. These relatively unusual fluctuations might be pictured as variations in the Fermi surface topography itself. No equivalent behaviour has been observed in the metallic state of Sr2RuO4.

Vortex lattice structures and pairing symmetry in Sr2RuO4

Recent experimental results indicate that superconductivity in Sr2RuO4 is described by the p-wave E_u representation of the D_{4h} point group. Results on the vortex lattice structures for this representation are presented. The theoretical results are compared with experiment.
