Unusual resistance-voltage dependence of nanojunctions during electromigration in ultra-high vacuum

The electrical resistance R of metallic nanocontacts subjected to controlled cyclic electromigration in ultra-high vacuum has been investigated in-situ as a function of applied voltage V. For sufficiently small contacts, i.e., large resistance, a decrease of R(V) while increasing V is observed. This effect is tentatively attributed to the presence of contacts separated by thin vacuum barriers in parallel to ohmic nanocontacts. Simple model calculations indicate that both thermal activation or tunneling can lead to this unusual behavior. We describe our data by a tunneling model whose key parameter, i.e., the tunneling distance, changes because of thermal expansion due to Joule heating and/or electrostatic strain arising from the applied voltage. Oxygen exposure during electromigration prevents the formation of negative R(V) slopes, and at the same time enhances the probability of uncontrolled melting, while other gases show little effects. In addition, indication for field emission has been observed in some samples

Thermally activated conductance in arrays of small Josephson junctions

We present measurements of the temperature-dependent conductance for series arrays of small-capacitance SQUIDs. At low bias voltages, the arrays exhibit a strong Coulomb blockade, which we study in detail as a function of temperature and Josephson energy $E_J$. We find that the zero-bias conductance is well described by thermally activated charge transport with the activation energy on the order of $ΛE_C$, where $Λ$ is the charge screening length in the array and $E_C$ is the charging energy of a single SQUID.

Chiral skyrmions in thin magnetic films: new objects for magnetic storage technologies?

Axisymmetric magnetic lines of nanometer sizes (chiral vortices or skyrmions) have been predicted to exist in a large group of noncentrosymmetric crystals more than two decades ago. Recently these magnetic textures have been directly observed in nanolayers of cubic helimagnets and monolayers of magnetic metals. We develop a micromagnetic theory of chiral skyrmions in thin magnetic layers for magnetic materials with intrinsic and induced chirality. Such particle-like and stable micromagnetic objects can exist in broad ranges of applied magnetic fields including zero field. Chiral skyrmions can be used as a new type of highly mobile nanoscale data carriers.

Aluminum Hard Mask Technique for the Fabrication of High-Quality Submicron Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb Josephson Junctions

We have developed a combined photolithography and electron-beam lithography fabrication process for sub-\mum to \mum-size Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb Josephson junctions. In order to define the junction size and protect its top electrode during anodic oxidation, we developed and used the new concept of an aluminum hard mask. Josephson junctions of sizes down to 0.5 \mum2 have been fabricated and thoroughly characterized. We found that they have a very high quality, which is witnessed by the IV curves with quality parameters Vm > 50 mV and Vgap = 2.8 mV at 4.2 K, as well as IcRN products of 1.75-1.93 mV obtained at lower temperatures. In order to test the usability of our fabrication process for superconducting quantum bits, we have also designed, fabricated and experimentally investigated phase qubits made of these junctions. We found a relaxation time of T1 = 26 ns and a dephasing time of T2 = 21 ns.

Towards the identification of a quantum critical line in the (p, B) phase diagram of CeCoIn5

The low-temperature thermal expansion of CeCoIn5 single crystals measured parallel and perpendicular to magnetic fields B oriented along the c axis yields the volume thermal-expansion coefficient $β$. Considerable deviations of $β(T)$ from Fermi-liquid behavior occur already within the superconducting region of the (B, T) phase diagram and become maximal at the upper critical field $B^0_{c2}$. However, $β(T)$ and the Grüneisen parameter $Γ$ are incompatible with a quantum critical point (QCP) at $B^0_{c2}$, but allow for a QCP shielded by superconductivity and extending to negative pressures for $B < B^0_{c2}$. Together with literature data we construct a tentative (p, B, T) phase diagram of CeCoIn5 suggesting a quantum critical line in the (p, B) plane.
