Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of magnetic moments and M1 transitions in A<=7 nuclei including meson-exchange currents

Green's function Monte Carlo calculations of magnetic moments and M1 transitions including two-body meson-exchange current (MEC) contributions are reported for A<=7 nuclei. The realistic Argonne v18 two-nucleon and Illinois-2 three-nucleon potentials are used to generate the nuclear wave functions. The two-body meson-exchange operators are constructed to satisfy the continuity equation with the Argonne v18 potential. The MEC contributions increase the A=3,7 isovector magnetic moments by 16% and the A=6,7 M1 transition rates by 17--34%, bringing them into very good agreement with the experimental data.

Electromagnetic Processes in $χ$EFT

Nuclear electromagnetic currents derived in a chiral-effective-field-theory framework including explicit nucleons, $Δ$ isobars, and pions up to N$^2$LO, {\it i.e.} ignoring loop corrections, are used in a study of neutron radiative captures on protons and deuterons at thermal energies, and of $A$=2 and 3 nuclei magnetic moments. With the strengths of the $Δ$-excitation currents determined to reproduce the $n$-$p$ cross section and isovector combination of the trinucleon magnetic moments, we find that the cross section and photon circular polarization parameter, measured respectively in $n$-$d$ and $\vec{n}$-$d$ processes, are significantly underpredicted by theory.

Dependence of two-nucleon momentum densities on total pair momentum

Two-nucleon momentum distributions are calculated for the ground states of 3He and 4He as a function of the nucleons' relative and total momenta. We use variational Monte Carlo wave functions derived from a realistic Hamiltonian with two- and three-nucleon potentials. The momentum distribution of pp pairs is found to be much smaller than that of pn pairs for values of the relative momentum in the range (300--500) MeV/c and vanishing total momentum. However, as the total momentum increases to 400 MeV/c, the ratio of pp to pn pairs in this relative momentum range grows and approaches the limit 1/2 for 3He and 1/4 for 4He, corresponding to the ratio of pp to pn pairs in these nuclei. This behavior should be easily observable in two-nucleon knock-out processes, such as A(e,e'pN).

Neutron spin rotation in \vec{n}-d scattering

The neutron spin rotation induced by parity-violating (PV) components in the nucleon-nucleon potential is studied in \vec{n}-d scattering at zero energy. Results are obtained corresponding to the Argonne v_{18} two-nucleon and Urbana-IX three-nucleon strong-interaction potentials in combination with either the DDH or pionless EFT model for the weak-interaction potential. We find that this observable is dominated by the contribution of the long-range part of the PV potential associated with pion exchange. Thus its measurement could provide a further constraint, complementary to that coming from measurements of the photon asymmetry in \vec{n}-p radiative capture, on the strength of this component of the hadronic weak interaction.

Lightest scalar in the SU_L(2)*SU_R(2) linear σmodel

We consider the lightest scalar meson in the frame of the $SU_L(2)\times SU_R(2)$ linear $σ$ model, keeping in mind that this model could be the low energy realization of the two-flavour QCD. We show that the $σ$ field is described by its four-quark component at least in the $σ$ resonance energy (virtuality) region and the $σ\toγγ$ decay is the four quark transition. We emphasize that residues of the $σ$ pole in the $ππ\toππ$ and $γγ\toππ$ amplitudes do not give an idea about the $σ$ meson nature, and the progress in studying the $σ$ meson production mechanisms in different processes could essentially further us in understanding its nature.

A relativistic calculation of the deuteron threshold electrodisintegration at backward angles

The threshold electrodisintegration of the deuteron at backward angles is studied with a relativistic Hamiltonian, including a relativistic one-pion-exchange potential (OPEP) with off-shell terms as predicted by pseudovector coupling of pions to nucleons. The bound and scattering states are obtained in the center-of-mass frame, and then boosted from it to the Breit frame, where the evaluation of the relevant matrix elements of the electromagnetic current operator is carried out. The latter includes, in addition to one-body, also two-body terms due to pion exchange, as obtained, consistently with the OPEP, in pseudovector pion-nucleon coupling theory. The full Lorentz structure of these currents is retained. In order to estimate the magnitude of the relativistic effects we perform, for comparison, the calculation with a non-relativistic phase-equivalent Hamiltonian and the standard non-relativistic expressions for the one-body and two-body pion-exchange currents. Our results for the electrodisintegration cross section show that, in the calculations using one-body currents, relativistic corrections become significant ({\it i.e.}, larger than 10%) only at high momentum transfer $Q$ ($Q^2 \simeq 40$fm$^{-2}$ and beyond). However, the inclusion of two-body currents makes the relativistic predictions considerably smaller than the corresponding non-relativistic results in the $Q^2$ region (18--40) fm$^{-2}$. The calculations based on the relativistic model also confirm the inadequacy, already established in a non-relativistic context, of the present electromagnetic current model to reproduce accurately the experimental data at intermediate values of momentum transfers.

Tensor Forces and the Ground-State Structure of Nuclei

Two-nucleon momentum distributions are calculated for the ground states of nuclei with mass number $A\leq 8$, using variational Monte Carlo wave functions derived from a realistic Hamiltonian with two- and three-nucleon potentials. The momentum distribution of $np$ pairs is found to be much larger than that of $pp$ pairs for values of the relative momentum in the range (300--600) MeV/c and vanishing total momentum. This order of magnitude difference is seen in all nuclei considered and has a universal character originating from the tensor components present in any realistic nucleon-nucleon potential. The correlations induced by the tensor force strongly influence the structure of $np$ pairs, which are predominantly in deuteron-like states, while they are ineffective for $pp$ pairs, which are mostly in $^1$S$_0$ states. These features should be easily observable in two-nucleon knock-out processes, such as $A(e,e^\prime np)$ and $A(e,e^\prime pp)$.

Two-Body Electrodisintegration of $^3$He at High Momentum Transfer

The $^3$He$(e,e^\prime p)$$d$ reaction is studied using an accurate three-nucleon bound state wave function, a model for the electromagnetic current operator including one- and two-body terms, and the Glauber approximation for the treatment of final state interactions. In contrast to earlier studies, the profile operator in the Glauber expansion is derived from a nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitude, which retains its full spin and isospin dependence and is consistent with phase-shift analyses of two-nucleon scattering data. The amplitude is boosted from the center-of-mass frame, where parameterizations for it are available, to the frame where rescattering occurs. Exact Monte Carlo methods are used to evaluate the relevant matrix elements of the electromagnetic current operator. The predicted cross section is found to be in quantitative agreement with the experimental data for values of the missing momentum $p_{\rm m}$ in the range (0--700) MeV/c, but underestimates the data at $p_{\rm m} \simeq 1$ GeV/c by about a factor of two. However, the longitudinal-transverse asymmetry, measured up to $p_{\rm m} \simeq$ 600 MeV/c, is well reproduced by theory. A critical comparison is carried out between the results obtained in the present work and those of earlier studies.

Induced Polarization in the $^2$H($γ,\vec n$)$^1$H Reaction at Low Energy

The induced polarization, $P^\prime_y$, of the neutron in the deuteron photo-disintegration from threshold up to 30 MeV is calculated using a variety of different, latest-generation potentials--Argonne $v_{18}$, Bonn 2000, and Nijmegen I-- and a realistic model for the nuclear electromagnetic current operator, including one- and two-body terms. The model dependence of the theoretical predictions is found to be very small. These predictions are systematically larger in magnitude than the measured $P^\prime_y$ values, and corroborate the conclusions of an earlier, and much older, study. There is considerable scatter in the available experimental data. New and more accurate measurements of the induced polarization in the $^2$H($γ,\vec n$)$^1$H reaction are needed in order to establish unequivocally whether there is a discrepancy between theory and experiment.

Electromagnetic structure of A=2 and 3 nuclei and the nuclear current operator

Different models for conserved two- and three-body electromagnetic currents are constructed from two- and three-nucleon interactions, using either meson-exchange mechanisms or minimal substitution in the momentum dependence of these interactions. The connection between these two different schemes is elucidated. A number of low-energy electronuclear observables, including (i) $np$ radiative capture at thermal neutron energies and deuteron photodisintegration at low energies, (ii) $nd$ and $pd$ radiative capture reactions, and (iii) isoscalar and isovector magnetic form factors of $^3$H and $^3$He, are calculated in order to make a comparative study of these models for the current operator. The realistic Argonne $v_{18}$ two-nucleon and Urbana IX or Tucson-Melbourne three-nucleon interactions are taken as a case study. For $A$=3 processes, the bound and continuum wave functions, both below and above deuteron breakup threshold, are obtained with the correlated hyperspherical-harmonics method. Three-body currents give small but significant contributions to some of the polarization observables in the $^2$H($p,γ$)$^3$He process and the $^2$H($n,γ$)$^3$H cross section at thermal neutron energies. It is shown that the use of a current which did not exactly satisfy current conservation with the two- and three-nucleon interactions in the Hamiltonian was responsible for some of the discrepancies reported in previous studies between the experimental and theoretical polarization observables in $pd$ radiative capture.

Polarization transfer in $^4$He$(\vec{e},e^\prime\vec{p})$$^3$H: is the ratio $G_{Ep}/G_{Mp}$ modified in medium ?

Polarization observables in the $^4$He$(\vec{e},e^\prime\vec{p})$$^3$H reaction are calculated using accurate three- and four-nucleon bound-state wave functions, a realistic model for the nuclear electromagnetic current operator, and a treatment of final-state-interactions with an optical potential. In contrast to earlier studies, no significant discrepancies are found between theory and experiment both for the ratio of transverse to longitudinal polarization transfers and for the induced polarization, when free-nucleon electromagnetic form factors are used in the current operator. The present results challenge the current interpretation of the experimental data in terms of medium-modified form factors.

Electrodisintegration of $^3$He below and above deuteron breakup threshold

Recent advances in the study of electrodisintegration of 3He are presented and discussed. The pair-correlated hyperspherical harmonics method is used to calculate the initial and final state wave functions, with a realistic Hamiltonian consisting of the Argonne v18 two-nucleon and Urbana IX three-nucleon interactions. The model for the nuclear current and charge operators retains one- and many-body contributions. Particular attention is made in the construction of the two-body current operators arising from the momentum-dependent part of the two-nucleon interaction. Three-body current operators are also included so that the full current operator is strictly conserved. The present model for the nuclear current operator is tested comparing theoretical predictions and experimental data of pd radiative capture cross section and spin observables.

Measurement of Rlt and Atl in the 4He(e,e'p)3H Reaction at pmiss of 130-300 MeV/c

We have measured the 4He(e,e'p)3H reaction at missing momenta of 130-300 MeV/c using the three-spectrometer facility at the Mainz microtron MAMI. Data were taken in perpendicular kinematics to allow us to determine the response function Rlt and the asymmetry term Atl. The data are compared to both relativistic and non-relativistic calculations.

Parity-Violating Interaction Effects in the np System

We investigate parity-violating observables in the np system, including the longitudinal asymmetry and neutron-spin rotation in np elastic scattering, the photon asymmetry in np radiative capture, and the asymmetries in deuteron photo-disintegration d(gamma,n)p in the threshold region and electro-disintegration d(e,e`)np in quasi-elastic kinematics. To have an estimate of the model dependence for the various predictions, a number of different, latest-generation strong-interaction potentials--Argonne v18, Bonn 2000, and Nijmegen I--are used in combination with a weak-interaction potential consisting of pi-, rho-, and omega-meson exchanges--the model known as DDH. The complete bound and scattering problems in the presence of parity-conserving, including electromagnetic, and parity-violating potentials is solved in both configuration and momentum space. The issue of electromagnetic current conservation is examined carefully. We find large cancellations between the asymmetries induced by the parity-violating interactions and those arising from the associated pion-exchange currents. In the np capture, the model dependence is nevertheless quite small, because of constraints arising through the Siegert evaluation of the relevant E1 matrix elements. In quasi-elastic electron scattering these processes are found to be insignificant compared to the asymmetry produced by gamma-Z interference on individual nucleons.

Modern theories of low-energy astrophysical reactions

We summarize recent ab initio studies of low-energy electroweak reactions of astrophysical interest, relevant for both big bang nucleosynthesis and solar neutrino production. The calculational methods include direct integration for np radiative and pp weak capture, correlated hyperspherical harmonics for reactions of A=3,4 nuclei, and variational Monte Carlo for A=6,7 nuclei. Realistic nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon interactions and consistent current operators are used as input.

Parity Violating Interactions and Currents in the Deuteron

We investigate parity-violating asymmetries in polarized n p radiative capture, and deuteron electro-disintegration in quasi-elastic kinematics, using the DDH model for the parity-violating nucleon-nucleon interaction. We find dramatic cancellations between the asymmetries induced by the parity-violating interaction and those arising from the associated parity-violating pion-exchange currents. In np capture, the model-dependence of the result is nevertheless quite small because of constraints arising through the Siegert evaluation of the relevant E1 matrix element. In quasi-elastic electron scattering these processes are found to be insignificant comared to the asymmetry produced by the gamma-Z interference on individual nucleons. These two experiments, then, provide clean probes of different aspects of weak-interaction physics associated with parity violation in the np system.

Three-Nucleon Electroweak Capture Reactions

Recent advances in the study of the p-d radiative and mu-3he weak capture processes are presented and discussed. The three-nucleon bound and scattering states are obtained using the correlated-hyperspherical-harmonics method, with realistic Hamiltonians consisting of the Argonne v14 or Argonne v18 two-nucleon and Tucson-Melbourne or Urbana IX three-nucleon interactions. The electromagnetic and weak transition operators include one- and two-body contributions. The theoretical accuracy achieved in these calculations allows for interesting comparisons with experimental data.
