Weak capture of protons by protons

The cross section for the proton weak capture reaction $^1H(p,e^+ν_e)^2H$ is calculated with wave functions obtained from a number of modern, realistic high-precision interactions. To minimize the uncertainty in the axial two-body current operator, its matrix element has been adjusted to reproduce the measured Gamow-Teller matrix element of tritium $β$ decay in model calculations using trinucleon wave functions from these interactions. A thorough analysis of the ambiguities that this procedure introduces in evaluating the two-body current contribution to the pp capture is given. Its inherent model dependence is in fact found to be very weak. The overlap integral $Λ^2(E=0)$ for the pp capture is predicted to be in the range 7.05--7.06, including the axial two-body current contribution, for all interactions considered.

Electromagnetic Structure of the Trinucleons

The electromagnetic form factors of the trinucleons 3H and 3He are calculated with wave functions obtained with the Argonne AV18 two-nucleon and Urbana IX three-nucleon interactions. Full account is taken of the two-body currents required by current conservation with the AV18 interaction as well as those associated with N-Delta transition currents and the currents of Delta resonance components in the wave functions. Explicit three-nucleon current operators associated with the two-pion exchange three-nucleon interaction arising from irreducible S-wave pion-nucleon scattering is constructed and shown to have very little effect on the calculated magnetic form factors. The calculated magnetic form factor of 3H, and charge form factors of both 3H and 3He are in satisfactory agreement with the experimental data. However, the position of the zero in the magnetic form factor of 3He is slightly underpredicted.

Femtometer Toroidal Structures in Nuclei

The two-nucleon density distributions in states with isospin $T=0$, spin $S$=1 and projection $M_S$=0 and $\pm$1 are studied in $^2$H, $^{3,4}$He, $^{6,7}$Li and $^{16}$O. The equidensity surfaces for $M_S$=0 distributions are found to be toroidal in shape, while those of $M_S$=$\pm$1 have dumbbell shapes at large density. The dumbbell shapes are generated by rotating tori. The toroidal shapes indicate that the tensor correlations have near maximal strength at $r<2$ fm in all these nuclei. They provide new insights and simple explanations of the structure and electromagnetic form factors of the deuteron, the quasi-deuteron model, and the $dp$, $dd$ and $αd$ $L$=2 ($D$-wave) components in $^3$He, $^4$He and $^6$Li. The toroidal distribution has a maximum-density diameter of $\sim$1 fm and a half-maximum density thickness of $\sim$0.9 fm. Many realistic models of nuclear forces predict these values, which are supported by the observed electromagnetic form factors of the deuteron, and also predicted by classical Skyrme effective Lagrangians, related to QCD in the limit of infinite colors. Due to the rather small size of this structure, it could have a revealing relation to certain aspects of QCD.

Variational Monte Carlo Calculations of $^3$H and $^4$He with a relativistic Hamiltonian - II

In relativistic Hamiltonians the two-nucleon interaction is expressed as a sum of $\tilde{v}_{ij}$, the interaction in the ${\bf P}_{ij}=0$ rest frame, and the ``boost interaction'' $δv({\bf P}_{ij})$ which depends upon the total momentum ${\bf P}_{ij}$ and vanishes in the rest frame. The $δv$ can be regarded as a sum of four terms: $δv_{RE}$, $δv_{LC}$, $δv_{TP}$ and $δv_{QM}$; the first three originate from the relativistic energy-momentum relation, Lorentz contraction and Thomas precession, while the last is purely quantum. The contributions of $δv_{RE}$ and $δv_{LC}$ have been previously calculated with the variational Monte Carlo method for $^3$H and $^4$He. In this brief note we report the results of similar calculations for the contributions of $δv_{TP}$ and $δv_{QM}$. These are found to be rather small.

An accurate nucleon-nucleon potential with charge-independence breaking

We present a new high-quality nucleon-nucleon potential with explicit charge dependence and charge asymmetry, which we designate Argonne $v_{18}$. The model has a charge-independent part with fourteen operator components that is an updated version of the Argonne $v_{14}$ potential. Three additional charge-dependent and one charge-asymmetric operators are added, along with a complete electromagnetic interaction. The potential has been fit directly to the Nijmegen $pp$ and $np$ scattering data base, low-energy $nn$ scattering parameters, and deuteron binding energy. With 40 adjustable parameters it gives a $χ^{2}$ per datum of 1.09 for 4301 $pp$ and $np$ data in the range 0--350 MeV.

Many-Body Currents and the Strange-Quark Content of 4he

Meson-exchange current (MEC) contributions to the parity-violating (PV) asymmetry for elastic scattering of polarized electrons from $^4$He are calculated over a range of momentum transfer using Monte Carlo methods and a variational $^4$He ground state wavefunction. The results indicate that MEC's generate a negligible contribution to the asymmetry at low-$|\qv|$, where a determination of the nucleon's mean square strangeness radius could be carried out at CEBAF. At larger values of momentum transfer -- beyond the first diffraction minimum -- two-body corrections from the $ρ$-$π$ \lq\lq strangeness charge" operator enter the asymmetry at a potentially observable level, even in the limit of vanishing strange-quark matrix elements of the nucleon. For purposes of constraining the nucleon's strangeness electric form factor, theoretical uncertainties associated with these MEC contributions do not appear to impose serious limitations.

The Coulomb Sum and Proton-Proton Correlations in Few-Body Nuclei

In simple models of the nuclear charge operator, measurements of the Coulomb sum and the charge form factor of a nucleus directly determine the proton-proton correlations. We examine experimental results obtained for few-body nuclei at Bates and Saclay using models of the charge operator that include both one- and two-body terms. Previous analyses using one-body terms only have failed to reproduce experimental results. However, we find that the same operators which have been used to successfully describe the charge form factors also produce substantial agreement with measurements of the Coulomb sum.
