Beam Charge Asymmetries for Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering on the Proton at CLAS12

The parameterization of the nucleon structure through Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) shed a new light on the nucleon internal dynamics. For its direct interpretation, Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) is the golden channel for GPDs investigation. The DVCS process interferes with the Bethe-Heitler (BH) mechanism to constitute the leading order amplitude of the $eN \to eNγ$ process. The study of the $epγ$ reaction with polarized positron and electron beams gives a complete set of unique observables to unravel the different contributions to the $ep γ$ cross section. This separates the different reaction amplitudes, providing a direct access to their real and imaginary parts which procures crucial constraints on the model dependences and associated systematic uncertainties on GPDs extraction. The real part of the BH-DVCS interference amplitude is particularly sensitive to the $D$-term which parameterizes the Gravitational Form Factors of the nucleon. The separation of the imaginary parts of the interference and DVCS amplitudes provides insights on possible higher-twist effects. We propose to measure the unpolarized and polarized Beam Charge Asymmetries (BCAs) of the $\vec{e}^{\pm}p \to e^{\pm}p γ$ process on an unpolarized hydrogen target with {\tt CLAS12}, using polarized positron and electron beams at 10.6 GeV. The azimuthal and $t$-dependences of the unpolarized and polarized BCAs will be measured over a large $(x_B,Q^2)$ phase space using a 100 day run with a luminosity of 0.66$\times 10^{35}$cm$^{-2}\cdot$s$^{-1}$.

Global well-posedness for the higher order non-linear Schr\"odinger equation on modulations spaces

We consider the initial value problem (IVP) associated to a higher order nonlinear Schr\"odinger (h-NLS) equation $ \partial_{t}u+ia \partial^{2}_{x}u+ b\partial^{3}_{x}u+ic_1|u|^{2}u+c_2 |u|^{2}\partial_{x}u=0, \quad x,t \in \mathbb{R}, $ for given data in the modulation space $M_s^{2,p}(\mathbb{R})$. Using ideias of Killip, Visan, Zhang, Oh, Wang, we prove that the IVP associated to the h-NLS equation is globally well-posed in the modulation spaces $M^{s,p}$ for $s\geq\frac14$ and $p\geq2$.

Variability of the Sun's luminosity places constraints on the thermal equilibrium of the convection zone

Luminosity, which is the total amount of radiant energy emitted by an object, is one of the most critical quantities in astrophysics for characterizing stars. Equally important is the temporal evolution of a star's luminosity because of its intimate connection with the stellar energy budget, large-scale convective motion, and heat storage in the stellar interior. Here, we model the solar luminosity by extending a semi-empirical total solar irradiance (TSI) model that uses solar-surface magnetism to reconstruct solar irradiance over the entire 4π solid angle around the Sun. This model was constrained by comparing its output to the irradiance in the Earth's direction with the measured TSI. Comparing the solar luminosity to the TSI on timescales from days to for cycles 23 and 24, we find poor agreement on short timescales (< solar rotation). On longer timescales, however, we find good agreement between the luminosity model and the TSI, which suggests that the extrapolation of luminosities to multi-cycle timescales based on TSI reconstructions may be possible. We show that the solar luminosity is not constant but varies in phase with the solar cycle. This variation has an amplitude of 0.14% from minimum to maximum for solar cycle 23. Considering the energetics in the solar convection zone, it is therefore obvious that a steady-state input from the radiative zone at the solar minimum level would lead to a gradual reduction in the energy content in the convection zone over multi-century timescales. We show that the luminosity at the base of the convection zone should be approximately 0.032% higher than that at the solar surface during solar minimum to maintain net energy equilibrium through the solar cycle. These different energy-input scenarios place constraints on the long-term evolution of the total solar irradiance and its impact on the solar forcing of climate variability.

Beam charge asymmetries for deeply virtual Compton scattering off the proton

The unpolarized and polarized Beam Char\-ge Asymmetries (BCAs) of the $\vv{e}^{\pm}p \to e^{\pm}p γ$ process off unpolarized hydrogen are discussed. The measurement of BCAs with the CLAS12 spectrometer at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, using polarized positron and electron beams at 10.6 GeV is investigated. This experimental configuration allows to measure azimuthal and $t$-dependences of the unpolarized and polarized BCAs over a large $(x_B,Q^2)$ phase space, providing a direct access to the real part of the Compton Form Factor (CFF) ${\mathcal H}$. Additionally, these measurements confront the Bethe-Heitler dominance hypothesis and eventual effects beyond leading twist. The impact of potential positron beam data on the determination of CFFs is also investigated within a local fitting approach of experimental observables. Positron data are shown to strongly reduce correlations between CFFs and consequently improve significantly the determination of $\Re {\rm e} [\mathcal{H}]$.

Electroweak Corrections to Dark Matter Direct Detection in a Vector Dark Matter Model

Although many astrophysical and cosmological observations point towards the existence of Dark Matter (DM), the nature of the DM particle has not been clarified to date. In this paper, we investigate a minimal model with a vector DM (VDM) candidate. Within this model, we compute the cross section for the scattering of the VDM particle with a nucleon. We provide the next-to-leading order (NLO) cross section for the direct detection of the DM particle. Subsequently, we study the phenomenological implications of the NLO corrections, in particular with respect to the sensitivity of the direct detection DM experiments. We further investigate more theoretical questions such as the gauge dependence of the results and the remaining theoretical uncertainties due to the applied approximations.

The CLIC Potential for New Physics

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a mature option for the future of high energy physics. It combines the benefits of the clean environment of $e^+e^-$ colliders with operation at high centre-of-mass energies, allowing to probe scales beyond the reach of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for many scenarios of new physics. This places the CLIC project at a privileged spot in between the precision and energy frontiers, with capabilities that will significantly extend knowledge on both fronts at the end of the LHC era. In this report we review and revisit the potential of CLIC to search, directly and indirectly, for physics beyond the Standard Model.

Probing the CP nature of the Higgs coupling in $t\bar{t}h$ events at the LHC

The determination of the CP nature of the top quark Yukawa coupling is addressed in this phenomenological work, using $t\bar{t}h$ events at the $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV LHC, with $h\rightarrow b\bar b$ and through the dilepton decay channel of $t\bar{t}$. Signal events were generated for pure $CP$-even, pure $CP$-odd and mixed-$CP$ coupling scenarios. Standard Model (SM) backgrounds were also considered. Angular distributions and asymmetries were studied and found to be potentially good probes to the $CP$ nature of the coupling, even after detector simulation and full event reconstruction using a kinematic fit. Expected limits to the $t\bar th$ production cross-section times branching ratio were obtained for a range of top quark Yukawa $CP$-mixing angles and for different integrated luminosities of the LHC.

Phenomenological Comparison of Models with Extended Higgs Sectors

Beyond the Standard Model (SM) extensions usually include extended Higgs sectors. Models with singlet or doublet fields are the simplest ones that are compatible with the $ρ$ parameter constraint. The discovery of new non-SM Higgs bosons and the identification of the underlying model requires dedicated Higgs properties analyses. In this paper, we compare several Higgs sectors featuring 3 CP-even neutral Higgs bosons that are also motivated by their simplicity and their capability to solve some of the flaws of the SM. They are: the SM extended by a complex singlet field (CxSM), the singlet extension of the 2-Higgs-Doublet Model (N2HDM), and the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric SM extension (NMSSM). In addition, we analyse the CP-violating 2-Higgs-Doublet Model (C2HDM), which provides 3 neutral Higgs bosons with a pseudoscalar admixture. This allows us to compare the effects of singlet and pseudoscalar admixtures. Through dedicated scans of the allowed parameter space of the models, we analyse the phenomenologically viable scenarios from the view point of the SM-like Higgs boson and of the signal rates of the non-SM-like Higgs bosons to be found. In particular, we analyse the effect of singlet/pseudoscalar admixture, and the potential to differentiate these models in the near future. This is supported by a study of couplings sums of the Higgs bosons to massive gauge bosons and to fermions, where we identify features that allow us to distinguish the models, in particular when only part of the Higgs spectrum is discovered. Our results can be taken as guidelines for future LHC data analyses, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, to identify specific benchmark points aimed at revealing the underlying model.

Prospects for charged Higgs searches at the LHC

The goal of this report is to summarize the current situation and discuss possible search strategies for charged scalars, in non-supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model at the LHC. Such scalars appear in Multi-Higgs-Doublet models (MHDM), in particular in the popular Two-Higgs-Doublet model (2HDM), allowing for charged and additional neutral Higgs bosons. These models have the attractive property that electroweak precision observables are automatically in agreement with the Standard Model at the tree level. For the most popular version of this framework, Model~II, a discovery of a charged Higgs boson remains challenging, since the parameter space is becoming very constrained, and the QCD background is very high. We also briefly comment on models with dark matter which constrain the corresponding charged scalars that occur in these models. The stakes of a possible discovery of an extended scalar sector are very high, and these searches should be pursued in all conceivable channels, at the LHC and at future colliders.

Probing the CP nature of the Higgs coupling in $t{\bar t}h$ events at the LHC

The determination of the CP nature of the Higgs coupling to top quarks is addressed in this paper, using $t{\bar t} h$ events produced in $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC. Dileptonic final states are employed, with two oppositely charged leptons and four jets, corresponding to the decays $t\rightarrow bW^+ \rightarrow b \ell^+ν_\ell$, $\bar{t}\rightarrow \bar{b}W^- \rightarrow \bar{b} \ell^-\barν_\ell$ and $h\rightarrow b\bar{b}$. Pure scalar ($h=H$), pure pseudo-scalar ($h=A$) and CP-violating Higgs boson signal events, generated with MadGraph5_aMC@NLO, are fully reconstructed through a kinematic fit. We furthermore generate samples that have both a CP-even and a CP-odd component in the $t \bar t h$ coupling in order to probe the ratio of the two components. New angular distributions of the decay products, as well as CP angular asymmetries, are explored in order to separate the scalar from the pseudo-scalar components of the Higgs boson and reduce the contribution from the dominant irreducible background, $t{\bar t}b{\bar b}$. Significant differences between the angular distributions and asymmetries are observed, even after the full kinematic fit reconstruction of the events, allowing to define the best observables for a global fit of the Higgs couplings parameters.

Angular distributions in $t{\bar t}H (H\rightarrow b\bar{b})$ reconstructed events at the LHC

The associated production of a Higgs boson and a top-quark pair, $t{\bar t} H$, in proton-proton collisions is addressed in this paper for a center of mass energy of 13TeV at the LHC. Dileptonic final states of $t{\bar t}H$ events with two oppositely charged leptons and four jets from the decays $t\rightarrow bW^+ \rightarrow b \ell^+ν_\ell$, $\bar{t}\rightarrow \bar{b}W^- \rightarrow \bar{b} \ell^-\barν_\ell$ and $h\rightarrow b\bar{b}$, are used. Signal events, generated with MadGraph5_aMC@NLO, are fully reconstructed by applying a kinematic fit. New angular distributions of the decay products as well as angular asymmetries are explored in order to improve discrimination of $t{\bar t} H$ signal events over the dominant irreducible background contribution, $t{\bar t}b{\bar b}$. Even after the full kinematic fit reconstruction of the events, the proposed angular distributions and asymmetries are still quite different in the $t\bar{t}H$ signal and the dominant background ($t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$).

Are There Hidden Scalars in LHC Higgs Results?

The Higgs boson recently discovered at the Large Hadron Collider has shown to have couplings to the remaining particles well within what is predicted by the Standard Model. The search for other new heavy scalar states has so far revealed to be fruitless, imposing constraints on the existence of new scalar particles. However, it is still possible that any existing heavy scalars would preferentially decay to final states involving the light Higgs boson thus evading the current LHC bounds on heavy scalar states. Moreover, decays of the heavy scalars could increase the number of light Higgs bosons being produced. Since the number of light Higgs bosons decaying to Standard Model particles is within the predicted range, this could mean that part of the light Higgs bosons could have their origin in heavy scalar decays. This situation would occur if the light Higgs couplings to Standard Model particles were reduced by a concomitant amount. Using a very simple extension of the SM - the two-Higgs double model - we show that in fact we could already be observing the effect of the heavy scalar states even if all results related to the Higgs are in excellent agreement with the Standard Model predictions.

Avoiding Death by Vacuum

The two-Higgs doublet model (2HDM) can have two electroweak breaking, CP-conserving, minima. The possibility arises that the minimum which corresponds to the known elementary particle spectrum is metastable, a possibility we call the "panic vacuum". We present analytical bounds on the parameters of the softly broken Peccei-Quinn 2HDM which are necessary and sufficient conditions to avoid this possibility. We also show that, for this particular model, the current LHC data already tell us that we are necessarily in the global minimum of the theory, regardless of any cosmological considerations about the lifetime of the false vacua.

Impact of FCNC top quark interactions on BR(t -> b W)

We study the effect that FCNC interactions of the top quark will have on the branching ratio of charged decays of the top quark. We have performed an integrated analysis using Tevatron and B-factories data and with just the further assumption that the CKM matrix is unitary we can obtain very restrictive bounds on the strong and electroweak FCNC branching ratios Br(t -> q X) < 4.0 10^{-4}, where X is any vector boson and a sum in q = u,c is implied.

Dimension six FCNC operators and top production at the LHC

In this work we calculate the effects of the electroweak flavour changing neutral currents dimension six effective operators on single top production at the LHC. These results are then combined with previous ones we have obtained for the strong sector. This allow us, for the first time, to perform a combined analysis of flavour changing neutral currents in top production with all contributing dimension six operators. Finally, we study the feasibility of their observation and characterization both at the Tevatron and at the LHC.

Search for a light fermiophobic Higgs boson produced via gluon fusion at Hadron Colliders

In this study, we propose new Higgs production mechanisms with multi-photon final states in the fermiophobic limit of the Two Higgs Doublet Model. The processes are: gg -> hh, gg -> H h followed by H -> h h and gg -> A h followed by A -> h Z. In the fermiophobic limit, gg -> h h and gg -> A h -> h h Z would give rise to 4 photon signature while gg -> H h -> h h h can give a 6 photon final state. We show that both the Fermilab Tevatron and CERN's Large Hadron Collider can probe a substantial slice of the parameter space in this fermiophobic scenario of the Two Higgs Doublet Model. If observed the above processes can give some information on the triple Higgs couplings involved.

2DPHOT: A Multi-purpose Environment for the Two-dimensional Analysis of Wide-field Images

We describe 2DPHOT, a general purpose analysis environment for source detection and analysis in deep wide-field images. 2DPHOT is an automated tool to obtain both integrated and surface photometry of galaxies in an image, to perform reliable star-galaxy separation with accurate estimates of contamination at faint flux levels, and to estimate completeness of the image catalog. We describe the analysis strategy on which 2DPHOT is based, and provide a detailed description of the different algorithms implemented in the package. This new environment is intended as a dedicated tool to process the wealth of data from wide-field imaging surveys. To this end, the package is complemented by 2DGUI, an environment that allows multiple processing of data using a range of computing architectures.
