Realization of a Townes soliton in a two-component planar Bose gas

Most experimental observations of solitons are limited to one-dimensional (1D) situations, where they are naturally stable. For instance, in 1D cold Bose gases, they exist for any attractive interaction strength $g$ and particle number $N$. By contrast, in two dimensions, solitons appear only for discrete values of $gN$, the so-called Townes soliton being the most celebrated example. Here, we use a two-component Bose gas to prepare deterministically such a soliton: Starting from a uniform bath of atoms in a given internal state, we imprint the soliton wave function using an optical transfer to another state. We explore various interaction strengths, atom numbers and sizes, and confirm the existence of a solitonic behaviour for a specific value of $gN$ and arbitrary sizes, a hallmark of scale invariance.

Optical control of the density and spin spatial profiles of a planar Bose gas

We demonstrate the arbitrary control of the density profile of a two-dimensional Bose gas by shaping the optical potential applied to the atoms. We use a digital micromirror device (DMD) directly imaged onto the atomic cloud through a high resolution imaging system. Our approach relies on averaging the response of many pixels of the DMD over the diffraction spot of the imaging system, which allows us to create an optical potential with arbitrary grey levels and with micron-scale resolution. The obtained density distribution is optimized with a feedback loop based on the measured absorption images of the cloud. Using the same device, we also engineer arbitrary spin distributions thanks to a two-photon Raman transfer between internal ground states.

Resonant-light diffusion in a disordered atomic layer

Light scattering in dense media is a fundamental problem of many-body physics, which is also relevant for the development of optical devices. In this work we investigate experimentally light propagation in a dense sample of randomly positioned resonant scatterers confined in a layer of sub-wavelength thickness. We locally illuminate the atomic cloud and monitor spatially-resolved fluorescence away from the excitation region. We show that light spreading is well described by a diffusion process, involving many scattering events in the dense regime. For light detuned from resonance we find evidence that the atomic layer behaves as a graded-index planar waveguide. These features are reproduced by a simple geometrical model and numerical simulations of coupled dipoles.

Sound propagation in a uniform superfluid two-dimensional Bose gas

In superfluid systems several sound modes can be excited, as for example first and second sound in liquid helium. Here, we excite propagating and standing waves in a uniform two-dimensional Bose gas and we characterize the propagation of sound in both the superfluid and normal regime. In the superfluid phase, the measured speed of sound is well described by a two-fluid hydrodynamic model, and the weak damping rate is well explained by the scattering with thermal excitations. In the normal phase the sound becomes strongly damped due to a departure from hydrodynamic behavior.

Relaxation dynamics in the merging of $N$ independent condensates

Controlled quantum systems such as ultracold atoms can provide powerful platforms to study non-equilibrium dynamics of closed many-body quantum systems, especially since a complete theoretical description is generally challenging. In this Letter, we present a detailed study of the rich out-of-equilibrium dynamics of an adjustable number $N$ of uncorrelated condensates after connecting them in a ring-shaped optical trap. We observe the formation of long-lived supercurrents and confirm the scaling of their winding number with $N$ in agreement with the geodesic rule. Moreover, we provide insight into the microscopic mechanism that underlies the smoothening of the phase profile.

Loading and compression of a single two-dimensional Bose gas in an optical accordion

The experimental realization of 2D Bose gases with a tunable interaction strength is an important challenge for the study of ultracold quantum matter. Here we report on the realization of an optical accordion creating a lattice potential with a spacing that can be dynamically tuned between 11$\,μ$m and 2$\,μ$m. We show that we can load ultracold $^{87}$Rb atoms into a single node of this optical lattice in the large spacing configuration and then decrease nearly adiabatically the spacing to reach a strong harmonic confinement with frequencies larger than $ω_z/2π=10\,$kHz. Atoms are trapped in an additional flat-bottom in-plane potential that is shaped with a high resolution. By combining these tools we create custom-shaped uniform 2D Bose gases with tunable confinement along the transverse direction and hence with a tunable interaction strength.
