Strangeness production in double gap events in ALICE

The ALICE detector at the LHC was upgraded in the long shutdown of 2019-2021 in order to take data at much-increased Run 3 and 4 rates. The various challenges of this upgrade are presented, and the first results of strangeness production in double gap events collected in 2022 are shown by presenting distributions of kaon pairs.

Multiple pion pair production in a Regge-based model

Central diffractive event topologies at the LHC energies can be identified by two different approaches. First, the forward scattered protons can be measured in Roman pots. Second, a veto on hadronic activity away from midrapidity can be imposed to define a double-gap topology. Such a double-gap topology trigger has been implemented by the ALICE collaboration in Run 1 and Run 2 of the LHC. The analysis of these events allows to determine the charged-particle multiplicity within the acceptance. The excellent particle identification capabilities of ALICE allows to study two-track events both in the pion and kaon sector. Events with measured charged particle multiplicity larger than two can arise from multiple pair production. A Regge-based approach for modeling such multiple pair production is presented.

Central exclusive meson production in proton-proton collisions in ALICE at the LHC

Central exclusive production at hadron colliders is characterised by the hadronic state produced at or close to midrapidity, and by the two forward scattered protons, or remnants thereof. No particles are produced between the midrapidity system and the forward going beam particles, and such events can hence be identified experimentally by a double-gap topology. At LHC energies, central exclusive production in proton-proton collisions is dominated by pomeron-pomeron fusion. The models to describe such reactions are reviewed, and the ongoing efforts in the ALICE Collaboration to analyse double-gap events taken in Run 2 at the LHC are presented.

Photon-photon scattering in the resonance region at midrapidity at the LHC

A study is presented to extend the measurements of photon-photon scattering in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC into the mass region of the pseudoscalar resonances $η$ and $η'$. The elementary photon-photon scattering cross section is presented. The cross section for photon-photon scattering in Pb-Pb is derived by convoluting the elementary photon-photon cross section with the Pb-Pb photon luminosity. The main background to two-photon final states, arising from double $π^{0}$ production with two of the four decay photons escaping detection, is examined, and possible kinematical conditions are discussed to optimize the signal-to-background ratio for such measurements at mid-rapidity.

Exclusive diffractive resonance production in proton-proton collisions at high energies

A model for exclusive diffractive resonance production in proton-proton collisions at high energies is presented. This model is able to predict double differential distributions with respect to the mass and the transverse momentum of the produced resonance in the mass region $\sqrt{M^2}\le$5 GeV. The model is based on convoluting the Pomeron distribution in the proton with the Pomeron-Pomeron-meson total cross section. The Pomeron-Pomeron-meson cross section is saturated by direct-channel contributions from the Pomeron as well as from two different $f$ trajectories, accompanied by the isolated f$_0(500)$ resonance dominating the $\sqrt{M^{2}} \leq $ GeV region. A slowly varying background is taken into account.

Overview of ALICE results in pp, pA and AA collisions

The ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is optimized for recording events in the very large particle multiplicity environment of heavy-ion collisions at LHC energies. The ALICE collaboration has taken data in Pb-Pb collisions in Run I and Run II at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}$ = 2.76 and \mbox{5.02 TeV}, respectively, and in pp collisions at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 0.9, 2.76, 5.02, 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The asymmetric system p-Pb was measured at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV. Selected physics results from the analysis of these data are presented, and an outline of the ALICE prospects for Run III is given.

Heavy ions at the Future Circular Collider

The Future Circular Collider (FCC) Study is aimed at assessing the physics potential and the technical feasibility of a new collider with centre-of-mass energies, in the hadron-hadron collision mode, seven times larger than the nominal LHC energies. Operating such machine with heavy ions is an option that is being considered in the accelerator design studies. It would provide, for example, Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 39 and 63 TeV, respectively, per nucleon-nucleon collision, with integrated luminosities above 30 nb^-1 per month for Pb-Pb. This is a report by the working group on heavy-ion physics of the FCC Study. First ideas on the physics opportunities with heavy ions at the FCC are presented, covering the physics of the Quark-Gluon Plasma, of gluon saturation, of photon-induced collisions, as well as connections with other fields of high-energy physics.

Resonance production in Pomeron-Pomeron collisions at the LHC

A model for Pomeron-Pomeron total cross section in the resonance region $\sqrt{M^{2}} \le$ 5 GeV is presented. This model is based on Regge poles from the Pomeron and two different $f$ trajectories, and includes the isolated f$_{0}(500)$ resonance in the region $\sqrt{M^{2}}\lesssim 1$ GeV. A slowly varying background is included. The presented Pomeron-Pomeron cross section is not directly measurable, but is an essential ingredient for calculating exclusive resonance production at the LHC.

Resonance production in Pomeron-Pomeron collisions at the LHC

A Regge pole model for Pomeron-Pomeron total cross section in the resonance region $\sqrt{M^2}\le$ 5 GeV is presented. The cross section is saturated by direct-channel contributions from the Pomeron as well as from two different $f$ trajectories, accompanied by the isolated f$_0(500)$ resonance which dominates the $\sqrt{M^{2}}\lesssim 1$ GeV region. A slowly varying background is taken into account. The calculated Pomeron-Pomeron total cross section cannot be measured directly, but is an essential part of central diffractive processes. In preparation of future calculations of central resonance production at the hadron level, and corresponding measurements at the LHC, we normalize the Pomeron-Pomeron cross section at large masses $σ_{t}^{PP} (\sqrt{M^2}\rightarrow \infty) \approx$ 1 mb as suggested by QCD-motivated estimates.

Heavy-flavour and quarkonium production in the LHC era: from proton-proton to heavy-ion collisions

This report reviews the study of open heavy-flavour and quarkonium production in high-energy hadronic collisions, as tools to investigate fundamental aspects of Quantum Chromodynamics, from the proton and nucleus structure at high energy to deconfinement and the properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma. Emphasis is given to the lessons learnt from LHC Run 1 results, which are reviewed in a global picture with the results from SPS and RHIC at lower energies, as well as to the questions to be addressed in the future. The report covers heavy flavour and quarkonium production in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions. This includes discussion of the effects of hot and cold strongly interacting matter, quarkonium photo-production in nucleus-nucleus collisions and perspectives on the study of heavy flavour and quarkonium with upgrades of existing experiments and new experiments. The report results from the activity of the SaporeGravis network of the I3 Hadron Physics programme of the European Union 7th Framework Programme.

Charge exchange reaction by Reggeon exchange and W$^{+}$W$^{-}$-fusion

Charge exchange reactions at high energies are examined. The existing cross section data on the Reggeon induced reaction pp $\rightarrow$ n + $Δ^{++}$ taken at the ZGS and ISR accelerators are extrapolated to the energies of the RHIC and LHC colliders. The interest in the charge exchange reaction induced by $W^{\pm}$-fusion is presented, and the corresponding QCD-background is examined.
